Jaguar SS1 at Pebble Beach 2015

This SS1 Tourer is one of just 26 Open Tourers worldwide and was exported to the USA
in 1970. It was discovered by the present owner in Waco, Texas in a derelict condition
and was repatriated to Scotland where a full restoration was carried out during which
two rattlesnakes were discovered in the cylinder head. The car was brought over
especially for Pebble Beach and is the first time it has been back in the USA for 25 years.

From the Editor’s Desk
T
he annual Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance
took place on August 15 on a scorching
hot Sunday and as usual was a feast of
perfectly prepared classic motors from
around the world. Jaguars were amongst
the winners so I have extensively featured
the event in this issue. In fact the winer of
3rd prize in the late Pre War British Sports
cars was a good friend of mine, Colin
Stewart, who brought his rare 1934 SS1
Convertible all the way from Scotland and it
is with great pleasure that I show his car on
the front page. Colin was the only entrant from
Britain to win a prize.
Temperatures may be a tad on the warm side
right now but they will soon start to become a
little more comfortable so it is time to
reinstate our monthly driving events. In
September we will venture up into cooler
altitudes and visit Kitt Peak where we will
tour the world’s largest solar telescope
and enjoy a BYO picnic. Read all about it
on page 3.
I am very pleased to announce that Jim &
Monica Hart have kindly offered to host our
Holiday Party at their lovely home on
December 13. Mark your calendars!

erbie Hampton, a longtime member of
the Jaguar Club of Southern Arizona
passed away last fall. Herbie served on
the JCSA Board for many years and was a
valued member of our club. His wife
Claire, has now decided to sell his 1957
Jaguar XK 140HC. This car is in near
perfect Concours condition. The car is
located in Vail, Arizona which is just east of
Tucson. If you are looking for a truly
beautiful example of the XK 140 series,
this is the one.

Sungazing not Stargazing

O
ur previously announced binocular stargazing
event at Suguaro National Park has been
postponed indefinitely. The Kitt Peak person
responsible for this event has departed. Maybe
we’ll do this event in the future.
In its place, join us in a lovely drive through the
desert on State Route 86, concluding in a beautiful
drive up the mountain to Kitt Peak National
Observatory. A large portion of the drive and the
observatory are within the Tohono O’odham Indian
Reservation.
We’ll stop at the visitor’s center when we get there
to see what they have to offer and do a photo op in
the parking lot. For those that expressed an
interest, we’ll depart for a one-hour walking tour of
the McMath-Pearce solar telescope at 11:30 am.
The tour lasts a little more than an hour and is an
easy walk from the visitor’s center. The tour takes
you to the world's largest solar telescope. This
telescope is used by astronomers primarily during
daylight hours to study the nearest star, the Sun.
This unusually designed telescope was the brain
child of Dr. Robert McMath, one of the founders of
the Kitt Peak National Observatory. The McMathPierce is the largest solar telescope in the world.
Primarily involved in spectroscopic studies of the
Sun, this telescope can see farther into the infrared
than any other solar telescope.
But it is not just used during the day. Its very long
focal length allows it to bring high magnification to
the study of bright solar system objects like the
Moon, Venus, and Mercury. In recent years it has
even been used to study exo-planets.
After the tour, we will then travel a short distance
in our cars to the picnic area on the grounds of the
observatory for bring-your-own-picnic lunch. There
are no food facilities at the peak.
Kitt Peak is at an elevation of almost 7,000 feet so
it could be as much as 20 degrees or so cooler than
Tucson. For current Kitt Peak weather, go here.
Public Facilities: No food or gas facilities are
available at Kitt Peak. Public restrooms are located
adjacent to the visitor parking lot. A handicapaccessible restroom is located in the Visitor Center.
There are also restroom facilities at the picnic area.
NB: There is a Border Patrol checkpoint on
Highway 86 coming back from the observatory so if
you’re not a US citizen you should bring your
passport.

Pebble Beach Concours 2015
Best in Show - Issota Fraschini Tipo 8A Cabriolet
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (August 17, 2015) — An Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A Cabriolet that once
turned heads and garnered top prizes in the classic era glided to victory at the 65th Pebble
Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday.
The competition drew 219 cars from 16 countries and 29 states to the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. It also raised over $1.8 million to help people in need. Through the
Pebble Beach Company Foundation, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, these
charitable funds will benefit 100 local charities.
The winning car has an extremely long 145-inch Italian 1924 Tipo 8A chassis, which was
acquired in the early 1930s by Swiss Carrosserie Worblaufen to be used as the basis for a
new sport cabriolet. The finished car was displayed at the 1932 Geneva Auto Show and won
the Grand-Prix d'Honneur at Cannes in 1933. After being shown, the car passed through
the hands of just three owners prior to being purchased by current owner Jim Patterson of
Louisville, Kentucky.
Asked what he loved most about the massive cabriolet, Patterson chose to focus on its
small details. "I love the cigarette lighters," he said. "You should see them! I wondered a
while ago if they worked, and I've got a blister on my finger to show they do."
The car's win at Pebble Beach marked the second win for Patterson. His 1933 Delahaye
D8S De Villars Roadster was named Best of Show in 2010. "I won here in 2010 with an allwhite car, and now I've won with an all-black car. I don't know if I've run out of colors or
what," he joked.
There were many strong contenders for Best of Show this year, including a 1914 RollsRoyce Silver Ghost Kellner Torpedo Phaeton owned by Doug Magee Jr. of Wolfeboro, New
Hampshire; a 1937 Delahaye 145 Franay Cabriolet owned by Sam & Emily Mann of Englewood, New Jersey; and a 1953 Abarth 1100 Sport Ghia Coupé owned by Grant Kinzel of
Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
