We promote character development, community service, and the values of sustainability. We foster a love of learning while instilling academic excellence, artistic expression, athletic achievement and the skills necessary for success in the 21st century. This has been an incredible year for Maui Prep marked by several events that put our school in a position to sustain and grow towards a very bright future. The first event was receiving the deed to our land as the result of the incredible generosity of Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc. The second event was our successful re-accreditation by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) and the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC). This second accreditation will take us through the year 2015. These are major milestones for our young school. The past year was filled with many wonderful moments. Our second graduating class, comprised of thirteen students, accumulated offers of over $1.2 million in college scholarships from 37 colleges. Our Middle School Science Olympiad team won the State competition for the second year in a row, defeating larger schools including Punahou, on Oahu, for the opportunity to represent Hawaii at the National competition, and our Upper School History Day video team was also chosen to represent Hawaii at Nationals. Throughout the year, community service efforts engaged all of our students. Our student-athletes excelled, sending competitors to State competitions in boy’s cross country, swimming and tennis. In the arts, our students continued to delight us, performing like professionals in Cinderella and Willy Wonka and impressing us with the imaginative and beautiful artwork that they produced throughout the school year. This is but a small glimpse of our accomplishments this past year. The 2010-2011 school year marked our second year in the Schools of the Future initiative, funded by the Hawaii Community Foundation (HCF) to build upon our exemplary curriculum with a grant of $70,000. This large grant recognized Maui Prep among the 23 other Schools of The Future, establishing that we are one of the leading schools in Hawaii transforming the student experience by integrating technology with real world experiences through project-based learning. Our HCF Schools of the Future Grant for the new 2011-2012 school year is $63,500. Special thanks to each of you for your continued commitment to supporting our 'ohana school community. By sharing the Maui Prep story, introducing new families to our school community, volunteering your time, and donating generously time and time again, you make it possible for this special place to grow and thrive. We truly couldn’t do it without you. Mahalo nui loa, George C. Baker Headmaster 2010-2011 ‘O HANA G IVING R EPORT THE CLASS OF 2011 On May 27, 2011, Maui Preparatory Academy graduated its second class, the Class of 2011. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean just before a stunning Maui sunset, this amazing group of 13 seniors shared one of the biggest and proudest moments of their lives with the hundreds of friends and family in attendance. After a half hour of marvelous live entertainment by our talented Upper School Rock Band, the commencement ceremony began with a blessing from Kahu David Kapaku followed by Headmaster George Baker’s welcome address. It featured humorous and emotion-filled speeches by Valedictorian Sarafina Huck, Salutatorian Dino DeSalvio and the Commencement Address by Interim Middle and Upper School Principal Ryan Kirkham. Underclassmen Devon Bloss ’12 and Troy Otto ’13 beautifully performed the class song, How’s It Gonna Be, and senior Caitlyn Fisler sang One Moment in Time. Senior Zach Ferguson presented the Senior Class gift, a cement path around the Tom Rosenquist Memorial located near the dining hall. Senior Class Advisors Keenan Reader and Ray Parnell awarded the Faculty Merit Award to Sarafina Huck and, finally, accompanied by cheers from the audience, our thirteen graduates received their diplomas. The Class of 2011 earned acceptances at 37 colleges and received over $1.2 million in scholarValedictorian and Faculty Merit Award ship offers. Our love and congratulations go with Winner Sarafina Huck and mom, Erika the members of the Class of 2011. We will miss you! THE CLASS OF 2011 WILL BE ATTENDING THE FOLLOWING COLLEGES: Bentley College Lehigh University Santa Barbara City College Bond University Linfield College Texas Tech University Chapman University San Diego University University of Hawaii at Manoa Colorado University Boulder San Diego State University University of Hawaii Maui College Colorado State University 2011 Graduating Class ‘O HANA G IVING R EPORT 2010-2011 2010-2011 NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS National History Day Competition in D.C.! In the fall of 2010, Devon Bloss, Evan Blumer and Nathan O’Hanlon started working on their History Day project — a documentary about the American anti-imperialism movement at the turn of the last century. The project was well received at both the Maui and State competition and was eventually selected as one of the three documentaries to Seniors Nathan O'Hanlon, Evan Blumer, and represent Hawaii in the National Devon Bloss meet their former Maui Prep History teacher, Kelly Rodowsky, during their trip to competition. The team joined fifty other Washington, D.C. selected students from around Hawaii and traveled together to the University of Maryland campus. Upon their return, the students stated that this trip was one of the most memorable experiences in their high school careers. Through competition, cooperation, experience, and fun, the students learned that the History Day project is more than just a high school event; it prepares them for a future as professionals as well as shows our students the satisfaction that comes with hard work. Middle School Science Olympiad Team Wins Again! After placing first in the Maui Regional Tournament, three coaches and twelve Maui Prep Middle School students traveled to Oahu to participate in the Hawaii State Science Olympiad competition. Rainy weather did not dampen the team’s spirits as our students competed in twos and threes throughout the day in 12 events ranging from written tests on anatomy, fossils, Middle School Science Olympiad Team — or the solar system to hands on chemistry, 2011 State Champions electricity and bottle rocket events. At the end of the day, our team of twelve had accumulated 19 medals and placed FIRST IN THE STATE against 10 other teams, all from significantly larger schools! This is the second year running that Maui Prep’s Middle School Science Olympiad team has taken the State title. In May, the team traveled to the University of Wisconsin to compete against top science students from around the country. 2010-2011 ‘O HANA G IVING R EPORT ‘O HANA G IVING R EPORT 2010-2011 ANNUAL FUND DRIVE 2010-2011 To Our Maui Prep ‘Ohana, As we begin a new year, it is important to look back on our accomplishments. We are so overwhelmed by the generous support all of you gave in the 2010-2011 Annual Fund Drive. We were able to raise $171,000 for our children. We had 92% parent participation—a remarkable figure for private schools! And 93% of our faculty and 100% of our Board of Trustees participated! These figures are clear indicators of the level of commitment our ‘ohana has for this great school. We had a dedicated team of parent captains who kept us all on track. Our two amazing Chairpersons, Carlolyn Border, Parent Chair, and Pam Reader, Faculty Chair, provided their dedication and commitment to the drive and without their efforts and support, we could not have accomplished so much—thanks to both of you! It was our honor and privilege to be a part of the 2010-2011 “Growing Dreams” Annual Fund Campaign. We certainly feel we made a difference in the future of our school. As the dreams of our children grow so, too, must Maui Prep. Your continued support of this year’s campaign will make that happen. Please welcome Greg and Dana Howeth as the 2011-2012 Annual Fund Chairs. Their love and dedication to Maui Prep are well known and we are so happy to follow their lead into what is sure to be an even more successful year! Many thanks for a job well done! Boeing Corporation Maui Jim, Inc. 2010-2011 HIGHLIGHTS MPA Announces Pueo Pilot Scholarships Winners Maui Preparatory Academy is pleased to announce the recipients of The Pueo Pilot Scholarships, an innovative new merit scholarship developed to aid deserving students. The Pueo Pilot Scholarships winners are Sebastian Buenrostro (sophomore), Skyler Hirsch (sophomore), Danielle Jefferies (freshman) and Katharine Ornelas (sophomore). After completing the admissions process and comprehensive scholarship application, these students stood out among the many candidates. The scholarship recipients demonstrated leadership potential in academics and a desire to make a positive impact in other areas of Maui Prep including fine and performing arts, community service, athletics and student government. The Pueo Pilot Scholarship Program was developed by a group of donors that joined together to offer four full-tuition, four-year scholarships to Maui Prep for high school students entering 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade in the 2011-2012 school year. Pueo Pilot scholar Katharine Ornelas said, “This is a surreal opportunity and I am amazed and grateful that a group from the community cares enough about the education of four young adults to have made this possible.” Maui Prep Receives Deed to Campus Land After many years of tireless effort, MPA finally received a gift of 20.5 acres of land from Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc. The company made the commitment to Maui Prep Headmaster George Baker, former Board donate the land to the school in 2004, with President Scott Shoemaker, ML&P President & COO Ryan Churchill & former Maui Prep Foundation the final deed transfer taking place this President Tony Caputo at Deed Celebration past spring. The parcel of land encompasses the school’s current campus in Napili as well as additional acreage for future use. In his remarks, Headmaster George Baker said, “The story of Maui Prep would be very different if not for the extraordinary generosity of Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc. They have supported Maui Prep with the gift of this amazing campus and with significant financial contributions in the early years of our school. We, as a school community, will be forever grateful for this phenomenal support.” A cast plaque will be displayed in perpetuity on the Maui Prep campus in recognition of Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc.’s contributions to the school. Schools of the Future Based on our success in the first year, Maui Prep was deeply gratified to receive a second year grant of $70,000 from Hawaii Community Foundation to continue our work. During the past summer we have had the entire Lower School faculty work on project based learning; sent faculty to the mainland to explore robotics at Carnegie Melon, develop skills on film animation, become trainers in differentiated instruction; and developed the Moodle platform for course management. Our faculty will be travelling to other islands sharing their skills and project developments with other Hawaiian schools over the next school year as part of the Schools of the Future initiative. 2010-2011 ‘O HANA G IVING R EPORT ‘O HANA G IVING R EPORT 2010-2011 JINGLE BELL BALL 2010 The Fifth Annual Jingle Bell Ball (Imagine The Possibilities) was an amazing success. Maui Prep was and continues to be a beneficiary of AIM’s financial support. For the real estate community, Maui Prep has become an essential source for realtors to address their clients’ needs in education and community socialization in West Maui. The AIM program has also become a vehicle for the real estate community to exercise its philanthropic commitment to the community. Upon the successful purchase or sale of a property, AIM realtors have made gift donations to Maui Prep in the name of their clients. In some cases, this generous overture has resulted in realtor clients matching these donations! For more information on Maui Prep, the AIM program or to make a gift donation, please contact your REALTOR or Maui Preparatory Academy (MauiPrep.org).
