History & Heritage
Spanish explorers landed on these shores in the 1500s. Union
and Confederate troops fought over them during the Civil
War. Pirates, including Blackbeard, controlled these waters in
times passed. Today, their footprints still remain on the sands
and in the waters everywhere you look.
Cannon fire still echoes on the ramparts and
throughout Fort Macon, a restored fortress that fell to
Union forces during the Civil War. Now a 398-acre
S hackleford Banks, an island just off the coast, is home to a herd of wild horses
state park and museum, the Fort brings history alive
with reenactments and daily tours of the grounds.
All across the area, the heart of the past still
descended from Spanish horses that swam ashore hundreds of years ago. With the
lighthouse in the background, they roam the island, giving visitors a window to the past.

the perfect way to enjoy the ocean on land: the North Carolina Aquarium at
Pine Knoll Shores. Through acres of exhibits, families come face to face with
sharks, sea turtles and other dwellers of the deep, some of which swim through
a replica of Blackbeard’s sunken pirate ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge.

of song and dance. There are a number of movie theatres across the region,

Beaufort for an unforgettable “ghost walk,” a tour of historic haunts sure to
