Abigayle Bradford had to act quickly when her classmate needed her help. The Upland High
School sophomore and Baldy View ROP Medical Assistant course alum was beside the pool
when she noticed another student was in trouble. She then dove into the water to rescue
him and saw that he had become unconscious. She pulled him up out of the water but could
hear something was not right. She checked for and confirmed that water was in his lungs.
Next, she laid him on his side and induced vomiting to loosen the water in his chest. She was
going to administer CPR, but the boy regained consciousness thanks to her response.
“It didn’t hit me what actually happened until the next day,” Abigayle said, recalling her
life-saving act. “I’m excited that I knew what I needed to do. It felt like second-nature.”
Medical Assistant Instructor Marie Sliney shared her pride in her former student’s abilities.
“I am extremely proud of Abigayle! She not only learned important life saving skills but has
put them into practice. That’s something she can be proud of her entire life. Great job,
Abigayle!”
Abigayle is also a member of the water polo team at Upland High School and credits the
sport for training her to be able to pull the boy from the pool. “I used my water polo skills to
dive in and pull him up and my ROP skills to help him regain consciousness,” she said.
While her high school career is not even halfway over, Abigayle knows exactly what she
wants to do when she graduates. She wants to join the Air Force where she eventually
wants to serve as a nurse. Her career aspirations motivated her to enroll in the Medical
Assistant course.
“It was a good class to take. I’ve learned all kinds of medical vocabulary and skills that will
help me in my career choice,” she said. She added that her favorite part of the class is the
hands-on curriculum.
While it is everyone’s preference that the skills Abigayle and her classmates learn in courses
like Medical Assistant never have to be used, her ability to save a life is a testament to the
value and impact that learning those skills has. Well done Abigayle and Instructor Sliney!

There was an air conditioning unit that was not working properly in Instructor Lorraine Avalos’ Baldy View ROP Floriculture and
Floral Design course at Chaffey High School. Baldy View ROP HVAC Instructor Reyes Vazquez’ students were able to repair the
unit. The refrigerator in Instructor Avalos’ classroom had not been working for some time. Instructor Vazquez noticed the faulty
appliance when he visited her classroom and asked if he could have his students repair it for extra credit as it would be a good
learning experience for them.
The students took the unit to the lab where they checked the major components such as the compressor, condenser, and
evaporator motors for electrical abnormalities against the factory specifications. Next, they checked the sequence of operation
and discovered the temperature controller was out of range
and not meeting the temperature set point. The students
replaced the temperature controller and the unit was then
able to maintain the 40 degree set point it needed to operate.
“The students were very happy to see the unit function
normally after they installed the temperature controller. They
were clapping and giving each other high-fives” Instructor
Vazquez shared. “It’s gratifying because now the floral
arrangements will be able to be preserved for a longer period
of time.”
Instructor Reyes Vazquez, Chaffey High School senior Omar Vasquez, Chaffey High
School junior Jorge Medina, Chaffey High School senior Louis Montes, Chaffey High
School senior Nick Trujillo, Chaffey High School senior David Flores, adult student
Sergio Herman, and Chaffey High School junior Maria Nunez.
“The refrigerator was completely unable to function and these
students did such a fabulous job!” Instructor Avalos shared.
“They should be very proud of themselves and it will really
help our class.”
Thank you to Instructor Avalos and Instructor Vazquez for
sharing this story!
Seth Leroy working on an assignment in the
Network Security+ course
Alta Loma senior and Baldy View ROP alum, Seth Leroy, won our first Share Your Story Contest! Seth took the
Network Security+ course with Instructor Maher Tawfik at the Career Training Center. Seth then shared his story
online at www.baldyviewrop.com/shareyourstory and was selected through a drawing as the winner of two tickets
to the Titanic Exhibit at Buena Park.
As part of his story, Seth shared, “I would recommend taking an ROP course to another student to simply learn more
about what you want to do and get an actual feel about the future after high school. ROP is a great environment for
learning and gives you an advantage towards majoring in subjects at college.”
Seth shared that he would like to attend a four-year college after he graduates high school where he will study either
microbiology or cyber security.

Darlene Garcia is a junior at Los Osos High School and took the Baldy View ROP Sports
Medicine course with Instructor Elizabeth McGraw. In the course, Darlene interned at
Bellwood Chiropractic in Rancho Cucamonga through the course’s Community
Classroom component. After completing the course, Darlene was hired to continue
working at Bellwood Chiropractic.
“My experience working at Bellwood as a student was wonderful,” Darlene said. “Ms.
McGraw is a wonderful teacher, I learned a so much, and made many friends through
the program. My current supervisors, Dr. Diane and Leslie Walt Bellwood, were so open
to having me work with them during my class and are so supportive of me now.”
In her current position, Darlene works the front desk where she schedules appointments and helps patients in
a variety of ways. She shows patients to their rooms and asks them preliminary questions about their physical
condition. She attributes her Sports Medicine course with teaching her how to identify various types of
injuries. She enjoys her work as it allows her to help people, which she is passionate about doing.
Once she graduates from high school, Darlene wants to attend college and study to become a registered nurse
specializing in the pediatric department.
Instructor McGraw teaches the Baldy View ROP Sports Medicine course at Chino Hills High School where
students regularly have the opportunity to intern at various clinics and medical facilities as a Community
Classroom. This allows the students the opportunity to get hands-on experience that reinforces what they
learn in the classroom as well as receive valuable on-the-job training that prepares them for entry-level
employment. The course also meets the “g/Elective” criteria for UC a-g requirements and has an articulation agreement
with Mt. San Antonio College.
A+ Computer Repair
ALUMNI CONTINUING THEIR EDUCATION
Instructor Maher Tawfik’s Baldy View ROP A+ Computer Repair course at the Career Training Center prepares students for
work at an Information Technology (I.T.) helpdesk or in a computer repair shop. Students learn about various computer
hardware parts from the inside out as they take computers apart and put them back together again. Students also learn about
basic troubleshooting, virus protection, and are introduced to working on other equipment such as laptops, mobile phones,
and printers. Students are prepared to earn their CompTIA certification and the course also has an articulation agreement with
Chaffey College and Mt. San Antonio College.
Josh Mendez took the course while he was at Don Lugo High School and is currently assisting with the I.T. helpdesk
responsibilities at Baldy View ROP. Josh has previously worked for his church in I.T. and network administration. Josh credits
his Baldy View ROP course with having introduced him to the technology field.
“ROP gives students a chance to focus on an industry that interests them and get hands-on experience to explore if it’s
something they want to pursue. They’re exposed to teachers who are veterans in their field who serve as great resources to
their students,” Josh shared.

Governor Jerry Brown has included a significant boost in his budget for Career Technical Education (CTE) across the state. Part of
this budget includes the $400 million CTE Incentive Grant which is designed to encourage school districts to partner with colleges
and businesses, as well as to support the emergence of new and developing CTE programs. Consortiums who receive funds
through the grant will have to match funding dollar-for-dollar and prove their effectiveness in a variety of criteria including
graduation rates, course-completion rates, and the number of students receiving certificates and industry certifications through
these courses.
Baldy View ROP and its member districts Chaffey Joint Union High School District, Chino Valley, Claremont, and Upland Unified
School Districts, have assembled a consortium to apply for this grant opportunity. Good luck to all of us!

Alumni Profile
“I quickly realized that the concepts I was learning in ROP were giving me a head
start in finding an actual, paying-job. The knowledge that I gained in ROP has
carried over to my current job at the scene shop. To have moved forward this
quickly within three years of graduating from high school has been wonderful.”
- Kyle Harte, Citrus College Theatre Scene Shop and Theatre student
Kyle Harte graduated from Claremont High School in 2013 where he took the Baldy View ROP course,
Stage Technology, with Instructor Tom Evans. He currently works at the theatre scene shop at Citrus
College. He is also currently enrolled in Citrus College’s Emerging Theatre Technologies program where he is furthering his studies
in stage technology with an emphasis in lighting.
“The Baldy View ROP course I took really impacted my current educational track. What I learned then supports what I’m learning
now.”
Just like his Stage Technology course at Claremont High School, Kyle’s current college courses are hands-on. Kyle works behind
the scenes in helping the Theatre Department at Citrus College to put on theatrical performances and concerts. It is in the
hands-on approach to learning that Kyle appreciated so much in high school.
“I learned the difference between a hobby and a career path when I took an ROP course,” Kyle said. “I ran on the Track and Field
team and it became very clear to me that running track really wasn’t leading me to my personal career aspirations. I knew
that Stage Technology was more than a hobby and worth more of my energy for my future.”
Kyle’s goals are to finish the Emerging Theatre Technologies program at Citrus College and graduate with his Associates
Degree. He then hopes to continue taking courses at a four-year college and would eventually like to work for Disney or
get involved with television and film.

“I really love teaching at Chino High School. The students enjoy the challenges of
working realistic crime scenes and also making intelligent decisions based on evidence.
They enjoy being challenged and thinking outside of the box. In return, they have
