Welcome New Parrotheads No new members this quarter Big Round Ball… Cheryl Bashor Latitude 38 PHC gets crabby article provided by J9Happ “Helping Our Community and Environment” The annual Theta Tau Theta Crab feed benefiting Diabetic Youth Summer camp was a fun night! There were 33 members and friends all ready for some good food and good fun. The reports are that this year’s crab was the best people had ever tasted, and a couple of members didn’t come up for air until completely stuffed. The moaning and groaning that were heard gives good reason why children are not invited to attend! After the crab and pasta, we took over the dance floor for some rocking and rolling. Overall, we helped raise over $4,000 for summer camp where diabetic kids can feel just like every other summer camp kid. There was one cautionary tale among all the fun. A person claiming to be a chef, who met up with some of the members (of Theta Tau Theta) in the liq- uor aisle of Safeway, and recommended a wine to go with crab, was invited to join the feed. She claimed also to be diabetic herself, yet proceeded to drink several glasses of wine, before downing ½ bottle of Jack Daniels, while the bartender’s back was turned. She soon could not walk, and appeared catatonic. An ambulance was called, and she was taken to the hospital. She was declared to not be diabetic, and released herself from the hospital a few hours later. Initially she was funny and weirdly engaging, yet the evening turned scary with the sirens and lights of the ambulance, and people trying to determine if there was someone to call and notify of the events. I think the lesson here is to not invite people you have only met once, in the liquor aisle of a supermarket… KVIE article provided by Sandy Riggs Bright and early on Saturday morning March 10th sixteen Parrot Heads representing the Lat38 PHC and PPOCD reported to KVIE in Sacramento for an 8 - 12 AM pledge drive shift. The Lat 38 PHC team was made up of Sandy & Bruce Riggs, Kat Fernandez, Gary Rockhill, Renee Hyatt, Michael Thompson, Kathleen Henry, Sandy Waters, and Becci Hanna. For the first two hours a show on menopause was aired and our group collected more than $12,000 in pledges! The second two hours was a show on one-skillet cooking and, as usual, we got a lot of airtime due to our colorful attire. Following our shift, all sixteen of us (plus an additional PPOCD member) went to the Blue Gecko Restaurant on Garden Highway for lunch. They had us set up to eat upstairs inside, but it was so nice out that we convinced our waitress to move us outdoors to the upper deck. After wiping down all the tables and chairs from their winter storage outside, the waitress accommodated our request. Volume 2007, Issue 2 Page 5 Getting to Know Your Phlock—Meet Kathleen Henry These 10 questions originally came from a French series, "Bouillon de Culture" hosted by Bernard Pivot. It is probably more familiar to many as the question James Lipton asks at the end of "Inside the Actor's Studio." I've found these questions interesting among friends. It's amazing what the simple answers to these questions reveal about a person's thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Barefootin...Bill Wright, President of PHIP Last Thursday, we experienced an astronomical event in the northern hemisphere called the Solstice, commonly known as the first day of Summer. Last night, additional evidence of Summer was provided in Pittsburgh, Jimmy Buffett entertained at another sold out show, for Parrot Heads, proof positive that Summer is here. Summer is important to Parrot Heads, because it is the season of a renewed freedom. Freedom to uncover an important part of our anatomy. Freedom to indulge in public displays of unabashed nudity. Freedom to let these naked parts roam unencumbered. Of course you knew I was referring to your feet. It's time to kick off your shoes, to reveal those toes. And bare feet are an important part of Summer, and Jimmy's music, and Jimmy's show. Jimmy performs in his bare feet and sets the standard for proper Summer foot treatment, and encourages us to do likewise. Parrot Heads in Paradise takes this encouragement very seriously. Well aware that our toes need sand and surf, this year's Meeting of the Minds is named Barefootin' Key West, a celebra- tion of podiatrical freedom. It is now time to register and make reservations to attend, Summer is here and your bare feet can feel the call. All of your friends' feet will be there, and your bare feet would be surely missed. Let Eva know you'll be attending today! Bill Wright President, Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc. (Continued from page 2) all enjoyed the sunshine, but were getting a little warm so the waitress rolled out the awning over us and all was well. Everyone enjoyed their lunch and the fellowship with other Parrot Heads. We are planning on getting together for lunch with the PPOCD group again. Also, the PPOCD invited all of us to their happy hours held at the Blue Gecko on the first Tuesday of each month. 2nd Annual Poker Tournament Latitude 38’s 2nd annual No Limit Texas Hold Em Poker Tournament was held on the evening of April 14th. The tournament was another huge success raising $2000.00 for Angelman Syndrome and CFRI. The silent auction alone raised $1663.00 and everyone felt they walked away with some really great items for a steal! Andy and Liz Barrow donated a week at their new condo in Puerto Vallarta which was the biggest money maker. Terry Reikson donated over $1000.00 in A’s and Giants tickets. The Brian’s donated 2 nites and dinner at the Atlantis, Reno and Ron Happ donated a Hooters Wing party just to name a few of the many items donated. I see you are all getting very creative in your donations and I want to thank each and every one of your for your generosity! This event wouldn’t be a success without your donations. The night was full of phun, priends and phood. Susie brought her yummy egg salad sandwiches again and Pam Brain won big bucks on the pull tabs! The poker was hot, hot, hot with Jenn Goudreau winning first place and $300.00 and Ryan Bashor again taking second place and $150.00. National Letter Carriers Food Drive Article provided by J9 Happ We worked the Contra Costa Food Bank Letter Carrier Food Drive at the Antioch Post Office on Saturday, May 12. It was a different experience than working in the Food Bank, but fun all the same. The hours were long, but it didn’t feel like a lot of work because the trucks did not all come in at the same time. There would be one or two, and then a few minutes before the next one or two came in. Julie from the food bank was appreciative of all our help and said this year was not as plentiful as last. She thinks it's due to the economy being poor. We did cheer for the letter carriers as they came in, and one was embarrassed to come up to us because he thought he didn't have enough donations! We assured him that every donation, no matter how small or large, makes a difference in a family's life. After our work, we set off for Humphrey's on the Delta. We had bad maps, and bad directions, but a Parrot Head's sense of nearest water must be keen, because we all made it! A good time was had by all. Relay is much more than a walk around a track. It is a time to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate those who have survived. During this event, we honor survivors during the Survivors Lap and we remember those we lost to cancer during the Luminaria Ceremony. Those of us with family and friends who have cancer watch as they fight so hard for so long and feel the pain of knowing all we can do is be there for them. As much as we want to fight part of the battle for them we can't. This relay might seem like the least we can do for those fighting cancer when actually it may be the MOST we can do for them. Together we will fuel the work and the hope that can help make a cancerfree future a reality. By joining together as volunteers and donors, our efforts help the Ameri- can Cancer Society strive toward a future where cancer doesn't take the lives of our friends and family. Sacramento Zoo Ice Cream Safari We will be starting sign-up for the Sac Zoo Ice Cream Safari by the end on June. More details to follow. Marine Mammal Center We will be working at the Marine Mammal Center on August 18th and this year I have scheduled the start time an hour later since most of us have to travel a ways to get there. Now we can sleep in an hour longer that Saturday and still support our dear friends at TMMC. Susie and Rus Hudson will be hosting a pool party after our shift at their beautiful home with the beautiful view of Marin County. October 6th Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Join us Oct 6th in taking steps to end Alzheimer's. The Latitude 38 Parrot Head Team will be walking at Treasure Island - San Francisco, CA.
