M
aple Grove Raceway has always been a hot bed for sportsman racing,
NHRA style. Back in the early 1970’s the main focus on weekly
competition were the popular NHRA class racing eliminators.
Competition, Modified, Super Stock and Stock. On any given Saturday night you
could see the lanes fill up with the best sportsman racers in NHRA.
During this period many of the loyal Maple Grove racers would go on to win
national championships, class champions at NHRA and other awards along the
way. As we often said, “If you could win your eliminator at Maple Grove you could
win any major NHRA race!”
During this period in 1971 the Money Trail series was initiated and through the
years it has been refined and has revolved into what the current structure has turned
into, based on ET bracket racing. Again, the series boasts of some of the best racers
in the country competing for the year end points fund of over $28,000.00. Maple
Grove’s ET team have captured a total of 13 NHRA Summit ET Finals since the
program was initiated in the mid- 1970’s. No other track has garnered as many
team championships!
In 2007 Maple Grove management wanted to showcase the stars of the Money Trail
ET Series at the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a special incentive program. We
approached NHRA’s Sr. VP of Racing Operations, Graham Light, with an idea
to bring some of our best ET racers to the nationals and offer them a showcase
eliminator in front of the throng of avid NHRA fans at the Nationals.
Graham was open to the idea and wanted to help with the program, quickly giving
his blessing to the program. He saw the value of showcasing ET racing in front of
the crowd and over the years he and the NHRA staff have done everything in their
power to make the weekend a special one for our racers.
The Money Trail ET Shootout’s format has changed over the years into what it is
today, a 16 car and bike field. During the course of the 15 race Money Trail series
all winners, runner ups and semi-finalists names are placed into a special drawing.
Drawings are held at the completion of the last race of the season where Super
Eliminator, Pro Eliminator, Street Eliminator and Top Bike each has a container with
the names placed in each respective container. Some racers might have only one chip,
while others can have more based on their finishes for the season. To say the least,
drawing night is very interesting to witness to see who is picked to run the Shootout!
Each eliminator has 4 representatives in the competition. For the first two
rounds each eliminator competes against their fellow eliminator qualifiers and
the winners of each eliminator face off starting in the semi-finals to see who wins
the grand prize of an EZGO golf cart. This year’s grand prize carries a sticker
price of $7,900.00! Not bad for a day’s work at the NHRA Keystone Nationals.
The runner up doesn’t go home empty handed as a 36” HD television is offered
courtesy of PC Richard and Son, a great supporter of NHRA racing and Maple
Grove. Other sponsors making the program possible are D&G Golf Cart Service,
Awesome Vinyl and Potty Queen.
Over the years the golf carts have been awarded to 1 Super driver, 3 Pro Drivers, 1
Street driver and 3 have been awarded to Top Bike with one rider taking 2 carts home!

THE SUN IS OUT, BUT THE AIR IS COOL.
Several thousand fans wait in anticipation for both the minor earthquake from thousands
of horsepower and the distinct smell of nitromethane. It’s an annual ritual for these loyal
racefans who make the annual trip to Maple Grove Raceway for the NHRA Nationals.
It will be the 31st edition of the race that has become known for some of the quickest and
fastest times even set in drag racing. Fall weather conditions should be in full force when
the biggest names in the sport arrive at The Grove for the Oct. 1-4 event.
Why do legends such as John Force, Tony Schumacher and Jason Line look forward to
showing their stuff here every fall? Sure, it’s the homestretch of the NHRA points race, and
once again the Keystone Nationals will be part of the Mello Yellow Series’ Chase for the
Championship.
But since 1985, a total of 35 national records have been set, and reset, on Maple Grove’s
quartermile strip.
Standing since 2012 is Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Andrew Hines’ run of 6.728 seconds. That
year was an incredible performance weekend, as no less than five records, covering all four
NHRA Pro classes, were set. Besides Hines’ mark, Jason Line set both time and speed
records in Pro Stock with a pass of 6.477 at 214.35 miles per hour. Antron Brown went
3.701 in his Top Fuel dragster and Jack Beckman made a pass of 3.986 in his Nitro Funny
Car.
With championship points at stake, and three races remaining after Maple Grove, expect
some bigtime efforts from the race teams. Racers such as Schumacher, Brown, Beckman,
Matt Hagan, Erica Enders, Greg Anderson, Eddie Krawiec and Hector Arana Jr. will be
attempting to put themselves into position to hold up that final trophy at Pomona in
November.
If you want to experience it for yourself, the best way is to buy a
reserved seat. Tickets can be purchased 24 hours a day via www.
maplegroveraceway.com, or over the phone at
610-856-9200 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Prices for reserved seats are on Friday are $45 for adults, $15 for juniors ages 6-15 and $5
for children 5 and under; on Saturday, $60 for adults, $20 for juniors ages 6-15 and $10
for children 5 and under; on Sunday, $60 for adults, $20 for juniors ages 6-15 and $10 for
children 5 and under. Another advantage of getting a reserved seat is that you’re closer to
the pit area and main food court.
General admission tickets for those who want to walk-up to the ticket office on the day
of the race. GA tickets on Friday are $40 for adults and $10 for juniors ages 6-15; on
Saturday, $50 for adults and $10 for juniors ages 6-15; on Sunday, $50 for adults, $10 for
juniors ages 6-15. Children 5-and-under are free in GA every day.
Don’t forget, with all tickets, pit passes are included for no extra charge. Walk over and see
your favorite teams tune-up their cars, up close and personal.
Racing starts at 8:45 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday. Those who arrive
early on Sunday can take part in the SealMaster Track Walk at 9:40 a.m.

T
he NHRA Keystone
Nationals continue
as one of many
events held at Maple
Grove Raceway that hosts
iconic names from the
drag racing community.
Drivers such as the legendary
John Force and four time
Maple Grove Raceway winner
Tony Schumacher. Both of
which made a significant
contribution to the history at
Maple Grove Raceway.
In 1993, John Force was
the first racer to reach the
milestone of 300 mph at
Maple Grove in a Funny
Car. Each year since,
Force continued to make
improvements in his runs
and became more familiar
with the track. That sense of
comfort led John Force to
victory celebrations in fall
2001, after realizing he won
a Wally trophy in addition to
setting an NHRA National
Record of 4.731 seconds.
A decade later at Keystone
Nationals in 2011, John Force
ran a speed of 319.22 mph
(1,000 feet) which held as the
Maple Grove Raceway track
record for two years. It was
not until he returned in 2013,
that he broke his previous
title and set the current track
record of 323 mph.
Amidst his 30 plus years of
racing at Maple Grove, Force
won a total of seven Wally
trophies, which sets him
apart as the only driver to win
more than a handful of times
at a single track (‘89, ‘90,
‘93, ‘94, ‘97, ‘01, ‘13). John
Force continues to show his
dominance at Maple Grove by
returning each autumn and
working towards his eighth
Wally and another broken
record.
Even though the 16-time
NHRA World Champion,
John Force, continues to
smash records, he is not the
only NHRA driver to make
racing history here at the
Pennsylvania dragstrip. Tony
“The Sarge” Schumacher
ran his Top Fuel dragster at
a speed of 333.08 mph in
October 2001 during the
18th Annual NHRA Keystone
Nationals. His run in 2001
not only set the track record
but also the NHRA National
Record. Two years later,
Schumacher set an NHRA
national record of 4.441
seconds during Keystone
Nationals here at Maple Grove
Raceway. Tony Schumacher
continued his search for
speed in 2006 by earning
bragging rights for setting a
track record of 4.440 seconds
(1,320 feet).
Schumacher also possesses
the title of most wins at
Maple Grove with five in Top
Fuel (‘03,’04,’05,’08,’14).
Three of which were back
to back to back, making
Tony Schumacher tied with
Bob Glidden (‘87, ‘88,
‘89) for most consecutive
wins here at Maple Grove.
Tony Schumacher heads
into Keystone Nationals
with hopes of claiming his
eighth NHRA Top Fuel
Championship.
Another man searching for
championship points is
five-time Mello Yello Pro
Stock World Champion, Jeg
Coughlin Jr.. He and Georgia
native Warren Johnson are
tied for the title of most
victories. Both have won four
Wally trophies while racing at
The Grove. Coughlin Jr. hopes
this year he can break the tie
and finally claim a fifth Wally.
of most victories in the
designated class here at
Maple Grove Raceway. Her
slice of record setting racing
history is seen as no surprise
given her overall race wins.
In NHRA history, her 41
wins and counting are
the most ever for a female
driver. Even more impressive
is that Sampey’s victories are
the second most in NHRA
Pro Stock Motorcycle
history.
NHRA Keystone Nationals
have thirty years in the
books and with names like
Schumacher and Force
racing here each October
there are sure to be more
records set.

rittany Marie got her start like many emerging Country artists
singing at Churches, Fairs, Showcases, and Festivals. She made the
commitment to pursue music as a career in 2013. Now, 2 years
later, she has opened for National Touring Acts such as: Chris Young, The
Band Perry, Chase Rice, Brett Eldredge, Aaron Tippin, Clint Black, and
More! She has proven she can hold her own in the Country Music Industry
and is diligently working to further her career indefinitely. Her career
has also included singing the National Anthem for many events, one being a
NASCAR race in April of 2015 at RIR.
The release of her single ‘Changed’ has already sparked industry attention
from young and old and features a Music Video that was accepted and
released through VEVO in June, 2014. Not satisfied to remain still in her
career pursuits, Brittany Marie is looking forward to the release of her debut
self-titled EP ‘Brittany Marie’ in 2015. The Album will have a country rock
sound and will feature a cover of the song, Paint It Black, by The Rolling
Stones. Watch out for Brittany Marie, she is definitely on the Music Chart
horizon. Maple Grove Raceway is proud to have Brittany Marie perform the

His lofty on-track accomplishments and contributions to racing is why he also

Rod Association event titles and the 1973 American Hot Rod Association World
Championship.
Don, who will be 71 on Nov. 4, 2015, assembled a Top Fuel team for son
Tony Schumacher in September 1998, and in its first full-time season the
following year it delivered the first of 13 NHRA season titles to DSR when they
won the NHRA Winston (now Mello Yello) Top Fuel world championship.
In addition to Tony’s eight championships, DSR has added five more with current
drivers Matt Hagan (Funny Car in 2011, 2014), Antron Brown (Top Fuel in
2012), Jack Beckman (Funny Car in 2012) and former driver Gary Scelzi (Funny
Car in 2005).
T
ony Schumacher and the U.S. Army
team led by crew chief Mike Green
registered Don Schumacher Racing’s
13th NHRA world championship in
2014 and won the Army’s eighth by
dominating the NHRA Countdown to the
Championship six-race playoff in the
Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.
That is only one of the phenomenal
accomplishments of “The Sarge,” who holds
nearly every record in the NHRA Top Fuel
category.
Among his NHRA Top Fuel records are: most
series championships (8); most event titles (80);
final rounds (137); No. 1 qualifying positions
(79); most consecutive world championships (6/2004-09) and has won a record
nine U.S. Nationals titles.
He also is the first to driver to reach 330 mph at 1,000 feet (330.30 mph,
Charlotte, 2012) and quarter-mile (330.23 mph, Phoenix, 1999). He is one of
three drag racers to earn the prestigious Driver of the Year Award in 2008 after he
won 15 of 18 championship-round appearances during the 24-race season.
Schumacher, a Chicago native living in Austin, Texas, owns five event titles from
Maple Grove Raceway including the 2014 event and has more than any other
driver at the track. One of his six No. 1 qualifying positions at Maple Grove took
place in 2014.
His entry into drag racing was in a 160-mph Super Comp dragster in 1992, but
it didn’t take long for him move up to something much faster. In 1993-94, Tony
drove the 290-mph Odyssey Jet Dragster owned by Wayne Knuth, and graduated
to a Top Alcohol Funny Car in 1995-96.

In 1996, he drove in four NHRA Top Fuel events and was runner-up at the first
one, the prestigious the U.S. Nationals.
In their first full-time season the following year they delivered the first of 13 NHRA
season titles to DSR when they won the NHRA Winston (now Mello Yello) Top
Fuel world championship. The following season, DSR partnered with the U.S.
Army in what has been labeled one of the longest-running and most successful
sponsorships in motorsports.
In 2006, Tony rallied from a 336-point deficit to take the championship in the final
round of the season the year before the six-event Countdown to the Championship
was instituted. He not only had to win the final round but set an NHRA national
elapsed time record in the process. He did both. The year after that, Tony had to
win the last event title of the year and he did.
A
U.S. Naval reserve veteran, Hank
Endres raced a series of top fuel
dragsters out of Pennsville, NJ,
most famously, his own Nirvana with
partners Chip Brown and Bill Clark.
He won numerous major events at
Maple Grove Raceway including the
Pennsylvania Dutch Classic and the
NHRA World Championship Series.
His Dutch Classic win and a series of
track records earned him a match race
against “Big Daddy” Don Garlits.
Endres got his start in racing in 1960 at old
Woodbine Dragstrip in New Jersey with a
flathead-powered ‘34 Ford roadster. Hank
teamed with Biddy Winward on a blown Dodge altered, and then with Junior
Culler and Joe Cantrell in the Jr. Fuel ranks before striking out on his own with the
“Lil Rebel” front engine dragster, the former Ed Pink “Old Master,” in 1971. He
then partnered with Chip Brown and Bill Clark in a series of Nirvana Top Fuel cars
from 1973 to 1979. After finishing second twice, Endres won the 1978 NHRA
Division 1 Top Fuel title and was always a threat to win Pro Fuel Dragster circuit
events. In the 1980s Hank drove the #1 team car for John Carey at both NHRA
and IHRA races as part of Carey’s Delaware-based multi-dragster team. He walked
away from a frightening crash in Milan, MI in 1987 but returned to finish his
driving career in the JB Racing entry of Jeff and Susan Bernstein in 1989.
Endres was inducted into the East Coast Drag Times Legion of Honor in 2012 for his
contributions to the sport. In his later years, he was involved in restoring and showing
classic cars. Hank Endres died in 2014 at the age of 76 but will always be remembered
as one of the finest Top Fuel racers in the history of Maple Grove Raceway.
Hank is survived by Bonnie Endres and daughters, Justine of Pueblo, Co, Laura
of Carneys Point, NJ. granddaughter, Amanda of Clarksville, TN, brother Julius,
Sister Patti of Ft. Pierce, Fl and sister Sandy of Louisburg, NC.
P
aul “Dodger” Glenn of New
Castle, Delaware was a hardcore
racer in the 1960s and 1970s
following years of athletic success as a
student in his high school years.
He first competed in Modified Stock Cars on
the very tough Pennsylvania short tracks and
then saw his first quarter mile machine make an
exhibition pass down the main straightaway of
a local stock car track. He was instantly hooked.
The excitement, noise, and brutal acceleration
appealed to him, and he knew that was the way
he wanted his driving career to go: in a straight
line!
Beginning with a lumbering ’51 six cylinder
powered Chevy, Glenn then built a small block S & W gas dragster. Within two
years he advanced to the Top Fuel ranks, driving for several East Coast car owners.
He loved Top Fuel Dragsters but Funny Cars raced several nights a week in the
1970s and offered Dodger a chance to make money doing what he loved. His first
Funny Car effort was in Jim Fox’s Frantic Ford in 1974, and they had a steady and
successful run. He eventually bought the team and battled weekly with touring
teams at match races and NHRA events.
Glenn brought more to the Frantic Ford than just the ability to get the car from
one end of the track to the other. Dodger had the ability and desire to mingle
with the fans, and that helped raise the popularity of the team. Dodger Glenn
could easily be compared to modern day crowd favorites like Ron Capps or Jack
Beckman.
During a semifinal race against future world champion Bruce Larson at Maple
Grove in July 1978, Dodger suffered an engine explosion and subsequent crash
which claimed his life. He was only 33 years old and left behind wife Cathie,
and two young daughters, Shawnee and Shannon.

The Pennsylvania Dutch Classic has been
an annual part of Maple Grove Raceway’s
schedule since 1971.
As one of the oldest, and most prestigious events on the NHRA
Sportsman schedule, the Dutch Classic, which is also the Sony/
PCRichard.com Northeast Division National Open, draws
hundreds of racers from around the country to compete in the
cool, fall air.
And that cool air brings about some of the quickest passes, not
just for the season, but also for the NHRA record books.
Fans who make it to The Grove on Oct. 9-11 will see cars
attempting to rewrite the NHRA’s record book. How many
records will be broken? You will have to come out to The Grove
and find out.
As has been the case for the past few years, the Dutch Classic
will be the weekend after the NHRA Nationals, so many of the
same Sportsman cars will be back at The Grove in less than a
week! Racing classes include Stock, Super Stock, Super Comp,
Super Gas, Super Street, Top Sportsman and Top Dragster.
Racers will start arriving in Wednesday, Oct. 7 with parking from
noon to 8 p.m. On Thursday, Oct. 8, there will be a Test and Tune
between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. with a $75 fee for car and driver.
Stock and Super Stock records can be set during the Test and Tune.
Time trials and qualifying are on Friday, Oct. 9. Gates open at
8 a.m. with time trials between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Comp
class qualifying is at 2:30 and 5 p.m., while Top Dragster and
Top Sportsman will have qualifying sessions at 4 and 4:30 p.m.,
respectively.
Gates open at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 with a single time trial
session beginning at 8:30 a.m. Eliminations will follow.
Top Dragster qualifying is at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., while Top
Sportsman qualifying is at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Comp qualifying is
at noon with the first two rounds of eliminations starting at 2 p.m.
Index classes – 11.50, 10.00 and 8.50 – will have qualifying
runs at noon, 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. For those unfamiliar with Index
racing, it has been described as doorslammer racing meets bracket
racing. It’s head’s up competition as both cars leave the starting line
at the same time, sprinting down the track to the finish line.
On Sunday, Oct. 11, eliminations will continue. Gates open at
8:30 a.m. and racing will resume at 9 a.m. Index classes will
resume eliminations at 10:30 a.m. and comp eliminations continue
at 11 a.m.
Spectators and crew have the choice of buying either a one-, two- or
three-day pass. Children 12-and-under are free on any day. A oneday pass is $20 for an adult and $10 for teens ages 13-15. For a
two-day pass it’s $35 for an adult and $20 for a teen ages 13-15. A
three-day pass is $55 for adults and $30 for teens ages 13-15.

KEN
STYER
BACK AT THE GROVE
etting Ken Styer to talk about himself is no easy task. But if the
conversation is about his racing career, then it becomes no problem for
Ken to speak about his love of racing. And how that love has made its way
through the generations to his grandkids.
G
For 29 years Ken raced and when asked why for so long, he said “Because I wanted
to win! I had a love of cars, and the competition got really got me going.” Ken
loved it so much that he raced four to five times per week to feed that need for
speed!
Ken started racing at the age of 16, in 1967, right here at Maple Grove Raceway.
Ken only lived two miles away from the track and for the few years before he
started racing he came down with his brother in law to watch the races.
But as they say, all good things must come to an end, so in 1996 Ken sold
everything and got out of the sport. But little did he know that he would be back
at Maple Grove almost 20 years later!
But watching wasn’t enough for Ken, so he got involved himself. At the start of
his racing career Ken raced a ’55 Chevy in the Trophy and Class Racing. He then
switched to a ’63 Chevy that he named “The Mountaineer”, running that in Street
once bracket racing started at Maple Grove.
That’s when his oldest grandson, Jake Karol, got involved in the sport. Jake is the
son of Ken’s daughter Melissa, and it was Melissa that learned about the Junior
Street program at Maple Grove Raceway.
He soon moved on to a ’67 Camaro which he also called “The Mountaineer”
running that car in the Pro Bracket. And finally he made his way to a ’74 Vega
which he ran in the Super Pro and Super Gas brackets.
Ken won some races his first number of years, but 1984 was his best year. Then
he won 7 races, one of those being a $5,000 race. He also earned the title “Most
Improved Driver for 1984” from the track.
But Ken wasn’t alone in his love of racing. His wife Yvonne joined him at the
track, even racing herself. Yvonne raced for a few years and collected some wins
herself, including the Powderpuff race of 1976. But Yvonne stopped racing soon
after because it became too tough for Ken and Yvonne to care for their daughter
Melissa during the races. In fact they had to switch her from car to car whenever
one of the pair raced, and finally it became too much so Yvonne spent her time
cheering on Ken.
“I learned about the program and asked Jake if he wanted to get involved, and he
was all for it. That’s how he got started in it in 2014,” said Melissa.
Jake started out driving Melissa’s SMART Car in 2014, winning two races. But
Jake wanted to step it up a bit for 2015, so he got his granddad Ken to let him
drive Ken’s Camaro during Junior Street competition this year.
But Jake is not the only Karol running Junior Street in 2015. His younger brother
Luke is now running the family’s ’08 Jeep in competition, even having beaten Jake
once this year.
Jake is a true competitor, just like his granddad. In fact, last year they were able to
race one another during a grudge match at Maple Grove. Jake even won!
So Ken is back now at the Grove, cheering on Jake and Luke and giving them
pointers when they need it. As Melissa said, it’s all about keeping it in the family
and spending time together that means the most to them, and being able to do it
at Maple Grove makes it that much sweeter.

THE KERSHNER FAMILY:
A TRUE RACING AFFAIR
1320 Hotline - September 2015 19
by Sarah Gingrich
A
six year old boy found himself behind the wheel of a family friend’s quarter
midget not knowing where his future would go. He could not predict that
one day he would grow up to race cars and start a family legacy. One that
expands each weekend at Maple Grove Raceway.
New Tripoli resident Bryan Kershner’s passion for racing started when he was
six after his father’s friend asked if Bryan would drive his quarter midget. Bryan
continued to race that car for a year until he received one of his own. At age 16,
he had to decide if he would continue racing ovals by moving into stock cars or if
he would change racing series. He decided to change his racing career by entering
the drag racing world. Making the adjustment from oval racing to straight racing is
usually never seen on a driver’s resume, however, Bryan did it and is proving to be a
success story.
Bryan is not an only child when it comes to racing. His brother Kevin also drag
races his rebuilt 1967 Nova. Kevin had to step away from racing for a while due to
international traveling for work. Bryan hopes his brother will be able to return to
racing at Maple Grove Raceway next year.
Bryan started dating his now wife Jennifer, a Project Manager in Regulatory Affairs
at Merck, in 1997 which was the beginning of a true racing love story. Bryan
realized the only way to get his girlfriend to become passionate about racing was
to bring her along to the track. Jennifer realized, “If he was going to be at the track
then I was going to be there too.”
Jennifer cheered for Bryan from the sidelines until the 2000 Super Chevy event at
Maple Grove Raceway. She drove Bryan’s daily driver, an Oldsmobile Intrigue, in the
6-cylinder GM class where she ended up with a runner-up finish. Bryan said “after
that run in 2000, I figured I better get her a car.” Jennifer now cheers for Bryan and
their children from her ‘72 royal blue Chevy Nova in the staging lanes. “Once I
started racing for myself, I was hooked and there was no going back,” said Jennifer.
Bryan and Jennifer have four children and as of now two are racers in Junior Dragsters.
Eleven year old Katelyn (KK) is in her third year of racing whereas her younger brother
Sean is nine years old and finishing up his first year of racing. The two youngest
children are five year old twins, Seth and Ella, who are both eager to race.
In addition to Bryan, Jennifer and the four kids, their pit box also includes Bryan’s
parents, Lynn and Rick Kershner as well as the family dog Lacy. In a four car operation,
Bryan and Jennifer agree that each family member is equally beneficial in ensuring a
smooth weekend. “The key is that we all have to work together,” states Jennifer.
Byan is in charge of maintaining the Nova along with helping Rick care for the
Camaro. Each of the kids are responsible to upkeep their cars. Then when Thursday
rolls in, the family is packing up the trailer and ready to leave Friday afternoon or
Saturday morning.
There is no true schedule the family follows when preparing for the next weekend.
However, each person understands what needs to be completed for the next
race. Jennifer said, “No one is going to be happy if we cannot get to the track, so
everyone pitches in to make sure we can pull out on time.”
Maple Grove Raceway is the family’s main track and for Jennifer she considers it
her home track. Jennifer said, “It [Maple Grove Raceway] is where I got my start
and it’s where I won my first race.” While the family has raced at other facilities they
continue to travel the hour plus to Maple Grove. Jennifer added, “When it comes
down to it, the people who race at the Grove will always keep me coming back.”
Bryan and Jennifer were asked what was their most memorable racing moment and
both agreed that watching the kids race continues to be the most special. Bryan
reminisced about the time KK won her first race at the Numidia Divisional race
and when Sean finished runner up at Bristol. Jennifer expanded on the idea by
saying’ “Every time the kids have gone rounds, I remember how I felt each and
every moment of their races.”
The administrative end of completing the tech cards and ordering the tickets is
done by Jennifer. Bryan unloads the cars and begins to prep the Nova and Camaro.
KK and Sean also prep their cars and get them ready between each round. The
twins Ella and Seth keep the family entertained while Lacy, the dog keeps the stress
level down in the motor home.
Away from the track the Kershner family continues their very active and driven
lifestyle. As a family, Jennifer and Bryan take the kids out of the house and go
running. Since the twins are still young, they cannot participate in competition
running unlike KK and Sean. The four of them enjoy entering 5K’s, 10K’s and halfmarathons. While they do not train for these events, it is a way to spend time with
the family and have fun.
Besides caring for the Camaro, Rick builds all the motors and picks up the pieces
when car issues arise. Some would call Rick the Crew Chief because he is always
there to ensure each driver and car arrive ready for the next round. He searches
for spare parts, fixes a flooded motor, charges and refuels the cars after Bryan and
Jennifer dash off to help KK and Sean. Lynn’s title would be Team Manager for the
simple fact that she keeps the family organized and well nourished. She manages
the pits, keeps an eye on the kids and makes sure the family is fed and hydrated.
In their home life Bryan and Jennifer manage their small farm that includes
chickens, horses and pigs. While each family member has their own specific hobbies
or interests besides racing, somehow everyone is so supportive of one another. KK
enjoys listening to music and Jennifer has recently began training in martial arts.
As of a few weeks ago she achieved her orange belt. Bryan enjoys fishing with the
kids and using Sean’s worms as bait. Yes that is right Sean is a Worm Farmer and a
successful one at it. He just launched his website www.weaselswigglers.com.
The Kershners race weekend preparations begin as soon as the trailer arrives in the
driveway from the previous race. The motorhome is cleaned for the next event and
on Monday each of the four cars are unloaded from the trailer. Between Bryan and
the kids, the cars are serviced and cleaned. Bryan says, “With the two Junior cars,
the Nova and Camaro, we spend at least 25 hours plus racing a week working on
these cars. It is a seven day a week operation. I try to work about three hours each
night to upkeep with the cars.”
The Kershners are the epitome of a true family run operation. Whether it is racing,
fishing or running, they do it together. “We would not have it any other way and we
really have a blast while doing it,” Jennifer said. Toward the end of a racing season
the family gets burned out and is ready for the off season. However, that feeling
only lasts a short while, until everyone including the dog are anxious to pack up the
motorhome and head for the track. Jennifer added, “Being at the track is our family
time together. If we could not do this as a family, we would not do it at all.”

L
iving, working, and
playing together. That’s
how Maple Grove’s own
Jason Leber and Anne Beegle
live their lives. Jason, Director
of Operations for the track,
and Anne, Office Manager, are
never too far apart from one
another either at home or at
work. But how did these two
racing junkies get together in
the first place?
“We had mutual friends,” said
Anne. “We didn’t know each
other, but we had some of the
same mutual friends. In the
Spring of 2011 we met through
this group. Jason was working
part time at Maple Grove at the
time, and I had a reputation for
driving fast. “Anne-dretti” they
called me. So some of my friends
thought we should meet, and once
we did we were inseparable.”
“Anne had that driving fast
reputation, so I called her out
on it,” explains Jason. “I got a
buddy of mine to bring her down
to the track one night. When
they got here I had paid for her to
get in and race her car. She said
‘I can’t do that’, but I convinced
her to try it and once she did she
was hooked.”
Before coming on full time at
Maple Grove, each had quite
separate careers. Jason was
a parts manager for a local
car dealership in Manheim,
Pa., and Anne worked at her
mother’s restaurant. Each
spent almost two decades at
those jobs before coming to the
Grove.
Jason was the first to work at
MGR, coming on in a part
time capacity in 2003. He
started in Tech and by the end
of his initial run at the track
he was a “floater”, basically
covering wherever he was
needed. Jason did that off and
on for a number of years before
he learned of the Director of
Operations position being
open. After applying to Lex
Dudas (Maple Grove General
Manager), at the end of 2013,
Jason was offered the position
in February of 2014.
JASON LEBER AND ANNE BEEGLE
LIVING, WORKING, AND PLAYING TOGETHER
It’s safe to say that Jason
working at the Grove is what
brought Anne into the fold.
After helping her mother get
the restaurant “to where it is
today,” Anne started doing part
time work at the Grove when
she would come to the track
with Jason. “I started basically
as an observer, just watching
what Jason was doing. Then I
started helping out at events, just
a few times here and there. By
then Jason was working at the
track full time, and he started
to ask me to come out and do
more work, like doing timeslips,
waivers in tech, then moving
into the tower to help with the
computer system.”
But it was those events that
really got Anne excited, and
noticed by the powers that be.
“I started out in events doing
Super Chevy, Mega Mopar, the
Diesel Nationals, then on to the
NHRA Nationals working the
hospitality tents and suites. By
then I was so enthused by the
sport that I wanted to take on a
bigger role.” Anne stated. “That’s
when Jason and I started talking
about working together, and how
that would be the coolest thing
ever, never having to be apart.”
Lex Dudas took notice of
how Anne grasped whatever
role she was involved in and
encouraged her to take on more
responsibility. “He knew I
wanted to become more involved
and that I wanted to make a
career change. When a position
became available Lex interviewed
me and within two weeks, I was
asked to come on board.”
Since coming on board Anne
has traveled to Houston Texas
to be trained by representatives
of our ticketing company,
Extreme Tix. She has done
an excellent job in handling
our guests for the nationals by
taking their ticket orders and
selecting the seats they most
desire. Other duties include
handling the weekly payroll
for the raceway staff and event
service staff and working with
all team members during the
week to aid in whatever project
needs to be completed.
Jason’s role continues to
increase not only handling
all day to day operations of
the facility, but working with
Lex Dudas in creating new
programs and redeveloping
current programs for now and
into the future. Dudas stated;
“Jason has taken an active role
in working with the index racer
program, the Money Trail racers
and continues to impress us as to
how much he wants to explore
and expand the programs at
Maple Grove.”
When we asked Lex Dudas his
thoughts on Jason and Anne,
Dudas stated “Anne and Jason
have helped bring our entire team
together, bonding with the staff
and the racers. Their upbeat
and positive attitudes about the
Maple Grove programs, the staff,
and racers spreads throughout
the facility and we’re very proud
to see how we’re all becoming a
family operation again. Having
fun is a common statement
in 2015 and we know it will
continue into the future.”
The sharing of ideas is one of
the biggest benefits of working
together at the Grove, stated
Anne. “We were always talking
about the track before, and now
that we’re both full time we really
get to help each other.”
“While we do take work
home with us, it allows us to
understand what the other is
going through that much better,
because we’re both around it all
day,” said Jason.
Anne continued the thought.
“We talk about things at home,
and then are able to act upon
them here at work. So it’s always
been a real easy conversation, and
it’s fun to have our ideas blend
together. Of course some days
it’s like ‘you just go to your office
and work and I’ll go to mine, but
there aren’t many of those days”
When asked how they have
fun, it’s clear that they even do
that together. Anne said, “We
hang out on our deck, listening to
music. Or we love to go on road
trips. And they’re not planned
road trips, they’re random road
trips. Sometimes we even throw
a dart at a map of Pennsylvania
and wherever the dart lands
is where we’re going to go. We
meet all kinds of interesting
people, and have that time all to
ourselves.”
But what about the off season?
“Snowmobiling is what we love
to do the most in the winter,”
said Jason. “We crave the snow.
Sometimes we get lost, sometimes
we fall off, but whatever happens
we always have a great time.”
And what’s the hardest part
about working together? It
was Anne who answered,
“Sometimes we don’t know what
to talk about anymore. We
sometimes have to catch ourselves
and say, ‘OK, enough work talk,
let’s talk about this’. But Maple
Grove is our life now and we
wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Neither would the hundreds of
racers who descend on Maple
Grove Raceway each year.
They’ve come to rely on Jason
and Anne to help them out,
answer their questions, and
provide a great experience at
the Grove. And with these two
here now and into the future,
things are only going to look up
at Maple Grove!

was newer than 1990. A great crowd saw
just over 200 entries participate in the
drags which were made up of six classes:
Nostalgia Bracket
Geezers (Drivers over the age of 55)
Pro Dial
The 422 All Stars
The Mid Atlantic Nostalgia Drag Racers’
Association (MANDRA)
The Back Seat Drivers
The Southern Sling Shots were also on
hand to show their stuff to the crowd.
Also performing exhibition runs were Ken
Hall in the ’32 Ford Funny Car called
Hellcat, and Mike Geroni in a ’48 Fiat
Funny Car.
Also part of the day was a nostalgia car
show with 136 entries. The top 25 cars,
as picked by the judges, each received
two free tickets to the NHRA Keystone
Nationals where they will perform a
parade lap down the drag strip and then
show during the Sunday of Nationals.

PRAY HARD RACING:
MAN BEHIND THE MISSION
Sarah Gingrich
M
any people know
Pray Hard Racing
for its multiple Jr.
Dragster entries and the famed
Big Blue Bus. But what many
do not have is the privilege to
know team owner Mark Knarr,
the man with a mission and a
passion for racing.
Pottstown resident Mark Knarr
started his racing career in a
very unique and somewhat
unconventional manner. Knarr
was a Saturday night street racer
who wanted to drive on tracks
but given the set up of his car
and the NHRA Rulebook, the
modifications were an automatic
disqualification. He no longer
has any connections with street
racing, and now spends all of
his time at the track.
His racing resume took a
complete left turn after a
family trip to Maple Grove
Raceway in 2000. Mark said,
“My son Joshua came up on
a Friday night to test, and my
other son Jacob who was 12
years old at the time saw the
Junior Dragsters race.” At that
moment Mark’s life shifted
from being a weekend racer to a
team owner. Jacob immediately
fell in love with the idea of
racing a Jr. Dragster.
However, Mark had very strong
opinions about racing Juniors.
“My feeling was lawn mowers
had no business being on the
track. I didn’t know people
spent that much money on
racing a lawn mower engine;
until I purchased my first Jr.
Dragster.” The amount of
money involved in operating
a one car team, especially for
a child or teenager was and
continues to be very costly;
which was also Mark’s main
pushback.
Jacob convinced his father
to run a Junior Dragster
organization and his other son
Joshua also wanted to race.
Which meant Mark had two
cars within the first year of
being in operation. The interest
grew within the family and
Mark’s three younger children
joined in on the racing fun.
Although Mark and wife Doris
have six children, only four of
them raced cars. Knarr says that
at the time the two oldest sons
were at the prime racing age,
there just was not enough extra
money around to provide them
with a chance to race.
When asked if he had any
other hobbies besides drag
racing, he joked; “Nope, there
is no time for anything else,
however any hobby would be
less expensive than racing.” But
in all seriousness Mark is truly
passionate about what he does.
“My kids and I drag race, that
is what we do. We do not fish
or golf, we race!”
As his own children grew up
and began to age out of the
class, each one needed a car.
This is how Mark turned his
family hobby into a chance to
make a difference in the lives
of other young racing hopefuls.
“Every time we bought a new
car for my kids, someone else
would get a seat in a car. We
kept the same cars, I have
never sold one of my cars.” In
hopes of defraying some of the
overhead costs he finds it is
financially beneficial to himself
and his driver’s families that he
run a multiple car team.
Knarr has developed a system
of operating a multi car team
that is successful even after his
own kids aged out. A system
that mentored them to become
team owners themselves. “The
evolution mentality in Juniors
is that you do it for a couple
years and then you move up.
But for me I do not have to. It
is like operating a larger remote
control car. I prep the cars,
teach the kids and watch them
go down the track. I do this
because I love it.”
The struggles of being a team
owner does not only include
finding monetary funding for
his racing operation but Mark
is also the person who fixes the
race cars. During the day Mark
works at his auto repair shop
fixing other people’s street cars.
On average Mark spends 70
hours a week just working at the
shop. That many hours at work
leaves very little time to maintain
his team’s race cars. Nonetheless
Mark tries to set aside at least
two hours working on the cars at
the end of every workday. When
there are seven cars involved,
two hours is not much time to
fix major issues. Even if he finds
extra free time, Mark helps his
children with their teams and
repairing their cars.
The difficulty lies in the
amount of equipment that is
involved, especially when the
whole family races. “We have
two buses to transport cars,
the actual race cars, trucks and
trailers. It is a lot of equipment
to maintain.” Racing is a 12
month sport, so as soon as Pray
Hard Racing shuts down at the
end of a season in November,
he immediately starts tearing
cars apart. As of August, Mark
was already preparing for the
next year.
Some might find Mark’s racing
schedule a tad chaotic but he
has it down and under control.
“At the end of the day you
know your cars. All winter is
spent going through each car
end to end, checking, cleaning
and repairing. If done properly,
summer turns into just basic
maintenance.” Be that as it may,
this summer has thrown Pray
Hard Racing for a frenzy after
blowing four engines, two of
those being back to back.
Mark is frequently asked if
there is a seat open for the
next year since one of his
drivers might be aging out.
His response is usually “yes
and no.” Yes there might be
seat opening for the next year,
however, those seats are already
filled with upcoming racers.
Knarr has established himself
as a respected and reputable
organization, which makes him
in great demand. In a sense
he must graciously turn away
the parents and racers who ask
for ride availability due to a
waiting list that is already in
place. “There is always someone
waiting for a seat” stated Mark.
Even after winning five Junior
Dragster Championships with
four drivers and one of his
female racers winning a division
race, Mark still does not have
one memorable moment in
racing. “I can’t say, I have many
good memories.” Especially
here at Maple Grove Raceway,
Mark’s home track. “This place
[Maple Grove Raceway] is full
of good memories.”
Knarr enjoys racing his team
here because of Lex Dudas
and how welcoming Lex has
been with Pray Hard Racing.
“As long as I have known Lex,
he has been very friendly to
the Juniors. He [Lex] sees the
Juniors as the future of this
sport which is very important
especially since most do not
believe the same.”
Behind the seven Junior
Dragsters and the Big Blue Bus,
Mark Knarr has an underlying
mission for his Pray Hard Racing
team. He believes in the youth
and feels as if many would
benefit from being part of a
team. “When you teach children
something in a positive direction,
you are setting them up for the
rest of their lives. If they have
something they are serious
about, whatever it is and they
endeavor it, it will be positive.”
Mark not only teaches his kids
about drag racing but also the
behind the scenes core elements
of racing like comradery and
sportsmanship. Mark Knarr
is a man with a vision to pass
on his love of racing to the
next generation, by providing
opportunities that are not
available with many others. He
recognizes that the Juniors are
the future of the NHRA and
does everything he can to help
them succeed.

T
he 2015 Rumble at the Grove ran on Saturday, August 29th at Maple Grove
Raceway in front of a great crowd. The Northeast Outlaw Pro Mods put
on an incredible show, with a new track record for Pro Mods being set by
Tommy Gray with a 5.897 ET at 241 mph during qualifying. Four other cars ran
in the mid to low 5.90s.
During the qualifying rounds 17 cars made runs. The bump being a 6.88 ET with
four cars running in the 5 second range and with 7 cars going 6.0s and under.
In Round One of eliminations, Tommy Gray fouled against Matt Deitsch, Jr.
which was a big upset. Chuck Mohn ran a 6.01 beating Steve Assenmacher. Kevin
McCurdy got a bye, and Fred Sciba beat Angela Ray-Kinson. Robert Patrick
made an easy pass against Allan Juhasz, who fouled. Steve Drummond ran a 6.18,
beating Scott Woodington (who substituted for Gary Naughton, who broke). Tyler
Hard beat jeff Rodgers, and Dean Mainis defeated Casy Stemper.
During the second round, Matt Deitsch beat Chuck Mohn. Kevin McCurdy broke
a rod in the water box, allowing Fred Sciba to get down the track unopposed. Steve
Drummond ran a 6.10 but could not hold off Robert Patrick and his 5.90. Tyler
Hard ripped off a 5.95 ET, beating Dan Marinis with a 6.05.
The semifinal featured Fred Sciba running a 5.94 which easily beat Matt Deitsch’s
12.06. Tyler Hard and Robert Patrick then lined up to face off, and it was Patrick
running a 5.91 and beating Hard, who ran a 5.92 ET.
Unfortunately, curfew came and didn’t allow for the final run between Sciba and
Patrick to take place. But the Pro Mods thrilled the fans nonetheless.
The Pro Mods weren’t the only class to make dramatic runs. The Top Dragster class
featured 15 cars running great ETs. Round One saw Kevin Robb take on Steven
Kerns and win his opening race. Bob Engelman beat Mike Yarnall and Jay Heckman
defeated Gary Sassaman. Al Moeser broke, giving the win to John Taylor, Jr. Chris
Camplone took on Pete Luciano and just got the win. It was Phil Mollichella
defeating Tom Witman, and Dillan Schindewolf won out over Dave Batchelor.
Like the Pro Mods, the Top Sportsman class was unable to run a final due to
curfew. In that final it would have been Jimmy Sugan, Jr. taking on Michael
Daniel after each racer made it through four rounds.
Index Racers made up a good portion of the day’s action, with 8.50, 10.00, and
11.50 Indexes running. In 8.50 it was Brent Beachley defeating Luis Martinez in
the final as Martinez broke and could not run the final race.
Carl Ungaro was the winner in the 10.00 Index, driving his ’67 Chevelle to the win
over Fran Bindles’ ’86 Mustang. The last Index, 11.50, saw JT Sheaffer in a ’82
Capri defeat Keith Reis Sr. and his ’68 El Camino.
Mark Santee of Center Valley, Pa. and won his class for the second week in a row
when he beat Jennifer Kershner in the Pro Dial category. Santee drove his ’68
Comet to a 10.681 ET, beating Kershcner and her ’72 Nova.
The Junior Dragster racers completed their 2015 campaign with exciting racing all
night long. In winning the final race, Matt Witkowski was able to secure the 2015
Junior Dragster championship.

opponents fouled at the start of each race. The final race was won with a perfect
.000 reaction time by Mollichela, defeating Robb and his .001 reaction time. It
was a heads up race, with both racers dialing in at 7.50. Mollichela beat Robb by

DOUBLETREE HOTEL SET TO OPEN IN NOVEMBER
Maple Grove Raceway - Mohnton, PA
DoubleTree to host Maple Grove Raceway’s Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trail banquet on February 6th
R
acers and spectators of Maple Grove Raceway will have a new venue to
stay in when the 2016 season rolls around, as the DoubleTree Hotel is
set to open its doors this November in downtown Reading. The hotel,
the brainchild of local Reading retail executive Albert Boscov, will feature 209
guest rooms, including handicap accessible rooms and one- and two-bedroom
suites. Located directly across from the Santander Arena, the DoubleTree is
being built not just as a place to house weary travelers, but as a major piece of the
revitalization of downtown Reading.
The hotel is being planned as a major convention destination within the region,
with 27,000 square feet of meeting space that includes a ballroom for seating up
to 1,000 and multiple other rooms that seat 12 and up. Craig Poole, General
Manager for the DoubleTree, said that he has hired chefs from across the country,
including the Four Seasons in Palm Beach, FL and Spago’s in Beverly Hills. So
fine dining will definitely be on the menu at the DoubleTree!
“State of the art” is a term Poole uses quite often when describing the amenities
at the 8-story DoubleTree hotel. With 42” televisions in every room, plus plenty
of outlets for charging electronics, the hotel will earn its four star rating. In fact,
there will be internet routers in every third room which will make the DoubleTree
the highest volume of high speed internet access for any hotel in the nation. Even
the coatroom is computerized!
The $63 million dollar hotel also features a fitness center and indoor pool,
walk in showers in 70% of the rooms, and a 32,000 square foot “Green” roof.
Sustainability is a big emphasis for the DoubleTree, and the roof will help in that
effort.
The hotel is being seen as a major part of the transformation of Reading. Not only
will it bring in visitors, but the hotel will offer a great number of jobs for those
in the community. “The goal is to emphasize ‘Walk to Work’ where we hire local
people and pay them a good wage,” explained Poole. “We want to get our workers
to live a healthy lifestyle, thus the cafeteria we’ll have just for them.” Poole went
on to explain that in order to turn around Reading it must start with the people.
Hiring will take place from local schools and support services, including services
that provide for homeless veterans.
That transformation continues out the doors of the hotel to the local downtown
merchants. Many have already spruced up their exteriors and interiors. “The
hotel is the vehicle to achieve bigger goals for Reading,” said Poole. “We hope to
be a model for other businesses to come into downtown and set up shop, or for
businesses already here to transform themselves. Our guests need to be able to
walk the streets and find great restaurants and shops in Reading.” Or if they prefer
a ride, the hotel will provide free shuttles to those restaurants.
The goal is to bring over 500,000 new visitors into Reading, and from that
develop over $1 million dollars in ancillary business for local restaurants and
eateries. Poole has been meeting with local restauranteurs to help them prepare
for the opening, even setting up house accounts so guests can dine at a downtown
restaurant and have the bill charged to their DoubleTree room.
Poole is amazed at the support the hotel has already garnered, without even having
a reservation system in place. So far the DoubleTree has $3 million dollars in
room reservations for next year, including rooms booked by the NHRA for the
October 2016 Nationals! In addition, $1.2 million dollars in banquets are booked
for 2016, including Maple Grove Raceway’s Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trail
banquet on February 6th. The staff at Maple Grove is excited to be working with
Poole on the banquet, as he has been a big advocate for the racetrack since his
arrival in Reading.
When asked what Maple Grove racers will see when they come in for the banquet,
Poole states “They will feel the classiness of the facility. They’ll receive four star
treatment and feel like they are at a Las Vegas resort. The banquet will be a whole
new dimension than what they are used to, with 21’ high ceilings, a world-class
sound and lighting system, and dining they just won’t believe!”
When asked why he’s a strong supporter of Maple Grove, Poole is very thoughtful
in his answer. “Maple Grove Raceway is the pride and joy of Reading, PA and
we are all so honored and thankful to have this long standing, quality and record
breaking racetrack located right here in our county and city. Not only does this
record breaking racetrack bring in the best of the best in drag racing but it also
brings in record breaking tourist dollars to our city. Because of this racetrack many
of us are able to live a better quality of life and meet the great racing fans from all
around the USA. Getting national attention because it is a fun place to go and a
fun place to be would not be possible without Maple Grove Raceway. And for that
we are committed to all the racers and the fans. “ Craig Poole realizes speed is extremely important to those that race at or visit
Maple Grove, and that’s what he aims to provide – fast service. But that service
won’t be lacking for anything. The hotel is a Hilton property, thus a certain
standard will be expected by his guests, and Poole will most certainly deliver.

KSR NIGHT
OF FIRE
The KSR Motorsports “Night of Fire and
Destruction” tore it up at Maple Grove Raceway
Sunday, September 6, 2015. Monster Trucks
