Simon Recovering Slowly
Broseley Butcher Simon Gibbons is recovering slowly after he was involved in a serious motorcycle
accident whilst he was competing at the Darley Moor racetrack in Derbyshire at the start of April. The
ex-Bridgnorth Rugby Club player was initially transported to a major trauma unit and has undergone
major surgery to his spinal column, rib cage, cervical & thoracic regions and left leg. In the last few
days he has been moved to the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital just outside
Oswestry, where he will continue his rehabilitation and posted that he would like to thank everyone
for all the cards and kind support. Family and friends are all pulling together to support Paula, his
wife, his two children, Jack and Alice, and Sally his mother. They are ensuring the family run shop
in Broseley remains fully operational while Simon recovers. On the Simon Gibbons Butchers
Facebook Page Mrs Gibbons posted the following message after the news broke of the accident. She
said: “Just thought I would say, despite rumours, we are still very much open. Andrew is doing a very
good job after all he’s been taught by Simon and we are trying our very best to keep the shop open
with all your wonderful support we hope to continue to do so. We would also like to say thank you
for all your phone calls, cards and Facebook messages. We are overwhelmed with people’s kindness.”
Simon has been running the family business in Broseley for well over 20 years and has 30 years
experience in the trade. Editor: “I have known Simon for well over 20 years and would like to add
my best wishes to him and his family at this difficult time and wish him a full recovery in time”. Carl
Exciting Times For Broseley In Bloom
Broseley will be opening its gardens to the public on Sunday 26 June when the town will be holding
its annual Open Gardens Day. Last year's event saw some eight gardens open to the public and this
year's Day promises to be just as extensive. The gardens will be open from 1.30-5.30pm giving visitors
ample time to enjoy all those on display. Refreshments will be available at All Saints' Church in
Church Street and tickets may be obtained from there on the day, from any of the open gardens, or in
advance from James Hurdley (E Davis) or Downes in the High Street. The cost is £3.00 each, with
children under 12 free. In addition to this popular attraction, it has been decided to reinstate Broseley's
Garden Competition, starting this year with three categories - best frontage display, best private garden
and best business or commercial display. Judging will be held in July with entries to be received by
the end of June. Entry forms are available from James Hurdley (E Davis) or Downes in the High Street
or from the Weekly Shop in Elizabeth Crescent. Results will be announced in July.
For further information on both the Open Gardens Day and the Garden Competition contact Carol
Cooper, 01952 882715.
Haycop Work Recognised
The Haycop, in Broseley, has been awarded Local Wildlife Status by Shropshire Wildlife, in recognition
of the successful work carried out by volunteers over several years to make the site more hospitable for
wildlife. The site also provides a valuable open space for the local community and is regularly used by
local schools and youth groups for both study and outdoor activities. Chairman of the Haycop
Conservation Group, Adrian Miles, said that they had been working towards getting that status since the
project was set-up in 2007. He said “We just wanted to provide Broseley with its own nature reserve
and are absolutely delighted that we have achieved Local Wildlife Status. The site attracts a lot of
interest from people in the town and we will now aim to maintain it and build up a number of species
that inhabit or visit the area. New volunteers are always welcome to help preserve the Haycop for future
generations and regular working days are held”. The area is noted for its lowland heather, native
bluebells, broom yellow archangel and buckler ferns. It also is home to three rare species of fungi, one
of which is only the second record of it in the British Isles. It also supports a colony of dingy skipper
and green hairstreak butterflies, while a rare white admiral butterfly has been recorded in the last two
years, increasing its range from the Ironbridge side of the River Severn. The Haycop Conservation
Group is very grateful for the help they have had with this work from Cadi Price and her enthusiastic
group of volunteers from the Severn Gorge Conservation Trust. Other recent work carried out at the site
involved the fitting of a metal gate to give easier access to maintain a culvert which drains excess water
off the site. For further information about the group visit www.thehaycop.org.
Broseley Born Footballer Dicky Passes Away
Broseley born footballer Richard Rhodes, know as Dicky, who signed for Wolves and played against
Busby Babes legends like Duncan Edwards and Bobby Charlton, has died aged 80. He was brought up
in Broseley as one of eight children in a two-bedroomed house, six of whom slept in one bed, began
as a centre forward at Ironbridge Youth Club in 1950 and played for Shropshire for 10 years between
1951 and 1962, playing in every position except that of goalkeeper. He was 15 when he signed for Stan
Cullis’ Wolves team but at the age of 18 his football career was cut short prematurely, when he did his
national service. But instead of doing the usual 2 years, he was persuaded by an RAF officer to put
himself down as a physical instructor, which meant five years. Wolves were not prepared to wait that
long so let him go. In all his career his biggest supporter was his wife Sybil, (who survives him) and
who started courting Dicky when she was 15. He leaves children Tony, Samantha and Simon, (his
fourth child was the late Debra) and 10 grandsons. He passed away at his home in Madeley but his
funeral was held back in Broseley at All Saints Church.

opening hours - no longer open Tuesday mornings. We can usually be reached by telephone between
9.30 am and 3.00pm Monday to Thursday.
Power Station Artefacts come to Broseley
We are very pleased to report that a number of artefacts from the Ironbridge Power Station will be
finding a new home in Broseley. Uniper have donated the items to the Town Council following a
successful bid by a team of local enthusiasts including Paul Taylor (Chairman of the Heritage Centre
Project), Gill Pope (Local History Society), Graham Hollox and Town Councillors.
The items include four large, metal sculptures by Gerry Foxall, which will be sited around the town
for all to see. The sculptures depict workers, horses and wagons, as used in the coal mining industry.
The other, smaller pieces include Coalport china figurines, signage, prints, commemorative items and
a visitors’ book dating from 1933. It is planned to display these artefacts in the proposed Broseley
Heritage Centre, within All Saints Church.
Everybody Active Broseley
Residents, community groups and organisations in Broseley are invited to be part of a new initiative
to address physical inactivity in the town. The scheme is part of Shropshire’s Everybody Active Every
Day Community fund project, which is being piloted in just four towns across Shropshire.
An Everybody Active Broseley working group is being set up to launch the scheme in the town. The
group will engage and work with the local community to come up with ideas for projects.
Organisations in Broseley and Barrow will be invited to submit their projects to encourage physical
activity, in particular amongst less active groups. The projects can be targeted to any or all ages, from
early years to later life. The projects will then go out to a public vote in the town to determine which
ones will be taken forward and funded. The maximum amount available to each of the four pilot towns
is £30,000, but this will be adjusted according to community response and to ensure a genuine
competition can take place. The response to this competitive process will indicate the level of
successful community engagement. If you are interested in joining the working group, please contact
Kerry Rogers, Community Enablement Officer on 07990 085206 or email
[email protected].
Bus Service Update
With cutbacks at Shropshire Council, there have been concerns that local bus services might suffer.
However, the General Manager at Arriva in Telford has confirmed that service 9, which connects
Telford, Ironbridge, Broseley, Bridgnorth and Wolverhampton is, in the main, a commercial operation
with no changes planned for the foreseeable future. Service 18, which is subsidised and operates a
limited number of trips per day between Telford and Much Wenlock, has a contract which is not due
to expire until 2020.
The bus route through Broseley includes many narrow roads. If you are parking your car on one of
these roads (particularly Barber Street, Duke Street, King Street), please remember to leave space for
the bus to pass.

Town Looks Forward To Second Festival
The whole town is looking forward to the Summer and it will kick off with the return of the Broseley
Festival on the weekend of the 18th & 19th June. Last years inaugural Festival was a massive success with
thousands of people attending the event over the weekend which earned its main organisers Nicky Ashton
and Jo Pritchard joint Broseley’s Citizens of the Year for their tremendous efforts in getting the Festival
off the ground from scratch. But I am sure Nicky & Jo would say it was a whole team of people which
helped getting the Festival on. They hope this years event which starts at 4pm on the Saturday will be even
bigger and better and will again include lots of live entertainment, food, drink, stalls, and the opportunity
to browse around our town, visiting and supporting the shops & businesses and have a fun filled weekend.
Headlining on the Saturday will be Whole Lotta DC which is a tribute Act to AC DC. Also due to perform
on the Saturday are Savannah, Rhythm Dogs, Marching Already, Dinky, The Endings & Lost the Plot.
Headlining on the Sunday will be The Superskas, a 'super cool, high octane, 9 piece SKA tribute band'.
Also due to perform on the Sunday are Alive & Kicking, The Jackfield Riverbillies (who have reformed
especially for the Festival), Tom Wenlock, Rhi & Ed, Kiss The Thief, Lisa Stevens and The Inmates.
Admission to the Festival is Free but the committee with appreciate any donations. Broseley residents are
encouraged to walk to the Festival leaving visitors to use the parking that's being provided for the event.
New Salon Opens
Frederico’s unisex Hair Salon opened at the end of May in the former Evermore Florist Building in
Church Street. Owner Victoria Kelly, has over 20 years experience in the Hairdressing profession and
would love for the Broseley and surrounding communities to support her in this new exciting adventure.
Mal’s Shepherding Skills Come In Handy
Police Officers have to have many skills and it helps if shepherding is one of them. PCSO Mal
Goddard who covers Broseley was on patrol recently and had to shepherd a sheep and three lambs off
the Broseley to Bridgnorth Road who could have caused an accident. Well done Mal!

BUSINESS FEATURE
Could you be a Barking Mad Host?!
The Barking Mad system works to match dog
lovers with a furry pal on a temporary dog
holiday (as an alternative to kennels). Looking
after a dog gives many a lifeline and purpose
which they might not have had otherwise. Host
dog sitters benefit from the proven medical
advantages exercising and looking after a dog can
have. How it works: As a dog holiday host you
provide a loving home environment where your
doggie visitor relaxes and feels at home. There is
no need to worry about paperwork or dealing
with the customer yourself as that is all taken care
of. As the dog host, all you need to do is meet with
me, Anne Kessell, your Barking Mad dog
holiday agent and you agree together the type of
dogs you like and when you are available to look
after
them.

A Broseley couple recently celebrated their 70th
Anniversary by making a 560 mile round trip to
have a blessing at the church where they were
married. Donald and Ruby Glasspool, of Quarry
Road were married at a church in Rosewell near
Edinburgh in 1946 and returned there for a
special ceremony with their family. Mrs
Glasspool, 91, said “It was absolutely wonderful.
Everyone was so nice and kind. We both enjoyed
every minute of it. She was born in America but
her family moved to the UK when she was only
2 and met Donald in Hawick, Scotland when she
was 15, while he was stationed there in the
British Army. He was in the Royal Signals
Lincolnshire Regiment as a corporal and was
then based in Burma before he was de-mobilised
in 1946. They were married shortly after he
returned to Scotland. Mrs Glasspool said “I
waited for him to come back from Burma and I
met him at Waverley Station at Edinburgh. I
knew he was the one for me”. The couple made
the move to Shropshire in the 1970’s after he
retired from being a prison officer.

Man arrested over indecent exposure in Broseley
Police have arrested a man who allegedly exposed himself to a woman who he asked for directions. The
man indecently exposed himself in his car to the woman on Ironbridge Road in Broseley in May. He
asked the woman for directions, then exposed himself to her before driving off. The woman phoned the
police and passed the vehicle's registration number onto them, as well as a description of the man.
Officers then quickly made a short search of the area, located the vehicle and arrested the driver.

The Broseley “Alive Day” is a return event being organised by members of the Broseley Medical
Practice Patient’s Group. It will take place on Friday 10th June. Its purpose is to provide public
information for the local residents. There will be about 20 stalls from a variety of public and private
backgrounds providing information about support services available for all different ages, the
emergency services, energy conservation and savings, local clubs and organisations as well as advice
on diet and better health ( there will be an opportunity to check blood pressure and measure your body
mass index (BMI). It will be held in the Victoria Hall in the centre of the town from 10.00am to
2.00pm. Broseley is a great place to live in - make it even better by visiting the ‘Alive Day’ event as
well as a place to meet and chat and ‘have a cup of tea’. For further information/details, please contact

Ron Celebrated Birthday With History Walk
Well known Jackfield historian Ron Miles recently celebrated his 87th Birthday by a leading a 2 mile local
history walk. He said before the event “Its is going to be quite unusual. It is going to be from the Boat Inn
at Jackfield to the Robin Hood Pub. I’ve produced a series of laminated photographs so that every 150
yards I can show what was here before. By the time we get to the Half Moon the photographs will get
more interesting because from the Half Moon to Jackfield Church everything has changed completely”.

On Broseley Beat By CSO Malcolm Goddard T: 0300 333 3000 e: [email protected]
Hello from your Safer Neighbourhood Team. Summer is on its way and hopefully the weather will
show some improvement. At this time of year Broseley and the surrounding area has seen an increase
in shed and garage break. The main target of such break-ins is normally power tools, fishing equipment
and expensive bicycles - all items that are relatively easy to sell on. We have also seen a number of
thefts of high value agricultural equipment in the area, an offence that requires considerable planning.
While there is no way of making your property 100% secure, there are a few simple precautions that
you can take that may be enough to deter a burglar. The most obvious is to fit a robust secure lock or
padlock. Security lighting and CCTV are other options you may consider, depending on the value of
the items you are protecting. It is also worth considering making an inventory of those valuable items,
taking careful note of the makes and models of the equipment and, if possible, any serial numbers.
Photographs of unique items would also be good. There are a number of companies that offer property
marking material and you could also consider this an option as the presence of a sign warning any
potential burglar that your valuable items are marked can be a strong deterrent.
Can I also ask everybody to report any suspicious people that they may notice taking undue interest
in garages, sheds and outbuildings. If they are with a vehicle, details of that vehicle could be vital to
the Police. You can report any such activity on the new Non Emergency Police number, 101. With the
current level of break ins occurring, any such report may assist the Police in identifying and arresting
those responsible.
While there are three officers in the Safer Neighbourhood Team and a number of response Police
Officers on patrol in the area, obviously we cannot be in the area 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
and do rely on the public to be our eyes and ears. It is your phone calls and reports that help in
deterring crime and identifying those involved.
To contact the Safer Neighbourhood Team you can ring 101, contact us on email via
[email protected] or leave a message on our voicemail via 101 and ask for the
Broseley & Much Wenlock Safer Neighbourhood Team Voiemail Box. In an emergency, always call

Shropshire Churches have been targeted 156 times over the last five years new figures have revealed. The
church with the highest number of thefts was St Mary’s Church in St Mary’s Place, Shrewsbury, which
was targeted on 11 separate occasions. Headstones, ornaments, tiles, roof slates, lead flashing, oil and wine
were among the items stolen from the county’s churches in the last five years. Of the 180 items stolen only
seven were recovered during this period. Police say they continue to take crime in churches very seriously
and that some of the most common thefts have been of lead from rooftops. Thieves strike even when action
has been taken to deter them. While the main roof of St Peter’s Church in Edgmond was replaced with
stainless steel during the 1960s, it did not stop a gang targeting the lead flashing. All Saints Church in
Broseley was targeted once. In an effort to deter the thieves the government set up the National Metal Task
Force to co-ordinate policing, and also passed the Scrap Metal Dealers Act which required dealers to hold
a licence. Cash payments for scrap metal have been banned since December 2012 in order to make it
harder for thieves to sell on the metal. Thefts of money, including from charity boxes, have also been a
problem for churches. Some have gone to great lengths to step up security, e.g. the 900-year-old St
Andrew’s Church in Shifnal invested in SmartWater technology after being targeted three times in two
months back in 2007. SmartWater leaves a permanent code on the surfaces it is applied to, which can be
traced back to its owner if placed under ultra-violet light. However, as churches step up security, it seems
the thieves are using ever more sophisticated methods to commit their crimes. In some cases, drones have
even been used to carry out reconnaissance operations. Superintendent David McWilliam, of West Mercia
Police, said: “We will continue to investigate any reports of thefts, and pursue all lines of enquiry to trace
the offenders responsible. We would encourage churches and places to review their security measures and
look at using alarms and CCTV whenever appropriate. It is really important that people also take an active
role in looking after their communities and report such incidents to us by calling 101.”

Harwood To Provide New Service
Local Estate Agents Harwood are expanding their
services with the appointment of Simon Morris, who has
10 years experience in estate agency and has been an
independent land buyer for more than 12 years. He also
has a lot of valuable experience of buying sites without
planning permission and helping obtain consents for
developers. Simon said “My role with Harwood’s is to
act as a consultant for all clients who have queries on
planning applications and to match developments and
projects to our database, ranging from single plots
through to multi million pound developments of several acres” Patrick Smitheman, Managing
Director of Harwood Shropshire, said “With Simon coming on board in this exciting new role he
brings a different dimension to Harwood’s arsenal of skills”.
Great Turnout For Tennis Sessions
Leaders at Broseley Tennis Club were delighted that nearly 40 people took the opportunity to pick up
a racket and have a go as part of the Great British Tennis Event, which is an initiative from the Lawn
Tennis Association to get more people playing the sport. Coaching was provided over the weekend at
the Free sessions and the offer of a free follow on coaching session as well as reduced membership
deal, proved very popular. Chairperson of the club Pat Clarke also said that there was plenty of interest
in the coaching from Sports4U which is on offer on Friday evenings for all ages in term time.
Bookings and enquiries can be made with Richard Wheeler on 07941 722980. The club is also keen
to increase its membership and further information is available on the club website
www.broseleytennisclub.co.uk.

FOOTBALL
AFC Broseley Finish Fourth
AFC Broseley have had an excellent season in the Mercian Regional Football League
Premier Division finishing in fourth place, which is a vast improvement on where they
finished last season, when they found it very tough in their first go in this higher division.
They unfortunately lost their last two games so they couldn’t hold onto third place, but at
the start of the season they would have been happy with the position they finished in.
