NVIWF VISITS NORTHERN NEVADA A huge thank you to Valerie
July, 2010 To NVIWF Members: Following is our "Occasional Newsletter". Hope you enjoy. Joanne Blystone, more or less the editor! NVIWF VISITS NORTHERN NEVADA A huge thank you to Valerie Glenn, the Glenn Group, for organizing our outing to No. Nevada. We could not have had more fun as well learning more about the Reno community. We began our day at Valerie's office for a wonderful lunch and a tour of her soon to be Leed certified green office. Valerie shared a little about how she and her husband, John Glenn of DRGM, merged their companies to form the Glenn Group. She also gave us a taste of some of their work. Here's her website and you can also "friend" them on Facebook: www.theglenngroup.com Valerie in black, Sallie Haws to the right and Becky Takeda-Tinker’s ponytail. We went next to the Knowledge Center named that as it truly is way more than a library, with access to every type of media device, dozens of computer study stations, great lecture halls all in a beautiful setting. All of this was shown to us by an amazing young UNR graduate named Priscilla. We walked on to the Davidson Academy, a free public day school for the profoundly academically talented located on the UNR campus. I could not begin to tell you all they do there. I think it affected each of us greatly. Please see their website at www.davidsonacademy.unr.edu . Here we are pictured at the Marguerite W. Peterson Athletic Academic Center with a thunderstorm brewing behind us! We were joined there by member Linda Faiss and her friend Cookie Bible. Linda has a home at Marla Bay about a half hour away. Also joining us was member Margo Piscevich as well as Chris Cox’s husband Washoe County Commissioner John Breternitz. The wonderful meal included apricot and goat cheese hors dourves, poached wild salmon and a fresh fruit tart all served as we enjoyed a lakeside view of the beautiful Lake Tahoe in the cool evening air. A warm thank you to Miriam for again sharing her beautiful home with us. I am very sad to say that no photos were taken. Saturday saw our group divide up for two different itineraries. Karen, Lena, Gayle and Shelia were off to see some Nevada history with a trip to Virginia City. Karen said they ended their very warm day in a “saloon watching guys and girls dancing with real guns on their hips!” . She said they were looking forward to coming back to stay one of the beautiful B&B’s. May I suggest the Cobb Mansion (www.cobbmansion.com). It is known as the most beautiful and is the former home of my college roommate who happens to also own the Silver Queen. “Women’s Day at the PGA”, Co-Chaired by Valerie, was held at the Montreux Golf and Country Club and was attended by Sallie, Carlene, Chris, Linda Harris, Joanne and Robin Townsend whose husband Randy was Chair of the PGA event. The day began with a small expo featuring lots of products and offers from many of the stores in the Summit, Reno’s newest mall. We then took our seats in the bleachers around the Patty Sheehan Practice Hole to see Patty Sheehan and Annika Sorenstam offer a golf clinic. Both had wireless lavaliers and were very entertaining as they gave each other a bad time about their golf shots. We spent about an hour and a half at the clinic before we proceeded on to a beautiful lunch in a tent outside the Country Club. Annika Sorenstam demonstrating at the golf clinic. Some stats on Annika: 72 LPGA wins, first LPGA player to cross the $20 million mark, lowest score for a round in tournament play: 59. Patty Sheehan joined the LPGA tour in 1980 as one of the first pro lady golfers. She mentioned it was before the sponsorships and the entourages such as trainers, nutritionists, etc. that now travel with some golfers. Her stats include 35 LPGA wins and is in the LPGA Hall of Fame. She finished in the top 10 for LPGA money wins from 1982-1993. Sallie and Carleen at the festive luncheon. Valerie announcing! Keynote speaker Lt. Col. Julie Hudson, USAF Reserves First female combat mission ready A-10 fighter pilot in the Air National Guard. Valerie thanking Reno resident Patty Sheehan for all her help with this event. Valerie and Patty were golf team mates at UNR but Valerie says Patty took her game just a little farther! The event raised $10,000 to give to the Annika Sorenstam Foundation. OUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2010 AT THE LAS VEGAS COUNTRY CLUB TO HEAR CONGRESSWOMAN AND NVIWF MEMBER SHELLEY BERKLEY Please send news, photos, calendar events in copy ready form to [email protected].
