SPOTLIGHT ON
THE STUDENTS
Students clear a dead tree to make space
for new trees
Students taking the Crop Production as well as
the Ag Sales and Marketing courses with
Instructor Dessa D’Aquila at San Antonio High
School helped give their campus a greener,
more fruitful garden on Thursday and Friday,
February 11th and 12th. In collaboration with
the permaculture educational organization,
Common Vision, students cut, cleared, and dug
out an existing plot on campus to make way for
a dozen new fruit trees. Artistically inclined
students also helped by painting colorful signs to place around the garden to
enhance the area’s aesthetic quality.
The garden will be diverse and feature trees that bear fruit in different seasons,
ensuring that students and staff will be able to enjoy the fruit throughout the year.
The new trees include pineapple guava, apple, peach, and nectarine.
San Antonio Sophomore Eric Kim, who said he would like to attend business school
after high school, shared his experience about preparing the garden as well as his
ROP course.
Students paint signs for the new garden
“I like the Ag Sales and Marketing class because it shows you what kinds of different
jobs are out there. I shoveled some holes to make space for trees. It’s hard work,
but if you’re someone who likes physical work this could be a good career field for
you,” he said.
Students in Robert Martinez’ Fall Criminal
Justice course celebrated receiving their
certificates of completion on Thursday,
January 14th. Students who complete Baldy
View ROP courses receive Certificates of
Completion that list their competencies
learned in the course. Certificates are
outstanding additions to resumes and
transcripts. Congratulations to all of our
students who completed courses this past fall!

SPOTLIGHT ON
THE STUDENTS
Upland High School students in the Baldy View ROP Architectural Drafting
course were treated to an amazing field trip after being invited to tour two
properties developed by the Ratkovich Company. The first location was in
Playa Del Rey, at the former Hughes Aircraft site now known as the Hercules
Campus. The focus of this location was its historic airplane hanger. Longer
than two football fields, when constructed it was said to be the largest
completely wooden structure in the world. The Ratkovich Company has
meticulously returned the building to its original state, and it is currently being
readied for its new tenant, Google/YouTube.
Michael Heimos, Property Manager for the
Hercules Campus, goes over details of the
property with students.
The class then visited The Bloc located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.
This re-development project just opened early this year. Formerly known as
the Broadway Plaza, the original architect designed the building as an “inward
focused” building, protecting visitors from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Ratkovich’s re-development is transforming the property, this time embracing
city life, with a welcoming open design.
Upland High School senior, Tyler Willette, shared, “This field trip was honestly
one of the best I’ve been on. It was an eye opener to see how big a structure
was needed to house such a large machine, and seeing how big of a project
the BLOC is. Hearing how Mr. Ratkovich made his fortune and got to where he
is now was inspiring.

Brooks, for sharing this story!

ALUMNI CONTINUING THEIR EDUCATION
Baldy View ROP Instructor Terry Henson’s Forensic Science course gave
Angelica Perez perspective on the field when she was in high school.
“A lot more goes into solving crimes than what TV shows you,” she said.
“You never understand what forensics is really about until you take a class
in it. Personally, I was already interested in forensics, but ROP courses can
definitely give students the opportunity to get involved in something they
never thought they would be.”
Angelica is enrolled at Mt. San Antonio College’s Police Officer program.
She is working towards eventually working as either a homicide
detective or a forensic technician. Prior to the current semester,
Angelica took a psychology course at Chaffey College.
“My psychology course was good for me to learn about how childhood
affects the way people develop,” she said.
Angelica Perez, with Baldy View ROP Criminal Justice and
Forensic Science Instructor Terry Henson, gives a
presentation about her experience in her Baldy View ROP
Forensic Science course to students during Etiwanda High
School’s Career Day last fall
It’s the development aspect of homicide investigation that interests
Angelica the most. Her favorite part of her BVROP Forensic Science course
was the class activity in building dioramas that represented actual crime
scenes. The diorama project involved research into the entire case
surrounding crimes and culminated in class presentations. Instructor Henson valued Angelica’s work and presentation so much
that he has used her assistance in talking to other students about ROP at Career Day events.
For Angelica, her career goals are all about helping people.
“I’m interested in seeing how people get to that point where they think it’s okay to commit a violent crime. I want to be able to
find out how crimes are committed and help stop them. Even helping one person would make it worth it.”
The Retail Marketing course at Etiwanda High School taught by Instructor Joe
Nash consistently trains students to work and gain employment at various
local retailers. During the fall semester, students were hired to continue
working at the stores where they interned during for the course’s community
classroom component. Stores are located in Rancho Cucamonga and at the
Ontario Mills Shopping Center. Thank you to all of our affiliates who allow our
students to gain hands-on skills through interning at your places of business!

ROP counselors’ Luncheon
Etiwanda High School senior, Cheyenne
Emery, working in her Retail Marketing
community classroom Internship
Students regularly gain employment after taking Instructor Sam Abdelmalek’s
Baldy View ROP Food Service and Hospitality courses at Don Lugo High School.
Students were hired over the previous spring and fall semesters to continue
working at the sites where they interned through the community classroom
component of their courses. Don Lugo Senior, Vincent Poteet, took the Food
Production and Catering course as well as the Food Service and Hospitality
courses and is currently working as a cook at Papachino’s in Chino Hills. Vincent
took the courses so that he could graduate high school early to enlist in the Air
Force. Vincent discussed his ROP experience at the Baldy View ROP Counselors’
Luncheon as a student speaker.

Alumni Profile
“The most beneficial thing about the Baldy View ROP Registered Dental
Assistant course was the hands-on training it provided. I had the
opportunity to intern in a real dental practice and got to network with
dental students from Loma Linda School of Dentistry. ROP is important
for high school students. It sets the foundation for helping high school
students choose a career path.”
- Edelia Navarro, Registered Dental Assistant and student at Fresno Pacific University
Edelia Navarro graduated from Ontario High School last year and is currently enrolled at Fresno Pacific
University where she is studying to become an oral surgeon or an endodontist. While in high school, she
interned for a local dentist, Dr. Devinderpal Nagra, who first informed her about Baldy View ROP. Two of
Dr. Nagra’s assistants took the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) course through Baldy View ROP so he
had familiarity with the program.
“Dr. Nagra’s assistants are perfect examples of why ROP is such a great program,” Edelia said. “I thought
the RDA course would just teach me the basics of dental care but we learned very advanced skills. It was
more vigorous than most of my other high school classes which helped prepare me for the workload I
have in college now. It also taught me about anatomy and biology which helps me to better understand
the classes I’m currently taking in college.”
Edelia also credits the course with teaching her about networking and creating a portfolio in addition to
exposing her to the dental field. Her career goals blossomed in her RDA course when she realized that
she would like to enter either the oral surgery or endodontics career field.
“The complexity of these two specialties is something that has interested me since I took the RDA course
and I know I would enjoy performing procedures within either field for the rest of my life.”
STUDENT COMPETITIONS
