Message from our Principal
As spring approaches we will be ramping up our packing and moving - It’s an exciting time as we
prepare to move into and open our new building! You will notice that we have already removed
the art mural and stained glass from the lobby, and plans are underway for packing and storing all
we are taking with us. So, bear with us as the building becomes increasingly sparse. Rest assured
we will continue educating and involving students in great school activities.
Mr. Doug Savage
Due to the moving logistics and limited space we have made arrangements for our Walk-a-Thon
and Field Days to be held off site. Watch for permission slips, as we will handle the process much
like we do field trips. Of course, we will provide bus transportation for these events.
Mark your calendars for April 7th! We are planning for an evening “Boyd E. Smith Community
Celebration” that will include uniting current and past staff, an open house for the community,
display of memorabilia, and other special activities. The current BES building holds lots of fond
memories for generations of students and parents - be sure to join us on April 7th - 5:00 to 7:00
p.m. for a great evening of memories and reminiscing.

Autism Unit Holding Fundraising Campaign for
School Service Dog
The Autism Behavior Unit at Milford High School is a specialized
classroom serving students on the Autism Spectrum. The unit has
been approved by 4Paws for Ability in Xenia, Ohio for an autism
assistance facility dog. The dog will be trained to meet the needs of
our students with disabilities and help them achieve their goals.
"We have many tools for students of all abilities on the spectrum,
but we are adding to our toolbox," said MHS Intervention
Specialist, Trena Panko. "We believe this dog will help us when we
struggle, whether it‘s with behaviors caused by the many sensory
and other trials that are part of this condition, communication and
socialization, safety and independence, or simple comfort and
security."
An assistance dog is expensive to train and the class must raise
$15,000 for the 4Paws for Ability organization before receiving
their dog.
Mrs. Panko has set up a site for fundraising on Razoo.com so you
can donate online. Her class appreciates any donation you can
make to help them reach their goal.
"As soon as we meet our goal, we can look forward to being
matched with our service dog. Follow our progress as we prepare to
welcome our new friend from 4Paws!" Panko said.

PLEASE READ! BES Walk-a-Thon
Dear BES parents,
As part of our PTO's annual Walk-A-Thon fundraiser, our committee approaches local businesses to sponsor our
event and therefore support our school and our children’s education. Their corporate sponsorship buys
advertising on our t-shirts and in all Walk-A-Thon communications, and in turn, enables us to provide each and
every child with a Walk-A-Thon t-shirt regardless of donation amount. This year, we would like to ask you to
consider reaching out to your employer for their sponsorship or if you are a business owner, to consider a
sponsorship. If you or your employer would be interested in supporting your student and our school, either
through a corporate sponsorship or through an "employee donation match" program, please refer to our
sponsorship letter (http://bit.ly/BES_Sponsorship) which includes all the details of the various sponsorship levels.
The deadline for advertising as a sponsor is April 1. Any employee donation matching is due April 22.
As an additional incentive for you, your student will receive additional raffle tickets for a sponsorship or
employee match (5 tickets for $100 or 25 tickets for $500) therefore increasing the odds of winning raffle items.
Last year we raffled off Reds tickets, Kings Island tickets, and our top prize was a $300 gift card!
We are reaching out to our biggest and most valuable resource in the school - our parents. There are so many
companies that offer community donations and support local schools, it’s simply a matter of submitting our
sponsorship letter. Companies known to match employee donations include: Duke Energy Foundation, Fifth Third
Bank, General Electric, LexisNexis, Macy’s Foundation, Merrill Lynch, PNC Bank Foundation, Prudential
Foundation, US Bank.
The Walk-A-Thon is our PTO’s only direct fundraiser and a successful event keeps our school’s fundraising efforts
to a minimum. Annually, the PTO spends approximately $40 per student, providing programs such as COSI on
Wheels, Music Technology, Cincinnati Zoo, illustrator and author visits, combined with vital resources for our
school such as mini-grants and Chromebooks utilized for newly required State testing.
The next few years are going to bring many additional changes to our BES community. We are striving to make
this Walk-A-Thon extremely successful so we can be as prepared as possible as we embark on this new journey of
a new building and all the needs that come with this exciting, but major change. Our PTO needs your help to be
poised and ready to support our principal, teachers, and staff so that our children can have the very BESt
elementary school years possible.
Thank you for your consideration and assistance in making our Walk-A-Thon a great success!
Please contact Tricia O’Rourke 513-505-9370 or Angie Busemeyer 513-266-5356 for corporate sponsorship
questions.
