Shortly after the school bells ring Chuck’s campout will begin and we ask that you all cross your fingers for sunshine and good weather. However, whatever the weather, roof-top circumstances or personal ailments, Chuck plans to hit the roof on September 13, 2015 again for his 11th year as the consummate spokesperson for St. Clair County kids, their safety and well-being. The event sponsors, our Council, WSAQ Radio and Birchwood Mall are currently planning Roof-Sit 21 and hope you will join in the fun once again. This unique event is a wonderful example of community caring and we are proud to play a part!! The services Roof-Sit helps to provide include prevention education programming throughout St. Clair County schools and forensic interviewing services for nearly 150 alleged child sexual abuse victims each year. Chuck will be lifted Roof-Top to begin his campout aboard a Fort Gratiot Fire Department ladder truck on Sunday, September 13, 2015. Chuck will of course be cheered on loudly by the large crowd of supporters he has led from Lakeside Park to the Birchwood Mall. As soon as Chuck’s feet hit the pebbly roof – he will begin his advocacy for kids as he encourages all WSAQ listeners, all day every day to pledge, donate and simply support every kid’s right to be safe. We invite your participation in Roof-Sit 21 in support of the belief that… “It shouldn’t hurt to be a child.” For ”Better or Worse” Chuck Santoni’s week long roof-top living sometimes takes unpredictable twists and turns and in 2014, Chuck’s left leg took an unpredictable twist in the weeks before Roof-Sit resulting in a boot and crutches!! Oh well – this complication did not phase the indestructible Chuck, and up he went roof-top – crutches and all!! Those of you who have visited the roof-top camp site know all about the cramped quarters and portable shower which would test the agility of the most mobile – but imagine negotiating all of this on crutches! Kudos to Chuck pictured here ready to go in 2014 with his ever ready smile despite anticipating a particularly challenging week ahead!! We’re looking forward to a crutch-free 2015! OUR STORY The St. Clair County Child Abuse/ Neglect Council began in 1984 when a group of local professionals working daily with abused children felt compelled to formalize an effort directed at child abuse PREVENTION and created our Council which has come oh so far in the years since!! From those first days until the present, the main ingredients for success have remained constant – committed people who believe in the cause – and willingly give generously of their time, talents, money and good will to help protect St. Clair County kids. Foremost among those committed individuals are Roof-Sitters, that unique brand of individual who seems to enjoy roof-top living for a cause – and luckily – St. Clair County has one!! Chuck Santoni, our very own St. Clair County Roof-Sitter, has helped this event grow and prosper in spite of tough economic times, abysmal weather, national tragedies and the like. The funds from this event have paved the way for our many services which are provided at no cost and are unduplicated in St. Clair County. Our kids need you – speak up – advocate – educate – donate and by all means listen to WSAQ Radio September 13-18, 2015 for entertainment, good information and fun! Roof-Sit 2015 is a great opportunity to support the steady stream of children who visit our facility and the thousands who benefit from prevention programming. We thank you in advance for your generosity, whether you choose to become an Angel Investor, support the 5 X 5 or Team 107.1 events, make a large donation or a small one – we appreciate your caring….. “For Kids’ Sake” Those interested in volunteering to help with or donate to Roof-Sit 2015 can reply by mail or call (810) 966-9911. MANY THANKS The hundreds of volunteers who help make Roof-Sit happen include Sandy O’Neill and daughter, Madison who for many years have manned a terrific bake sale the Saturday prior to Roof-Sit on behalf of Woman’s Life Chapter #836. Sandy, who was once employed by the Council as a prevention educator, has remained a loyal supporter of child abuse prevention and is seen here with daughter Madison. Many thanks to Sandy who was recognized by Council as Child Advocate of the Year in 2015 (along with Brooke Sniesak) for her outstanding support of our belief that… “It shouldn’t hurt to be a child.” THE PROBLEM Much is being done to PREVENT child abuse and neglect, yet we must do more. As long as a single child is abused or neglected, this struggle cannot end. No study can gauge the human toll that abuse and neglect inflicts on our children. Most physical injuries heal with time, but the emotional injuries can last a lifetime, leaving survivors to ask time and again: “Why was I hurt so badly by those who were supposed to love and protect me?” There is no good answer. The St. Clair County Child Abuse/Neglect Council, and others like it all across Michigan, are working for the day when no child has to ask that question. Every step we take toward eliminating child abuse will improve the quality of life for children, families, and communities, and will provide a better future for all of us. WALK FOR KIDS’ SAKE LOOKING FOR ANGELS! Once again, Council offers three levels of Angel Investor commitments to Roof-Sit - $1,000 - $3,000 - $5,000 – an excellent way for area businesses and service clubs to become involved and promote their services over the airwaves. Each level offers great promotional benefits, including T-shirt advertisements, on-air promos, mall signage and lunch on the roof with Chuck for $5,000 donors. This is a popular and fun project for area businesses and service clubs – just ask the Loyal Order of the Moose and the local Fraternal Order of Eagles – they are loyal Angel Investors and have loved eating lunch roof-top!!! For additional details, contact us at 810.966.9911. FIVE BY FIVE EVENT September 15, 2015 The friendly rivalry has begun and our fab four are busy whipping up enthusiasm for the 5 X 5 event which will take place Tuesday, September 15, 2015. 2014 saw the Donnellon-Wendling team celebrate victory over the Johnson-McCartan team – a close race indeed!! We hope you’ll listen in as Deb Johnson, Community Mental Health’s Executive Director and Mike McCartan, Community Mental Health’s former Director face off against Sheriff Tim Donnellon and Prosecutor Mike Wendling in the all-day event as they aim to raise funds for child abuse prevention and child advocacy. Originally, the group hoped to raise $5,000 (each team) by 5:00 p.m. so they would be on time for dinner with their family. However, 5 X 5 is now a misnomer – as the combined pledges 2014 totaled over $40,000!! Although the rivalry is intense, this group is hilarious and their humorous banter makes for good listening all day long! In the end, Deb, Tim, and the two Mikes all agree, in spite of the significant dollar amount raised, it’s the cause that really counts and rain or shine they’ll give their all in support of their shared belief that… “It Shouldn’t Hurt To Be A Child.” Get your exercise – have some fun – advocate for a good cause and walk with us in the Walk For Kids’ Sake, Sunday, September 13, 2015. Chuck is anxious to lead the walk from Lakeside Park to Birchwood Mall – and hopes the crowd will be bigger than ever this year! BLOW THE ROOF OFF “Blow the Roof Off”, a ‘barn dance’ featuring Scott Manery and the Barnburners, will be held Saturday, September 12, 2015 at the Angry Bull at 7:30 p.m. This event is fun and fabulous so grab your cowgirl (or boy) and let’s whoop it up for Roof-Sit 2015. All proceeds benefit Roof-Sit. See you there! We are often asked questions about child abuse: indicators, reporting mandates, prevention, and community resources. One of the most important aspects of Roof-Sit is the opportunity for those who visit the mall headquarters to access all kinds of quality prevention information at no cost. We display a wide variety of informational pieces which address all aspects of child development and family dynamics, as well as many resource materials which discuss social problems. We are pleased to offer complimentary access to these materials and our staff members are always on site to help. If you don’t find what you need or would like to order extras – you have only to ask – and please do! Information is also available about all our child abuse prevention programming – is your school, day care center, church or service club interested? Once again, our staff stands ready to help! BOARD MEMBERS SUPPORT CAUSE Pictured here is Jeff Thomson working the Roof-Sit phones pen in hand - ready to help the cause. Jeff is just one of our willing board members who volunteer for everything from walking the walk, to folding t-shirts to manning the phones and outside “hut.” Jeff has been a catalyst in bringing many, many volunteers from SEMCO (his place of work) to work all aspects of Roof-Sit for many years. Also pictured is Debra Johnson, CAN Council Board President, whose advocacy for all kids and her enthusiasm for this cause is simply amazing. In this instance, Deb is managing the mic on the roof, where, after a full day of roof-sitting, she and Mike McCartan raised over $20,000 in pledges!! Many thanks to Jeff, Deb and all our board members who pitch in to help make Roof-Sit successful every year and daily support our belief that… “It shouldn’t hurt to be a child.” St. Clair County Child Abuse Neglect Council, Inc. 1107 Military Port Huron, MI 48060 READ ALL ABOUT IT
