Y NEWS www.WaynesboroYMCA.com | 5 Volunteer Spotlight: Dawn Pryor GIVING BACK Pryor family dedicated to Y hoops program future John Spears is in the gym at the Waynesboro YMCA at 7:15 am on Saturdays during basketball season, and not far behind him is a lady who has been running the concessions tables for the past 22 years. “It makes for a long day a lot of days,” said Dawn Pryor, who first volunteered to run concessions for Y basketball when her daughter, Natasha, now 33, signed up for youth basketball in 1994. Now Natasha works with her mother running one of the two tables – one upstairs, one downstairs – most weekends. And Pryor’s four grandchildren - Shyhiem Washington, Kian Tate, Zaire Tate and Jasiah White – volunteer their time with Y basketball themselves. When the young men aren’t playing, they’re coaching, refereeing, running the scorer’s table, or helping out with concessions. “I want them to understand that you don’t always have to get paid for the things that you do, and when you give back to the community, it will come back to you,” said Pryor, who can’t imagine not being in the thick of it all, despite the long days. “It can get rough at times. I’m in here at 7:30 in the morning on Saturdays, and the games might not be over until 4, 4:30. But I really enjoy it,” Pryor said. Spears can’t imagine not having Pryor to lean on, either. “It takes so much pressure off me having somebody over there that I can trust, and is in complete control of that area. She does a great job, and I don’t have to worry about anything,” said Spears, the youth sports director at the YMCA. “People don’t have any idea how hard that job is, but I just get out of the way. She’s unbelievable how she keeps this operation going.” And it goes to a good cause. Money generated by concessions goes to pay for new basketballs and other equipment for the Y hoops program. Volunteer at the Y - Lead our boards of directors and committees - Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of the community - Coach our sports teams and teach many of our classes - Extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier - Advocate for the Y’s efforts to influence policies and initiatives that positively impact societal issues of importance to the community - Participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors - Help our office/front desk staff and help maintain the inside and outside of our building. There are many opportunities at the Waynesboro Y. Please stop by and fill out a volunteer form and help us to continue to help our community. “That’s where this pays off, and it’s a wonderful feeling knowing that I can help the Y by doing this,” Pryor said. And she gets to see her grandchildren grow into good young men at the same time. “The peer pressure for youths today is so hard. There are so many temptations out there. But seeing them giving back the way they are, I know if something would happen to me today, at least I know that they were raised up to be pure gentlemen. That was my goal, for them to know to be able to give back. The reward will come to you. And it’s come to me,” Pryor said. FITNESS www.WaynesboroYMCA.com | 6 New personal trainer brings diverse background to Y Trish LaGrua, the newest personal trainer at the Waynesboro YMCA, came to the fitness world from the unlikeliest of directions. FITNESS www.WaynesboroYMCA.com | 7 PiYo delivers fat-burning, low-impact workout You don’t have to jump, grunt, strain and punish your body with the newest fitness class at the Waynesboro YMCA, PiYo. “PiYo combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility advantages of yoga,” said Kari Davis, the group fitness director at the Y. PiYo cranks up the speed to deliver a true fatburning, low-impact workout that leaves your body looking long, lean, and incredibly defined. “It isn’t like standard Pilates and yoga classes that make you hold long, intense poses, or lead you through dozens of repetitive, microscopic core movements,” said Davis, explaining that PiYo speeds everything up — including your results — by introducing you to dynamic, flowing sequences that can burn serious calories at the same time as they lengthen and tone your muscles and increase your flexibility. “With every action-packed PiYo session, you can burn excess fat and sculpt and define your whole NEXT PAGE >> body, as you minimize the aches and pains that can come along with high-impact workouts,” Davis said. SMAC SWIMMING www.WaynesboroYMCA.com | 14 Weaber family succeeding in Y swim program If you’re in the building at the Waynesboro YMCA, odds are that there’s a Weaber in there with you. “We are at the Y quite a bit. We’re probably there eight to ten times a week just with swimming, which probably equates to 10-plus hours a week total,” said Jonathan Weaber, who with his wife Lisa takes turns toting their children – Anna, 10, Aiden, 8, Anderson, 6, and Alex, 4, to swim practices and lessons at the Y. Anna and Aiden are members of the Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club swim team. Anderson swims with the summer league Marlins team, and Alex has taken swim lessons. The Weabers moved to Waynesboro three years ago, and among their first contacts was the Y and the SMAC swim program. “SMAC and the Y are our most solid communities as a family. They’re the networks that we’ve been closest with, so it’s meant a lot to us being new to the area,” Weaber said. As a parent, seeing his children grow and improve in swimming, a sport that requires self-discipline, has been a bonus. “It’s been great for the kids to have that kind of influence in their lives, especially for our older two being involved in year-round SMAC,” Weaber said. “It’s great seeing them excel, seeing them work hard, set goals. Swimming is an individual sport in a lot of ways. Watching them grow and mature, setting goals, working hard, doing hours in the pool at 10 years old, in a very supportive environment, has been great.” Commonwealth Games Photos Contact: Scott Thacker Head Coach (434) 444-8084 [email protected] www.smacswimming.org GIVING TO THE Y Support the Waynesboro Y Foundation Leave a legacy and join the Heritage Club today. CHILDCARE www.WaynesboroYMCA.com | 17 Y Childcare kids build computers Aside from soaking in the sun and participating in fun activities this summer, Group C has been building computers to use at the Y. Every Wednesday for an hour, the pre-teens build these complex machines. Community effort revives playground It started with the need for a new fence. Eventually, the Waynesboro YMCA playground got a facelift. “We went to the opening, and it was great to watch them enjoy the new playground. It was nice. It came out great. To see their happy faces, it means a lot,” said Patty Rouse, who with her husband, Bob, donated money for the new fencing, and for an addition, a five-car train set. Childcare director Rebecca Patton came across the train set while doing some research on playgrounds and circled it as being part of a wish list for the playground. “The Rouses are very generous when it comes to covering scholarships for families that can’t afford programming,” said Jeff Fife, the executive director of the YMCA. “When I approached them about upgrading the playground - they really stepped up.” Fife had already asked the Rouses to provide the funding for the new fencing, which had been mentioned as a priority in a licensing review. “My wife and I are interested in things that benefit the youth,” Bob Rouse said. “We got a call from Jeff that this playground equipment was available, and we elected to go ahead and buy it. We had already agreed to put up the fence surrounding the playground and some general improvements there. This was just a nice addition to what was already being done.” Work on the project began in March with the removal of the old fencing by childcare staff. A group of cadets from Fishburne Military School volunteered in shoveling a trench for a new border to be placed for the new fencing, and the SMAC swim team pitched in, spreading the more than 10 tons of gravel to serve as the base for the playground. The Augusta Home Builders Association donated a playhouse, and volunteers built and planted new gardens and removed a dead tree from the center of the play area. The new playground was dedicated on June 9, and it was an instant hit. “The children have enjoyed the playground every day,” said Patton. “We have been able to eat lunch out there and have multiple trips per day. The generosity of the Rouses, the hard work of our playground maintenance team and the swim team made it all come together perfectly. If you haven’t had the opportunity to stop by and check things out, be sure to ride by.” “It’s a lot of fun!” exclaimed one child, Alex. “We get to learn stuff and build stuff!” he said. These computers, funded by a grant from Dominion, will be used in childcare for homework and to learn about various educational topics. Along with having fun while building the computers, the children also learn an extensive amount of knowledge about building computers and computer terminology. When asked what his favorite part was during the computer building experience, one child named Julia said, “I like to learn new stuff about computers. Putting the motherboard in was probably my favorite part because it was complicated and I enjoy being challenged.” The students presented their computers and talked about their experiences on August 3.
