Another chance to dance
Leadership announces semi-formal winter dance,
open to all students, to be held in January
by Madison Cunningham
Musselman High School Leadership students are changing things up
a bit this year by adding a Winter Formal dance to the year’s agenda.
Cassie Greenfield, a junior
here at Musselman, is in charge of this
new event along with Mrs. Vanderwijst. The two were talking about different ideas to help with fundraising for
their National Conference and decided
on another dance.
“This would help us out so we
don’t have to pay as much money out
of pocket,” said Greenfield.
The dance will be on Saturday, January 23rd from 8-11 p.m. in
the cafeteria. The dress will be semiformal.
“Girls can wear a nice dress
and heels and guys can wear khakis,”
said Greenfield.
It will be for all grades and the
colors will be white, iridescent, and
blue.
“I hope that freshmen take advantage of this,” said Greenfield.
Tickets will be eight dollars on
the first two days
the week of the
dance and then
will go to ten dollars for the rest of
that week.
This is the
first Winter Formal that Musselman
High School has done, so they hope to
have a good turnout.
“It’ll be a lot like homecoming,” said Greenfield.

The class of 2016 is excited
about their senior year. Pep rallies,
dances, spirit week, Friday night
games, senior week, and of course
walking across the stage and graduating are just a few of the events seniors
are looking forward to.
Senior Trey Stamey is looking
forward to this year and is thankful for
all the memories.
“Going to the state basketball
tournament was my most memorable
thing about high school. Even though
we didn’t win, just going to the tournament was a great experience that I will
never forget,” said Stamey.
“I am most excited about playing my last season of basketball and
baseball. I am also excited to finally

Gochenour takes over
in the library
by Alexxus Gladden
Our very own History
teacher, Mrs.Gochenour, has taken
over the position of Musselman
High’s librarian.
Mrs.Gochenour has been a
member of Musselman’s family for
many years. She is from Inwood,
West Virginia and has been teaching for twenty-three years. Twentyone years of her teaching has been
at Musselman as a history teacher.
Mrs.Gochenour has many
hobbies, but her two favorites are
collecting firetrucks and spending
time with her three grandchildren.
She has two children, Jason and
Kasey. Kasey has two daughters,
Bailee and Lilah. Jason has one son,
Cole. She loves her children and
grandchildren very much, and she
is very proud of all of them.
Mrs. Gochenour misses
having the same 130 students every
day and learning about each and
every one of them. “I feel like I’m
on an island,” said Gochenour. She
loved teaching History and misses
it.
Mrs.Gochenour loves
being in the library. “I like the
smell of books and coffee in the
morning,” Gochenour stated.
She is looking forward
to the fact that nothing is ever
the same in her new position as
librarian. She also loves all the
people.
Although she enjoys
running the library, there are
some challenges. The biggest
problem she faces is that the library is public, and while dealing with classes and students
coming to the library, she also
has public visitors. This sometimes causes a challenge, but she
always figures it out and has a
great time doing it!
She wants everyone to
come visit her in the library. She
is looking forward to making the
library her own and having a
wonderful year!
Students who find themselves late before first period must now report to the tardy
table located by the vending machines up
from the student parking lot ramp.
Mr. Long and Mr. Price work the
tardy table every morning from 7:40 to
8:15am.
Mr. Long loves working at the tardy
table. “It’s a great, relaxing way to start my
morning,” said Long.
Students were not so excited about
the tardy table though. “This is so stupid and
a waste of my time,” said Junior Leroy Penwell. He also stated that he is often tardy,
which may explain his frustration.
Some students like the convenience
of the new tardy table. “I actually really like
the tardy table. It’s a lot easier,” said Senior
Alan Miller. This was Miller’s first tardy.
Mr. Long said he has never had a
negative experience with the students and
usually they give him no problems.
Many of the students visiting the
tardy table were late due to sleeping in.
Students will need to get up on time or
they may have to visit the tardy table!

Skipping school for school
by Sarah Muskett
Every day, students of all
grades look forward to their favorite
time of day: 2:40, when the last bell of
the day rings, signaling the end of the
day. After 7 periods, students are ready
to leave.
But for many seniors, after
sixth period, or even fifth period, is the
end of their day. This is because they
participate in O.S.E., or Out of School
Environment.
O.S.E. is an opportunity for
seniors to earn college credits while
still attending high school. Some college classes, such as English 101 and
College Math, count as dual credits.
This means students can take one class
and earn a credit for high school and a
credit for college.
Students can also take classes
just for college credits. Musselman
students can enroll at Blue Ridge CTC,
Potomac State, and WVU.
Senior Emily Turpel, who attends English 101 at Blue Ridge, said,
“O.S.E. is really cool. It gives me time
to do my homework and relax after
school.”
Through this program, students only have to stay in school for
five or six periods, depending on how
many college classes they are enrolled
in. The college courses take the place
of their sixth and seventh periods.
After school, students have to
opportunity to go to class, go to work,
or go home and do homework. This all
depends on the students schedule and
preference.
Pink for a cause

Pink lines the walls of stores,
from clothing to cleaning products.
Women all around the nation celebrate their strength and the strength of
others like them, and children learn
about the dangers of breast cancer.
Surely you’ve noticed the sudden change of color around the country, celebrating the women, and men,
who have fought against breast cancer. Though you may not notice or
even care about Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is very personal to
many families around the world, including my own.
When I was twelve years old
my parents sat down me and my
brother. They
then explained
that my mother
had breast cancer.
My mother was
more fortunate
than most
women, and a
few months later,
on March 15th, 2012, she was declared
breast cancer free.
Many women don’t have the
same luck my mother had. According
to cancer.org, there are estimated to be
231,840 new cases of invasive breast
cancer in 2015 and about 40,290
deaths.

Keep having fun all winter long
by Haley Baker
With November here, everyone
knows that the holidays are coming
and so are our favorite fall and winter
traditions!
Musselman students are looking forward to their favorite cold
weather activities.
Senior Grant Burke said he’s
excited about “mud boggin”, football,
golf, snowboarding, cuddling, Thanksgiving, and pies.”
Senior MacKenzie Glaze said
she enjoys snow tubing, skiing, carving
pumpkins, and “apple pickin.”
Junior Breanna Howard said
she loves relaxing, sleeping, and being
lazy.
Students aren’t the only ones
ready for the change of seasons.
Teacher and cheerleading coach, Mrs.
Robinson, enjoys going to pumpkin
patches, bonfires, sweatshirt weather,
layering clothes, spending time with
family, and shopping for the holidays.
For me, I can be a bit more
basic in this weather. I mostly look forward to hot chocolate mixed with hot
caramel latte from Starbucks. Big
sweaters, boots, scarves, and holiday
movies get me excited.I also love cold
nights and snow on the ground.
Staying inside means that
you can play board games or video
games, bake, watch movies all night,
and cuddle up with family and
friends.
Fall brings Halloween, Thanksgiving
and Black Friday. You get to spend
time with everyone, buy Christmas
presents for loved ones, and eat the
best food that you can ever dream of.
This time of the year is when
you can relax after your busy summer. You can finally kick back and
enjoy being inside.
But even if you love to be
outside and active and don’t really
enjoy the inside as much, you can
even go outside and play in the snow,
or go snowboarding and skiing.
Fall and winter are some people’s favorite time of the year, including me. So get curled up with your
favorite movie and some hot cocoa.
Call up your friends and have a night
in or call them up and have a night
out. Anything, just enjoy the weather
and enjoy the holidays!
Happy Holidays everyone!
In the News
anksgiving has something for
everyone to enjoy
by Kiara Brown
Fall is in the air and before you
know it Thanksgiving will be here.
Thanksgiving is a holiday that
most Americans believe has been celebrated since 1621 when Pilgrims and Indians started the tradition after the first
harvest in the New World. But, in reality it was not an official holiday until
1863 when Abraham Lincoln made it a
holiday to be celebrated the fourth
Thursday in November.
A majority of modern day
Americans use this holiday as a day for
spending time with family, giving
thanks, feasting, and football. Let’s not
forget that some people begin preparing
for the biggest shopping day of the
year- Black Friday.
Who doesn’t love a great game
of football, whether it’s before, during,
or after the meal? The schedule is set,
and there is a great line-up of games for
fans to watch.
Hopefully there is a game for
you to get excited about. Senior Chase
Stroop said he’s excited for the Bears
and Packers game.
Games start at 12:30pm and do not end
until late night.
Schedule:
12:30pm- Eagles/Lions
4:30pm- Panthers/Cowboys
8:30pm- Bears/Packers
Another tradition that may or
may not be for everyone is getting
ready for Black Friday shopping. Going
through sales ads, looking for coupons,
checking online deals and mapping out
what time to be at certain stores for the
best deals is part of the Thanksgiving
tradition that kicks off the Christmas
shopping season.
Senior Bethany Larrimore said
she’s excited to go to American Eagle
on Black Friday for the sales.
So, don’t forget to watch out
for those ads. If you are brave enough
to go shopping on the busiest shopping
day of the year, be prepared and be
safe.
Happy Thanksgiving to you
and your family.

Holiday Food
Don’t just carve those pumpkins,
make some pie!
by Emma Pratt
It’s that time of year again.
That time you can feast your stomach
as much as you want and still get
away with it. That guilt-free time
when you don’t feel bad about having a fifth helping or gaining an extra
pound or ten. It’s that time of year
we like to call Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving is all about family
gatherings, being thankful for everyone and most important of all-gorging yourself with as much turkey,
stuffing, and mashed potatoes as
possible! But everyone knows
Thanksgiving wouldn’t be much
without the dessert to top it all off.
So this year, leave some
room at the end of your meal for this
mouth-wateringly delicious pump-
kin pie recipe (only the best orange
pie around, of course!):
Bake Time: 1 ½ hours
Ingredients: 1 Pie Crust (Premade)
3 eggs
¾ cup sugar
½ cup ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
Pinch ground cloves
Pinch salt
2 cups canned/fresh pumpkin puree
or cooked
2 cups half-and-half, light cream or
whole milk
the spices and salt. Stir in the
pumpkin puree and add half-inhalf.
2. Warm this mixture in a
medium saucepan over mediumlow heat, stirring occasionally
until it is hot to the touch (do not
boil).
3. Place pie plate on a baking
sheet. Pour the mixture into the
crust and bake for about 30 to 40
minutes until the mixture has a
moist consistency.
4. Let cool and serve warm or at
room temp.

anksgiving favorites
by Cheyenne Greer
Have you ever thought about what your favorite thing about thanksgiving?
My favorite thing about thanksgiving is that
you can eat as much as you want without getting
judged. AND you get to eat dessert!
My favorite food to eat at thanksgiving is
mashed potatoes and stuffing, especially the kind my
mom and grandmother make. It makes me feel all
warm and fuzzy inside every time I take a bite. I wish
I could tell everyone the secret ingredient they use, but
it is as sacred as the Krabby Patty secret formula.
I also love the fact that you get to be around
the people you love. My favorite thing is getting to
spend time with my family, watching football and eating great food. Plus, I like to make a plan of attack for
Black Friday.
Last, but not least, I like Thanksgiving because
it means Christmas is coming!
So, this thanksgiving, go out and have fun
Black Friday shopping, eating and spending time with
your family!

Shoppers eager
for Black Friday deals
by Levi Burress
With November right around the corner, are
you ready for the upcoming holiday season?
Christmas isn’t as far away as you think, and
that leaves many Americans with a dreaded thought in
the back of their heads - Christmas shopping.
The American way of doing things is to procrastinate until the last minute; but why not get it done early
on Black Friday?
Whether you are shopping for your family or
just treating yourself to a good deal, “The day after
Thanksgiving” is a good way to save money if you don’t
mind a crowd.
For years, stores opened their doors at 6 a.m. for
shoppers. But in recent years, the opening time kept getting earlier, and in 2012, stores started opening on
Thanksgiving Day.
High school students have mixed feeling about
Black Friday shopping. Senior Raina Edwards said, “I
don’t like crowds, so I don’t go”.
But some like Black Friday shopping.
“I like finding a good deal,” said Senior Anthony Whitmore. “I wonder if Burger King has a Black
Friday sale on their chicken fries?”
Some people don’t want to shop on Thanksgiving Day, especially since it’s the day you are supposed
to be grateful for what you already have. But, for others,
the chance to snag some good deals is just too much of a
temptation.

e Martian blasts
off in theaters
by Mikayla Bayer
Described as a movie about a man (Matt Damon) left behind on Mars after a sand storm, many would think it is the same
old sterile outer space film, but The Martian was a surprisingly
refreshing film.
Matt Damon, as his character Mark Whatney, is definitely far from what is expected. Mark Whatney, this nerdy and
funny botanist astronaut adds humor to the very bleak situation
he finds himself in through the entire movie, even once saying
“In your face Neil Armstrong” for surviving on Mars and growing his own food. Although Whatney is the huge focus of the
movie, it isn’t just him talking to himself the entire time.
Once Whatney is left by his crew, he makes contact with
NASA on earth. This brings about back and forth scenes between
Whatney and NASA. In one scene, Whatney’s obstacle is finding
food and water. In another scene, NASA’s obstacle is bringing
this man back before he dies. This adds to the movie and helps to
make it more interesting than watching one man talk to himself
for two hours.
Of course it isn’t the best movie ever. The supporting actors don’t feel as if they fit, some of the solutions seem extremely
unbelievable, and a movie lasting 141 minutes long seems a bit
much for someone stuck growing plants on Mars.
Overall this movie is not your traditional film and would
only be recommended to those individuals interested in space
and action. I would recommend this movie to an individual looking for a feel good movie. It is suspenseful and leads you to think
Whatney is going to die on this planet, but his spirit and smarts
help him through.
The Martian mixes smarts, humor, and suspense into a
movie that makes it enjoyable for most.

Rifle season soon approaching
by Jacob Gosnell
Freshmen athletes reach for success
by Camille Ratliff
This year at Musselman High
School, we have a numerous amount of athletic and successful 9th graders.
Not only do we have an undefeated freshmen football team, but we have multiple
freshmen on the soccer teams, volleyball
teams, and of course the marching band.
Freshmen football player Noah
Miller plays defensive end. He said that his
favorite thing about the football team are
the coaches: “They are never okay with
anything less than perfection. We go into
half and they always have something to
pick at because they know we’re capable of
better.”
Brin George and Adam Busey agree
that their favorite memory of the season so
far was beating Morgantown 28-11.
Center and Tackle Cameron Duvall
said his favorite quote is the one on the
weight room wall: “Heart, Pride, & Determination.”
The marching band also has many
talented freshmen that contribute to being
the number one band on the Atlantic East
Coast.
Zach Hartman, a member of the
alto saxophone section said that being able
to travel with his best friends is definitely
the highlight of the season. Hartman also
loves how funny the band director
Mr.Knepper is.
However, Hartman’s biggest ac-
complishment this season is learning the
Ironman song. “It was very challenging at
first,” he said, “but after I learned the
music, it became my favorite song to play.”
Our Lady Applemen volleyball
team is stocked with 9th grade talent this
season.
Freshmen include Maddi Cox, Sara
Beth Edwards, Jaden Gray, Meredith Lewis,
Kaliea Petry, Rachael Ratliff, Kiersten
Schleuss, and Sarah Wright. With the help
of all this young talent, the team is 10-0 (on
their schedule).
Middle hitter Rachael Ratliff said
that her favorite memory of the season so
far is at the Virginia Beach tournament
when the whole team was swimming in the
ocean and a photographer asked them if he
could take pictures of them.
“It was so awkward and funny,”
said Ratliff while explaining the story, “I
still crack up when I think about it.”
Beth Rand and Zanele Nyabusha
are also having the time of their lives but on
the girls soccer team. They loving spending
time with their friends on the field, while
also getting things done.
Musselman truly does have many
athletes to watch for in their next four years
here at MHS. No doubt these 9th graders
will continue to be successful and represent
the Applemen in a fabulous way.
The Class of 2019 is determined in
reaching nothing but success.
With the warmer
air moving out and the
cold, bitter air moving in,
the start of the 2015 West
Virginia buck firearms season approaches.
Thousands of hunters fill
the woods each year in
search of a whitetail buck.
To bag a deer you
need to be prepared. The
main thing you need to find
is a good location. A good
location is the best way to
get a deer.
You need to look for
sign. During the summer
months, look mostly for scat. The
deer during the summer time
will migrate towards food as
they try to fatten up for winter.
In mid-October start
looking for rubs, or markings on
the tree from the deer’s antlers.
Scat is also vital during this period.
Try to take advantage of
early bow season to actually get
out and scout. Bow season is a
great opportunity to get out
there and see deer. There is nothing better than hands on scouting.
Another step to getting a
buck this rifle season is sighting
in your rifle. Make sure you have
the best suited ammunition for
your gun. Guns are like people
and they can be picky with their
ammunition.
“My 30-06 shoots 150
grain CORELOKT best and my
dad’s shoots 180 grain the best. It
just depends” said Senior Kyle
Sidow.
Put the gun on paper.
Shoot different rounds at the same
target and see which round groups
best. Try to stick with one weight
(grain) of bullet, and try different
ammunition.
With all of these tips, you
should be successful in bagging a
deer.

What makes a good teacher?
by Kaitlyn Hanson
A good teacher can be defined by multiple things. Some may
say a good teacher is the one you
learn the most from. Others may say
it’s the one that gives you the most
freedom. It could also be said to be a
little bit of both.
An aspect of a good teacher is
one you can genuinely learn from. All
students learn and retain knowledge
differently. A teacher that can find
those types of learning methods for
all students can be extremely helpful.
Teachers that manage to fit all types
of learning into their lessons are great
because they benefit all students.
Sophomore Wesley Walker
said a good teacher is “someone who
always puts in the extra effort to teach
in different ways so the whole class
understands what’s being taught.”
However, just because a student learns a lot from a teacher
doesn’t mean they always like them.
In the long run a teacher you learn a
lot from can always benefit you.
When you can tell a teacher is
passionate about helping you learn, it
can make a huge difference on how
you do in the class.
Junior Leah Ratliff said a
good teacher is “someone who not
only wants to help the students further their education and knowledge
but someone who understands them
at the same time.”
Teachers that are active with
the class also help students learn a lot.
It’s hard to learn from teachers who
never leave their desk.
A good teacher can be one
you have fun with. Students always
love teachers that let them do what
they want. The teachers that ease
back on the rules are the classes that
get students through the day. It helps
balance out the stresses of school. Just
because a teacher lets you have fun
and goof off doesn’t mean you’re always getting the most educational
benefits out of that class.
Teachers that can be both fun
and educational can also be great.
There is a balance between education
and fun that few teachers can find.
Classes that can be taken seriously
but still have the free time to relax are
classes students also look forward to.
They care about your education but
also understand students have a lot of
other things to worry about other
than their one class.
A lot of aspects go into making a good teacher. Overall, every
type of teacher can benefit your education in some way. Most teachers try
their hardest and really do want you
to learn.
