Thankful People Are Happy!
Thankful People Are Happy!
Winter
Edition
2015
During this time of year, with the days getting dark quickly, with the hustle and
bustle of the holidays, and with the feeling of more to do with less time
available, it may seem difficult to remain happy through all of it. It is at this
very time when it is best to remember...it is not happy people who are thankful,
it is THANKFUL people who are HAPPY!
With that said, please consider taking a few minutes each day to breathe and
think about your loved ones, friends, animals, memories, and the things you are
thankful for in your life. The more thankful you become, the happier you will be!
Here at Pet Friends, we are extremely thankful for
the adopters who welcomed our rescued cats and
dogs into their homes! We are very grateful for
the volunteers who dedicated their time to saving
our animals throughout the year!! And we are
indebted to the amazing people and businesses who
attended and donated (money, gifts, and time)
towards our fundraising events each year!!!
Thank you for another successful year rescuing animals in our community...we
are looking forward to working with all of you next year! Our cats and dogs are
HAPPY!!!
Holiday "Pet" Tips:
Be Careful with Seasonal Plants and Decorations
Oh, Christmas Tree: Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn't tip
and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. This will also prevent the tree
water—which may contain fertilizers that can cause stomach upset—from
spilling. Stagnant tree water is a breeding ground for bacteria. Your pet
could end up with nausea or diarrhea should he drink the water.
Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer
nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset
and cardiovascular problems. Many varieties of lilies can cause kidney
failure in cats if ingested. Opt for just-as-jolly artificial plants made from
silk or plastic or choose a pet-safe bouquet.
Tinsel-less Town: Kitties love this sparkly, light-catching "toy" that's easy
to bat around and carry in their mouths. But a nibble can lead to a
swallow, which can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting,
dehydration and possible surgery. It's best to brighten your boughs with
something other than tinsel.

Recap of Events
Pet Friends held a donation collection event at Sam's Club, Greensburg, on Saturday, September 26th
raising over $420. Volunteers Marjorie Boyle, Keirstin Rotharmel, Lisa Smith, Clair Vail, and Becky
Vallentine attended by collecting donations and letting people know about Pet Friends, Inc. We thank
Sam's Club and everyone for their kindness!
Pet Friends spent a lovely afternoon at Levin's, Rt. 22, in
Murrysville, on Saturday Sept 5th. Volunteers Stephanie
Flambard, Vickie Kasa, Faye Kuch, Pat Lydon, Dina Perri, the
late Jay Powell, Keirstin Rotharmel, Toni Secosky, Lisa Smith,
and Darlene Spigelski, all enjoyed kind hospitality from the
staff of Levin's and their kind customers. A number of dogs
also enjoyed a fun-filled day: Bolt, Daisy, Dustin, Lightning,
and Reggie. They were so well-behaved and very friendly to
everyone! It was a hot day but worth it.
Levin's donated the
hot dogs, buns, and
bottled water for Pet Friends to sell. Pet Friends also sold
magnets, t-shirts, dog treats, and received general donations. We
thank Levin's and everyone for their kindness!
Holiday "Pet" Tips Continued:
Wired Up: Keep wires, batteries and both glass and plastic
ornaments out of paws' reach. A wire can deliver a potentially
lethal electrical shock and a punctured battery can cause burns
to the mouth and esophagus, while shards of breakable
ornaments can damage your pet's mouth and digestive tract.
On Sunday, September 6th, Pet Friends partnered with Seven Fields
Entertainment for a Corbri
Woodstock Event in Gibsonia.
Pet Friends raised $525 from a
50/50 raffle. The event lasted
from Noon till 10pm and was a daylong celebration of family,
friendship, peace, and music.
We thank Seven Fields and
everyone for their kindness!
Page 3
On Sunday, September 13th, Pet Friends held its annual Volunteer
Picnic where volunteers come together to relax and talk about
adventures, families, and
animals. Although it was a
cooler, rainy, and windy
day, a number of
volunteers came to enjoy
the food (which was
donated by those
attending). We appreciate
all our volunteers and it was wonderful for us to have an
opportunity to spend quality time with each other.
Pet Friends took part in the annual Penn Twp Fall Festival on September 18th &
19th, raising over $170. Volunteers Janice Bowell, Marjorie Boyle, Annie
Ghinassi, Michele Kierski, Faye Kuch, Nancy Pekar, Keirstin Rotharmel, Lisa
Smith, Ruth Roberts, and Betsy Walter, helped to make this 2-day event funfilled with our dogs attending to welcome families to our booths to play games
and purchase some of our items.
Thank you to our volunteers and to
all who stopped by to visit us!
Pet Friends took part in Sample Norwin on Wednesday, September 23rd. Volunteers Pattie Gamble, Pat
Lydon, and Lisa Smith let our neighbors know about our animal rescue efforts, our fundraising events,
and our volunteer opportunities. We sincerely appreciate the $103 in donations from at this event.
Pet Friends continues to get cash donations from our volunteers and from the general public for
recycled aluminum cans and other metals. Since we are no longer able to accept physical donations,
kind people take their items to the recycle areas and then send the money to Pet Friends. Since we
began in 2003, we've received over $5,800 from recycled donations. A special Thank YOU goes out to
all the kind people who have made donations through recycled metals.
Holiday "Pet" Tips Continued:
That Holiday Glow: Don't leave lighted candles unattended. Pets may burn themselves
or cause a fire if they knock candles over. Be sure to use appropriate candle holders
placed on a stable surface. If you leave the room, put the candle out!

Committee Members, Charo Adamson, Stephanie Flambard, Annie Ghinassi, Pat
Lydon, Keirstin Rotharmel, Faye Kuch, Lisa Smith, Sally Todoric, Donna
Warhold, Betsy Walter, and Debbie Rosevitik. Additionally, the following

overwhelming success! We earned a

businesses through sponsorships. We also received donations of

volunteers, and businesses. Keirstin Rotharmel and Lisa Smith
donated the centerpieces and auctioned them off at the end of the
event. We had a record number of 56 gift baskets!
Carl and Diva Jones were the entertainers for the evening and everyone enjoyed their performance.
This is the second wine event they performed at for us.

moment of silence for him. At the table reserved for his family and friends,
an empty chair with a white ribbon was there, along with his picture on the

Memorials and Honors
In October, Pet Friends had to sadly say good bye
to one of our treasured volunteers.
John "Jay" Powell
Jay was very a special volunteer for us and a treasure to all the dogs he helped
find "furever" homes for. He was active at our kennel and our fundraising
actives. He loved animals and inspired everyone who knew him. There had to have
been a lot of dogs waiting to greet Jay as he crossed over the Rainbow Bridge!
He will be sorely missed.
Memorial donations for Jay were received from:
Sandra & Sam Anderson, Donna Droznek, Kathy Hickman, Lonnie Jantsch, the Moyer & Pavlakovic
families, Anna Marie Bertani, Barb Powell, Barry & Toni Secosky, John Johnston, Julie Bour, Margaret
Buettner, Ruth Golick, the Bakery Department of the Southside Giant Eagle, Thomas McConnell, Aunt
Mary Lou Bercik, Greg & Sally Powell, Patty Kochis, and the volunteers of Pet Friends, Inc.

It is getting colder outside,
which means you will need
to wear a big coat to stay
warm. Your pets can also
get cold easily. You want to
make sure you don't leave
your pet outside too long,
and if you have one for
them, put a coat on them.

Letters from our Alumni
Dear Pet Friends:
It is with ever growing sadness that I tell Pet Friends of the
passing of Duncan on September 21, 2015, who I adopted from
you in 2003. He was my companion, my buddy…my best friend. I
miss him terribly. RIP Duncan - you were the best.

Everett
A note from our volunteer Faye:
I remember Duncan so well. He was one of the first dogs adopted
through Pet Friends in 2003. K.C. Grapes fostered him and a UPS or
USPS employee saw him at her home when making deliveries and wanted
to adopt him. He was the first Boykin Spaniel I ever saw. He had a
loving, good life with that family.
Dear Pet Friends:
"Sweetie" is now in her teens and survived a near fatal spleen rupture in 2014. The love of her life is
food (and me) and she twirls and spins with joy at meal times. She brings so much happiness to my life.
Thank you, Eileen
Dear Pet Friends:
I just wanted to give you a brief update on Lily (formerly Haley). She
has been with us for four months now. What a joy she has been! She
has breathed new life into Bullet, my elderly Border Collie. Lily is
only 30 pounds but she's got the heart and energy of a Doberman.
The photo is her guarding her domain from chipmunks and squirrels.
I can't thank you enough for all the time and effort all of you give to
these homeless animals. Lily is another success story. She is very
loved.
Thanks again, Debbie
Dear Pet Friends:
Just wanted to let you know Grover is doing well. He hid under the bed the first day, but is now
roaming the house. He likes to look out the window and play with his toys. He is a little monster mash
- my hands and arms can prove it. His little claws are sharp. Has his first appointment at Banfield on
Monday the 9th which we will get his nails cut. He sleeps all day and want to be up playing at night. My
husband and I just love him. He is awesome. Thank you. I will get pictures soon and send in.
