Kingswood Youth - Kingswood United Methodist Church
Kingswood Youth YOUNews AUGUST - DECEMBER 2016 NEWSLETTER KINGSWOOD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH God is Always There! Are you? What does it mean to be in a relationship with someone? Think about it. If you’re friends with someone you talk to them, right? You probably talk to them every week, maybe even every day. If a lot of time goes by and you don’t hear from them you probably start to wonder if they’re mad at you. Or maybe you get worried that something is wrong. You may know that your friend is really busy. There may be legitimate reasons why your friend can’t talk or hang out, but that’s usually only for a short amount of time and then you can catch up again. But what happens if your friend just stops communicating completely? What happens to your relationship? After a while it dies. And that’s exactly what can happen to our relationship with God if we stop communicating. We lose touch with The One who guides our steps, and life can get pretty bleak. You may find yourself in the position right now. Maybe you’ve stopped praying, reading your Bible, or going to church. Maybe you’ve stopped putting God first in your life and now things just seem dark and you’re not sure how to get things on the right path again. Don’t despair; there’s good news! While we are not always faithful to God, God is ALWAYS faithful to us and God never leaves us! We may disappear but God never does. So ask yourself, have you been a faithful friend to God? If not, do a reboot and start talking to God! God is there just waiting on all of us to show up. In order to help us figure out what the world is trying to tell us and decide if we agree, we explore movies, books and music looking for biblical lessons in our popular culture. Some of the movies we will view this semester are Inside Out, Remember the Titans, War Room, The Lorax and God is Not Dead. Come and see what you can learn about God in the culture around you! This class meets Wednesdays, 6:30 pm - 7:20 pm in room 303. Sunday School meets every Sunday morning, 9:45 - 10:45 am. The High School students meet in room 303 (the Youth Café) and the Middle School students meet in room 312. Students gather for Bible study that’s fun and informative. The teachers are there to help the students use the Bible to help guide them through tough questions that apply to their lives. It’s definitely worth getting out of bed for these classes! Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. Every Youth Fellowship is special, but there are a few that will be extra special this semester. Urban Escape Room - August 7, 2:15 pm – 5:00 pm. Kick off the start of the school year with this trip that will get your brain in gear! We will get locked into a room and have to solve clues to find our way out! Cost is $23. Cabaret Fundraiser This is a fun way to earn money for the retreats and mission trip that the youth have each year! How does it work? We partner with Dennis Lewallen, who provides the entertainment, and Chef Steve Mayer, who provides the gourmet quality meal. We set up the tables and chairs, serve the meal and clean up. The great part! All of the proceeds go to the youth and the more you serve the more money you earn toward your trips! Server Training is August 14 and Set-Up is August 21, both are 5:00 to 7:00 pm, The Cabaret is Friday and Saturday evenings, August 26 & 27. We will need servers starting at 5:30 pm each night. Parents are needed too, and their efforts earn credit toward their student’s trips! Remember, the more you help the more credit you get! Learning Life: Lessons For High School Students Beginning this fall and continuing all throughout the school year, we will have basic life lessons for our high school students. These are lessons to prepare you to enter the adult world on your own. Upcoming Events Summer Mission Trip - 2017 We’ll return to Hinton Rural Life Center in Hayesville, NC for this mission trip. Hinton Rural Life Center creates opportunities for work teams (adult and youth - rising 9th graders and up) to serve with others in repairing or building homes with local families and to grow in their understanding of faith in action. After a day helping families with needs around their homes we get together as a group and with other work teams to have fun with games, skits and more. It’s not all work, there’s plenty of time for play! The cost is $389, however, there are opportunities to reduce your expenses by serving at the Cabaret and helping out with KidStuff! Don’t let the cost keep you from participating in this great opportunity for spiritual growth! Scholarships and work opportunities are available. You don’t want to miss out! Be sure to save the dates for the Summer Mission Trip and Spiritual Life Retreat. More information will be available later this fall.
