Dear Vertical Reader,
For most, New Year’s Day offers a brief opportunity to be merry and to forget the past while hoping
for the best. For some skeptics, it’s only another day in the endless chain of time. For you, however,
2011 will be more than a number, but a new state of mind. There’s our Spring list for starters.
The youths in Lychee Light Club, a graphic novel by manga maestro Usamaru Furuya, aren’t gonna
wait for others and their politics to guide them to a better future. The teens are not only ready
and willing to make stark decisions, they’ve got god-like plans to reshape the world in their own
image.
The heroines of two on-going contemporary manga series may be a little more shy but are no less
ambitious. In 7 Billion Needles, one high school girl has the potential to change the course of evolution. To combat an alien attack, she will alter her own reality to make sure that homo sapiens stays
on top of the food chain. Not to be forgotten is Asumi, the little dreamer of our acclaimed series
Twin Spica, with whom we may yet slip the surly bonds of Earth.
Touching the face of God doesn’t require rocket science, though. For the lost man in Takeshi
Kitano’s A Guru Is Born, good old religion promises a new perspective. The novel explores faith
with a subtlety and wisdom that you don’t expect from most notoriously acerbic comedians.
If you’re already in a mood for facing new challenges, experience the terror that Puzzlemaster
Nishio has been bringing stateside in Number Place, a series of hardcore Sudoku whose third and
latest offering will be color-coded Yellow.
If the killer puzzles have adverse effects on your brain, we’re sorry, but you might need to look for
Black Jack—the globetrotting surgeon has got some sick skills. You might also want to check in
with health counselor and celebrity chef Kumiko Ibaraki. Her cookbook The Worry-Free Kitchen
makes sure your brain is supplied with nutrients even while you go on a low-calorie diet. If all else
fails, the full-color cat manga Chi’s Sweet Home offers the best medicine. You’ll be laughing like a
madman.
This spring kicks off a wondrous year in our unique brand of new wave publishing. Okay, while
our books don’t guarantee life-changing results, they’ll improve your quality of life for some 365
days. Promise.

The Lychee Light Club
By Usamaru Furuya
April 19, 2011
Graphic Novel /Manga
Trade Paperback, 978-1-935654-06-3
320 pages, 5.5 x 7.5 inches, $16.95/$21.00
For as long as history can recall teens have always wanted to rebel against society’s norms.
The nine young members of The Lychee Light
Club have ambitions to change their world by
building a god-like machine that will realize
their wildest fantasies. The android Lychee was
initially developed for one purpose: to seize
women for their secret empire. Through its interactions with the many members within this
most curious of clubs, the machine eventually
becomes self-aware and is soon equally capable
of measuring beauty and executing justice.
In Usamaru Furuya’s triumphant return to
the U.S., Furuya pays homage to his roots as a
young fan of Tokyo’s Grand Guignol Theater by
rendering the troupe’s most stunning play into
a graphic novel. The Lychee Light Club realizes
Grand Guignol’s splatter house roots and ramps up the element of teenage angst that is signature
Furuya—an eclectic mix of youth-inspired pop and surreal imagery.
• Promotional posters and postcards to be distributed at trade shows and comic book conventions.
• Comic art exhibit tentatively planned for Summer 2011.
• Advance copies to be distributed for review.
• Co-op available.
Born in 1968, Usamaru Furuya was, like many comic artists his age, a fan of Osamu Tezuka. During elementary
school Furuya enrolled in the Osamu Tezuka Manga Correspondence Program and soon began to submit portraits to
the legendary boys’ comic magazine Shonen King. A graduate of Tama Art University, Furuya majored in oil painting
and briefly studied Butoh dance. His tastes began to shift toward subcultures before he graduated, as he would
eventually train in the theatrical arts with Tokyo’s Grand Guignol Theater (the inspiration for The Lychee Light Club).
There he made sets and costumes for their naturalistic horror performances.
Prior to his graduation in 1994, Furuya saw his first comic works published by the seminal underground comic anthology
GARO. A collection of surreal comic strips featuring high-school girls, PalePoli, was Furuya’s first assault against the
mainstream comics world, redefining how readers consume and experience Japanese comics, while deconstructing
the many memes that were popular at the time. He has since penned sixteen comic series published by Japan’s most
prestigious publishers.
Currently considered one of Japan’s most talented artists, Furuya has drawn the character designs for feature-length
live-action films and recently had his comic art on exhibit in the U.S. and France.

Fiction/Literar y
Trade Paperback, 978-1-934287-31-6
208 pages, 5.25 x 7.5 inches

Alone without a job or a woman to give his life
meaning, Kazuo Takayama embarks on a new
life. Despite not having much pre-existing interest in religion, the young and naive man finds
himself compelled by the life of the cloth as he
decides to join what appears to be an impressive new religious movement. Upon experiencing the initial recruitment pretense, he realizes
that among those participating in this new social movement are some who genuinely believe
in the sect’s principles, while others have more
conniving motives. And before he could even
properly learn the cult’s ideology, Kazuo has ascended to become its new leader.
The basis for the 1993 movie of the same name
featuring Kitano in a supporting role, A Guru Is
Born takes a comical look at a continuing global phenomenon that is just as First World as Third
World—the proliferation of new religious movements.
• Completed books mailed for review to magazines such as Entertainment Weekly and Variety; newspapers such
as The New York Times, The Village Voice and the Los Angeles Times.
• Print and online advertising at book-specific venues
• Promotional materials to be distributed at prominent film festivals.

Takeshi Kitano was born in Tokyo’s Adachi ward in 1947. After dropping out of Meiji University he found work as an
elevator operator in an east Tokyo nightclub, where he earned the ways of the entertainment business from comedian
Senzaburo Fukami. Kitano initially made a name for himself in stand-up comedy as one half of Japan’s hottest
comedic duo Two Beat.
In addition to a successful career as a comedian, Kitano would eventually branch out into a wide range of media. A
true modern-day Renaissance man, he made his mark on radio, writing, art, television, and film. Foreign audiences
began to take notice of Kitano’s accomplishments in 1993, when his movie Sonatine received critical acclaim at the
Cannes Film Festival. Since then Kitano has won a number of awards including the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion
Award for Fireworks (1997). His collection of short stories, Boy, was published in English by Vertical in 2007.
Kitano continues to be a global personality and in March 2010 was named Commander of the Order of the Arts and
Letters of France.

to worry about fat and calories.

Kumiko Ibaraki is an established chef, nurse, nutrition counselor, and health
care provider.

Before starting her own cooking school, Ibaraki’s research focused on healthier
alternatives to traditional baked goods for use within regional school lunch
programs. She is a licensed cook and founded the Ibaraki Cooking Studio in
Tokyo. Today she is a regular guest on Japanese television where her indulgent

By Tetsuya Nishio
April 26, 2011
Puz zle, Paperback
160 pages, 5 x 7 inches, $7.95/$9.95
Few know that “Sudoku” is actually an American invention that has been imported back
from Japan where, ironically, it’s still often
called by its original name of “Number Place,”
or nam-puré for short. Master Nishio, who did
more than anyone else to establish the puzzle as
a standard, continues to handcraft the toughest
specimens known to man, and his hardest ones
are the most popular.
Only those who wish to experience Sudoku at
its purest can call Number Place home. With its
modest price point and portable trim size, getting to Number Place is a breeze. Unique bonus
puzzles at the end are designed to beckon even
the most jaded of gamers to Nishio’s logical lair.

Tetsuya Nishio is a world champion of number-logic puzzles. He reigns as
the single-most important figure in Sudoku in Japan. In the late 1980s he
invented O’Ekaki (Paint by Sudoku) puzzles, which are steadily becoming as
popular as Sudoku. He is also the chairman of the Japan Puzzle Team at the
annual World Puzzle Championships.
According to The Times of London, “Tetsuya Nishio is the undisputed grand
‘puzzle master’ of Sudoku: a bespectacled fiend from the darkest suburbs of
Tokyo who spends his every waking hour devising abominable new ways to
torture our brain cells. His commitment to deviousness is absolute.”
At the 2010 World Sudoku Championship, Nishio lead Team Japan as team
captain to a third place finish amongst the greatest Sudoku puzzlers in the
world!

Konami made her professional debut in 1982 with the serialized comic Petit Cat Jam-Jam
for Kodansha’s seminal shoujo manga magazine NakaYoshi. In her nearly thirty-year career,
Konami has penned more than a dozen comic series, with the majority of them focusing

Twin Spica
By Kou Yaginuma
Manga/Science Fiction

Approx. 200 pages each, 5.5 x 7.5 inches, $10.95/$12.99
Ages 13 and Up
When Japan’s first attempt at manned space exploration ended in
tragedy, a nation went into mourning, sending any ambitions for
many hopeful astronauts crashing. Now, more than 15 years later,
a new generation of young space travelers has emerged from the
wreckage of the first Lion Program to rekindle mankind’s dream to
conquer space. In the fifth and sixth installments of this gripping
sci-fi drama, a difficult atmosphere re-entry simulation triggers
memories the youths had kept under wraps.

Twin Spica was one of the best-received manga of 2010:
It’s easy to see why the series was a smash hit in its native land…
Each page contains more genuine emotion than an entire space
fleet’s worth of similarly themed stories. Opening with a strong
introductory volume, this series shows great promise and bodes
well for future installments.
—Publishers Weekly
A tale whose strength comes from solid storytelling, thoughtful
plotting, and realistic characterizations.
—ICv2
Ultimately, the manga surprised me. Reading about Twin Spica’s
lead trying to go into space, I got choked up. —Ain’t It Cool News

Born during the final stages of the Apollo Program, comic artist Kou Yaginuma made his
debut with the Twin Spica pilot story 2015: Fireworks (originally published in the July 2000
issue of Media Factory’s Comic Flapper magazine). He followed his debut with a follow-up
mini-series called Asumi focusing on the early childhood of Twin Spica’s young heroine Asumi
Kamogawa. That heartfelt story, coupled with Yaginuma’s warm artwork, won over the young
artist many comic fans on his way to becoming the year’s most decorated new artist. The
Asumi series was such a runaway success Media Factory signed Yaginuma up to pen Twin
Spica for Comic Flapper in 2001.

Black Jack
By Osamu Tezuka
Graphic Novel /Manga
Trade Paperback

Ages 13 and Up

Since its debut in the pages of Akita Shoten’s Weekly Shonen Champion magazine,
critics have agreed Black Jack revitalized
Osamu Tezuka’s manga career. The many
tales of this most popular character were
as much of a revolution in shonen(boys’) storytelling back then as they are a must-read
for every manga aficionado now. Whether
for casual reading or more literary purposes, Black Jack has something to supplement everyone’s minimal manga requirements. At
its core is a man’s undying passion for the medical field, developed
in his days as a medical student.

Black Jack is a dramatic, nearly Byronic figure… With genrespanning stories—horror, sci-fi, romance—and Tezuka’s signature blend of drama, bathos and extreme broad comedy jammed
together on every page, Black Jack is a wild but extravagantly
entertaining ride that’s far more accessible than the author’s
novel-length epics.
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
What makes Black Jack so great, in addition to Tezuka’s artwork
and whirlwind narrative velocity (you can either breeze through
these volumes or linger on the details), is his bottomless bag of
stories. Tezuka effortlessly integrates scores of different surgical
procedures into short, sharp tales that eviscerate the codified
vicissitudes (especially reticence and duty) of Japanese society
with, yes, surgical precision. —Richard Gehr, The Village Voice

Osamu Tezuka was born on November 3, 1928, in Osaka. He originally aimed to become a physician and later earned
his degree; however, he chose to become a manga artist, a far less prestigious vocation when he entered it. Tezuka’s
work changed the concept of the Japanese cartoon, transforming it into an art form. He lived out his entire life
tirelessly pursuing his efforts, producing more than 150,000 pages of graphic storytelling before his death at the age
of 60 on February 8, 1989.

Februar y 8, 2011
Manga/Sci-Fi, Trade Paperback
184 pages, 5.5 x 7.5 inches, $10.95/$12.99
Ages 16 and up
After surviving her showdown with the intergalactic terrorist Maelstrom, Hikaru attempts
to return to society with peace of mind that
mankind is safe for now. Unfortunately, her
very reality might be torn asunder as she no longer has one alien life form residing within her
bloodstream, but two! The hunter and the hunted are both living symbiotically inside of Hikaru
and the teen begins to suffer from a strange new
form of multiple-personality disorder.
Evolution and humanity’s place in history are
core themes in this penultimate volume of 7 Billion Needles. Inspired by Hal Clement’s golden
age science-fiction classic Needle, Tadano’s debut work explores whether mankind’s position
at the top of the evolutionary hierarchy can be
usurped if not by genetics, then by alien science.
In this gripping homage, mankind’s survival depends on one girl who, after being reborn, wants
to reaffirm mankind’s desire for progress.

Graphic Novel /Manga, Hardcover, 978-1-934287-51-4
704 pages, 6 x 8 inches, $26.95/$33.00, Ages 16 and up
One of Tezuka’s most astute political narratives, Ayako stages a completely original
cast and hews to realist conventions. The author’s sci-fi and fantasy tropes are notably absent in this portrayal of Japanese life. The Tenge clan, once a powerful family
of landowners in rural northern Japan, are now faced with the reality of American
occupation in the aftermath of World War II. Political, economic, and social change
begins to tear into the many Tenge siblings, while a strange marriage agreement
creates resentment between the eldest son and his sire. When the family seems to
have completely fallen apart, they turn their collective rage on what they believe to
be the source of their troubles: the newest member of the Tenge family, the youngest
daughter Ayako.

Each paperback edition features artwork by Naoyuki Katoh from the original Japanese editions.
The adventure introduces readers to the leopard-masked warrior who cannot remember his past.
Befriended by fugitive heirs to a fallen kingdom and joined by a self-centered mercenary and a

through a treacherous desert wasteland.
