Commodore’s Comments
Greetings,
As I am looking ahead to 2014, I think of the long winter ahead of us and the expectation of what
is to come in the summer. I know there are those of you we fondly call “snowbirds” but for the rest
of us, it is a long time until the blue waters beckon our boats back to them. To help fill this void,
we are offering our first class in a long time, Lofting. This class, and hopefully more to come, will
enrich our membership, and create new friendships for everyone who attends. You will find information on this event in this issue of the Channel Marker. Look for it, and send in your registration
ASAP as this event is the 25th of January. We will not be attending the Cobo Hall MBIA’s Detroit
Boat Show this year. We will have a booth at the Cottage and Lakefront Living Show at the
Showcase Collection, in Novi. We have a dedicated group who work the booth, and would love to
have new faces join us there! Our participation in this show is strictly for the promotion of old boats,
and talking to people about their memories and boat stories. This show runs from Feb. 27 through
Mar. 2. Contact me at 810-794-5371 (leave a message), call my cell 586-665-2202 or email me at
[email protected]. I also text, and it is the fastest way to get a hold of me for any reason. I am
excited to be your new Commodore, so if you have any ideas for classes or events we could do for
our membership, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Leaving the Bridge
The time has come for me to pass the gavel. We now have a new leadership team and
Ann Guldemond is your incoming Commodore.
I’ve had a lot of fun leading this club and I would like to thank all of our members for their
support and input. You have tolerated my columns and listened to what I have had to say.
Whether you agreed or not, you were kind enough to voice your opinions. My aim was to
make you think about how to grow our club, be safe on the water, and most of all, have fun.
As I look back over the last four years I see many positive changes that have taken place.
We now have a self directed website, on-line event registration, a summer cruise director,
and a program that allows communication via email to all members when it is necessary to
change something that is on the printed schedule. We still have our fine club publication,
“The Channel Marker”, and it is also available on-line.
As we move into the upcoming year, Sue and I hope that you will support
the next team as well as you did us and we will finally have the time to
complete one of our boat projects.
Thank you again for your support.

Bilges And Burgees
“The Editor’s Corner”
On the cradle in Dad’s backyard, sitting in the Cockpit of my 39’ Scorpion…
I was cleaning up the boat and starting the winter preparations. With the
arrival of my little nephew a few months prior, I began to anticipate the day
he would hear and understand when over 1200 horsepower rumbled to life,
better put, when Uncle Todd “lit ‘em up”. I wondered if he would have the
same reaction I feel? Would he have the same passion for the boat as my
father did? I thought about that boat and how Dad bought it new, and I
bought it off him in 2005. I wondered if the little guy would learn how to trim
her out and make her dance over the chop while cruising at 50 knots. Would he
also like changing the valve springs or pulling the heads as part of maintaining high performance
engines? Boating transcends generations and classic boats, especially boats that are handed
down from generation to generation help to promote what can only be described as the most
rewarding tradition I can think of. In this issue, take note of the article where we feature our
Treasurer, Roy Schoenherr and his family for he has a great story about the family boat.
In my search for the ultimate derelict boat, well I think I found it. I keep 42 Reasons! in the
heated storage building at Mount Clemens Marine Center, on the Clinton River in Mount Clemens.
I have a good relationship with the owners and they allow me time to work 42 Reasons!. After 42
Reasons! made it up on the hard, I went back to the marina to check on her. I found that the boys
had pulled Gar Wood’s Cigarette out of one building and she was headed to their Wood Shop
building to begin undergoing her restoration. She is a 70’ pleasure boat that could achieve 50
miles per hour. More to come on the history of this unique vessel and the journey she is to
undertake.
With winter upon us, we can look forward to some more great events including the Lofting
workshop in January, the Boys and their Toys spring event and more. I know I say this a great
deal, but I hope you will give some thought to either attending an extra event or volunteering at
one of the shows next season. I look forward to our time together and remember to enjoy your
club.

Long Gone but not Forgotten
2013 Port Huron
Blue Water
Antique & Classic
Boat Show Wrap Up
By Larry J. Krabach - BWACBS Chair
C hristmas and New Years have come and gone. I hope all is well with you and your family and you
got all the newest toys for your boat. The snow is flying, and we are halfway through the non-boating
season. Soon it will be warm and we will all be back on the water. Gone but not forgotten is the 2013
Port Huron Blue Water Antique & Classic Boat Show. The show was on September 6th & 7th and as
the show started, the weather could not have been better. Some rain on the 7th didn’t deter die hard
antique and classic boat lovers.
The weekend started off with a rendezvous at the mouth of
Black River for a 12 mile trip to St. Clair for dinner. The trip
down river was adventurous as the boats raced side by side
with the beauty of a time gone by. In all, there were 12 boats
that ended up docked in St Clair for dinner at the Voyager
Restaurant. Over forty of our members joined us for dinner
and a very entertaining video. The video followed a family of
5 in the 1950’s as they traveled on Lake Michigan and to
Mackinaw Island in a 20ft Cruiser with a 25hp outboard motor.
After an enjoyable evening, the ride home was relaxing and
beautiful as the sun set in the west.
The next day, Saturday, things got even better. A large number
of boats registered and were displayed on land and in the water.
There was also a great display of outboard motors. We even had
a floating picnic table that wasn’t an antique, but surely a must
see “classic” that added a little humor to the event as we saw a
great number of viewers in the morning.

We also welcomed, as our special guest, Peter Stephens, the new Antique and Classic Boat
Society’s Executive Director. “My goal is to reach out to learn as much as possible about the organization and focus on those areas where I can best help chapters and members get the most benefit out
of ACBS”, commented Stephens. I hope all of you had a chance to meet and talk to Peter. We were
pleased to have him visit.
A little rain around noon was just in time for us to visit the “Dive House” to tour Wayne and Donna
Brusate’s home. Among the many maritime rooms were the Chris-Craft guest room and the basement,
a special treatment of 17,000+ feet of reclaimed barn wood to give the feel of a dive shop. From boats
hanging from the rafters to diving equipment, this home is a diver’s dream. It was a highlight of the day.
The 2013 Port Huron Blue Water Antique & Classic Boat Show is over, but not forgotten. See you next
year the weekend after Labor Day, September 5th & 6th.

Summer Cruise Series
We want to thank the Fleet Captain,
Gerry Kowal for planning this past season’s summer cruise series. These
mid-week, informal cruises were
enjoyed by all who participated. With
increasing participation, it was evident
that these events could generate some
real interest within the membership.
These cruises will continue next year,
they can be a lot of fun, be sure to sign
up.
Gerry is currently enlisting
Rendezvous Captains and ideas for
interesting runs. The formula is simple: 1) A place to gather. 2) A place to launch. 3)
Beautiful or interesting scenery along a run. 4) A fun place to stop and have a bite to eat
and a cold beverage after the run. All ideas are welcome, please contact Gerry Kowal at
248-651-5765 or e-mail at [email protected]. We look forward to meeting up with
you on the lake.

Across the Generations…
It never ceases to amaze me, how being on the water,
around boats, with family and friends affects people.
Boating and classic boats tend to bring out a sense of
community and friendship that spans generations…
sometimes defining us.
Recently you may have seen an ad for the National
Antique and Classic Boat Society asking, “When Did It
Start For You?” It is a great ad highlighting youth and their love for Antique and Classic Boating.
Pictured driving the boat is the Grandson of our very own Roy Schoenherr;
Matthew Donald Hall. Matthew is at the helm of Roy &
Judi’s 1961 18’ Chris Craft Sea Skiff, ROY
– AL – IV, piloting on the St.
Clair Flats.
What is unique about this
photo, is that Matthew is the
fourth generation in the
Schoenherr family to command
this boat. Roy’s father bought the
Skiff in the spring of 1962 from
our friend Pete at the original
Colony Chris Craft. Roy spent his
youth on this boat and later, Roy
and Judi had their second date out
on that boat. A few years later, Roy’s
daughter learned to operate the boat
as a child and still to this day, enjoys
taking dad’s boat out. Now Roy and
Judi can be proud as their Grandson
Matthew assumes the helm. In talking
with Roy and Judi, they conveyed that
their wish is with proper care and maintenance, there will be a fifth generation
piloting Roy – Al – IV someday.
Roy is currently our Club Treasurer
and Judi assists managing the Club’s
Ships Store. When you see Roy or Judi at
one of the many events they attend, feel
free to ask them more about their Skiff or
their beautiful family.

Honorary Board Members
for Life
This past November the outgoing Board of Directors unanimously voted to bestow
the title of “Honorary Board Member for Life” upon two very deserving members of the
Michigan Chapter.
Don Brenner and Joe Kassmann have over fifty five years of combined service to
the club. Both have served numerous terms on the board, as both voting members
and appointed at-large members. They each attend and volunteer at most club
events throughout the years, and have given of their time whenever asked.
Joe has also served as club historian and photographer, compiling many albums
filled with pictures of past events that he brings to functions for all to view.
Don has worked behind the scenes at many of the Algonac Boat Shows to bring
in the car clubs for an added attraction and for the last several years as the
Commercial Advertising manager of the Channel Marker.
It is members like Don and Joe that make the Michigan Chapter special. I thank
you both for the special privilege of serving with you.

several projects in various states of restoration. There were a number of people with parts
for sale or trade, while Commodore Garmhaus and Lady Sue provided us with Coffee and
Donuts. It was a fun time with friends old and new. As the morning drew to a close, we
took time out for lunch, then met up in Chesterfield, Michigan at the Stahl Auto Museum.
Club members were treated to a private afternoon showing of the museum. Over 100 vehicles were on display, along with ornate music machines, marine and children’s displays. A
special thanks to Wayne Eversole, John & Melinda Adams and the volunteers at Stahl’s
Auto Museum for making this a fall event to remember.

Thank You...
To all of the 2013 show sponsors and volunteers
that helped to make the 2013 boat show season
a wonderful time for everyone in our club.
Now in our slow season, we are looking
for volunteers for the 2014 season…
The Michigan Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society needs your
help. We are a volunteer based organization and in order to keep these
fun events scheduled and “fun for all”, we are looking for volunteers.
We need your help planning events, volunteering at shows with judging,
or working a station for a couple of hours during a show.
If you have an interest and you can spare a little time, for a lot of fun,
please let the Show Chairman or a member of the Board of Directors
know of your interest. It is a great way to spend time and make new
friends. While you are getting ready for the 2014 season,
pencil in some time and lets meet up in the spring.

Ronald (Ron) William Ballantyne
Ron passed away on September 20th,
2013 at the age of 82. His wife Barbara; two
daughters, Carolyn and Deborah; and two
grandsons survive him. A son, Philip, predeceases him.
Ron was a member of the Antique and
Classic Boat Society, International since the
early 1980's. He was President of the Michigan Chapter from 1986
to1988. In 1988 he was elected to the Board of Directors of ACBS
International and served as President in 1990-1991.
Ron attended many ACBS functions around Michigan, Clayton
NY, and the Muskoka area in Canada showing his antique boats.
These are a few of his many boats:
• 1918 Hacker Runabout, 21 foot, named "Pal" (this was the first
boat registered in MI as a Historical Watercraft).
• 1928 Hacker Design class-151 Racer, 17 foot, named
"Houston Girl".
• 1937 Chris Craft Utility, 16 foot, named "Buddy".
• 1939 Garwood Runabout, 16 foot, named "Nifty".
Ron had an infectious smile and made friends with everyone he
met.
He will be dearly missed by many especially his old Boating
Buddies.
