The Evening Sale
Jeff Zacharia
President
The wine “Evening Sale” concept was born from the great evening art auctions, which featured
only masterpieces in their respective categories—Impressionist, Contemporary, and so on. These
auctions were the highlight of the fall and spring season in the art world, a “must attend” event,
originally black tie, that set the marketplace for rare art. The idea of the Evening Sale for wine
is the same: a short, focused wine auction, a respite from the multi-day sales that have become
the norm in our industry. A sale so focused that it could be held in a single evening. We’re very
proud of the catalog you hold in your hands. It’s a return to what the Evening Sale should be—
the best of the best.
The tradition of this introductory letter is a breakdown of some of the sale highlights. As I sat
down to write this letter, I realized I was hesitant to follow that convention here because, really,
everything in this auction is a highlight. The wines in the Evening Sale were hand-picked from
the great cellars our specialists have gotten to know over the years. Are there standouts among
the standouts? For sure.
The cornerstone of this auction is one impressive cellar (Lots 239-365). Burgundy is on the tip of
everyone’s tongue in the auction world these days (sometimes literally, though not often enough
for those that love it) and this cellar’s main focus is the Côte d’Or. The DRC offering alone is
phenomenal—40 bottles of Romanée Conti alone, and almost all of it in banded OWC. The
Domaine’s other vineyards are well-represented too, including a vertical of assortments, and
Montrachet. There’s more than that too: Leroy, Leflaive, Jayer, and so on. You probably already
know this if you’re holding this catalog, but I’ll remind those who might not: these wines are
exceptionally rare. There won’t be another opportunity to bid on them, in these quantities, again
in the near future.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out some of the other regions represented in the sale. Two imperials
of ’82 Lafite (Lots 12 & 169), magnums of ’61 Gruaud Larose (Lot 56) with excellent provenance,
Madeira from an ancient, storied castle cellar (Lots 452-458), Harlan and Screaming Eagle and
Schrader and Champagne at the height of maturity. I’ll stop there, though, because the real way
for you to take in this impressive offering is to spend some time with the catalog. Peruse it, and
really get a feel for what Zachys has put together for your bidding pleasure.
We look forward to seeing you at the Four Seasons for this landmark sale, one which is already
shaping up to be the event of the fall season. Black tie optional!
Sincerely,
Jeff Zacharia

Large Format Legends from Bordeaux
(Lots 11-26)
The wines in this section have been assembled over the past several decades by a longtime customer of Zachys. He is a passionate
connoisseur of fine French wine with a particular focus on large format bottles. The best thing about big bottles is that they’re big.
But big bottles take up a lot of room, and this consignor has decided it’s time for some prudent cellar pruning to make room in
the cellar. All wines have been stored in temperature-controlled conditions. Highlights include a 6L and a magnum of ’82 Lafite, a
magnum of ’82 Latour, and a lovely bottle of ’93 Echézeaux from the inimitable Henri Jayer.

Screaming Eagle’s Broad Wingspan
It’s rare. It’s expensive. And there’s a mystique about it. But Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon is no pretender. It’s the real thing,
and it deserves to be considered among Napa Valley’s prestige wines...
You can’t make wine this magnificent without fabulous grapes, and Screaming Eagle clearly comes from a spectacular vineyard…
On the east side of Oakville, near the Oakville Crossroad…while ripening Cabernet (and smaller amounts of Merlot and Cabernet
Franc) is routinely easy in this area, one of the trademarks of Oakville Cabernet is that the wines often display an herbal quality that
manifests itself in a variety of subtleties, including hints of anise, sage, dusty berry, cedar and occasionally a whiff of new leather and
tar. You find these shades of herb in Cabernets like Heitz Martha’s Vineyard (grown on the west side of Oakville), with its signature
minty currant personality, or Groth, which is one of the cooler sites on the valley floor. Screaming Eagle captures the best of all these
elements. It also epitomizes exquisite balance, managing both to be enormously complex and concentrated, yet elegantly styled, with
a smooth, polished texture.
James Laube, Wine Spectator, November 3, 2005
Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2002
Napa Valley

classy finish lets the sheer purity of the fruit come through
beautifully...97." WA 12/11.

THE
A Long List of Luminaries
evening
SALE
(Lots 46-83)
1961 looms large in the minds of those who enjoy claret. Latour is usually called out as one of the greats of a vintage—a wine
that almost always makes its way to “wines of the century” and “wines to try before you die” lists. Our consignor would likely
agree, but he would also point you towards ’61 Gruaud Larose. A wine that doesn’t get as many accolades, but does receive praise
from true connoisseurs of mature claret. The magnums in this selection were only released from this cellar because the consignor
has enough of the wine to last him. The other wines in this selection are some of the best from their regions and vintages, too.
The legendary ’89 Haut Brion, large format ’96 Lafite and Latour, ’98 Pétrus, ’90 Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse, 1990 Hommage
à Jacques Perrin… the list goes on and on. Each of these is a treasure. To have the opportunity to purchase them all in the same
auction is nearly unprecedented.

I’ve often thought I need to wait for the perfect moment to open that special bottle. Sometimes the perfect moment is a random
Tuesday night surrounded by close friends. Late last year, I was able to taste the magnificent Château d`Yquem 1967. Notes of
peach, apricot, candied ginger and orange still linger. A random Tuesday night was the perfect occasion.” Santosh Varghese

Armand Rousseau
One will get little argument to the assertion that Domaine Armand Rousseau is the finest estate in Gevrey Chambertin...
The vintages of the 1980s and 1990s at Domaine Rousseau have produced one of the greatest runs of profound Burgundy ever
witnessed by any estate in the region, with the domaine producing legendary efforts in the widely recognized great years of the span
from 1985 to 1999. Their two flagship bottlings of Chambertin and Chambertin “Clos de Bèze” have always ranked amongst the top
dozen wines to be found in these vintages.
Of the two Grand Crus at the pinnacle of the brilliant portfolio of Rousseau wines, the Chambertin “Clos de Bèze” tends to be the
more exotic and spicy of the two wines, with glorious fruit tones of black cherry, plum, blood orange often augmented by notes
of Gevrey’s grilled meat, chocolate and exotic spices. The Chambertin is typically the slightly slower wine to unfold, with a more
understated profile of plum, red cherry and strawberry, coupled with notes of cocoa powder, coffee, grilled meats and violets…
impeccably balanced, tangy and never come across as over-oaked. They are amongst the very greatest red wines to be found in the
world.

SPECIALIST’S CHOICE: LOT 151
I’ve had the good fortune of tasting the ’93 Musigny VV on many occasions over the years, most recently with a great friend in
Bordeaux – I can still vividly recall the layers upon layers of aromas that came pouring out of the bottle. Rustic yet feminine, this
wine has evoked many great memories for me over the years and just keeps getting better!” Christy Erickson
Comte Georges
de Vogüé
Delicate, feminine and fragrant, the epitome of finesse: lace, silk and taffeta; violets and dog-roses; raspberries and blackcurrants
with a finish of liquorice; amplitude and generosity; intensity without a trace of hardness. All this has been said by those attempting
to describe the taste of Le Musigny. Le Musigny consists of two sub-climats, Le Musigny itself and at the same altitude next door
to the south, Les Petits-Musigny. The lion’s share, more than seven hectares, almost seventy percent, and including the totality of
Les Petits-Musigny, belongs to the Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé. This estate proclaims itself the Domaine des Musigny. The
domaine also comprise 2.75 hectares of Bonnes Mares, located entirely in the southern, Chambolle end of the climat, sixty ares
of Amoureuses, 1.80 hectares of Premiers Crus (Baudes and Fuées) and a small parcel of village wine. Wines of the domaine are
defined as classy and fragrant, very exciting indeed. The domaine is in good hands. The future is bright.

ChÂteau Lafite Rothschild
For as long as anyone can remember Lafite has been the
most highly regarded wine in Bordeaux. From their very
first book, published in 1845, Cocks & Feret have listed
Lafite first, and it was ranked first in the famous 1855
classification of Bordeaux.
Fite is an old French term meaning small hill, rise or mound;
it is from this humble feature in Bordeaux’ somewhat bland
landscape that France’s most esteemed producer takes its
name. The château itself is one of the oldest in Bordeaux,
with much of it dating from the mid-sixteenth century. It was
purchased by the wealthy Ségur family in the seventeenth
century, but like much of the region at the time, the land
was used for a variety of farming.
Beginning in the 1670s, the Ségurs spent around twenty
years converting a large portion of the land to vineyards.
With Latour and Calon, as well as Lafite, under their
ownership, the Ségurs began to find a market for their wines
in London. It was first mentioned in the London Gazette in
1707 and soon became famous: by the early 1730s, it was a
favorite of the Prime Minister, Robert Walpole.
Lafite remained in the Ségur family until 1784. It was sold
several times, finally to Baron de Rothschild in 1868, by
which time there were some seventy-four hectares of vines.
It was a new era of industrial wealth and the Rothschild
purchase certainly added much celebrity to the area.

The Black Tie Collection
(Lots 239-365)
This selection represents a small portion of the holdings of a U.S. based longtime collector.
This gentleman and his wife have meticulously crafted their collection for years, seeking
expertise in regions, producers and vintages. They travel extensively and have had the good
fortune to visit some of their favorite producers throughout the years. They’re not drinking very
much these days and now are letting others enjoy the fruits of their collecting labor.
They purchased predominantly from New York City retailers, and there are very few, if any,
wines in this selection that were not purchased on release, or as futures. The wines have all
been meticulously stored. The greatest highlights are in Burgundy. DRC is in strong supply,
with OWCs of all vineyards, including assortments and Montrachet, and a large section of RC.
There’s Dugat and de Vogüé, Leflaive, Coche-Dury and Ramonet. The level of rarity here is
stunning, even in the world of fine wine auctions.
Though they are sad to see this tranche go, they toasted the departure

BURGUNDY
Domaine
de la
Romanée Conti
Simply put, Domaine de la Romanée Conti produces the most sought-after wine in Burgundy. They are the largest producer in
terms of Grand Cru ownership, and certainly one of the most famous. Today the estate is jointly owned by the de Villaine and Leroy
families, and administered by the Burgundian icon Aubert de Villaine. The vineyards are strictly organic and the Domaine also
practices certain elements of biodynamism. Regarding the role of the winemaker Aubert de Villaine says: “I believe that in Burgundy,
the talent – the talent which produces the great wine – is in the terroir. The reputation of the wine from Burgundy was made over
the past several centuries and it comes from the quality of wine that the particular terroir can provide. That is the talent. The role
of the winemaker is to enable the terroir to be in the best condition possible – to help bring forward the product of the exceptional
land. The role is to listen to the terroir…to understand what to do to achieve and equilibrium in the soil.”

SPECIALIST’S CHOICE: LOT 300
One of the greatest wine experience of my life was tasting all of the ‘09s in barrel, including the
2009 Romanée Conti. We were in the cellar of the Domaine for hours—Aubert blind tasted us
on some older bottlings, including an RC from my birth year, and then let me take the leftovers to
lunch. I haven’t had this wine since—a hint to whoever’s the lucky winner.” Charles Antin

I admit it. I’m guilty. I committed infanticide. TWICE! Once at a restaurant in Lyon last year where they had the 2009
Rousseau Chambertin on the menu for $350 Euros (you would have done it too) and another time at a generous collector’s home
in Portland who was up for some experimentation on the beauty of this young wine a month ago. Both times the wine showed
brilliantly though of course youthful: Intense and long with monumental potential. Buy now and hold for maximum pleasure
or join me in in the penalty box, I could use the company.” Jamie Pollack

Rarest Champagne from a New York City Cellar
(Lots 381-401)
It wouldn’t be an Evening Sale without the most celebratory wine out there: Champagne.
This consignor does things the right way, with some of the rarest and most meticulously
stored Champagne on the market today. Cristal from the ’79, ’90, ’82, and ’88 vintages
(including magnums), ’73 Dom Pérignon Oenothèque, exceptionally rare magnums of
Salon ’76, and more. Don’t miss the ’90 Chave Hermitage thrown in for good measure.
This consignor has been particularly generous with us over the years, and we’ve shared
many bottles from his pristine cellar. The exceptional quality of his storage and his
careful purchasing is manifested in the power and grace of the bottles he shares.

Perfectly Rare Burgundy and Bordeaux (Lots 402-412)
The lots in this consignment run the gamut—from the perfectly mature (and perfectly rare) ’85 Clos de Tart, ’85 DRC Echézeaux,
and ’90 Mugnier Musigny, to a pristine bottle of ’11 Romanée Conti, to a magnum of ’00 Mouton. They’ve all got one thing in
common, though, which is the care with which this collector assembled them over the years. Some were purchased from reputable
auction houses after a careful analysis of provenance, others—the Lafite, Mouton, and Romanée Conti—were bought on release.
The Dujac and Mugnier were part of a cellar purchase from a collector who had bought them on release. All stored in temperaturecontrolled storage until removed for this auction.

“
SPECIALIST’S CHOICE: LOT 444
Chevalier Montrachet from Domaine
Leflaive is consistently one of the best white
wines in the world. I can vouch for that
first hand after tasting the 2007. This wine
was so classy, it pairs perfectly with all 25
courses served to me at Blue Hill at Stone
Barns.” Stu Jakub

"This is really a lovely effort that is almost as powerful as
the Bâtard but as one would expect, finer and even a bit
longer with an almost painfully intense backend. A very
impressive effort...92-95." BH 7/09.

SPECIALIST’S CHOICE: LOT 446
Schrader Cabernet Sauvignon
Harlan produces the sort of wine that can
win over an avowed anti-Cali Cab drinker.
The balance and finesse matched to the
power and richness of these wines has no
equal. I personally feel there has never been
a poor quality wine produced at Harlan, in
any vintage.” Dan Stensland-Bos
