We promote character development, community service, and the values of sustainability. We foster a love of learning while instilling academic excellence, artistic expression, athletic achievement and the skills necessary for success in the 21st century. Aloha Maui Prep ‘Ohana, Congratulations for an incredible school year in 2011-2012, marked by the dedication of everyone in the Maui Prep ‘Ohana! I want to express my heartfelt thanks to each of you for your efforts in supporting the amazing development of our wonderful school as we grow and strive to enrich the lives of our students and the entire West Side of Maui. I attribute the incredible success of our fundraising efforts over the 20112012 school year to the outstanding leadership of our own Cathi Minami, Stacy Casco, Michele Pupunu and Board of Trustees and Development Committee Chair, Lisa Gibson. The results of our fundraising efforts are remarkable, especially when compared on a national scale. In its seventh year, the Maui Prep Fund continued to set new records in donor participation: 93% of our Parents, 100% of our Faculty & Staff and 94% of our Board of Trustees made gifts. I want to thank the stellar leadership of our volunteer Chairs, Dana and Greg Howeth and Kari and David Adams. Maui Prep continues to demonstrate the extraordinary level of dedication and support of the entire ‘Ohana, especially for a school of our size. By June 2012, the end of the school year, our donors contributed $173,532 in unrestricted gifts and $347,214 in restricted gifts. Additionally, we all send a heartfelt mahalo to Scott & Elaine Shoemaker for their tremendous generosity of a $250,000 cash donation to help pay down the principal on the school’s loan. Volunteer Chair, Corie Bluh, and her group of dedicated volunteer parents put together yet another amazing Jingle Bell Ball in December. This elegant and memorable event generated a tremendous amount of momentum within the community and with the help of our outstanding auctioneer, Maui Prep parent, Warren Gibson, we raised $127,261 for financial aid. The “Tom” Golf Scramble in the spring raised a record setting $58,877 as members of the community-at-large dedicated themselves to sustaining the remarkable efforts of Tom Rosenquist, a school founder, past Board President, loving father and philanthropist. The “Tom” was such a huge success due to the leadership team of Board of Trustees Volunteer Chairs Tom Donovan and Chuck Bergson. All told, Maui Prep’s fundraising efforts in 2011-2012 raised a total of $956,844…and this was in the midst of a most challenging economy… wow! The 2011-2012 school year marked the continued development of Maui Prep as we graduated 14 students in the Class of 2012. Our founding 6th grade class in 2005 was sent off to college this summer after receiving a total of 57 college acceptances and were offered almost $1.2 million dollars in scholarships and grants. Maui Prep was honored to receive the Schools of the Future grant in the amount of $75,000 from the Hawaii Community Foundation for the fourth year in a row. This was the highest grant awarded to any school in the entire state. Maui Prep continues to receive accolades from around the state for becoming a school leader within Hawaii for our innovative ways of integrating technology, project- based learning and 21st century skills into our program. Maui Prep placed second in the Middle School Science Olympiad State competition after again winning the Maui Regional Competition. We provided 18 of the 30 students from Maui to compete in the State National History Day competition and we won the State National History Day video competition. In MIL sports, we sent athletes to State Championships in Cross Country, Swimming and Track & Field. We also had our first State HHSAA Champion as freshman, Danielle Jefferies, dominated the 100 Butterfly. The Maui Prep tradition of dramatic excellence continued with Vania Jerome’s outstanding productions in our Lower School with “A Year with Frog and Toad” and the Middle and Upper School rendition of “Broadway Review.” There are many apparent signs that Maui Prep continues to grow and develop. The 2011-2012 school year began with record enrollment and grew throughout the year. We initiated our Strategic Plan (2013-2018), which serves as our road map for the future of Maui Prep. And finally, Maui Prep began our first Master Campus Plan (2013-2033), ensuring that Maui Prep will be a part of the west side community for years to come. 2011-2012 was an exceptional school year because of the combined efforts of our stellar faculty and staff, parents, volunteers, donors and trustees. Every part of our ‘Ohana played an important role in our success. With this solid foundation we can now look forward to another terrific year. Mahalo, George C. Baker, Head of School 2011-2012 ‘O HANA G IVING R EPORT ‘O HANA G IVING R EPORT 2011-2012 THE CLASS OF 2012 2011-2012 HIGHLIGHTS Danielle Jefferies Wins Gold and is named Maui’s MIL Female Swimmer of the Year At twilight, on May 25, 2012, Maui Preparatory Academy graduated its third class, the Class of 2012. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, as the sunset was giving a spectacular show, this amazing group of 14 seniors shared one of the biggest and proudest moments of their lives with hundreds of friends and family in attendance. After a half hour of marvelous, live entertainment by our very own and talented “7AM” Band, the Commencement Ceremony began with a blessing from Kahu David Kapaku, followed by Headmaster George Baker’s welcome address. The ceremony featured humorous and emotion-filled speeches by Valedictorian Devon Bloss and Salutatorian Nathan O’Hanlon. Senior Class advisors, Ryan Kirkham and John Deal, gave the Commencement Address at the request of the graduating class. Senior Class President Serena Motelewski presented the Senior Class gift, a hand-crafted wooden sign demarcating the parking spot for the “Senior Citizen of the Month.” Advisor Ryan Kirkham awarded the Faculty Merit Award to graduating Senior Cali Minami and finally, accompanied by cheers from the audience, our fourteen graduates received their diplomas. The Class of 2012 earned acceptances at a total of 76 colleges and received over $1.1 million in scholarship and grant offers. Our love and congratulations go with the members of the Class of 2012. We will miss you! THE CLASS OF 2012 WILL BE ATTENDING THE FOLLOWING COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES: • Chapman University • Flagler College • Marist College • Pepperdine University • Santa Barbara City College • Stetson University • University of Hawaii, Maui College • University of Miami • University of Oregon • University of Redlands • Utah State University • Whittier College Devon Bloss, 2012 Valedictorian On February 11, Maui Prep freshman Danielle Jefferies made history: she became the first Maui Prep State Champion. Jefferies entered the preliminary round of the OC16 HHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships seeded number one in the state for the 100-yard butterfly and did not relinquish Coach Heather O’Moore, Colleen Jefferies (Danielle’s that top spot through either the qualifying Mom), Danielle Jefferies, Coach Mike Ritter and Maui or the final race. At the MIL Championships, Prep Athletic Director Ryan Kirkham Jefferies swam her event in a then seasonlow time of 58.74 seconds. In the qualifier, she bested her time and the rest of the field with 58.19 seconds. With swimmers from Seabury Hall and Punahou rounding out the top three qualifiers, Jefferies took the lead a the 25-yard mark and left everyone else in a fight for second place. Jefferies finished with a 57.81, a full 1.5 seconds faster than her closest competitor. Freshman Danielle Jefferies was named the MIL Female Swimmer of the Year. Science Olympiad Scores Big at State Competition Maui Prep's 2012 Science Olympiad Team finished in 2nd place at this year's state championships. Maui Preparatory Academy’s Science Olympiad team once again dominated on a state level. Our small school, with a team of mostly new members, scored 2nd place coming in closely behind Iolani School of Oahu. Middle School Science Olympiad Team Team members practiced daily to 2012 Maui County Champions prepare for the competition. Students were busy creating testable models, collecting and interpreting data, cooperatively studying, experimenting and researching. Coaches Carrie DeMott, Chris Border, and Krishna Narayan facilitated the processes by providing practice tests, materials, and guidance. The kids had a great time at the competition at Leeward Community College and exploring the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Our young team had ten new students this year with only five returning members. Students enjoyed their trip to Oahu which included some exciting educational tours. 2011-2012 ‘O HANA G IVING R EPORT ‘O HANA G IVING R EPORT 2011-2012 2011-2012 HIGHLIGHTS Maui Prep Awarded Maximum Award for Schools of the Future If you have been involved with Maui Prep for the past two or three years, you may have noticed a change in vocabulary amongst our faculty. Terms like “21st-century education” and “project-based learning (PBL)” have become commonplace in classrooms, faculty meetings, assemblies, and PTSO gatherings. These educational shifts reflect both the need to prepare students for the dynamic changes in the world culture and economy, driven largely by technology, as well as current educational research showing that applied learning models with higher levels of student driven inquiry yield far greater engagement and long term retention of learning. In many ways, this movement started when Maui Prep was awarded a “Schools of the Future” grant from Hawaii Community Foundation (HCF) in conjunction with the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) in the 2009-2010 school year. Thanks to the hard work of the faculty, administration, and especially our Director of Technology, Mr. Branden Hazlet, Maui Prep has since been awarded this grant in each the 20102011, 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years as we continue to develop and modify our curriculum. Based upon our school’s success we were awarded the maximum award amount of $75,000 for First grade students and their spare parts robot. the 2012-2013 school year. With 92% of our parents giving (a phenomenal figure for private schools), 100% of faculty/staff and 92% of Board of Trustees giving, we were able to raise $168,732! This level of giving is a tremendous reflection of the commitment everyone has for our children and Maui Prep! It goes without saying that this could not have been achieved without a dedicated and committed team of captains who kept our Maui Prep Fund Drive on track. Special thanks and appreciation go to David and Kari Adams, our Parent Chairs, Ray Parnell, our Faculty/ Staff Chair, Kenneth C. Stevens Jr., Grandparents Chair, and Betty Fisler, Alumni Chair who all provided their time and energy to making this drive a success. We are truly proud to be part of such an amazing group of parents, faculty/staff and Board of Trustees who feel so passionate about the school and its future! It has been our honor to chair the 2011-2012 “Together we are soaring to build bright futures through the Maui Prep Fund” campaign and we look forward to many more years of having Maui Prep be such a wonderful part of all our children’s lives! Thanks again for your participation and please join us in welcoming Paula Lair and Cliff Smith as the 2012-2013 Maui Prep Fund Chairs. Through their leadership, we are confident the 2012-2013 Annual Fund Drive will be another success! This donation from the Shoemakers was the final piece in the refinancing and restructuring of Maui Preparatory Academy’s start-up debt, which also included the Shoemakers pledging a $1M loan to the school. This was a critical piece of the school’s plan for financial sustainability. "It gives me great pleasure to see how far our school has come. It has far exceeded our original vision," Scott said, in front of the entire school community of parents, faculty, staff and all students. Rocky Chenille, representing the Hilo Office of the USDA, George Baker, Headmaster-Maui Prep, Elaine & Scott Shoemaker THE ALLIANCE TO IMPROVE MAUI Alliance to Improve Maui (AIM) was started by a group of West Maui Realtors to support targeted West Maui non-profits that are focused on addressing critical community enhancements. The group chose Maui Prep as its first recipient and pledged to raise $1.5 million for the school. Members then agreed to donate a portion of their commissions on the sales of designated AIM property listings to the school. The original group of ten Realtors has since expanded to include other realtors, mortgage companies and friends of AIM, whose combined gifts have been a major source of support for our young school. 2011-2012 TOTAL AIM DONATIONS: $16,745.63 DONORS: Raymond S.F. Chin & Joline Dorner MPA ANGELS As we continued on our path of financial growth and development, this group of loyal and generous Maui Prep supporters stepped forward in 2011 to ensure the health and viability of the school by personally loaning or paying down a maturing bank loan. He was the ultimate “can do” guy who inspired all of us to dream big, work hard and never, ever, give up. Tom was a passionate supporter of Maui Prep. When a job needed to be done, he was the first to show up. Tom led by example, whether by digging ditches, leading pre-opening tours of the school, negotiating deals or writing checks. In just four years, Tom Rosenquist gave more than $1 million in gifts to Maui Prep and inspired others to give more generously than they ever believed they could. Each spring we honor Tom’s legacy at the annual Tom Rosenquist Legacy Golf Tournament. This year we raised $58,877 for our students.
