Newsletter Second Quarter 2015
APRIL-MAY-JUNE 2015 What's Up Phlock The Arizona Parrot Head Club Newsletter From The President Another great quarter of AZPHC activity is in the books! We had our monthly Happy Hours at The Gaslight Inn in Glendale, Uncle Bear’s in Ahwatukee and combined a third one with Parrot Head Bowling at Let It Roll Bowl in Phoenix. Thanks to Woody Joyner, Bob Rohn and Dave Seaholm for setting up the events. Nice job on winning the bowling trophies, Victor Cisneros and Toni Soderman! (I’ll let you guess who won Most Pins and who “won” Least Pins.) And, a big thanks to Barb Young for the phabulous trophies. Thanks also go to Scott Leeder for once again putting together the Parrot Head Masters Golf Tournament followed by a great Happy Hour. The Green Jacket was passed on to Rick Marking - congrats, Rick! John Young will be looking to earn that back next year, I’m sure. Penny and Robert Backhaus hosted a fantastic party in May at their lovely home. It was supposed to be a pool party but it was a little cold in the water, wasn’t it Tracy Kenison? The Desert Island Band provided the tunes and Penny had some fun games to play that were definitely adult oriented. Thanks to Penny and Robert for being such great hosts, DIB for entertaining us and to everyone who contributed to the donations to our Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Team. The first Saturday in June found a group of us helping out at Packages From Home, one of our long time charities. Thanks to Sonja Schroder for coordinating the event. It was fun and always heartwarming to know that we’re helping to send items to our troops overseas. We also donated $500 towards their shipping costs. We have some fun stuff coming up in July with the Christmas In July (natch) Party and separate house concerts with Mike Broward and Bob Karwin. Both are definitely big club favorites when it comes to the Trop Rock world. But, the biggest thing coming up is PARROT GRANDE! If you’re planning on coming and haven’t registered yet at http://parrotheads.org/2015PG/2015PGRegistration.Open.html, please do so ASAP. We’re the point where we’re trying to finalize some numbers so it would be helpful to know as close to possible how many are attending our fun filled weekend of August 28-30. Hope to see many more of you in the coming quarter. I’d love to have more names to drop in my next newsletter article! As always, if you have questions or ideas, feel free to contact me or any BOD Member. We’re here for you! Kathy Pfister Peace. Arizona Parrot Head Club President http://cheesehead-ramblings.blogspot.com/ PHiP Western Region Co-Communicator PARROTHEADS BOWLING – DUCK! As reported by: Dave Seaholm For the 4th straight year the AZPHC phlocked to a local bowling alley to heave deadly implements down a narrow lane trying to hit 10 wooden targets that stood in defiance against their attackers. Thankfully no one was hurt during this excursion and many of the pins fought valiantly and refused to go down. In other words, fun was had by all while none of us can be considered as the next coming of Earl Anthony, Walter Ray Williams or Dick Weber. However, the closest to greatness we produced this year was Victor Sisneros. He walks away with the highly coveted AZPHC Champion Bowler trophy. On the other end of the scale we have the winner of the lowest score – Toni Soderman. Again. Next year, Toni, you get to bowl with the bumpers up! Thanks go out to Barb Young who, once again, did an outstanding job creating the unique bowling trophies. Thanks to me for coordinating the event (shameless plug) and thanks to Let It Roll Bowl for daring to let us on the premises. And, finally, thanks to all the Parrotheads who braved the 110° heat to risk life and limb to participate or to cheer us on. Until next year… PARTY AT THE BACKHAUS 19TH HOLE By Penny Backhaus Memorial Day phriends phlocked together for a BBQ, phun and the now in-phamous pony races at the Backhaus' 19th Hole. Our hosts Penny and Robert contacted their Ozark Mountain Parrot Head Club phriends who shipped out their phun pony race track, complete with pink, blue, purple and green vibrating ponies; Not talkin' 'bout the 4legged kind here! Penny's two finger demo of the ponies mimicked Vanna White and Crash's super comedic instructions on stats and wagering split a few guts. We were able to raise a RECORD BREAKING amount for our charity -Alzheimers, with this new twist on the 50/50 raffle. Elizabeth Rainwater was the winner of the pony races! Thanks go out to The Desert Island Band, Sam Rainwater, and Susan King for providing great music for the afternoon. A phew brave souls enjoyed the pool which was a little cool due to the unseasonably low temperatures in the week preceding the BBQ. Maybe a couple of new entrants to try the annual Polar Plunge (Pfister)??? Or better yet penance for Phreds demise . . . Parrot Head Masters Tournament 2015 as reported byTammy 'St. Jello Shot Queen' Bauman On April 18th, the phinest Parrot Head golfers gathered to vie for the coveted Green Jacket. Silverado Golf Course was the scene of this gathering. With an 11am tee time there was time to have a beverage or two before the serious game of golf began. There was a tournament group ahead of us which caused a slight delay to our start (about 25 min.) I'm sure there were all sorts of shenanigans were waiting on the group in front of us and always had them in our sight. I think he was hung up on the tee time on our cart; I guess he didn't get the message that we didn't head out at a 11am; it was closer to 11:30. :) After the tournament all duffers, I mean golfers met up at Hooter's just down the street where Scooter had arranged for some free wings to get us started. A few Parrot Heads weren't happy we had to show our ID's, but hey if it gets you a drink! Rick Marking was the Green Jacket winner. Russ Althof was closest to the pin for the men and the Queen won it for the women (though the women really didn't get very close). A good time was had by all! Thank you Scott 'Scooter' Leeder for doing an awesome job of arranging this. Can't wait until next year! Scooter presenting Rick Marking the jacket and trophy Russ and The Queen, closet to the pin Packages From Home June 6, 2014 by Sonja Schroder On June 6th, 12 of our AZPHC members joined together at Packages From Home to pack 54 boxes of goodies for our service men & women deployed all over the world. The club also donated $500 to pay for the postage to mail them. This is a wonderful organization that accepts donations and packs care packages for the many men and women that fight for our country every day. Thank you all for spend your morning with us. .and also welcoming the 4 new members we signed up at the event. 16th Parrot Grande August 28-30, 2014 Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Come Party With A Purpose!
