Newsletter First Quarter 2015
JANUARY-FEBRUARY-MARCH 2015 What's Up Phlock The Arizona Parrot Head Club Newsletter From The President 2015 started out fast and furious! In the first three months of the year, we had four Happy Hours, three BOD meetings, a Club Meeting, Mardi Gras Party, the Salsa Challenge, participated in the Phoenix Heart Walk and volunteered at a pet adoptathon for PACC911. That was a lot of activity and the rest of the year looks like it will be at that same fun filled pace. Our experience at the My Nana’s Salsa Challenge stands out to me as the highlight of the quarter. Major kudos to Jan and Julie Lockwood for their super-efficient running of our booth. The years of being stuck chopping for hours are no more. They had every gallon ready almost before the event started. They, and our team of volunteers, rightly deserved the Best Booth and People’s Choice rewards that we received. Our Margarita Mix-Off results during the Salsa Challenge were off the hook! Barb and John Young with their helpers of Michael “The Goat” Bauman and Rick “Pirate Captain” Dudley brought down the house with a record bid of $10,000 for our Margarita entry on Saturday. You can read more of the details in this issue’s article but our team brings a lot of heart and soul to the event and deserves major accolades. Your Board of Directors and Committee Chairs are working on filling the calendar while balancing fun and charity. If you haven’t been out to see us in a while, I encourage you to check your emails or our website for something to attend. We would love to see you! Kathy Pfister Arizona Parrot Head Club President PHiP Western Region Co-Communicator http://cheesehead-ramblings.blogspot.com/ PACC911 Adopt-A-Thon As reported by: Tammy “Queen” Bauman Our charity for the 2nd Quarter is PACC911 (a group that works with many animal rescue groups) and they asked for 6 volunteers to help with their Adopt A Thon on March 29th at Fountain Hills. Pat Watt, Dave Seaholm, Judy Churchill, Tammy Bauman, Karen and Adam Lyons volunteered for this mission (it gave them an excuse to go look at all the cute little furry kids!) It was a very warm day (95 degrees); they ended the event an hour early for the safety of the animals and humans. The good news is we did raise money for PACC911 selling raffle tickets, and the best news: 73 fur babies found new homes! Of course after being in the heat for a few hours; we had to debrief across the street at the American Sports Grill. Great food and drinks. Check them out at PACC911.org and shop at their charity boutique on 40th Street and Thunderbird; Rescued Treasures. SALSA CHALLENGE/MARGARITA MIX-OFF Barb Young March 7 marked the return of the Parrot Heads to the My Nana’s Salsa Challenge & Margarita Mix Off. We hadn’t participated since 2011 but we got right back in the saddle quite easily! Thanks to Jan and Julie Lockwood, the Chairpersons of the event, we got a prime location and had lots of volunteers, all dressed in their Parrot Head finest attire. We had a “triple wide” booth right at the entrance and made the best Shark Bite Salsa ever! Our booth got two awards – Best Booth and People’s Choice. We brought in $1,700 in “vote” money – all of which goes to the sponsor, the Arizona Hemophilia Association. The Margarita Mix Off was another story. They really were very happy to have us back because our record of $2,500 for an auctioned Margarita still stood! So John and I concocted a Kiwi/Strawberry Margarita for the contest. Once again we were last on-stage to compete because they know the Parrot Heads BRING IT! And bring it we did – beads and koozies for the audience, John and Goat in their grass skirts with lime and seashell bras, and a huge blinged-out Margarita glass for the highest bidder. Rick Dudley added some Parrot Head flair parading around the guitar on stage and of course, Tammy Bauman and Kathy Pfister were taking pics. Our prize was a red Fender electric guitar, autographed by Roger Clyne and Little Steven of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. And the Hemophilia Association added a couple of items to sweeten the auction pot – like a 7 day stay at a Club Med! I gotta say, Chris Parker’s emcee/auctioneer talents are extraordinary! After a long battle between a couple of bidders, we definitely broke our record…….the Margarita sold for $10,000! Yep – NFL LongSnapper, Nick Sundburg won. This made the Hemophilia people so happy, the asked (maybe begged) us to come back on Sunday. We hadn’t planned on it, had no prize for an auction, but what the heck? John and I threw together a strawberry/banana Margarita and the Hemophilia folks gave us a prize package. We competed Sunday and got a paltry sum of $3,500 for our concoction! Not bad for no prep! Total for the weekend donated to the Arizona Hemophilia Assn through the Arizona Parrot Head Club’s efforts was $15,200! Thanks to all the volunteers and especially Jan and Julie for all their hard work in putting this together. No fingers were lost in the chopping tent, so I guess that’s a good thing! We’ll be back next year for sure! Too blingy??!! Nick the NFL guy – he wanted John’s lime bra with his $10,000 bid and Rick’s shark hat!! That’s emcee Chris Parker on the left. Choppers! Sonja, Rose, Woody and Karen. John and Goat…….no words. Chairpersons Julie and Jan Lockwood with our awards! Mardi Gras King Mike Finnegan and Queen Paula Masiulewicz Crime Dog and Woody (1/2 of Desert Island Band) Mardi Gras Party 2015 By: Barb Young Feb 14, 2015 marked the return of the Parrot Head Mardi Gras party! This year, Mardi Gras shared the spotlight with Valentine’s Day, so it ended up being the Sweetheart Mardi Gras event! We enjoyed live music from Woody and Crime Dog, one half of the Desert Island Band. I think they had the most fun of all singing and playing for us. Might have been that bottle of whiskey that was full when they arrived and conspicuously empty when they left. The Sweetheart theme ended up being appropriate because Mike Finnegan and Paula Masiulewicz found the babies in the cup cakes and were crowned King and Queen of Mardi Gras! The Club took advantage of Margaritaville Foods’ offer again this year and had Volcano shrimp (jalapeno stuffed). And, of course, the shot of the night was John’s Washington Apples. We did have quite a few Jello shots, too, thanks to Jello Shot Queen Tammy and a few others. On a sad note, this was the last official Parrot Head Club party Phred Parrot attended. When he joined some Club members (no names will be mentioned, KATHY PFISTER) on a trip to Belize, he decided to leave the party life of the Parrot Heads and live somewhere in the trees of Belize. A concerted effort was made to find him, but to no avail. And although he’s gone, he still remains in the hearts of all AZPHC members. Fly on, Phred! Thanks to everyone that attended the party. We were very excited to host it at our newly-remodeled Surfboard Bar in Our Back Yard! Hope to see you next year! 16th Parrot Grande August 28-30, 2014 Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Come Party With A Purpose! PARROT GRANDE AUGUST 28 – 30, 2015 We are proud to announce this year’s charity partner for Parrot Grande! USO Arizona will benefit from our “Party With A Purpose” weekend. For more than 70 years, the USO has been the only private, non-profit organization that supports our troops and their families throughout their service, from the moment they join, through deployments and as they transition back to their communities. USO is the way America says “Thank You” for their commitment to serve our country. They accomplish their mission by delivering highly valued programs; morale-boosting services and engaging entertainment that help them feel appreciated for their service. The USO is a 501(c)(3) organization established in 1941, and depends on the generosity of the American public to accomplish their mission of lifting the spirits of America’s troops and their families. In Arizona, the USO serves these brave men and women through the USO Center at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and through critical military community outreach. In 2014, troops and their families were served more than 50,000 times through the USO Arizona Center and other statewide programs. USO Arizona is a military hospitality suite for active military members that features friendly, helpful volunteers and a contemporary, relaxing environment. It maintains a café stocked with complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic beverages, a video gaming area, computer bays with Internet access, printing and fax capabilities, as well as a children's playroom. Service members can stop by for a bite or to put up their feet before or after their flight. There are many other programs and events throughout the year that USO sponsors to support the troops and their families. And what a theme for the Saturday night with Jimmy and The Parrots party! Notes from regarding Phred Where in the world is the Most Interesting Parrot? You have probably heard by now that Phred Parrot is missing. There are two theories as to how this could happen. The first theory is that the Parrot Heads in charge of Phred One of the last Phred images… during a day of drinking at the Palapa Bar in Belize overserved themselves and either left him at the bar or in the back seat of a cab. The second theory is that Phred decided to make his own adventure and become another Gringo in Belize. There are reward posters all over San Pedro with his picture on it. Personally I'm waiting to see him photo bomb someone's picture who is in Belize. Phred last seen for sure at La Palapa Bar At the very least, he could send the Queen his address so she can ship all his 'stuph' to him! Enjoy the journey Phred! IS “PHRED PARROT” your Friend on FACEBOOK?? Phred is our Mascot and is in charge of ALL OUR CLUB EVENTS! ONLY if you are his “FRIEND” – will you be invited to any Club Events on Facebook! Believe me – you don’t want to miss out on ANY of the upcoming fun! 2015 Board of Directors HAPPY HOURS BOD meetings President: Kathy Pfister CLUB MEETINGS Will rotate around the Valley.
