Program (BVROP) is a premiere provider of Career Technical Education in local
high schools and the community by offering over 130 sections in eleven career
pathways areas of study. The eleven pathways consists of:

Alumni Achievements Matias Cena, a Baldy View ROP alumni and Upland High School graduate,
discovered his passion for architecture at a very young age. While he was
attending Upland High School, Matias enrolled
into the ROP Architecture and Drafting class all
four years. The class taught by Mr. Douglas
Brooks . During his time in the class, Mr. Cena
received several awards which include, 1st place
in the National Association of Women in
Construction (NAWIC) for the Architectural
Design Competition and a one-thousand dollar
scholarship from the Baldy View ROP Foundation.
After high school graduation, Matias went on to
obtain his Bachelor’s Degree in architecture at
Cal Poly Pomona and is now an Architectural
Mr. Matias Cena mentoring current students
Designer for Walt Disney Imagineering. He is
currently working on the new Walt Disney World being built in China!
Way to go Matias!
Randy Roman, an Ontario native and Colony High School graduate, is a Police
Officer for the Ontario Police Department. In 2007, Randy visited Career
Technician, Sheila Ghafouri in the Career Center at Colony High School and
enrolled in the Baldy View ROP Careers in Administration of Justice and the Law
Enforcement Academy, it would be one of the best decisions he’s ever made. “I
needed direction and these classes gave me that. I
learned what steps I should be taking to pursue a career in
law enforcement. These were the first stepping stones
towards my future,” Roman said.
After Roman completed the ROP classes and graduated
from high school, he was accepted into the Explorers
Program with the Ontario Police Department. Randy
excelled in the Explorers Program and was promoted to
Post Commander in the program. After a year in the
Explorers Program, he was hired as Police Cadet with a
paid internship. During this time, he was involved with
Officer Randy Roman police ride-a-longs and assisting the police department
personnel. Proceeding his three year internship as a Police
Cadet, Randy Roman was offered the opportunity to attend the San Bernardino
County Sheriff’s Department Academy training. After completion, Randy was hired
by the Ontario Police Department. Randy is grateful for the ROP, appreciative for
his experience, and is certain he made the right choice. "The entire experience
has been positive. I received tools required to do the job and do it correctly."
Alumni Achievements Mr. Joseph Vela has enjoyed a successful career in sales
spanning over 35 years. Over the years, Mr. Vela’s journey has
touched many industry sectors, several companies , and his
title’s have included Manager positions, Project Coordinator,
Sales Representative, Specialist, Advisor, Publisher, and Owner.
In each of those capacities, he was, and still is to this very day, a
Salesman. Joseph’s career in sales has been extremely
rewarding. Even in the most challenging of economic environments, he has
persevered. He has never been unemployed, never applied for any
government assistance, and earned enough to support his family. Indeed, his
career choice has given him a true sense of security and confidence. “I respect
the process of a sale, the dynamic that creates the vision, the presentation that
persuades the desired result, and the “Art” of the salesman. It is an Art. Not
everyone can do it effectively and it is a skill set that he has developed over the
years.” Mr. Vela stated.
Mr. Vela is an advocate for ROP across the state and here is why. He says,
“The one element you need to begin, is a chance. An opportunity in a real
world situation to give you experience to build on. I got my chance with Baldy
View ROP in 1973, in their Retail Sales class.” He was trained in a classroom
setting, then placed in a major department store as an Intern. During his
internship, Mr. Vela showed up on time, worked hard, listened, learned, and
was rewarded by the Department Manager with an interview at another retailer
who needed to hire immediately. Mr. Vela landed his first paying job as a result
of that opportunity and has never looked back. Mr. Vela has never forgotten
the ROP Program that reached out to him, a somewhat troubled youth, with
“No career direction”. He was given a chance.
Mr. Vela is concerned about the future of ROP and has a sincere message to
those who are faced with tough funding decisions, “This is not the place to cut.
I encourage you not to deny a young person the same life changing
opportunity I was given. This program produces real life results. I believe you
make your way through this world based on your hard work, effort, a little luck,
and a chance to succeed. I encourage you to consider the ROP Program as a
provider of such a chance.” - J. Vela
Student Success Congratulations to the nine marketing students who were hired at several retailers
this past semester as a direct result of their internships at their training sites. The
marketing class is taught at Ayala High School, Etiwanda High School, and
Montclair High School by Mr. Paul Grimm and Mr. Jim Londagin.

Voca onal Nursing Gradua on The Baldy View ROP Vocational Nursing Program conducted their graduation
program on January 28, 2014. Commencement exercises began at 7 p.m. and
were held at the Highlander Auditorium in Upland.
Students that took part in speaking presentations were Jennifer Valdez, Julie
Shevette, and Kerri Nordschow who all shared their thoughts and memories on
behalf of their classmates reflecting on their class journey.
This year’s class had twenty-three graduating nursing students that survived a
challenging seventeen months of theory and clinical experiences. This class
was the ninth graduating class in the program’s history. Thank you to Upland
High School for allowing the ceremony to take place at their auditorium.

Career Training Center in Ontario, the Dental Clinic is operated in partnership with

The Green Corner The Career Training Center (CTC) in Ontario
recently received a cosmetic upgrade, artificial
grass! The new turf was installed in early February
and students have been enjoying the new area,

New Commission Board Members Baldy View ROP is excited to have two new Commission Board members Hilary LaConte
and Charles Uhalley.
Hilary LaConte was sworn in as the new Commission Board President.
Hilary was previously the Claremont alternate for the Commission Board.
Hilary has a Master of Arts in Education from Claremont Graduate
University, where she also taught as an Adjunct Associate Professor in
Teacher Education. Hilary is an elected delegate (Region 23C) of the
California School Boards Association. An active parent and community
member, Hilary currently serves on the Board of the Curtain Raisers at
the Claremont Colleges, the Planning Group for Uncommon Good, and
the Claremont Community Coordinating Council. Hilary has served on
the CUSD Science Adoption Committee, the Claremont Parent Faculty
Association, and the El Roble Parent Faculty Association. Hilary works at
Pomona College as the Associate Director of the Program in Public Policy Analysis.
Charles J. Uhalley has served on the Chaffey Joint Union High School Board of Trustees since
1977. Charles has a B.A. Degree from the University of California, Riverside and J.D. Degree
from La Verne Law College. He has been in private law practice since 1975 and is a
member of various professional organizations. Charles serves on the
County Executive Committee and is a California School Board
Association Delegate. His wife, Connie, is a retired school teacher.
They have two daughters who both graduated from the Chaffey
District and four grandchildren who attend local public schools. He
supports working with parents, local businesses, cities and other
school districts in order to increase the effectiveness of school
programs for all students. We wish them both a warm welcome! Welcome New Staff! Mr. Carlos Hinostroza joined Baldy View ROP in December and is currently teaching
Hospitality Occupations at Chaffey High School. Mr. Hinostroza is originally
from Ontario, CA and graduated from Chaffey High School. Carlos has
worked in the hotel industry for over 15 years and has held such positions as:
Restaurant Manager, Banquet Manager, Server, Bellman, and many other
positions for various local hotels. For the past 11 years, he has been teaching
Hospitality Business and Culinary Arts for Pomona Unified School District. He
has a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and a Minor in Organizational
Leadership from Chapman University.
Mrs. Jacqueline Davidson joined Baldy View ROP in December and is currently teaching
Health Careers and Sports Medicine at Claremont High School. She
received her Master of Science in Athletic Training from California Baptist
University from the Athletic Training Education Program in May 2013. She
was honored with the Most Outstanding Athletic Training Student Award
upon her graduation day. Jacqueline has worked with various sport teams,
including UC Riverside Track and Field, and Women’s Soccer to name a
few.

Founda on Fundraiser Night The Baldy View ROP Foundation is hosting a Fundraiser dinner at the Upland Outback
Steakhouse Restaurant on Monday, April 28th 4:00pm - 10:00pm. Tickets are $20 which includes
a three course dinner! Purchase tickets through the Administrative Office prior to the event!
Acceptable methods of payment include cash or check (payable to Baldy View ROP
Foundation). You also have the option of ordering your food to-go. The proceeds raised will
be used to support student scholarships, student loans, and teacher mini-grants! Get your

Tickets must be purchased prior to visit, valid only at specified loca on and hours. Staff In‐Service On Saturday, January 25th, over sixty people attended Baldy View ROP’s Staff Development
In-Service in Rancho Cucamonga. The morning started off with music, a delicious breakfast, and
a friendly ice-breaker. For many Teachers and Career Technicians this was their first opportunity
to meet several newly hired Instructors. Teachers and career technicians met together for a
portion of the meeting and also had an opportunity to meet in smaller
groups to address issues specific to their job. The purpose of the event
along with an upcoming in-service is to update curriculum development
with new state standards. Dr. Michael O’Neill from The BridgeWorks Group
facilitated the conference. We would like to thank Floral Design and
Sales student Laurene Villafonna who designed the twenty fabulous floral
centerpieces at the event and her teacher Mrs. Lorraine Avalos for her
time and effort in delivering the flowers.
Laurene Villafonna and her works of art Founda on Announcements Student Scholarship Due April 9th, 2014 at 3:00 p.m.! Baldy View ROP’s Foundation continuously strives to raise money for scholarships
for the students. All students furthering their education should apply. This is an
excellent way for students to be introduced to the application process and will
reinforce the job skills they are currently learning with ROP classes. For students to
be eligible, the following guidelines must apply:
1. Applicant must be a current Baldy View ROP Student

Applicant must be a high school senior or adult
3. Applicant must have goals for furthering education
4. Applicant must have achieved at least 2.0 high school GPA
5. Applicant must submit a typed essay of no more than 300 words explaining how
this scholarship would assist his/her career and educational/vocational goals
6. Applicant must submit a one page typed résumé
All of the criteria listed above must be met for consideration; applicants will be
rated in each component. Scholarships range up to $1,000 per selected student.

Baldy View ROP receives COE Candidacy The Council on Occupational Education (COE), originally founded in 1971 as a
regional accrediting agency of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools,
is the successor to the Commission on Occupational Education Institutions (COEI).
Last November, Dora Edney, Director of Development/Public Relations and Chris
Martin, Coordinator traveled to Dallas, TX to attend the Candidate Academy
satisfying the requirement for Baldy View ROP to begin the application process for
candidacy with the COE.
Led by Forest DeRenzo, Director of Educational Services, the Baldy View ROP team
thoroughly prepared for the next step of approval: A team visit by the Council to
determine our candidate status. The visiting team was very impressed with the
services, programs, and staff of Baldy View ROP. We are proud to share that the
Council on Occupational Education has approved Baldy View ROP for candidacy.
Student Benefits: Teen Savings Accounts at Chaffey Federal Credit Union
Being a member of Chaffey Federal Credit Union is important no matter what your

LDI cohorts; Julette Barta (CRYROP) and Lilibeth Pinpin (Vallejo City Unified School
District), to tour the assembly floor. Assemblyman Morrell shared that he was a fan
of ROP and was familiar with the BVROP Dental Assistant program.
