E-NEWS ~ April 2015
Epworth: a United Methodist Church Newsletter
Letter from our Pastor of Emerging Generations
To Epworth, my church and family,
About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice,“Eli, Eli lema sabachtani?” My God, my
God, why have you forsaken me?
Matthew 27:45.
Throughout this Lenten season we, your pastors, have challenged you each week to
examine the characters of Christ’s passion story; not with the intent to better
understand the story, but rather to force you to examine yourself. Lent is a time to
ask ourselves the difficult questions and to push ourselves to grow toward the
people and community deserving of Christ’s sacrifice. However, throughout our
Lenten season this year, Epworth has not only been challenged at an individual level,
but as a community. We have felt hurt, betrayed, disappointed, and frustrated at
times during this season. As a church we have found ourselves asking God, “Eli, Eli
lema sabachtani?”
But I write to you today not a message of sadness or despair, but rather a message of
hope. For weeks we have carried our cross, we have endured crucifixion, but in our
own cries to God we are reminded that the resurrection is coming. Jesus always
warned his disciples of his coming death, but not so they would weep or lose hope,
but so when the time would come they would not allow their grief to be the end of
them. Rather, Jesus told them of his death so they would be prepared for His
resurrection.
Amidst our despair I encourage us to celebrate and praise God for the opportunity to remain faithful. As we wait for God to
call us out of this time in our church’s life, to raise us up from the ashes of our journey to the cross, we stand together in
love and faith, knowing that God is always with us. Great things await our journey together.
Remember as Jesus uttered those words, “Eli, Eli lema sabachtani?, He did so reminding us of Psalm 22, that begins with
the phrase, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Yet this Psalm
ends with the reminder that God’s will will be done.
From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows. The poor will eat and be
satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him, may your hearts live
forever!
All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the
families of the nations will bow down before him, for dominion belongs to the
LORD and he rules over the nations. All the rich of the earth will feast and
worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—those who cannot
keep themselves alive. Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told
about the Lord. They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet
unborn: He has done it!
- Psalm 22: 25-31

of Christ's questions in our own lives
and lead to a deeper appreciation of
His great love and concern for each of
us. Christ asks: "Why are you
troubled and why do doubts rise in
your mind?" (Luke 24:38) "Why are
you so afraid? Do you still have no
faith?" (Mark 4:40) "If you greet only
your brothers, what are you doing
more than others?" (Matthew 5:47)
How do we answer these and the
many other questions the Lord asks?
Come and share our spiritual
purpose.

one of the most exciting weeks of
Epworth’s year; VBS! A full week of
fun, celebration, music, and
crafts….VBS is one of the great
opportunities we have to welcome
children from all over our area to

welcomed hundreds of kids into our

their families experience the joy that
is VBS.
There are so many
opportunities to help, from food prep
to hall monitor, from group leader to

SAFE TEAM:
A newly formed SAFE Team has been
gathered since January to update and
review our existing Safe Sanctuaries
Policy. Safe Sanctuaries is the
program developed by the United
Methodist Church to proactively
prepare our building, our staff, and
our volunteers to provide a safe
environment for all of our Youth. The
SAFE Team has been hard at work
over the last two months and looks
forward to bringing the updated
policy to Pathway Leaders and
Church Council by May, 2015.
THANK YOU TEAM! Revpat
Stewardship:
They’re Here!
The kiosks are up-and-running at
Epworth!
One is
permanently
mounted to a shelf in
the Narthex, next to
the New Members
board. The other is
portable,
and
available for use in Fellowship Hall
(or elsewhere) to expedite active
donations or sales.
The kiosks are easy to use, working
much like an ATM.
There are
instructions posted by the kiosk in
the Narthex and often, people
standing by who can demonstrate its
use.
Use of the kiosks is, of course,
completely optional: If you prefer to
give using a check or cash or by
setting up direct electronic payments
– that’s great! The kiosks simply
provide a convenient option for those
who want to donate – either routinely
or ad hoc - but who don’t have cash or
a checkbook handy. (So many of us
no longer carry either.)
Interested in using the kiosk, but like
to have something to contribute to
the collection plate as it circulates?
We have card “tokens” for you to use!
The cards – the size of a standard
business card – are available by the
kiosk, in the connection pad folders,
and in the pew holders where the blue
collection envelopes are located. Each
card represents a donation given
electronically. If you’re an electronic
giver – via either the kiosk or on-line
– please just place one of the cards in
the plate as it passes.
We’re excited to have this new giving
option available at Epworth! Please
feel free to stop by the kiosk to see
how it works, whether or not you feel
this is an option you want to use.

The Family of Marion Hatch wishes to
express our deep thanks for your
many acts of kindness to us and to
Marion during her lengthy struggle
with declining health. Your prayers
during the long period of time she has
been on the church prayer list and
your visits, notes and cards have
encouraged us and brought comfort to
her. The knowledge that she is now in
heaven and no longer has to struggle
with debilitating illness brings
comfort and consolation to us. We are
grateful for the ministry of our church
staff and for the many expressions of
condolence and care we have received
from so many of you. Thank you so
much.

Hospitality:
Did You Know…..




We have a Hospitality Team? This
is a group of Epworth members
who meet four times a year to
review activities of the Hospitality
Pathway. Mostly this team acts in
an advisory capacity, although at
times members are actively
involved with an event. We always
welcome new members to our
team.
Volunteers are still needed to help
for Sunday Morning Fellowship? –
to set up the beverages and snacks
from 7:30 to 9:00. Duties include
setting the tables, preparing coffee,
cold beverages and plating snacks.
Following the 9:15 service ( about
10:30 to 12 noon) volunteers
replenish beverages and snacks,
wash the cups, plates (in the
dishwasher) and coffee pots. Sign
up sheets in Fellowship Hall each
Sunday. Written instructions are
available to assist if needed.
We are grateful to have had more
volunteers to help on Sunday, but
we also need to have folks who are
willing to be in charge – to oversee
the setting up of beverages and
snacks as well as the clean-up at
about 11 o’clock. Training and
written instructions are available.
We have Special Event Greeters?
These folks welcome people
attending events held at Epworth.
Interested in becoming a Special
Event Greeter – contact Ann Bailey
at [email protected].
To volunteer to help with Hospitality/
Fellowship contact Linda Bruce – 2261108 or [email protected].
Don’t forget that we are now on the
Epworth website under the “Get
Involved” dropdown menu. Thanks to
Chuck Taylor and Marj Shannon from
the communications pathway for their
assistance with this.

“Everyone Has a Story to
Tell...What's Yours?"
Rev. Vicky is asking you to think
about your own personal story of what
Jesus Christ has done in your life and
how your life has changed especially as
it relates to your time here at Epworth.
Here is what we're looking for:

Brevity: your story should be brief,
able to be read in two (2) minutes
or less.

Presentation: a willingness to
present it live or record it for
showing at one of our services. (If
you want to share your story but
you don't want to present it
yourself, we can provide a proxy
presenter for you.)
How do you share your story?
First, write down your testimony.
Read it aloud to check your time (less
than two minutes). Second, send it to
John Hammett, our Story Coordinator.
[email protected]. Or drop
your story off in the Church Office in
an envelope with his name on it.
Why are we doing this? It's all about
connections. Sharing our stories will
connect us with others and them with
us. We discover the many ways that
God is working in the lives of our
Church body. Our stories will inspire
many others in their walk with the
Lord. Our faith will grow stronger; our
improved connections will become
bonds tying us together in the Lord.
Epworth will grow stronger and
attract more people.
"Everyone has a story to tell." We can
hardly wait to hear your story. If you
have questions, contact John by email
or call him at 302-227-1078.

Social Justice:
Fair trade coffee, tea, chocolate, and
olive oil items are sold by the Social
Justice Pathway the first Sunday of
every month in Fellowship Hall. Look
for the display table from 8:30 am to
11:30 a.m.
What does “fair trade” mean?
Primarily, the concept of fair trade refers
to obtaining products from small
farmers and small farmer cooperatives
and assuring that the grower and his/her
family receives a fair price for their labor.
Fair trade suppliers – like the Equal
Exchange Coop that supplies the
Epworth Social Justice Pathway – are
typically structured to cut out some of
the “middle-men” found in a traditional
food supply organization. These might
include buyers, exporters, importers,
distributors, etc. Eliminating these
entities leaves more money for direct
Pathway Pages ~ April 2015
payment to small farm families while
keeping consumer prices competitive.
Fair trade certifying and member
organizations usually also agree on other
fair trade principles, including long-term
direct trade relationships; prompt
payment of fair trade prices and wages; a
ban on child, forced and otherwise
ex ploit ed labor; environmenta l
sustainability; investment in community
development projects where the small
farmer lives and works, and transparent
organizations.
How does a consumer know that a
product advertised as fair trade is truly
fairly-traded? Of course, a consumer can
conduct his/her own research into the
organization supplying the food. But,
there are 3rd party inspection and
certification organizations, such as
Fairtrade America and Switzerland’s
Fair for Life (fair trade certification
symbol of Institute for Marketology).
There are also fair trade membership
organizations which evaluates the fair
trade commitment and practice of
companies against membership criteria.
These include the Fair Trade Federation
and the World Fair Trade Organization.
Epworth’s Social Justice Pathway has
relied upon the evaluation of Equal
Exchange Coop by the United
Methodist Committee on Relief
(UMCOR). But, this summer, Equal
Exchange’s coffee, chocolate and sugar
products will be certified as meeting fair
trade standards by the Institute for
Marketology and will carry the Fair for
Life label. Equal Exchange’s fair trade
teas will continue to be certified by
Transfair USA.
These certifications will bring
further assurance that purchases of fair
trade products at Epworth are supplied
using fair trade practices with farmers
and small farmer cooperatives.
And, don’t forget to buy some
delicious Equal Exchange
chocolate to help your
celebration of Easter, April 5!

Women...
The United Methodist Women
Reading Program for 2015 is ready to
go. 20 copies of the 2015 catalog are
in the Branford Lounge on the
wooden bookcase along the window
side of the room. Take one for
yourself. Also on the cart you will
find a folder of materials describing
the Reading Program. You can sit
down and explore the 2015 Catalog
and the reading lists of library books
available in Delaware. It is most
important that you pick up a report
form which indicates the categories
for the UMW Reading Program; use
this form to record your readings and
to be sure you read a book in each of
the five categories.
There will be a few books on the
cart that we have purchased or people
have contributed. You can bring the
recommended books you have
purchased and already read and leave
them on the cart for another reader.
You can also read UMW books for
youth and children, and Wendy
Herman will place some of them on a
cart near the children’s library. Be
sure to check out any of the youth or
children books that you want to
borrow.

Staff Changes in Epworth’s
Music Ministry
During the last month, the music
ministry at Epworth has seen several
changes. Praise Team Director Julie
Fair and Music Director Andrew
Monath are no longer working at
Epworth. We have put a plan in place
to ensure that the music still rings
out in praise to our God.
Doug Yetter has been appointed
Interim Music Director. In addition
to his role as organist, Doug will have
responsibility for directing the
Chancel Choir, while also
coordinating the music for the Praise
Team at our 9:15 a.m. contemporary
service, and working with music
selection for the Memorial Bell Choir.
On May 1st, the position of Director of
Music Ministry will be posted and
the SPRC will begin interviews, with
input from Praise Team, Chancel
Choir and Memorial Bell Choir.
Epworth is very blessed to have a
large talent pool of musicians,
preachers, teachers, and most
importantly, prayer warriors on
which to call. We have had no
difficulty in finding folks who, on an
interim basis, are stepping forward to
help us in our call to be disciples’ of
Christ. As we finalize plans for
interviewing for the music positions,
we are blessed that Doug will be
working with Beth Nevill as the
interim director of the bell choir. In
addition, David Zentz and Thom
Pemberton have agreed to work with
Doug as Praise Team directors on an
alternating schedule.
To quote Epworth’s Kitchen
Maestro Reber Whitner, “Are we
blessed, or what?”

surrounding the church
will soon be peeking
out as the weathers
warms up. We have a
small team of people
who have begun taking
care of the gardens, but we can always use more…
more hands, more shovels, more tender loving care.
In joining the team, all we ask is that join us when you
are available - hopefully - regularly and help keep our
gardens in good growing order.
If this sounds like a job for you, please contact Kenny
Mahan at [email protected] or 302.227.7743 ext
101.

MIRAM’S TABLE
THANK YOU FROM THE KEEFERS
Ed, Miriam, and I want to thank you so
much for your constant love and support.
When we started the adoption process, you
all surrounded us with overwhelming love
and anticipation of her arrival. Upon her
arrival, the love continued accepting her with
arms opened wide! Blessings overflowed!
Shortly after my return from Congo, we
announced our hopes for providing a new
nutrition program in honor of Miriam, called
Miriam’s Table; which would allow us to feed another 150 children in the Mpasa
Region. Again, you responded with so much love, prayers, and support that we were
able to build a facility, hire and train a staff, screen the children, and begin the feeding
just one year later!
Many have pledged financially as monthly supporters, for which we are so thankful;
others have graciously given donations that help us continue our commitment. Even
more have supported our fundraisers. Our first Dining Out for Miriam’s Table at
Mariachi’s was so much fun and well attended. The
Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Mission Pathway was
another great time for both food and fellowship!
Your gifts support our efforts in our commitment to the
children and their families to not only provide a daily
nutritious meal, but to introduce and nurture them with
the love of our Lord Jesus Christ. Please continue to
pray for our efforts to be able to serve even more
children in 2015. Our current number is about 260
children each day. We know that there are at least 100
more children that are awaiting our services.
