Where the Rivers
MEET THE ROAD
Head out to where the Rivers Meet the Road for a fall adventure on
the 33-mile stretch of the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic
Byway. It’s the most scenic drive in the Midwest.
From stunning fall color drives to a jaunt out into the apple orchard,
an authentic autumn experience is waiting for you from Alton to Grafton.
This drive is one of the most beautiful sections of the entire Great River
Road.
By mid-October, the luscious greens of summer will vanish, making way
for the luminous hues of fall, rippling across the trees in shades of yellow,
orange and red. With the crunch of leaves underfoot, visitors can wind
their way along hiking and biking trails to enjoy the surroundings of the
nature preserves and parks along the byway. Take a wagon ride out
into the fields to pick apples or hunt for the perfect pumpkin. Or, simply
stroll the streets of our river towns shopping, dining and enjoying the
local flavors at unique fall festivals.
This is the place to be for a great fall weekend getaway with scenic
beauty, fiery fall colors and great festivals all autumn long. Plan your
fall trip at VisitAlton.com!

Spirits of Alton
WHY IS ALTON HAUNTED?
Many blame limestone rock for so much paranormal activity in
Alton. Most of Alton either sits on limestone or has neighborhoods
with houses built with pieces of limestone. It is this limestone that
is said to retain the psychic residue of events that can still be
experienced today.
Our Favorite Haunts
First Unitarian Church, 110 E. Third St., Alton
In 1934, the church’s pastor committed suicide in the building and if scores of first-hand
accounts are to be believed, he has simply never left. There is no location more unsettling
on our tours, nor one that has sent as many guests running out of the building
- Troy Taylor, Alton Hauntings Tours
Milton School, 1320 Milton Road, Alton
The tragic tale of the school involves the unsolved mystery of a young girl murdered, a janitor
who committed suicide in the school and the negativity that can still be
felt today. – Marlene Lewis, Alton Haunted Odyssey
Mineral Springs Hotel
301 E. Broadway St., Alton
One of the favorites is the “Jasmine Lady,”
