PRE-SEASON ISSUE
The CMSC 2015
trip lineup features trips to
Zermatt, Switzerland and
Whitefish, Montana
By Curtis Bell, CMSC Trip Chair
Zermatt, Switzerland
January 16 - 24, 2015
Cleveland Metro Ski Council (CMSC) is
taking over 60 people from a dozen different ski clubs. Zermatt is renowned as one
of the best ski resorts in the Alps and is
the favored place to ski by many skiers
who come here from all over the world.
The village is surrounded by 3 major ski
areas, with the world`s second biggest
lift-served vertical drop and skiing 364
days a year. You can even ski Zermatt during the summer months on the glacier.
The Swiss Ski Resort of Zermatt is one
of the larger Ski Resorts in Switzerland
and has direct access to 394km of downhill skiing, that is about 244 miles, with 59
individual pistes, served by 40 ski lifts.
The ski area is in three sections, one of
which is shared with Cervinia and
Valtournenche over the border in Italy.
Yes you can put on your skis and ski from
Switzerland to Italy without any hassle or
troubles. This is always a favorite for people who go over to Europe to ski.
I have had the pleasure of skiing in
Zermatt two other times in the past. Once
in 1995 and again in 2008, both times
were filled with great skiing and all
around fun times on and off the slopes.
This town is truly unique with no cars or
trucks, just some small electric vehicles.
This pedestrian village is great since this
is a town from mid evil times with old
building along with newer hotels and
nightclubs.
With great views of the ever-dominant,
the most beautiful mountain in the
world, the Matterhorn, you can ski at the
Rothorn paradise (3103m – 9310ft), the
Gornergrat (3089m – 9270ft), or up on the
glacier area which is the Klein Matterhorn
(3883m – 11,649ft). Snow covered trails
from November until April ensure that
you will enjoy great skiing and long, long
runs back to Zermatt - the longest being
from Klein Matterhorn at 14 kilometers
(over 8 and ½ miles) with a vertical drop
of 2'200 meters! – 6600ft. If you're looking
for off-piste skiing you'll find lots of it
here as well.
Snowboarding in Zermatt is the snowsurfer's paradise. Starting from the Klein
Matterhorn (12'550ft), you glide down the
mountain to the glacier where you'll get
to show off your prowess at a number of
snowboard parks and man-made half
pipes. Seriously cool. Or you can just
spend the day chilling out, surfing the
slopes of Zermatt before you hit the clubs
that night. You can rent your gear here
too - the best equipment is available.
The first 44 people who signed up are
staying at the Hotel Astoria which is very
nice 4 star hotel and the following 18
people are staying at the Hotel Atlanta,
which is another very nice hotel a short
10 minute walk from the Hotel Astoria.
We will have various planned get togeth-
ers in order to bringing everyone together for nice times on and off the slopes. At
this time we are working on getting more
space on this trip due to this trip’s popularity.
Optional 4 Day Extension to Malta +
1 Night In Rome, Italy Jan. 24-29
Over half of the people on this trip are
taking 4 day extension to Malta and one
night in Rome - Jan. 24-29. If your vacation time allows you to do so it is almost
too good of deal to pass up since this add
on is only $400. This includes air from
Milan to Malta and then back to Rome.
Malta, officially the Republic of Malta, is
an island country in the Mediterranean
Sea. It lies 50 miles south of Sicily, 176
miles east of Tunisia. Malta is part of the
European Union and a very safe place to
visit.

(also Feb. 8 – 15)
This is a combined trip with the
Fagowees Ski Club (FSC), Stark County
Ski Club (SCSC), and Cleveland Metro Ski
Council (CMSC). We will each have our
own group leaders and will operate as a
separate entity. A side trip to Fernie,
British Columbia for a day of skiing will
be offered for an additional price for
those interested. Fagowees, Stark County
and CMSC will offer several combined
activities such as welcome party, activities and side trip to Fernie.
The Fagowees (FSC), Stark County
(SCSC), and CMSC worked together to set
up a trip that each group is selling individually but are being run in conjunction
with each other so we can share in many
fun group get togethers. You can visit the
Fagowees Ski Club at www.fagowees.org
and Stark County Ski Club, formerly none
as Timken Ski Club at http://starkcountyskiclub.org or Cleveland Metro Ski Council

Lodge all three clubs will be at the Lodge
at Whitefish Lake. The trip includes
breakfast daily, welcome party, and 5 days
of skiing at the mountain. Plans and pricing will differ based on means of transportation to Whitefish, Montana. Choose
either plane transportation from
Cleveland Airport to Kalispell, MT. and
bus transfer to the Lodge or train transportation and shuttles to the Lodge at
Whitefish Lake. Plane travel is either
Saturday/Saturday or Sunday/Sunday,
depending on availability. Train departs
Saturday arrives Sunday and returns following Saturday with an arrival in
Cleveland early AM Monday, the 16th.
Plane trip features wading through TSA
and challenge of getting to your seat
without carry-on baggage injury, plus a
beverage. Train trip features coach to
Chicago, sleeper units to Whitefish, 7
meals and 2 night’s lodging while
onboard, plus bar/observation car opportunities.
At the Lodge at Whitefish Lake, our
accommodations will be hotel rooms, 2
people per room. Lodge @ WFL will provide free shuttles to the mountain and to
town by request. New heated outdoor
pool and hot tub will be open for our trip.
In addition, there is an on-sight; full service spa to soothe the aching muscles. Bar,
lounge and restaurant on premises are
nice amenities to soothe the aching egos.
Whitefish Mountain Resort is a ski
resort located at The Big Mountain in
northwestern Montana, located west of
Glacier National Park in the Flathead
National Forest. It is 4 miles (6 km) from
the town of Whitefish and 21 miles (34
km) north of the city of Kalispell.
The area currently has 9 chairlifts: 3
high-speed detachable quads and 6 fixed
grip (2 quads and 4 triples). There are
also three surface lifts: two T-bars and a
magic carpet. Of these, 9 lifts operate regularly, including one T-bar which is normally only open on weekends.
The mountain is separated into three
faces. The front side is primarily serviced
by the Chair One high speed quad and
has the most skiable terrain. Chair 2,
which also runs on the front side was
replaced with a high speed quad in 2007.
The front side has 7 of the mountain's 9
chairlifts. The back side of the mountain
is serviced by Chair 7, also a high speed
quad. The back side has more tree skiing
terrain, and additional terrain can be
accessed by T-Bar 2 on weekends and
during select holiday periods. The western aspect of the mountain contains the
Hell Roaring basin. Serviced by Chair 8, a
fixed grip triple chair, Hell Roaring basin
is the most advanced skiing on the mountain with cliffs, vertical chutes, and tight
tree skiing. The intermediate Hellfire trail
is the longest on the mountain; it runs 3.3
miles (5.3 km) from the summit to the
base of Chair 8.
The vertical drop of the ski area is 2,353
feet (717 m), with a summit elevation of
6,817 ft (2,078 m) and a base of 4,464 ft
(1,361 m). The average annual snowfall is
300 inches (760 cm).[2]
The ski area is about 19 miles (31 km)
north of Glacier Park International Airport
and 35 miles (56 km) south of the
Canadian border.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014
CMSC PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Are you thinking “snow” yet?
Are you thinking snow, yet? If
you’re like most people, you’re probably not!
Keep enjoying the
warm(er) weather as the snow will
be here before you know it. You can
rest assured the good volunteers for
the Cleveland Metro Ski Council and
its 25 member clubs have had a busy
summer planning many great activities to make sure you have plenty of
options to help you avoid hibernation this winter. We’ll get to those in
a bit.
First, there has been much change
this summer within the council’s
ranks. Our elections were held back
in May and we have a few new faces
on the board. Lisa Pucci of Hi Rise
took over the secretary role very late
last season, and is staying on with
us in that role this year. Lisa
Johnson of the Snowballers ended a
great term as vice president, and we
welcome Gail Vogt from Stark
County Ski Club (formerly Timken)
as our new vice president. Another
long-timer of the council leadership
team was Mike Kupiec of the
Fagowees. He stepped down after 6
consecutive years as a trustee, and
Gary Krusinski has graciously taken
on the role. Returning for another
term are Greg Schmid (Hi Rise,
treasurer), Bruce Vinicky (Fagowees,
trustee), and Kris Kunkel (Fagowees,
trustee).
I’m also sad to announce the
departure of two of our committee
chairs. After twelve years as golf
Adult Skier Profile:
Lisa “Squeaky Knees” Pucci, Hi Rise
(before that, BITOA and
before that, Timken aka Stark
County Ski Club)
Position: CMSC Secretary (Hi Rise:
Trips, Social, Newsletter, Ski Queen
and misc.)
Skis, Boots & Binding: Old, but
still moving; Nordica boots, Volkl
v20 20 with Marker bindings
Occupation: Retired from Diebold.
Looking for a new job adventure!
Hobbies: Traveling, gardening, art,
watching my 17 yr old, 6'10"
nephew play basketball!
Started Skiing: I was delayed at
being a snow bunny – not until
around 25 years old.
chairman, Joe Mazie has decided to
step down. He has been around for
every MetroCup there has been, and
with his committee, has formed a
great annual outing for the council.
The other chair we are losing this
year are Peter and Laine Keefe as
the kids’ race program. They have
also been around that program
since the start with only a few years
off in the middle when Brian and
Wendy White organized the program. Joe and the Keefes will be
missed for sure! I know they will
stay around and offer their experience generously.
The 2014-15 season is shaping up
to be a good one. Our normal “tour”
will be starting soon with open
houses, ski shows, Warren Miller
films, and lots of visits to our local
ski shops. Before we know it, we will
find ourselves on buses loaded
down with skis and boards, hearing
the starter ask “Racer Ready?”, sharing a beverage with good friends at
The Sierra or the Foggy Goggle, or
gripping our hand warmers while
the chairlift takes us against gravity.
Keep your ear to the ground and
your eyes on MeetUp, club & council
websites, and newsletters to be sure
you don’t miss out on any of the fun
we’re about to have when the mercury drops below freezing.
For now, enjoy the last few weeks
of summer. Enjoy the friends you’ve
been seeing, look forward to those
you’ll be seeing soon, and keep in
your hearts and minds those who
won’t be with us this year.
Justin Forbes, CMSC President
Career Highlight: Best (and worst) ski day of my life – on the AV Women's duals
course at KB. It was my first race after being bumped to AV. I was so excited
about the race! It was a sunny day with perfect temps. I had no aches, no pains,
no hangover, no problems. I had completely recovered from a kid-snowboarder
hitting me 14 months prior and messing up my left knee. The race was going fabulously with Wendy White ahead of me one second, and behind me the next.
Then, something went horribly wrong and I started cartwheeling off the hill and
felt incredible pain in my RIGHT knee! Drat! Had to have total knee reconstruction. I still ski, but don't race as I can't 'just go slow' on a race course.
Favorite Area: Hard to choose – probably Mistletoe at Holiday Valley (peaceful
and beautiful), Ambush at Big Sky (because of the memories!), Ponte di Legno in
Italy (with my cousins) and everywhere at Snowmass!
Metro Memories: Ski fairs and Queen competitions; the race bus trips; playing
cards at the back of the bus; Swain (the ring toss, costumes, food, beer; lots of
picnics; racers banquet; canoeing and kayaking; Hi Rise banquets and Winefests;
Dr. Bob/Heidi R/Beth S/Dan Kirby/and all helping me at KB.
I have found some lifelong wonderful friends because of Hi Rise and CMSC!

Annual Cleveland Ski Travel Show set for May 9, 2015
Now in its 19th year, this annual event brings together ski travel
experts, trip decision makers from CMSC's 25+ ski clubs and other ski
clubs & ski travel groups within driving distance of Cleveland to make
travel plans for the next ski season. Attendees take advantage of one-onone meetings with the experts, obtain information, compare ski areas,
and negotiate travel plans.
The objective of the show is to provide more time for club decision
makers (Presidents, Board Members, Trip Chairs, Current and Future Trip
Leaders), to educate themselves with Resorts and formulate their travel
plans for the next season and the future.
Last year, 30 ski and travel professionals did serious business with over
125 top ski club and ski council decision makers.
The ski areas that were represented were located in the Eastern and
Western United States and Canada, Western New York, Pennsylvania,
West Virginia and Europe, plus ski tour operators.
Saturday's format gives attendees 2 ½ hours to meet with ski area representatives and tour operators. The day concludes with a reception and
drawing for many door prizes donated by ski area representatives in
attendance.
Ski clubs, ski councils, ski travel groups, ski area representatives and
tour operators have discovered that Cleveland's Ski Travel Show is well
worth attending.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014
For the past 19 years, PRW Travel Shows has successfully
organized spring ski group events in Cleveland, Central New
Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington DC and Minneapolis.
Five years ago, PRW started organizing Fall shows in New
Jersey, Philly and Washington DC.
Each year those shows bring a large number of ski industry
representatives to the ski clubs and other ski groups so they can
conveniently shop for next year’s and future year’s ski trips.
Now, they’ve added the new Cleveland Ski & Snowboard Expo
to their fall list of events.
This year’s inaugeral Cleveland Ski & Snowboard Expo will
take place on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 6:30-10pm at
Embassy Suites, Rockside Road (where I 77 & I 480 intersect).
PRW Travel Shows and the Cleveland Ski Council will be working together to make the Event great for its first year.
The event is free to the ski club members and local skiers.
The location is easily accessible to area ski clubs and local
skiers – just the people you want to meet.
The event is a kick off to the ski season. It’s a combination
tradeshow, membership drive and social event. Tables will be
available for area ski clubs to promote their club and upcoming
ski trips.
Please plan to join us.

Is your ski club's interest in one day
trip waning, has your club been forced
to cancel trips due to lack of participants signed up to run a trip... if so
could your club benefit from fund-raising opportunities?
A couple of seasons back, the former Timken Ski Club were forced to
face the harsh reality that we could
not run all of our one day ski trips that
were scheduled due in part to many of
the obstacles that many clubs are facing. The cost of transportation has
increased greatly (the largest cost portion of any one day trip), participants
not willing to commit to trip with the
uncertainty of weather, and bus cancellation policies that make you have
to make a decision to run or cancel a
trip weeks before the scheduled
departure date.
Having seen this first hand, and running trips that would be canceled due
to lack of participants signed up in
advance, and being on trips that the
club had decided to run at a loss, only
to find out the day of departure more
participants standing in the parking lot
with check in hand to go on the trip had
got me thinking what would be the best
ways to help keep trip costs down
(encouraging better participation) and
ensuring that scheduled one day trips
would run as scheduled. We needed
money, money to help supplement
transportation costs, money for insurance that if a trip needed at least a certain number of participants to run and
we were a little off of that number that
we could still run the trip with out
breaking the clubs bank.
Standing in line prepared to purchase a super overpriced beverage at a
local concert venue the solution came
to me. These folks working at the beverage stands were all volunteers from
various organizations, the girl scouts,
the humane society, the local high
school band, etc.
Hmmmm – I wonder if and how we
could do this. Our club was an established 401c not for profit organization we had a large and diverse membership base, we have very socially
active members.
I went to work on investigating and
finding out what was needed to do to
be able to get in on the action.
After many emails, phone calls, and
even a few text messages we were on
track with Blossom Music Center and
Aaramark Beverage Services to become
non-profit volunteers working at the
music events. All volunteers must be
registered and trained by Aaramark
(TIPS Training) Training sessions are
held in early spring. Your club must be
a registered 501c organization, your
club should have liability insurance as
you are not an employee of either the
venue or Aaramark, we suffice with a
signed liability waiver from each volunteer. The club president of official must
also sign a contract with Aaramark.
A day normally starts a few hours
before the show, typical report times
are usually 1-1.5 hours before the gates
open. Volunteers must wear a uniform
consisting of black shorts, slacks, skirts,
or capri's and closed toe shoe (sneakers are fine). The venue provides the
uniform shirt and optional hat or visor.
Your leader will get your stand assignment a few days before the show
(based on number of workers committed for that show) Upon arrival the day
of event each worker gets signed in and
a wristband, a stand sheet (inventory)
SITZMARK [ PRE-SEASON ISSUE ]

Fund-raising made easy
and a show sheet with all pertinent
information. Head to the stand and
start organizing and counting all of the
stands available product and match it
to the inventory sheet.
Once verified with a supervisor get
the beers on ice! Once gates open the
masses will come to you handing you
their hard earned money for your overpriced product (yes they are a captive
audience), smile be friendly and courteous. When the show is over count
and record remaining inventory and
money collected, match funds collected with inventory sold. If you counts
and money match (with in a couple of
dollars) give a sigh of relief and go
home. The club earns a portion of the
profits from all products sold the
amount is based on the venue, and the
product sold.
Venues available through Aarmark
are Blossom Music Center, Cleveland
Browns Stadium, The Q for all Cav's
home games and concerts and events,
In talking with some of the other
groups that volunteers on a regular
basis (girl scout group) they state that
they earn enough money to send a
group of people to Europe! Couldn't
your club use a little extra money to
ensure that trips run as scheduled,
prices are kept in check, and did I mention for our volunteers for every show
they work we give a $10 coupon to be
used for club trips. This way those who
volunteer their time get a bonus keeping their trip costs even lower!

CMSC CLUB NEWS CLUB NEWS CLUB NEWS
Continental Ski Club
Erie Shore Ski Club
Esprit Ski Club
As usual, it has been a fun summer
for Continental Ski Club (CSC). Our various activities included house parties,
golf outings, a trip to Put-n-Bay,
monthly dinners, Sausage Festival at
SNPJ Farm, a trip to the West Side
Market/Market Garden Brewery, etc.
Just to give you a heads up: Our ski
racers will be holding another Pub
Crawl/Poker Run fundraiser through
downtown Willoughby sometime in the
fall. If you have ever attended this
event, you know it's a lot of fun! If you
have not, please come out and join us!
(Contact Michael Neibecker at 440-5377127 for more info.)
Our annual Steak/Clambake will be
held on Saturday, October 4th at the
Chestnut Shelter in the Cleveland
Metroparks. CSC is coordinating a trip
on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic
Railroad in October, followed by dinner
at a nearby restaurant. Also, we usually
have a party or two during the holiday
season.
In addition to a ski club, we are also
a social club and enjoy having fun
whatever we do! We meet on the eastside of Cleveland, and our membership
includes singles, couples, and families.
Try to attend one of our meetings to
find out more about us.
Our meetings are currently held at
Brindaliers Bar and Grill on SOM
Center Road in Willoughby Hills on the
second and fourth Thursdays of each
month beginning around 8:00 pm. For
further information about CONTINENTAL SKI CLUB, contact Harvey Hutter,
our President, at 440-796-3795.
Erie Shore Ski Club was founded 50
years ago to encourage the sport of skiing and enjoy the fun and friendship
which accompany a good day of skiing
with friends.
We celebrated our 50th anniversary
with a party, a lovely cake and had
guest speaker Justin Forbes, President
of Cleveland Metro Ski Council join us,
with his lovely wife, Stephanie. Also
present was a founding member, Gene
Walker, who is still a member, still
comes to all the meetings and still skis
beautifully.
We have trips to the western United
States (this year to Telluride, CO, Jan.
9-15, 2015) and many one and two day
trips to NY and PA.
As we did last year, we are teaming
up with our good friends at Village Ski
and Board to make the trips more
enjoyable. Want to race? We have a
great bunch of racers who demonstrate
their expertise with the Cleveland
Metro race program.
The club welcomes all – Type of
group: single, couples, families, new
skiers and expert skiers. We have afterwork parties, speakers at our meetings
and a yearly Soup Cook-Off.
Our monthly meetings are on the
2nd Thursday of the month, Sept., then
Dec. to March, at 7:00pm at Lenau
Park, the German-American club on
Columbia Rd. in Olmsted Falls.

While most of us were trying to hold
on to every drop of our unseasonably
cooler summer, the skiers from Esprit’s,
See You At The Top youth group were
willing Old Man Winter to return to the
slopes. As part of their summer time
activities, a group of nearly 20 hit the
towpath for a Bike-Aboard, Cuyahoga
Valley Scenic Railroad outing. Some
riders were seasoned vets but for many,
it was a first-time adventure. It was a
beautiful sunny day buzzing with plenty of activity at the Trail-Mix in
Peninsula. One of the highlights was
catching the grass-covered abandoned
slopes at Boston Mills Ski Resort. Tiger
& Croyle was beckoning the group to
stop, drop, & roll down! Unfortunately,
as for the wildlife, the sightings were
low but that was quickly made up by a
watching a lock demonstration at the
Canal Exploration Center. After a
hearty lunch stop, the group ran in to
John Malvin, (in character of course) a
free African-American who shared his
experiences as a canal boat captain
from the Canal era.
We are having 2 fabulous events
coming up!
First, we'll need everyone to register

Good Times Ski Club
NASA Lewis March 2014 Park City trip was “Great!”
We arrived Saturday at the Yarrow Hotel early enough for everyone to settle in,
shop a little, even rent skis for the week. By the evening everyone was at the welcome party enjoying drinks, pizza, veggies, satay chicken and Swedish meatballs.
There was a small snag arriving in SLC when some people did not receive their
luggage but everything was delivered by the evening and everyone was able to
enjoy their first day on the slopes.
Sunday morning, after our included breakfast, we were off for our first day of
skiing at Park City Mountain Resort. Probably our warmest day of the week, which
meant each ski day only got better!
Weather was mostly sunny and warm at the base. The top of the mountains
were quite a bit cooler and made for excellent days.
We saw a bit of a storm on Tuesday, adding a few additional inches of powdery
snow to all the resorts.
Although we only planned one day for Deer Valley, several people liked it so
much that they went multiple times by trading lift tickets or buying additional day
passes. Tom, our fearless leader, traded his Deer Valley pass for another day of
snowboarding at the Canyons. His awesome new snowboard was too precious to
give up for even one day, especially with fresh power on the ground! It gave me
another day to enjoy a second bowl of Deer Valley chili!
One couple even spent their last day at Brighton, really adding to the variety of
their week.
As always, each night we had many people getting together for dinner. We
enjoyed a variety of different cuisines, great conversation and great company.
A great thing about Park City is the variety of things to do. Museums, movies,
Olympic Park (from 2002 Winter Olympics), dog sledding, snowmobiling and
much more. Downtown Main Street is lined with quaint old mining town-era
buildings now housing many shops, restaurants and galleries. The Park City
Resort Town chairlift will take you right down to Main Street for a nice lunch and
right back up for more great skiing. And SLC is a short ride away.
We did have some injuries during the week and hope that everyone (Cathy,
Golina, Erica, Paul) recovers quickly and completely.
Cindy and Dianna were so lovely on the flight home that the pilot requested
they be moved to some open seats in first class. So fitting for two of our first class
ladies!
Safe flights, great weather, great skiing, great food, great company, great memories. And, of course, great hot tub. In a word – Great!
Good Times Ski Club is Cleveland
Metro Ski Council’s most informal club,
with the single purpose of offering midweek ski trips every Wednesday January
through March. We enthusiastically
invite all CMSC members to join us. By
skiing/riding on Wednesday you will
enjoy:
• Freshly fallen snow and groomed
slopes that never get skied off.
• A maximum number of runs each
day with absolutely NO LIFT LINES – a
phenomenon we call “No-Wait
Wednesdays.”
• Comfortable coach transportation to
and from the slopes and a ski pass for
the cost of a single weekend lift ticket.
• The chance to attend a trip solo and
meet up with other skiers for a funfilled day on the slopes.
• The opportunity to hit the slopes
every week all season long, as our
trips eliminate the expense of an
overnight stay.
• A mini vacation from work to enjoy
nature’s winter wonderland.
• Reduced membership cost of $10 for
all first-time members.

fun? See our trips listed in the

was had by all.

Hi Rise team reclaims “The Cup”
at the 13th Annual CMSC Metro Cup
golf tournament
SITZMARK [ PRE-SEASON ISSUE ]
|
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014
The 13th Annual CMSC Metro Cup
golf tournament at Punderson State
Park was attended by six clubs.
Continental, Hi Rise, and Fagowees
fielded full teams. Warren, Beaver
Valley and Snowballers entered partial
teams.
All golfers received a goodie bag at
registration containing CMSC log golf
tees, a ball marker from St. Andrews,
discount coupons from Golf Galaxy and
Golfsmith, an energy bar, and lunch
and beverage tickets. The traditional
group picture was taken after registration and before the 1:00 PM shotgun
start.
Golfers competed in five events to
vie for a chance to win the Metro Cup
and various skill shots: Men’s Medal,
Women’s Medal, 2-Person Best Ball, 2Person Co-ed Scramble, and 4-Person
Scramble. Guy Nerren of Hi Rise tallied
the scorecards in great secrecy to
determine the winner of each event
and the winner of the Metro Cup.
Golf was followed by the annual tapping of the key on the deck at
Punderson Manor. A chicken and rib
dinner in The Maple Room set the
stage for the 50/50 raffle and door prize
drawing. The big winners were Patty
Cooper of Continental, winner of golf
and lodging for two at Holiday Valley,
and Rob Gibson of Fagowees, winner of
golf and lodging for two at Peek ‘N
Peak. Over 60 prizes and awards were
handed out, including rounds of golf,
ski shop and restaurant gift certificates,
Indians tickets, and other miscellaneous items.
Skill shot and event winners were
announced next. The five event winners
were Men’s Medalist Rick Smelko of Hi
Rise,
Women’s
Medalist
Beb
Stambaugh of Fagowees, 2-Person Best
Ball team of John Seidel and Andy
Cratcha of Continental, 2-Person Co-ed
Scramble team of Dan Ledasil and
Ingrid D’Ambrosio of Continental, and
4-Peron Scramble team of Bob
Maclauchlan, Bill Starr, Pat Melia and
Harry West of Hi Rise.
And, finally, it was announced that
Hi Rise recaptured “The Cup” with 88
points! Continental placed second
with 76 points, and Fagowees placed
third with 73 points. It was a spirited
competition and a great time.
Complete event results, winners of

about our club by checking out our

Stark County Ski Club
We’re still in the process of all the
name change over items with the tax
filing, and all the other government
forms we deal with. Our new web site
is up and running starkcountyskiclub.org, and we are also in the
process of developing a new logo to
go with the new name. We are just
thankful that we have a skilled group
of members to see this process
through correctly.
We have a new club president – Jim
Kovach – skiing and being involved
with the club is nothing new to Jim.
He has been a past VP, trip committee, and he is always in there to help
develop something new for the club –
by the way we get the resort or try a
new one. Our VP is Candice Ford, she
has been a member for a few years,
and brings a lot of new ideas for the
club’s future. Donna Brancifort and
Jennifer Stephan remained in their
respective positions as treasure and
secretary – they do a fantastic job for
us.
The club trips are laid out for the
ski season, and the trip committee
spent lots of hours trying to pack the
these into our short ski season. We
have our return trips to Holiday
Valley, HoliMont, and Peak N Peak for
one day trips, our favorite 2 ½ day trip
to Holiday Valley – HoliMont – staying downtown Ellicottville. We opted
for a few more weekend trips this season, by request from our members –
all of them being overnight trips. Of
course the travel by train is happening on two of the trips, and possibly a
3rd – if enough interest is given. Want
to do a mid December trip to Stow, VT
– group would leave the Cleveland
Amtrak station early Thursday, Dec 11
and return early morning, Monday
Dec 15th. Price is depending on the
number of people – right now it is
$619 for 40 people or 675 for 30 people, skiing Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday. The big trips are to Whitefish
with CMSC – by plane or train (few
seats left for the train), and then Mt
Snow-Okemo by train in late
February. There is limited number of
seats for the train on this one – contact
Zee
Kovach
at
–
[email protected].
The summer months have been
taken up with biking trips on the sections of the towpath each week. We
have had several gatherings at some
of our local wineries, and a lot of our
member’s time has been taken up
with the Blossom concerts – working
as volunteers serving beverages to
the concert goers. The hard work will
pay off this ski season with no cancelled one day trips, and trips that
need a supplement to break even –
will get if from the funds earned this
summer. A few of our members opted
for some surgeries early summer and
are on the mend – key is to back on
the slopes for 2015 or before.
Suburban Ski Club
Suburban Ski Club is a friendly
group of skiers with lots of opportunities to ski (11 trips totaling 26 days
this year). We ski every week during
the winter months. Our convenient
meeting location, Alfredo’s at the
Holiday Inn just off Wilson Mills Road
at I-271, draws members from all
parts of the Cleveland area.
We are planning three major trips
this year: The first will be to Park City
from January 3-10. Ski-in/ski-out lodging will be in two-bedroom condos
with fully equipped kitchens, and
access to indoor and outdoor hot
tubs. The price includes three days of
skiing at Park City resort, one day at
Deer Valley, and one day at The
Canyons. An optional sixth ski day is
available.
The second trip will be to Telluride,
January 31-February 7. Lodging will
be at the Bear Creek Lodge, which
features ski-in/ski-out with a semiprivate lift, fully equipped kitchen,
and access to an indoor pool, hot tub,
and exercise room.
Our eastern trip will again be to
Attitash, NH from March 8 to 14. This
year we are adding two days at
Sunday River, about an hour away in
Maine. Like our other recent trips to
New England, this will be a bargainpriced, all-inclusive package with bus
transportation, lodging at the ski
in/ski out Grand Summit Resort, 5
days of skiing/snowboarding, daily
buffet breakfasts, and dinners. In
addition to Attitash/Bear Mountain
and Sunday River, we will take a side
trip to sister resort Wildcat Mountain.
In addition, we will have several
one-day trips to Holiday Valley, Seven
Springs, Peak’n Peak, Kissing Bridge,
and Holimont. Our goal is to give
people as many opportunities to ski
as possible. Indeed, our motto is “We
Ski Every Week.” Combined with
group lift-ticket discounts, bus trips
are by far the most economical way to
ski. Several of our trips are on
Sundays or holidays to accommodate
those with less-flexible work schedules. This year we are again offering
an overnight mid-week trip, allowing
skiing at both Holiday Valley and
Bristol. As has been our policy for
several years, any member of a CMSC
ski club can go on our trips at the
member price.
Dues are just $15 per person, and
first-time members get a special price
of only $10. Everyone going on our
trips must be a member of Suburban
or another CMSC club.
Our meetings are typically on the
second Thursday of the month from
September through March (except
December), starting at 7:00 p.m. We
also have one or more other social
activities each month, including a
monthly Eat-Around-Town where we
explore the offerings of various local
restaurants. Guests are always welcome.
For more information about
Suburban Ski Club, contact Beth
Silverman at (440) 247-1825, or email
[email protected]. A complete listing of upcoming events, trip
flyers, membership applications, and
more can be found on our website,

The Warren Ski Club

club founded in 1956. The Warren Ski
Club features weekend ski trips and
one-day ski trips, as well as weeklong
ski trips to Western and European ski
resorts with optional add on excursion trips to non-skiing European
cities. The Warren Ski Club also runs
non-ski trips to warm weather destinations. Other social events that the
WSC enjoys throughout the year.
The Warren Ski Club has been skiing the world for 57 years. This winter
will be no different. We will be going
to:
Steamboat, Colorado January
17–24, 2015. We will be staying at the
La Casa Condominiums located
about 150 yards to the slopes above
the Gondola. You will have a chose of

laundry rooms with full size washer &
dryers, and complimentary WIFI
access. La Casa also features free
on-site ski lockers, 2 outdoor hot
tubs, and shuttle service to shopping,
the ski area and dining. During our
stay, Steamboat Ski Resort will be

Steamboat. We are booked on
Southwest Airlines - Cleveland to
Denver (“Bags Fly Free”). Trip Costs:

Aspen, Colorado March 7–14, 2015.
The town of Aspen is like no other
American ski resorts. Aspen has 4 ski
resorts to choose from: Aspen
Mountain,
Aspen
Highlands,
Buttermilk, & Snowmass all on one
multi-day lift ticket. We will be staying at The Gant; one of Aspen’s highest rated properties and is located in
the town of Aspen about 3 blocks
from the base of Aspen Mountain
(Ajax) and downtown. The Gant condos are 2-bedroom/2-bath units
with full
kitchens, comfy living rooms with
wood
burning
fireplaces,
balcony/patio, & in-room safes. The
Gant’s amenities include 3 outdoor
hot tubs, a heated outdoor pool, a
sauna, and an exercise room. The
Gant’s shuttles are great for getting
around Aspen. The shuttles can take
you to the Aspen Mt. base area or the
transportation center to get to the
other ski areas. If you wish to go the
grocery or liquor store they will take
you, if you’re going out to dinner or
maybe a club, they will take you and
bring you back. We are scheduled to
fly from Cleveland to Denver. Trip
Costs:

Youngstown Ski Club
Fun, adventure, and wonderful
camaraderie develop and occur here!
This Summer has offered bar crawls,
wine tasting tours, bicycling events,
Pub of the Month's, and various
social gatherings. It is always enjoyable making memories and sharing in
activities among both current and
newly discovered friends! As we prepare for football season, it is also the
time to think about Winter, skiing,
and related events. The Youngstown
Ski Club promotes an open-minded
philosophy of cooperation, and we
encourage participation from meetups, social groups, and other ski
clubs from all over Northeast Ohio
and Western Pennsylvania!
Through an atmosphere of enthusiasm, ongoing social events include
our popular "Pub of the Month" which
is a social gathering of multiple
groups, occurring every fourth
Tuesday at classy local taverns. Join
an average of 50-80 people who view
upcoming activities, share delicious
hors d'oeuvres, and good conversation. Also, occurring through the
month of September, is the "Cycle
Circle", a weekly biking excursion followed by a short social gathering at a
local bar, comprised of Club
Members, affiliates, guests, and other
ski clubs. Cooperative weather has
allowed for good participation as they
offer a unique blend of companionship, conversation, and even competition on the rides! Please visit the
website and/or our Face Book Page
for more details on the times and
locations of these ongoing activities...
As we make the transition from
Summer to Fall and Winter events,
our enthusiastic Trip Managers have
diligently worked to provide some fun
adventures and trips. While some
events remain in planning during this
editorial, all completed events and
trips are displayed online, and are
updated weekly. For the remainder of
2014, we are still finalizing the details
of an "End of Summer Party" offering
sporting activities, food, and drinks.
Next, we first have our "Fall Winery
Tour" set for October 11th. This is a
round trip bus package offering
tastes, lunch, and tours. The month
of October finishes up with a
"Halloween Party" yet to be determined. November brings the start of
many "Ski Shows" by local retailers
that offer fun, games, and discounts
from regional ski resorts! Visit our
table during these events for chances
to win prizes and obtain Club information. On Friday, November 14th,
we encourage everyone reading this
to attend our "Annual Wine Taste &
Dinner Dance", an outstanding
evening of drinks, dinner, dancing,
and raffle prizes! December offers
additional Ski Shows with discounts
on winter apparel and equipment.
There is even discussion about a
"Christmas Party", but the details are
not available at this time...
Day Ski Trips for 2015 may include
Peek'n Peak NY, Holimont NY,
Holiday Valley NY, and Kissing
Bridge, NY., and/or Blue Knob, NY.
Weekend Ski Trips may include
Holiday Valley NY, Bristol Mountain
NY, and a Lake Placid/Whiteface, NY
trip. Details of ski trips were not available at time of this article.
Additionally, because we belong to
two Ski Councils, offerings to Western
U.S. and European locations are also
displayed and promoted on our website. Cruise and Travel opportunities
in 2015 from our Tour Operator and
Assistant Trip Manager include a
Mardi Gras Cruise, China Tour, and
Scandinavian Cruise! With an affordable membership price and the
unique kind of fun and acceptance
not discovered anywhere else, how
can anyone miss these fantastic
opportunities?
The Youngstown Ski Club is comprised of enthusiastic and fun-loving
people who seek like-minded individuals. We hope to build upon past
relationships, and welcome new
groups and friends to discover our
social network. Club meetings are
held on the second Monday each
month, and additional information
and updates are found at
