VICTORIA BEACH SPORTS CLUB
Victoria Beach has a reputation for being a flurry of summer activity. The population grows to astounding numbers as families flock to their cottages and
enjoy the beaches, parks and faculties. But the community has also had many
years of winter fun and activities.
Skating was always a favorite sport of the local children. Every spring, an
annual event took place
where many people
would come out from
Winnipeg on the train
for a day of winter activities. It was referred to
by the locals as the
“Snowshoe Train”. The
day would include sliding, skating on the lake,
and much more.
In 1946 the Victoria
Beach Sports Club was
formed with Bert Trainor
as President. The municipality gave the club a
group of lots beside the Legion Hall. There they built a skating rink to accommodate hockey standards, and a skating shack. For years to come, when the
“Snowshoe Train” would come, the local men would play an annual hockey game
against a team from Winnipeg.
In the 1950’s, Alec Anderson decided that it would be a good idea to build a
curling rink. Although he had never seen one before, he had heard that curling
was a sport that anyone could play and would be perfect for the community. He
went to Reg Moir, who worked at the lumber yard, and got a plan showing all
of the standard measurement for a curling rink. Soon the vision was realized and
the Victoria Beach curling rink was built beside the skating rink. There was a
reception area and canteen where people could gather and watch the curling.
The Sports Club became the center of winter fun and recreation.
The Victoria Beach Legion Hall, which is now a part of the Sports Club, was
built in 1936 alongside Pine Road. It served as host to many weddings, church
services, Sunday school classes, funerals, dances, basket socials, and Christmas
concerts. After the war, a group of men raised money to insulate and put an
addition on the Hall. Mrs. Ives donated a small building that was used as a
kitchen, but the extra space served as much more. It was a place for Christmas
pageant participants to change costumes and newlyweds to sign nuptials.
In the early 1970’s the Sports Club received a government grant that enabled
them to make fantastic changes. With careful planning and the help of many
volunteers, they made another addition to the building adding a full

kitchen/canteen, lobby area, restrooms, and a second floor viewing area for
curling. Using large logs as rollers they moved the Legion Hall to adjoin the
Sports Club.
To this day, the building is always buzzing with activity. In the winter months
there are nightly curling games, weekend bonspiels, skating, and children’s
activities. In the summer, weekly Bingo, flea markets and art shows. It is also
been the center of many celebrations and receptions.
Unfortunately, the building is now in need of extensive work and repairs. Age
and flood waters have taken their toll. It is time to focus on a new structure
where we will create many more precious memories for years to come.
The site is secured and plans are underway for the new Victoria Beach
Recreational Center. Now, quest is upon raise enough money to get started on
our new venture. On Saturday, May 21st there will be a fundraiser social event
held at the Victoria Beach Sports Club on Pine Road. Join us for an evening of
dancing, and socializing. There will also be a silent auction, door prizes, midnight lunch and more. For tickets, call Onale at 756-3344.
Donations to the building fund are always welcomed and, of course, very appreciated. If you would like to make a contribution, please send it to the Victoria

MEAT DRAW - The Birchwood Motor Hotel is very gracious in allowing us
the proceeds from the meat draw on the First Thursday of the month. Come
out and enjoy a delicious rib dinner and support our club. Call Norma

ANNUAL FISH FRYS - The V.B. Sports Club & the Volunteer Fire Dept. wil
host their very popular dinners again. The first will be on June 25th at the
Sports Field on Hwy 59 beside the Fire Hall. Fry time starts at 4 pm. NOTE
- If there is any hint of inclement weather, we wil have it at the Sports Club.
The second is Oct. 8th. As it is Thanksgiving weekend and this is a very
popular, we encourage you to get your tickets early! We will have two sittings, 4 - 6 pm and 7 - 9 pm. Tickets at the usual vendors, signs to be posted.
YARD SALES (Merry Makers) - We apologize that we were unable to hold
last year’s July sale as we did not have enough goodies to make it viable.
We are definetly going to try again on July 16th at the Hillside Resort Store.
Signs will be posted.
FLEA MARKET (Merry Makers) - Rain or shine, we will host a Flea Market
at the Sports Club on Pine Road on August 20th starting at 9 am. Any donations for either the yard sale or flea market are appreciated and can be left
at the Sports Club, under the eave to the skating rink.

ANNUAL RUMMAGE - Oct. 22, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm, VB Sports Club.
Absolutely best deals in town!! There will be our annual Quilt draw, flea market, tons of clothing, food hamper draw and canteen will be open.
HALLOWEEN DANCE - October 29, 8 pm - 1 am. Fun for all ages. Helpful
hint: go to the rummage sale the week before and get those created juices
going!

All events unless specified are located at the Sports Club on Pine Rd in
Victoria Beach. When the vehicle restrictions are on from June 24th to Sept.
6th, please access the club via David Rd. to Ateah Rd. to Pine Rd. or from
Hwy 59, down Ateah Rd. to Pine Rd. Under special permission, we are
allowed vehicle traffic to the club only when an event is on. Please respect

VICTORIA BEACH SNOWDRIFTERS
SNOWMOBILE CLUB
Just call us the “happy gang”! All that great snow this past winter, along with
our well groomed trail system, the snowmobilers were having a great time. Our
riding season started mid December and we rode until the end of March, so it
was really worthwhile joining the Club and buying that Snopass! We want to
give a big Thank you to our Snopass vendors, you did a great job and without
you we would not have the funds to keep the trails in such great condition.
When buying your Snopass make sure the name of our Club is on the pass so
that we are the club that receives the money. As well, we hope the snowmobilers who ride our trail system will support the club by buying their annual memberships. The work is all done by volunteers, but we do need funds
to keep that big yellow machine fueled and repaired if we
want the benefit of smooth riding and marked trails. Our
club and trails are only as good as its volunteers. To
all who worked hard to make our year a success
… Thank you. To all of the snowmobilers who
feel they could lend a helping hand on
occasion, we welcome you.
Our Club includes the following
areas: Hecla Island to Victoria Beach,
Traverse Bay area, Hillside, Belair and
we groom as far as Stead. The club meets regularly from September to April,
with the meeting being held the first Saturday (after the 1st Wednesday) of
each month, at 7 pm at the Birchwood Hotel. Come join us – have a voice –
meet new friends to ride with.

phase one. The result
is an extremely well
protected port for a
limited number of
recreational boaters.
The harbour is
managed by the
Victoria Beach Harbour
Authority. At present
there are 28 seasonal
slip and 2 day slips.
The rate for a full season slip is $350. The
rate for May to the end of August is $300 and the rate for July and August is
$250. Shorter term rates are also available. Inquiries can be made to Rod
Bollman (harbour master).

The Eastern Beaches Green Thumbs
have until July 4, 2005 to beautify and
enter their garden to the 3rd annual
Beauty and the Beaches Garden
Contest. All experience levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced gardeners, so this year don’t just think
about entering the contest … Enter it!!
Contest Rules:
1. The Garden Contest shall take
place the summer of 2005 and
judging will be the week of
July 11 - 15, 2005.
2. The contest is open to all property owners of the Eastern Beaches area.
3. The garden must be designed by the owner.
4. Judges will be awarding prizes on the basis of:
• Overall neatness and design
• Alternative gardening ie: water ponds etc., recyclable materials, containers
• Effective use of colour and foliage
• Beginner and youth gardeners
• Best flower and/or vegetable gardens
5. Entry forms will be available from Contest sponsors and the July Beaches
News flyer.
6. Any photos taken of the winning properties remain the property of Cottager
Publications and shall be used as necessary for promotional purposes.

While our criteria is based upon content, we also have to consider the quality
of the print submitted. This is becoming a bit of a concern with digital photography and at home printers. Low resolution of a photo and poor print quality

WALTER WHYTE SCHOOL – SOARING WITH EAGLES
Have you ever wondered where the families who live at the Lake all year-round
have their kids attend school? From
Patricia Beach in the South to Victoria
Beach in the North the kids attend
Walter Whyte School.
Walter Whyte School is a Kindergarten
to Senior One (Grade 9) school that is
part of the Lord Selkirk School Division.
The school offers a full range of options
for the students who attend that include
• Full-time Kindergarten,
• Industrial Arts and Home Economics
(Once a school cycle in Selkirk), Band
(from grade 5 to S1),
• an ever expanding and innovative art
program.
Lunch hour activities include
• Fiddling (run by the Parent Advisory
Council with sponsorship from the
Manitoba Metis Federation),
• a student newspaper,
• drama club,
• yearbook club,
• a variety of athletic intramural
activities.
Recently after school activities have
begun which include Gymnastics, Kung
fu, and Hip Hop Dance. These take
place after school and have been organ-
ized to save people the drive to the Pine
Falls/Powerview area for these activities. Response has been good with over
50 students signing up in March /April
for the Spring Session.
Along with the school activities,
Walter Whyte School is also the home to
Beaches Nursery (a Co-op run preschool), the Beaches Branch of Library
Allard, and a variety evening activities.
The P.A.C. is also starting to offer square
dancing on weekends (with support
form the Manitoba Metis Federation).
With a school population that has
been as high as 155 and is currently in
the 130 – 40 range the classes at
Walter Whyte are a comfortable size
(2004-2005 average class size is 15).

The Southeast Regional Metis Corporation office in Grand Marais is proud to present the opening of “Madeleine’s Trading Post Inc.” this summer. The Southeast
Regional Metis Corporation has developed an outlet that will show case and promote Aboriginal artists and crafters within the Southeast Region. This outlet will
serve as a vehicle to promote local talent and to increase awareness of Metis culture and heritage.
Metis culture and heritage is an integral part of Manitoba’s diverse ethnic mosaic. For the Metis in the Southeast Region of the province, there is an urgent need
to promote Metis values, art, crafts, music, languages and other aspects of Metis
culture and heritage. The Metis arts and crafts shop in our facility will be a gathering place for activities that promote all aspects of Metis, Aboriginal and Inuit
culture. This will be a great opportunity for artists and crafters through out the
region to network and showcase their work. Not only will this create and promote
cultural awareness for the aboriginal artists and crafters the store/gallery will feature but will also help these artists and artisans to gain exposure.

GRAND MARAIS FAMILY FESTIVAL WINTER CARNIVAL
2005

The fourth Annual Grand Marais Family Festival that took place at the Grand
Marais Recreation Hall on the weekend of February 11th, was carried out without a
hitch. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, warm temperatures and a breeze as
soft as a spring kiss.
The three-day Carnival was very well attended by thousands of people from near
and far. Dignitaries from federal, provincial and municipal levels of government
opened the event. Friday evening a youthful fiddling group from Walter Whyte
School and the Tommy Knott Band entertained those in attendance and a special
Valentine Teen Dance took place at Walter Whyte School.
Indoor events on Saturday kept children busy with face painting, young magicians, balloon sculpting, a bean bag toss and the ever popular Adopt a Bear.
Outdoor events were the skating rink, ever popular toboggan slide, the horse drawn
sleigh ride and a cross-country Ski Derby for teens.
Adult activities included a very popular Cribbage Tournament and a Darts
Tournament. Silent auction, lottery tree and raffle tickets were available throughout
the weekend. Lots of good food and beverages were available during the entire weekend and the more than 200 people were fed during the Sunday Pancake Breakfast.
Organizers planned for two new events, a very successful Novelty Curling Bonspiel
and a Sunday morning Multi-denominational Church Service with clergy and parishioners from Roman Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran parishes in the Beaches areas.
The Belles of Praise, a Handbell choir from Greenwald/Trinity Lutheran church
played, and a combined Anglican and Lutheran Voice choir sang during the service.
Approximately160 people attended the service from all areas of the east beaches. The loose offering of $490 was donated to the Mennonite Central Committee
for distribution to Asian Tsunami Relief.
Organizers of this annual event are thankful for the efforts of many volunteers as
well as the attendance of faithful residents and are hopeful that everyone will
attend the Fifth Annual Family Festival scheduled for February 10th, 11th, and 12th,
2006.

The Grand Beach and Area Development Corporation is busy planning a Canada
Day Festival for July 1st, 2005, to be held adjacent to
Thunder Mountain Water Park on the way to East Grand
Beach. Activities starting at 11:00 am include live music,
an ultralight air show, children's activities, beer gardens,
beachwear competition, arm wrestling contest, artists
and merchants concessions and displays, raffles and
evening fireworks for a grand finale. Anyone wishing to

about the need to have a burning permit when burning grass or debris. The
Wildfires Act requires that burning permits be obtained from April 1 to
November 15. These permits are available at no charge from your local fire
department or at any Manitoba Conservation District Office. We are encouraging
you to burn in a safe manner to ensure a fire will not escape onto surrounding
private or crown land.
Manitoba Conservation reserves the right to cancel burning permits during
periods of extreme fire hazard.

BEARS
With our high number of bear encounters over the last few years, Manitoba
Conservation would like to remind residents and cottage owners of the potential problems associated with bears.
Making your cottage or rural home
‘bear safe’ is often as simple as removing the food sources that attract bears.
• Don’t leave food, garbage or pet food
outside
• Store garbage inside or outside in
bear proof containers.
• Garbage should be hauled away at
least twice a week to prevent odours.
• If you have garbage pick up, put out
your garbage the day of delivery.
• The bones and waste parts of fish and
meat give off strong odours, store them
in the freezer until garbage day.
• Keep barbecues clean and free of
grease. Store inside if possible.
• Don’t put fish or meat in your compost. Use lime to reduce odours.
• Pick fruit daily from trees. Ripening
fruit is a powerful bear attractant.
• Avoid bird feeders. Take feeders down
in the summer.
It is the actions of the cottage that
determine the outcome of the
bear/human encounter. If a problem
bear becomes a dangerous bear, the
bear may have to be destroyed. People
can reduce the need for destruction of
bears by handling food and garbage
responsibly.
Trapping or destroying bears is not
the solution to bear problems. The community as a whole must work together
by making their yards ‘bear safe.’

Our first annual "information exchange and open house" at the community club
on Sunday July 3rd at 11 am to noon, to allow the cottage owners the chance
to meet the new executive and have a chance just to chat about plans for the
club for the summer of 2005.
Our first annual pitch in and clean up the club grounds is Tuesday July 5th at
10 am all welcome to help out bring gloves and rakes etc.
Our Annual General Meeting will be Sunday Sept 4, 2005 at 11 am the community club
St. Clements is now on 911.
People need to be reminded that the 911 connection is to their phone in the
cottage and not to any cell phones. If emergency calls are made from a cell
phone, we need to advise the operator of that. Also the Civic Address By-law is
in effect and we are all required to have our address visible from the street!
Grand Marais has a new holding tank By-law and if cottage owners have not
already met the requirements, they should get the information from the RM
office.
South Beach Casino is slated to open May 31st, 2005.
Manitoba’s second First Nation gaming facility is scheduled to open May 31st,
2005. South Beach Casino is located in the host community of Brokenhead
Ojibway First Nation, just north of Winnipeg.
Manitoba’s newest gaming facility will provide economic development for the
consortium of First Nations for the benefit of future generations. South Beach
Casino is a world class casino offering table games, slots, a cosmopolitan
restaurant along with a lounge that will showcase Manitoba musicians and performers.
The South Beach Casino is owned and operated by seven of nine First Nations
of the Southeast Tribal Council – Bloodvein, Brokenhead Ojibway, Hollow Water,
Black River, Little Grand Rapids, Pauingassi and Poplar River – Under the
umbrella Corporation of the Southeast Resource Development Council.
