KID is a nonprofit organization dedicated
to protecting children by improving children’s product safety.
KID was founded in 1998 by Linda Ginzel and Boaz Keysar,
the parents of sixteen-month-old Danny Keysar who died in his Chicago
childcare home when a portable crib collapsed around his neck.
KID’s mission is to PROMOTE the development of safer
children’s products, ADVOCATE for children, and EDUCATE
the public, especially parents and caregivers,
about dangerous children’s products.
Dear Friends,
In our annual report, you’ll find a snapshot of what KID has been doing to
accomplish our mission. You may support KID because of a personal story, a
belief in improving child product safety, or in support of a board member or safety
advocate. This report covering KID’s fiscal year from June 2011 through
May 2012 demonstrates the impact of our programs, education, outreach, and
advocacy. The passion with which we do our work is to prevent children from
being injured and in honor of all children injured or killed by unsafe products.
When parents and caregivers call, we hear tragic stories of preventable injuries
that motivate us to encourage manufacturers and regulators to make further
strides and focus more on child product safety now.
KID prides itself on its proactive, credible approach. We partner with existing
organizations to reach a larger audience of parents, grandparents, caregivers, and
policymakers. Through our social media outreach, along with good old fashioned
networking, we are reaching a wider, more national audience while connecting with
key players across states. Child product safety is a worldwide issue and we are
working to connect all the pieces of the puzzle through testimony, sitting on
panels, staying up to date on the most recent published data and requesting
manufacturer information through the Freedom of Information Act.
Our programs look at child product safety from all angles. Teach Early Safety
Testing (TEST) integrates information about design safety, testing and standards
into existing undergraduate engineering curriculum. Safe from the Start (SFTS)
focuses on educating vulnerable populations about dangerous products and safe
sleep. The Debby Sayah Grandparent Program looks at the unique role
grandparents can play in creating a safe environment for their grandchild.
KID’s staff and board members have taken a keen look at what is to come.
With the passage of Danny’s Law and its implementation, we are re-focusing on
expanded program impact and outreach as well as lending our voice to more local,
state, and national policy efforts to further strengthen child product safety. While
we have made gains, we want to continue to build on our successes -- to honor
those children, including Danny, who have lost their lives unnecessarily.
Awareness and action are ongoing. Read about our progress and then support
KID as we broaden our reach to prevent unnecessary child deaths and injury
from unsafe children’s products.
Sincerely,
Nancy A. Cowles, Executive Director

PROMOTE
THE DEVELOPMENT OF SAFER PRODUCTS
The first and best defense against
dangerous children’s products is
making sure products are safe before
they find their way to homes and child
care facilities.
To that end, KID provides a strong
voice for consumers in the ASTM
International (ASTM) subcommittees
that set voluntary safety standards
for nursery products and toys. ASTM
standards committees are primarily
made up of manufacturers, testing labs
and consultants. KID brings the voice
of consumers into the discussion.
Consumer members such as KID are
vital to add balance and we are vigilant
in keeping up to date on hazards and
new products that should be
addressed through the standards. Our
work is more important than ever
now that these standards act as the
foundation for mandatory federal standards. KID continues to add insight
and the consumer viewpoint when
those standards are considered by
the US Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC).
4
This year, KID had an active role in the
development of an ASTM standard to
address the hazards posed by the
cords of infant monitors. This issue
was brought to ASTM and KID by
the parents of Savannah, who strangled
in her crib on the monitor cord.
Throughout the process, KID was a
voice for a product design solution, rather
than just relying on a warning label.
We still continue to work for a standard that eliminates accessible cords
on these devices meant to be placed in
close proximity to an unattended child.
Other standard activity in FY12:
• In February, the final rule on bed
rails became a mandatory standard.
• The new rule on cribs, the strongest
in the world, became effective in
June 2011. As part of Danny’s Law,
named in memory of Linda Ginzel
and Boaz Keysar’s son, any cribs sold
this year – new or used -- must meet
these tough new standards. Child
care providers and other places of
public accommodation have until the
end of 2012 to assure all cribs in
their facilities meet the new standard.
• As required, CPSC adopted the
newer version of the ASTM F963 toy
standard, addressing new hazards.
• The CPSC also voted to implement
strong new testing requirements –
meaning children’s products will be
tested for safety before they are sold.
• And other standards were in the
pipeline – CPSC staff was diligent in
making sure the new standards
address all known hazards before
they are adopted.
KID with US Rep. Schakowsky, IL Atty General Madigan,
SIDS of Illinois and Action for Children to mark adoption
of tough new crib standard.
KID, working in coalition with other
consumer, health and science groups
such as Consumers Union, Consumer
Federation of America, and the
National Research Center for Women
& Families, submitted comments on
many of these standards including thirdparty testing, infant swings and play yards.
These new standards are required
under Danny’s Law and we take our
role in representing parents and caregivers in their development seriously.
Another way KID works to promote
safer products is by working with
undergraduate engineering programs to
integrate design safety into their
curriculum. Our Teach Early Safety
Testing (TEST) program, started in
2003, provides materials to professors
and others working with student
engineers. In addition, KID works with
student teams at University of Michigan
and Northwestern University, offering
design projects to both teach design
safety and investigate solutions to real
world hazardous products. Guiding the
next generation of product engineers
to design safer children’s products is
one more way we fulfill our mission of
preventing childhood death and injury.
In this fiscal year, teams at Northwestern
developed high chair and bassinet
prototypes.After looking at injury data,
their prototypes addressed the most
frequent injury patterns while keeping
the product affordable and incorporating caregiver input for features and
usability. At Michigan, a student team
looked at recent infant deaths in incline
sleepers – product meant to keep a
baby at an angle. In addition to products
developed for this, parents sometimes
improvise by having babies sleep in car
seats, swings or other reclined products.
The team developed an inclined product
to be used in a crib or freestanding.
While the team designed interesting
solutions to known hazards, KID determined that even with those measures,
the safest place for an infant is in a safe
crib with nothing else in the crib and
continues to promote this message.
Last November, KID Executive Director
Nancy Cowles addressed a large group
of students at Missouri University of
Science and Technology. TEST materials
are being revised to develop more alternatives for professors to incorporate
the materials into existing curriculum.
SAFE CHILD WALK-A-THON
To commemorate the effective date of
the new world’s strongest crib standard,
Michelle Witte and Susan Cirigliano, both
mothers who lost sons to unsafe
drop-side cribs, organized a Safe Child
Walk-a-thon on Long Island. The event
raised over $5,000 in much needed funds
for Kids In Danger and helped to spread
the word about the new standard. These
families see the new standard as the legacy of their sons, Tyler and Bobby, and all
children who have been killed or injured
in dangerous cribs.

ADVOCATE
FOR CHILDREN
While Danny’s Law which passed in 2008
moved children’s product safety forward by
leaps and bounds, there is so much more to
be done. KID continues to be the national
voice to strengthen regulatory solutions
to safety.
6
KID ED Cowles with CPSC Chairman Tenenbaum and the
first annual Chairman's Circle of Commendation Award
Our influence in the child product safety
realm was recognized in December 2011
when Executive Director, Nancy Cowles
received CPSC Chairman Circle of
Commendation Award. Chairman Tenenbaum
presented this first of its kind award, saying,
“Nancy is the voice of child safety.”
children had been killed in defective cribs
to speak out and, with our allies and a
strong voice from CPSC, stopped the footdragging in its track. KID continues to be
the eyes and ears for parents – checking
online sale sites, stores and even rummage
sales for dangerous older cribs.
And the year brought plenty of opportunities to continue to speak out for safety. We
are proud to report that Chicago passed the
first ever ban on the sale of crib bumper
pads. These are unnecessary decorative
items that have been linked to suffocation
and strangulation. Despite lobbying efforts
by the manufacturers, the Aldermen listened
to the testimony of SIDS of Illinois and KID
and voted for the ban, effective in April 2012.
The new ban has raised awareness of the
issue nationally. Maryland is now poised to
follow suit –the Department of Health and
Mental Hygiene has proposed a statewide
ban to be effective in June 2013.
KID worked with Congress and allies to
protect consumer interests as a bill (H.R.
2715) was developed to address implementation issues with the 2008 Consumer
Product Safety Improvement Act. We were
able to protect and strengthen the key
provisions of Danny’s Law.
On the national front, while standards were
being developed and strengthened as indicated above, a last minute effort by some
retailers and supported by the manufacturers was made to delay implementation of
the new rule requiring that only cribs that
meet the tough new standard could be sold
after June 28, 2011. After dozens of deaths,
the recall of millions of cribs and a decade’s
long delay in improving the crib standard by
these same players, neither CPSC nor
consumer advocates like KID were willing
to allow the delay. KID mobilized parents
around the country, urged parents whose
KID is committed to improving recall
effectiveness. Even after recalls are issued
on dangerous products, thousands and
sometimes hundreds of thousands of
products are left on the market because of
failed recalls. Our annual reports on recall
rates and a look at the reports on the
CPSC’s new database, SaferProducts.com,
reaffirmed KID’s commitment to improve
recall effectiveness rates. Nancy Cowles
put together a landmark workshop with
Rachel Weintraub of Consumer Federation
of America, on recall effectiveness at the
February Symposium of the International
Consumer Product Health and Safety
Organization of which she serves on
the Board. The panel brought together
retailers, manufacturers and technology
companies to develop new resources and
discuss improving the effectiveness of
recalls. Much lively discussion was generated
and steps were developed to make progress.
EDUCATE THE PUBLIC,
ESPECIALLY PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS
KID’s mission has always included
education and outreach – making sure
all parents and caregivers have the
information they need to keep their
children safe AND be advocates for children’s safety. This group is always so
surprised by what they didn’t know
before hearing from KID.
In a major effort to expand our
reach and provide tools for keeping
children safe, KID, with the help of
WeMakeItSafer.com and Table IX,
developed a KID mobile site. Access
www.KidsInDanger.org from any smart
phone or other mobile device and along
with KID’s lifesaving material in mobile
format, you can also
search for recalled
products.
Unlike
some other mobile
search tools, KID’s
mobile site integrates the search
with other product
safety news, KID’s
three steps to safety,
Family Voices and
more.This puts child
product safety information at parents’
fingertips no matter
where they are.
This fiscal year KID increased our
Spanish language outreach, to reach new
vulnerable populations in Chicago and
around the country that may not have
language specific resources. Hannah
Thompson interned over the summer to
develop new materials in Spanish and
spread KID’s safety message.
We are continuing this effort – look for
new Spanish language resources on our
website this year.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan
serves as a great advocate for children’s
product safety. This year she called
together health, consumer and children’s
organizations along with retailers and
others to form the Safe Home Coalition.
KID joined the formative group and
actively participated in the first order of
business to develop educational materials and increase outreach on the dangers
of furniture and television tip-overs. We
also joined the Attorney General at her
annual release of the office’s Safe
Shopping guide highlighting recalls before
the holidays, and this year, drawing public
attention to the dangers of button cell
batteries.
With the requirement that cribs in child
care facilities meet the new tough standard by the end of 2012, KID was asked
to provide training for all child care
licensing staff in Illinois. In three trainings
around the state, KID presented not only
the requested information on the new
requirements, but vital safety information
for all providers.
Recognizing the role that product safety
plays in safe sleep for infants, KID joined
Cribs for Kids and Safe Kids in launching
CAUSE: Coalition against Unsafe Sleep
Environments. The group’s mission is to
multiply the efforts of our individual
groups to reach vulnerable populations
with safe sleep information and advocacy.
KID has taken the lead in bringing unsafe
products and their role in sleep related
deaths to the coalition.

KID HONORS SONNY GARG WITH BEST FRIEND AWARD
At this year’s 12th annual event on May 24, 2012 at Fulton’s on the River in Chicago, KID
honored another long time friend and supporter of KID. Sonny Garg, Chief Information
and Innovation Officer at Exelon, received the Best Friend Award for his instrumental role in
developing local and national responses to protect children from
unsafe products and for his strong leadership and support for KID.
Sonny worked with public officials to pass legislation to eliminate
the sale of recalled products in Chicago. He later joined KID's
board and served as chair of our Advocacy Committee, working
to draft early legislation that was later incorporated into CPSIA
and led to the world’s strongest crib standards.
The reception included award presentation, raffles, auctions, and
remarks from KID co-founders and Mr. Garg. Many thanks to
Event Chair Lisa Turano Solano and our Honorary Host
Committee of KID stars, led by the Honorable Jan Schakowsky
and Marjorie Benton. More than $70,000 was raised to support KID’s lifesaving programs. We
thank our sponsors, auction and raffle item donors and program book supporters and well as
our wonderful guests.
Delightful food tastings were presented by amazing Chicago Chefs including those from Vivo,
312 Chicago, Sunda, Tony Hu Gourmet, Fulton's on the River, Sugar Bloom Bakeshop and
Chicago Pastry.
KID held its first Best Friend Award Night in 2001, honoring E. Marla Felcher, Ph.D. for her groundbreaking book, It’s No Accident: How Corporations Sell Dangerous Children’s Products.
