SHRUTI CASE - Kidnap or love story?
S
hruti's 'abduction' is turning out to
be a case of a love story gone awry
with investigations as well as the
stand taken by Shruti indicating she is
very much in love with her 'abductor'
Nishan and is doing her best to 'save' him
from punishment.
Police sources said Nishan had
broken down after being nabbed from the
Baga beach in Goa. He was in tears even
during his flight back to Delhi.
Shruti, on the other hand, put up a fight at the beach. She
refused to get herself medically examined or board the flight to
Delhi. Shruti is quoted as having told the police: "How can I leave
him? I have to stay with him. I have to save him."
On her return to Faridkot, she refused to go back to her parent's
home or undergo a medical examination, thereby weakening the
prosecution's case. Police investigation has so far suggested that
it is a case of a love story gone awry due to objections from the

Latest reports say that Mumbai Police has registered yet another
shocking case of crime related to the world of glitz and crime.
A 23-year-old model, Bidushi
Dash Barde, was found murdered
in her apartment in Andheri on
Monday. Bidushi, who belonged
from Chennai, was at home alone
on the ill-fated day when her
husband Kedar Barde, a software
engineer found her lying in a
pool of blood at their residence.
Initially, Mumbai police had
registered a case of accidental
death but on discovering
wounds on her body and based
on the postmortem reports, they
re-registered it as a case of
murder. Talking to a source Additional Commissioner Vishwas
Nangre-Patil said, "A female resident of the building has told us that
she clearly saw a visitor at Bidushi's door. Based on her statement
and the nature of injuries sustained by Bidushi, we have registered
a case of murder on Tuesday."
The police said, "Kedar noticed that the lights were switched off but
the television set was on. He then came across Bidushi's bloodsplattered body in the passage between the bathroom and the
bedroom. A glass shelf was lying broken near her and glass shards
were found protruding from Bidushi's cheek, jaw, neck and chin.
There were also fingernail marks on her face as well as head injuries."
Bidushi's father said that his daughter was very happy in Mumbai
and had never fought with anyone. So he wondered what might
have led to the murder. We hope police get to crack the case soon!
girl's family.
Nishan, a dropout from Lawrence
School, Sanawar, used to follow Shruti, who
belonged to a middle-class family, on her
way to school. Their friendship soon
developed to the extent that he used to drive
Shruti to and from St Mary's Convent
School in Faridkot, say sources.
The friendship was not liked by Shruti's
parents, which prompted Shruti and Nishan
to leave their home in June, sources add.
They lived in Kharar for over a month, posing as husband
and wife. Shruti was recovered by the police and handed over to
her parents, but their affair did not end there.
Nishan gave up eating for several days, forcing his mother to
visit Shruti's parents and offer a matrimonial alliance between the
two.
Police sources said Shruti's abduction happened three days
after her parents refused the offer.

ore than 200 languages were repor ted in the 2011
Census of Population as a home language or mother
tongue. One-fifth of Canada's population, or nearly
6,630,000 people, spoke a language other than English or
French at home in 2011, either alone or in some combination
with English or French.
Of this total, 6,390,000 spoke an immigrant language at home,
more than 213,000 people spoke an Aboriginal language, and
nearly 25,000 repor ted using a sign language.
Also of this total, almost one-third or 2,145,000 people repor ted that the only language they spoke at home was a language other than English or French, that is, a non-official language. The remaining two-thirds spoke a non-official language
in combination with either English or French.
The 2,145,000 people who spoke only a non-official language
accounted for 6.5% of the population, unchanged from 2006.
In total, 58.0% of the population or 19,225,000 spoke only
English at home, while 18.2% or 6,043,000 spoke only French.
Both propor tions were down slightly from 2006.
The use of multiple languages at home has increased. In 2011,
11.5% of the population repor ted using English and a language
other than French, up from 9.1% in 2006.
Similarly, 1.3% of the population repor ted using French and a
language other than English in 2011, up from 1.0%. Most of
these people lived in Quebec.
The home languages showing the strongest growth between
2006 and 2011 were primarily Asian. The population that repor ted speaking the Philippine-based language Tagalog increased by 64%, the highest growth.
Nearly 279,000 people repor ted speaking Tagalog most of ten
in 2011, up from 170,000 five years earlier.
Seven other language groups also saw their numbers increase
by more than 30%. They included Mandarin (+50%), Arabic
(+47%), Hindi (+44%), Creole languages (+42%), Bengali
(+40%), Persian (+33%), and Spanish (+32%).
Four languages showed a slight decline in the number of people
who repor ted speaking them most often at home. Three of
them, Italian, Polish and Greek, are spoken for the most par t
by early immigrant groups and their descendants.

TRIBUTE: KING
OF ROMANCE
LEAVES A VOID IN
BOLLYWOOD
Yash Chopra's last journey
F
ollowing the demise of legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra on
Sunday evening, a pall of gloom descended upon the entire
film industry. The iconic director, who had just turned 80 on
September 27, and was eagerly awaiting the release of his last
directorial Jab Tak Hai Jaan, died, literally speaking, with his boots
on; something he had always wanted during his lifetime.
At around 9pm on Sunday, the late movie mogul was ferried in
an ambulance from Lilavati Hospital to Studio 3 of Yash Raj Studios.
Incidentally, this was the same place where he had announced his
retirement last month while revisiting his film journey with Shah
Rukh Khan. Immediate family and friends of the late Yash Chopra,
which included Karan Johar, Rani Mukerji, Amitabh Bachchan and
Shah Rukh Khan stayed by his side throughout the night of Sunday.
In fact, Shah Rukh, who had been one of the first ones to reach
Lilavati Hospital after hearing news of his passing away, did not
leave the late Chopra's side till around 5'o'clock on Monday morning.
Amitabh Bachchan too was there for the longest time.
Between 9am and 12pm yesterday, the filmmaker's friends and
almost the whole film fraternity dropped by at the studio to pay their
last respects. Among those who came were Rekha, Aishwarya Rai
Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Mukesh Bhatt, Pankaj Kapoor with his wife
and son Shahid, Sohail Khan and wife, Sunil Shetty, Arjun Rampal
and wife, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka
Chopra, Imran Khan with wife Avantika, Tabu, David Dhawan with
his son Varun, Kajol, Prakash Jha and Subhash Ghai.
Thereafter, at around 2.10pm, the body was carried from the
studio to the Pawan Hans crematorium in Juhu, with Uday Chopra
sitting next to the driver. Shah Rukh, Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra
were in the same ambulance along with Uday while Rani's car followed
closely behind them.
A separate bus was also hired to take the entire YRF staff and
others from the studio to the cremation ground. There was tight
security to ensure no untoward incident happened. The ambulance
reached Pawan Hans with the traffic police and security keeping a
strict vigil. Outside the studio and the cremation ground, a huge
crowd had gathered for a final glimpse of one of the industry's most
celebrated directors. One who taught the masses how to love and
portrayed romance like no other in the business.
Tribute: King of romance leaves a void in Bollywood Sameera's Chakravyuh item
A
legendary filmmaker, Yash Chopra changed the face of romance in Hindi cinema to become a brand in Bollywood with numerous
hits under his belt in his five-decade long illustrious career. Chopra(80), who was one of the pillars in Bollywood, directed some of
Indian cinema's most successful and iconic films, including the action
thriller "Deewar" which established megastar Amitabh Bachchan as the "angry
young man". The hit duo of Chopra and Bachchan worked together again in
romantic drama "Kabhi Kabhie" and drama "Trishul". If Shah Rukh Khan is called
the King, Chopra was definitely the kingmaker and gave support and fillip to
many an artiste's career and making them into superstars. Although he began his
career making different kinds of films, Chopra is today known mostly for the
romantic films like 'Silsila', 'Chandni' and 'Dilwale Duhania Le Jayenge'.
The term 'Yash Chopra romance' is used to typify the kind of romantic films the
filmmaker gave birth to in Bollywood. Considered among one of the greatest
filmmakers in the history of Hindi cinema, Chopra's career has spanned over five
decades and over 50 films. Beginning his career as an assistant director, Chopra
made his directorial debut with "Dhool Ka Phool" in 1959, a melodrama about
illegitimacy. Chopra has won several film awards, including six National Film Awards
and eleven Filmfare awards including four Filmfare Award for Best Director. Encouraged by the success of his films, the Chopra brothers
made several more movies together during the late 50s and 60s. Chopra rose to fame in 1965 after the commercially and critically successful
drama, "Waqt", which pioneered the concept of multi-starrers in Bollywood.

Happy New Year. It is

as one of her most

fact is that there will be
not just one but five

And while Farah is searching for suitable faces, buzz is that she has roped in Boman Irani
to play one of the four characters. Farah in an exclusive chat spilled the beans about the
film. She says, "I am done with the scripting of the film. We are in the pre-production stage
and will soon be flying to Dubai for seeing some locations. This film is going to be bigger
than Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om." On being probed about the cast of the film, she
says, "Shah Rukh Khan has been finalised as the male lead.

BRAND IPL IS HERE TO STAY, SAYS SRK
MUMBAI/BUREAU NEWS: Despite the myriad controversies surrounding the Indian Premier League,
with the latest being the termination of Deccan Chargers' franchise, Shah Rukh Khan is optimistic that
the events will have no negative impact on brand IPL. "When you create a brand like this (IPL) where highlevel cricket is being played, you got to have strict rules... Some of the things that have happened with
Deccan Chargers are unfortunate and more so
because it was because of their other businesses
and not cricket. I will miss Ram, Gayatri and her mom
who are huge cricket fans," Khan said. For all
franchises in the IPL, the stakes are high as the
tournament is the highest-paying domestic T20 event
in the world. Could the wobbling economy and the
growing skepticism on the back of such controversies
leave the sponsors jittery? The Kolkata Knight Riders
(KKR) co-owner refuted, saying: "I don't think it will
affect the brand. Every year there are media speculations
about sponsor issues and falling TRPs, but all teams will have logos and we'll get the money and people will
come to watch IPL." "This has been talked about from the second year that it's (IPL) going to die like my
stardom. But it goes on and will go on. IPL is an exclusive club in a country of one billion people with just
8 to 10 members. Cricket is the most watched game and gets the maximum eyeballs," he added. Shah Rukh
also denied buying stakes in any other team. "I don't have any other sports team. People come and meet
and we discuss to see how sports can be promoted vis-a-vis me. All I own is KKR, that's it," he said.

IT co-operation between Canada and India
will grow: Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM
TORONTO: Canada and India
enjoy a special relationship that
will get better when the free trade
agreement will be signed next
year, Som Mittal, President,
India’s National Association of
Software
and
Services
Companies (NASSCOM) said
Thursday.
He was addressing a
reception hosted by the IndoCanada Chamber of Commerce
(ICCC) in downtown Toronto
that
brought
together
professionals and entrepreneurs
primarily from the information
technology sector. Mrs. Preeti
Saran, Consul General of India
in Toronto was the guest of the
honour at the reception.
“We are here to offer
opportunities for partnership.
Today,
the
world
is
interconnected and one can’t
gain at the cost of another. It has
to be a win-win for all,” Mr.
Mittal emphasized in the context
of the bilateral relations between
Canada and India.
Elaborating on the state of
the Indian economy, the
NASSCOM President said the
India growth story would
continue despite the present
slowdown which was a fallout of
the global recessionary trends.
“There is a shift in our
economy and there are some
global economic issues so our
growth is slowing down but in
the last two months, path
breaking announcements have
put us back on track,” Mr. Mittal
said. Naval Bajaj, President,
Indo-Canada Chamber of
Commerce (ICCC) in his
Presidential remarks, welcomed
Mr. Mittal. He said, “Som Mittal
is an institution by himself. He
is a technocrat with a heart and
the epitome of the new face of
rising India. He is playing a key
role to enable NASSCOM realize
its
strategic
vision
of
‘Transforming Business and
Transform India’.”
Advocating
intense
collaboration between ICCC and
NASSCOM, to create synergies
in the IT sector, Mr. Bajaj said
that the vast potential in the twoway trade between our countries
is as yet unrealized, especially in
the non-traditional sectors such
the IT sector, even though it is
growing in significance. “It will
depend upon organizations such
as ours to work with the
governments to turn the growth
potential into reality because
governments can only create the
right atmosphere and define the
parameters of cooperation,
finally it is businesses that have
to trade and it is people and
companies that have to invest.”
The ICCC President said that the
Chamber has “identified IT as an
important sector of focus” for
the forthcoming India Mission
2013 in January. In her remarks,
Consul General Preeti Saran
lauded ICCC's efforts over the
years and said that it was in
recognition of the Chamber's
achievements in fostering
bilateral relations between
Canada and India, and creating
opportunities for the Indian
Diaspora in Canada that the
Government of India honoured
it with the Pravasi Bharatiya
Samman Award in January 2012.

PRIME MINISTER
HARPER TO VISIT
INDIA IN NOV
TORONTO: Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced
that he will travel to India from November 3-9, 2012. He will be
accompanied by Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and
Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, Joe Oliver, Minister of
Natural Resources, Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood, Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), and Tim Uppal,
Minister of State (Democratic Reform), along with representatives
of the business and cultural sectors.
"Canada enjoys a strong working and personal relationship with
India but we must further strengthen the links between our two
countries," said the Prime Minister. "India is a growing economy
with enormous potential, and expanding our trade and investment
links with India will create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity
here in Canada."
During his visit the Prime Minister will meet with Manmohan
Singh, Prime Minister of India, and other ministers and officials
from the Indian government. He will also address the World
Economic Forum on India, an independent international
organization committed to improving the state of the world by
engaging business, political, academic and other leaders.
Trade between India, one of the fastest growing economies, and
Canada is increasing. The strength of the ties between the two
countries is also reflected in the estimated 1 million Canadians of
Indian origin and that more than 23,000 Indian students are
currently studying in Canada, making India the second-largest
source of foreign students to Canada.
This will be Prime Minister Harper's second official visit to India.
He will visit Agra, New Delhi, Chandigarh and Bangalore.
Mysterious investors

share ‘fake’ addresses
NEW YORK: Former Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta, 63,
was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday by a Manhattan
federal court for insider trading. He will also have to pay a $5 million
fine. The verdict was a semi-victory for Gupta and legions of his
supporters who had fought hard and long to get him a lenient sentence.
Prosecutors had been seeking 10 years in prison for Gupta passing on
illegal tips, while his own lawyers argued he should get probation and
community service because he didn't actually profit from the crimes.
Rajat Gupta: "History is full of examples of good men who do bad
things."
Gupta's sentence is in line with more moderate prison terms handed
down by Judge Rakoff in other recent insider trading cases. The judge
summarised how most people view Gupta who rose swiftly through the
ranks of corporate America and gave back generously to the world.
'A good man'
"I think the record, which the government really doesn't dispute,
bears out that he is a good man," said Judge Rakoff during the hearing.
"But the history of this country and the history of the world, I'm afraid,
is full of examples of good men who do bad things," added the judge.
Gupta is scheduled to report to prison on 8 January 2013. He was also
ordered to pay a $5 million fine. He would face one year of supervised
release after finishing his prison term. Gupta, who was convicted in
June of three counts of securities fraud relating to tips about Goldman
and one count of conspiracy, didn't trade or profit from passing secrets
he learned, while serving on the board of directors of Goldman Sachs,
to Raj Rajaratnam, the founder of hedge fund Galleon. One of the
allegations made against Gupta is that following a Goldman board
meeting on 23 September 2008, he informed Rajaratnam that
billionaire investor Warren Buffett was going to make a $5 billion
investment in Goldman.
Citi CEO Vikram Pandit quits abruptly, shocks financial world
NEW YORK: Vikram Pandit, the Nagpur-born CEO of Citigroup Inc., abruptly resigned on Tuesday after nearly five years at the helm
of the world's largest financial services network. The resignation, which came just a day after the firm reported stronger-thanexpected Q3 earnings, sent shock waves through the financial world. No reasons were cited, but Citigroup's board said Pandit had
stepped down as CEO effective immediately, and he would be replaced by the head of the bank's European and Middle Eastern
division, Michael L Corbat. In a pro-forma departing statement, Pandit was quoted as saying "given the progress we have made in the
last few years, I have concluded that now is the right time for someone else to take the helm at Citigroup", and that he "could not be leaving
the company in better hands". Pandit, who was credited with pulling Citigroup out of terminal decline after he was unexpectedly thrust into
the top position in 2007 just before the financial crisis hit, is the son of a pharma representative and businessman. Vikram Shankar Pandit
came to the US when he was only 16 for undergraduate studies at Columbia University, home to several prominent Indian academics,
including economist Jagdish Bhagwati, philosopher Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, and also alma mater of Dr B R Ambedkar. He earned a
bachelor's degree and a master's degree in electrical engineering before switching to finance and earning a Ph.D.
MUMBAI: Even as BJP president Nitin Gadkari has denied
allegations of murky financial dealings and existence of shell
companies among investors of Purti Group, skeletons keep
tumbling out. According to records with the Registrar of
Companies, three major shareholders of the group — Vidya
Buildcon Private Ltd, Sanobar Infrastructure Private Ltd and
Roller Multitrade Private Ltd — are registered in an office situated
on the second floor of Shree Niwas House on Hazarimal Somani
Marg in Fort, Mumbai. When TOI visited the site on Monday, it
found that the office was the headquarters of various companies
belonging to the Somani Group which is a well-known business
group. Members of the Somani family and their employees present
in the premises denied any knowledge regarding these firms.
TOI also learnt that Gujarat Composite Ltd also operated from
this office. Pradeep Vyas, a manager with Gujarat Composite Ltd,
admitted that he had consented to the use of the office's address
for these firms. Vyas clarified that the Bangar Group had nothing
to do with the firms and that he had allowed the use of the
address on the request of his "friend" Chandrasekhar Sarda,
who is a chartered accountant. Sarda, when contacted, said he
was in Kolkata. When asked about the owners and the directors
of these firms, Sarda said these were investors based in Kolkata.
"We liaison for them for ROC requirements," he said. While
claiming that the firms had not made any investments in the last
two-three years, he said the firms did hold equity in the Purti
Group. Sarda also made similar revelations for two other share
holders — Ananthika Infrastructure Pvt Ltd and Cathy
Infrastructure Private Ltd — shown registered at Motilal Wadia
Building on SA Brelvi Road in Fort, Mumbai.
Dinesh D'Souza, anti-Obama film maker, quits over marital caper
WASHINGTON/BUREAU NEWS: American liberals are chortling
in delight over the discomfiture in right-wing circles arising from the
extra-marital caper of an Indian-American ultraconservative whose
hatchet job on President Barack Obama has become one of the topgrossing documentaries of all time. Dinesh D'Souza, a Mumbai-born
academic, whose movie Obama: 2016 has grossed nearly $34 million
and pitchforked him into the limelight in a heated election season,
resigned as President of King's College earlier this week, after
allegations marital impropriety.
According to conservative critics who evidently fell out with
him, D'Souza recently attended a Christian conference in South
Carolina in the company of another woman and introduced her as
his fiancee, even though he was still legally married to another woman.
The magazine which ''broke'' the ''story'' also alleged that D'Souza
shared a room with her in a hotel during the conference, a change
that he has vehemently denied and claimed to have receipts for two
separate rooms. Under any other circumstances, the whole affair
would have been received with a shrug if not laughed off altogether,
but D'Souza's Christian evangelism and his hatchet job of President
Obama has so irked liberals that they have received and relayed this
tale of extra-marital imprudence with great relish.
''As an atheist, I find it very awkward to see that my prayers for
Dinesh D'Souza's public humiliation have apparently been
answered,'' tweeted one critic. ''Ah, The Glass House,'' said Keith
Olbermann, a political commentator on MSNBC known to skewer
conservatives. D'Souza meantime has offered tortured explanations,
saying he ''had no idea that it is considered wrong in Christian circles
to be engaged prior to being divorced, even though in a state of
separation and in divorce proceedings."
According to the expose though, he filed for divorce the day
the journal which eventually ran the story phone him to seek his
comments on the incident.

affair," D'Souza explained that he and Denise Joseph were engaged,
and he had met her only three months ago after he had separated
from wife Dixie D'Souza more than two years ago. ''Obviously I would
not have introduced Denise as my fiance at a Christian apologetics
conference if I had thought or known I was doing something wrong,''
he said, adding, much to the mirth of his detractors, that '''as a result
of all this, and to avoid even the appearance of impropriety, Denise
and I have decided to suspend our engagement.''

When expensive favours from friends go too far
Chetan Bhagat
I
t is not illegal to have friends. It is not illegal to help a friend
either. Indian culture encourages that. Help can be transactional,
where both sides simultaneously do things for each other. It can
also be one-sided, with only one party doing the other a favour.
That isn't illegal and is common amongst friends.
Why then has the country come up in arms against Robert
Vadra? Why does it give people a sick-in-the-gut feeling when
hearing about his 600-fold increase in wealth in the last couple of
years? Why are so many people angry over him buying luxury
apartments, hotel stakes and land, offered as sweet deals from a
friend called DLF?
The India Against Corruption (IAC) has done a gutsy and
commendable job in bringing these findings to the forefront. Vadra's
shady dealings were common gossip in banking circles for years.
The media knew it well too. However, it is the IAC that crystallized
the outrage, presented some documents and made it a topic of
household discussion.
IAC's next move, however, demanding an independent
investigation into Vadra, is probably going to disappoint them.
Firstly, a fair and independent investigation is nearly impossible in
India against the Gandhi family, especially when they are in power.
Second, and more important, is even if a fair investigation is
conducted, there may not be much illegality in what Vadra did
(ignoring the charges of fraudulent financial statement, as alleged in
some news reports). After all, Vadra made a friend in DLF, and DLF
helped Vadra out. That's all the paper trail may reveal, despite
exhaustive investigations. In fact, when powerful people help each
other, they are smart enough to keep the paper trail sacrosanct.
Expensive lawyers and CAs work hard to ensure the deals have a
semblance of legality, whatever the intent.
Proving quid-pro-quo is going to be even more difficult. A
company like DLF has a vast presence. It needs the government to
cooperate with it in hundreds of places. DLF does not need to do a
quid pro quo or transactional help. It would rather do favors and
make friends in the government. Favours, as the eponymous
character in the novel The Godfather would say, that could be utilized
at a later date in the form of return favours.
In fact, proximity and access to the family are of huge value. If

DLF seniors are seen hanging out with the Gandhis, would not the
Congress CM in Haryana view DLF's requests, well, a little
differently? Neither DLF, nor the family, nor the Haryana government
may ever sit down and spell out how each will help the other. They
don't need to, for they are friends. There's nothing illegal about it,
right? In fact, this lack of, or hard to prove illegality is the cornerstone
of the defence put forward by the Congress' army of spokespersons
and eager-beaver sycophants. 'It's a private matter' or 'prove give
and take' are often the arguments given. It is hard to fault them
completely, for the legal bases are probably well covered, or at least
very difficult to prove otherwise. And yet, what happened is ethically
Op/Ed: Hayden's problem with
Sachin, quintessential Aussie
M
Sharmila Ravinder/TNN
atthew Hayden in his typical fashion is sulking over the
meritorious order (Member of the order) of Australia award
to Tendulkar and is of the firm opinion Sachin does not
deserve the honor. His reasons, lame as ever. Citing the award as
sacred and lamenting over Sachin not living in Australia, Hayden
has displayed a quintessential streak amongst most Australians.
Hayden at his sarcastic best remarked that had Sachin been living
in Australia he could even be awarded the Prime Minister’s gong.
Aussies, remain and continue to remain the most ‘inward looking’
society in this world. Cut off from the rest of the world
geographically, content with their
own peculiar wild life, fauna and
flora not to be found anywhere
else, the average Aussie rarely
thinks beyond his beer, barbecue,
Aussie Rules football and when
the season changes, cricket.
Sachin is not the first Indian to
receive this award; he is the
second after the noted former
Attorney General Soli Sorabjee to
receive the honor. In the past,
over 275 Non Australians have
been appointed to the order of
Australia over four levels that the
award confers, so why is Hayden
cribbing about this award to an
iconic Indian who is recognized by every Australian?
Hayden has displayed extremely poor sportsmanship with his
recent boorish attitude. In fact, the award for Tendulkar should be
seen as a step to cementing closer ties with India especially after a
flurry of racial attacks on Indians in the recent past. Australia
continues to attract a large number of Indian students who annually
spend a colossal amount on University fees and still land up driving
taxis after their Masters or return home jobless thereafter. A few
manage to secure sound jobs after a lot of struggle. Around 284,000
international students were granted visas in the first three quarters
as of the financial year ending 31st March 2012, an increase of
around 5% as compared to the same period in the previous year.
Indians currently rank fourth in Australia’s migrant community.
There are enough and more Indians who currently reside, work
and contribute towards Australia’s betterment. It can be said that it
was only as late as 1973 that Australia abolished its formal White
Australia policy. Australia in comparison to most other colonized
countries is a more recent multi cultural, multi ethnic embracing
nation. The Aboriginals, the indigenous people of Australia are
still not treated at par and continue to be discriminated in matters
of health and education. There is a program to close the gap in the
next twenty-five years. One may argue that we Indians remain more

racist than anyone else within our own cocoons of caste, sub
caste and religions and hence we have no right to look into the
faults of another. Maybe so, but, when India honored Nelson
Mandela in 1990 with it’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna,
India rejoiced at this gesture, even if there were questions raised
on the constitutional basis of the award to a non-Indian. We came
together as a country and took utmost pride in the honor that was
bestowed on the great leader.
Tendulkar is most certainly not the greatest Indian to walk on
the face of this planet, but he is most certainly an outstanding
Indian in his field of chosen profession. He remains one that
commands the respect of most
Australians and let Hayden not
pretend that is not to be the case.
Even the great Don included
Tendulkar as the only cricketer of
current times in his best-ever
lineup. I have witnessed time and
over a hush that would descend
onto the hallowed grounds of the
MCG as the little Master would
make his way in, the racist taunts
to the Indian audience at the
grounds would stop, no more
choruses of “ where is your visa?”
would fill the Melbourne air, the
truce would last so long as
Tendulkar occupied centre stage,
once he left, the Aussies would continue to do what they do best.
Bully. “Great batsman he may be, as the Prime Minister pointed
out in New Delhi yesterday with exquisite timing, but sections of
the Australian cricket community still remember the central role he
played in the Andrew Symonds scandal. Tendulkar lied to an
International Cricket Council (ICC) appeal following the
suspension of Harbhajan Singh for racially abusing Andrew
Symonds during the Sydney Test in 2008 to save face for his
country and his team mate, who was a serial offender,” wrote
Australian columnist Malcolm Conn. If the ‘Monkeygate’ scandal
is something that Hayden and other Aussies are still holding onto,
it is time for them to move on since Symonds himself has happily
played for Mumbai Indians along with Harbhajan and under
Tendulkar. There were no problems. Australian Prime Minister Julia
Gillard’s recent visit to India was a lot more interesting for the fall
that she had near Gandhiji’s memorial second to announcing the
honor for Tendulkar. The Prime Minister succumbs to gravity
screeched most headlines and I wish most Australians irked with
the award too succumb to gravity like their Prime Minister. It’s
about time they do. There was a reason why the great Don thought
he was looking at a ‘mirror-image’ of himself when he watched
Tendulkar play. Most Aussies are yet to come to terms with this.

wrong. Politicians work for the benefit of common people, not for
their friends, business partners and relatives. At least that is the
assumption people had about the Gandhi family. People also assumed
that they believed in simplicity and were above personal greed, but
that doesn't seem to be the case. After all, what use is wearing
simple cotton sarees and kurtas, implying simplicity, when your family
members are accumulating hundreds of crores by exploiting political
power?
There will be a huge price the Gandhis and Congress will pay
for this. Ethics may not matter in courts, but do matter in the hearts
of people. A family that betrays trust will pay the price in the next
election. It may even lose that trust forever.
However, the Gandhis are by no means alone in this. Nor is this
just a Congress issue. A large number of politicians have lost track
of the idea that every profession in this world has ethics - it may not
be illegal to break them but still is definitely wrong. A doctor must
treat his patient as soon as possible, it is assumed, under ethical
medical practice. But if he delays treatment, it would be hard to
prove it illegal. A teacher must try to teach her students well, though
if she doesn't, it won't be illegal. Society needs ethics as much as
laws to function well. A politician should think a hundred times
before forging friendships with people with whom there might be a
future conflict of interest, and a million times before they accept any
substantial favors. Favours usually oblige one to return them, and if
that means hurting the interests of people that put you in that
position, the effects can be devastating. Vadra's foolish greed and
love for DLF, and the other family members' tacit approval, will cost
the Gandhis. The cost will be in terms of reputation and esteem.
Wise people know these are priceless and far more valuable than
anything quoted in rupees per square feet.

K
ejriwal (the Joker in the political pack; henceforth abbreviated to just Joker) has positioned himself on the anti-corruption platform.
Very little has emerged about his party’s economic priorities. But a few statements of his have emerged and what has come out so
far indicates that he is yet another Left-of-Left politician. More anti-corporate than even Mamata; more anti-reform than even the
BJP; in short more Leftist than the Left and Mamata put together! Here’s a smattering of what has emerged: Joker is against power tariff
increases. In Delhi, he went so far as to organize a protest against the Delhi government’s recent increases in power, forgetting that power
tariffs had not been increased for
so many years. He in fact, made it a political
issue by creating a drama around
“restoring” power at the home of a power thief.
He made some bizarre observation
that power discoms are making enormous
profits and alleged some sort of
criminal conspiracy against Sheila Dixit
personally (that she was not
allowing discoms to lower tariffs). He chose
to ignore the facts of the matter as
usual; and of course demonstrated no
understanding
of
how
governments undertaken several programs,
many of which need to be funded
through “profits” (if any) from other programs.
This indicates a clear preference for
mindless socialism; and a disdain for even
basic economics. I would have
liked to hear Joker say what he would like to
over-price so that things like power
could be under-priced or subsidized. But that
was not forthcoming. One gathers
the impression that just like all Left parties,
and more recently the BJP, Kejriwal
wants prices to remain stuck in the past. How
the government should reduce fiscal deficit then is a mystery.

City of Brampton’s International Business Development and
Marketing Plan key component for facilitating economic growth
Generating awareness of Brampton as a competitive location for
new business investment from North America and other international
markets is a key component of the City’s economic development
strategy. Following a recent successful fact-finding mission to India,
a City of Brampton team is now heading to China with other
businesses and municipal officials
led by the Confederation of Greater
Toronto
Chinese
Business
Association.
“To build a strong city we
have to be able to compete
globally,” said Mayor Susan
Fennell.
“Leveraging
our
relationship with our business
leaders, provincial representatives,
and the federal government, we are
working on creating connections
for our local business community
with international/global suppliers
and investors.” The international
trade missions, as part of the City
of Brampton’s International Business Development and Marketing
Plan, are focused on new business networking opportunities;
exchange of new ideas with international governmental and business
leaders; trade and investment opportunities for the benefit of the
local markets; and building new business relationships with people in
different countries and cultures.
The proactive business development and marketing activities
are aimed at driving foreign direct investments into key industry
sectors such as food and beverage, advanced manufacturing, life
sciences, information communication technology, creative economy,
logistics and transportation. “The City of Brampton is committed to
expanding Brampton’s brand and image in domestic and international
markets as an attractive location for business investment and building
strategic alliances. These include partnerships focused on trade, joint
ventures, joint marketing and other alliances, and fostering municipal
cooperation,” commented Sohail Saeed, Director of Economic
Development. The six trade missions undertaken by Brampton
Economic Development this year include:
Mission led by Ontario
government - MIPIM, Real Estate
and Investment Trade Show,
Cannes, France
Mission led by Greater Toronto
Marketing Association (GTMA) Food and Beverage, Los Angeles,
California
Mission let by GTMA - SIAL and

All trade missions are part of the Council-approved 2011-2014
International Business Development and Marketing Plan. The fiveyear plan to promote Brampton as an investment location was prepared
by the Economic Development Office and approved by Council in June
2011. In September 2012, the City of Brampton’s Business Attraction
and Retention Advisory Committee (BARAC) received a progress report
on the 2012 International Business Development and Marketing Plan.
Economic Development staff will continue to update the plan as well
as provide annual year-end summaries to Brampton City Council.
Ontario Celebrates Waste Reduction Week
McGuinty Government Recognizes Efforts of Ontarians to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
TORONTO/BUREAU NEWS
Ontarians are doing their part to
reduce, reuse and recycle waste.
We are keeping more than three
million tonnes of waste out of
landfills and waterways every
year -- enough to fill more than
five Rogers Centres. Ontario is
taking action and seeing results,
including:
Diverting more than 900,000
tonnes of waste through
municipal Blue Box programs.
The residential recovery rate
has gone from 53 per cent in
2003 to 64 per cent in 2011.
Properly disposing of or
recycling more than 26,000
tonnes
of
household
hazardous waste like batteries
and paints, protecting our
environment from pollution.
Diverting nearly 150,000
tonnes of used tires from
disposal, achieving an overall
diversion rate of 93 per cent in
2011.Businesses such as
Campbell Company of Canada
are also making a difference. By
reducing the amount of
packaging materials used in its
manufacturing plant, the
company has saved 1,084
tonnes of steel, 13.5 tonnes of
plastic and 2,000 trees a year.
Diverting and reducing
waste is part of the McGuinty
government's plan to create a

PUNJABI & HINDI LANGUAGE
GROWING IN CANADA
Contd. from Page 1
The four th language that declined was Chinese, which mostly
reflects a change in the way the census repor ts Chinese languages. For the first time, Chinese languages are being analyzed
separately in the census. (The term Chinese, designated in this
release as 'not otherwise specified,' or 'n.o.s.,' refers to people
who repor ted 'Chinese' in their response to the question on language spoken most often at home without specifying Mandarin,
Cantonese or other Chinese languages.)
The top 10 immigrant languages spoken most often at home in
2011 were: Punjabi, Chinese n.o.s., Cantonese, Spanish, Tagalog,
Arabic, Mandarin, Italian, Urdu and German.
Nearly 9 in 10 Canadians who repor ted speaking an immigrant
language most often at home lived in a census metropolitan area
(CMA). The majority (80%) lived in six CMAs: Toronto, Montréal,
Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa-Gatineau.
In Toronto, 1,790,000 people repor ted speaking an immigrant language most often at home, 32.2% of the total population, the highest propor tion among all CMAs.
Among those speaking an immigrant language most often at home
in Toronto, 35.4% spoke one of five: Cantonese (8.8%), Punjabi
(8.0%), Chinese n.o.s. (7.0%), Urdu (5.9%) and Tamil (5.7%).
In Montréal, 626,000 people, or 16.5% of the total population, repor ted speaking an immigrant language most often at home.
Among these, 17.2% spoke Arabic and 15.2% spoke Spanish. Others included Italian (8.1%), Chinese n.o.s. (5.7%) and a Creole
language (5.4%). These five languages accounted for more than
50% of people speaking an immigrant language as their main home
language in Montréal.
In Vancouver, 712,000 people or 31% of the population repor ted
speaking an immigrant language most often at home. Of these,
17.7% spoke Punjabi, followed by Cantonese (16.0%), Chinese
n.o.s. (12.2%), Mandarin (11.8%) and Tagalog (6.7%). These five
leading immigrant home languages accounted for 64.4% of the
overall population speaking an immigrant language most often at
home. In the CMAs of Toronto and Vancouver, the share of the
population repor ting that it spoke only English at home continued
the decline that began in 2001. In Toronto, the propor tion fell from
62.5% in 2001 to 59.1% in 2006 and 55.0% in 2011. In Vancouver,
the proportions were 65.3%, 62.0% and 58.0%, respectively.
At the same time, the relative share of Toronto's population who
repor ted speaking a language other than English or French in combination with English at home increased from 20.7% in 2001 to
23.0% in 2006 and 27.6% in 2011.

judging panel. The runners up for the 2012 programme were Mr.
Bonti Liverpool of Dominica, and Vincentian, Edward Williams. Ms.
Gosepa was singled out for her work as a volunteer and social worker
in depressed areas of Curacao. She has been instrumental in helping
to shape the lives of many residents of the villages of Flip, Seru
Fortuna and Groot Kwartier. Over the years, she has helped dozens
of families, especially single-parent ones, with the tools to better
their lives and move ahead socially. She is being credited as one of
the key persons that helped with the turnaround of the village of
Seru Fortuna in the eighties and nineties. Seru Fortuna is a housing
project that was developed by the Housing Authorities in the late
70’s. The area is infamous for its social problems relating to poverty,
crime, drugs, illiteracy, and other problems common in these types
of neighbourhoods.

“Eat and move – it’s profoundly simple,” says Gayle Bursey, Director of
Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention, and Supportive Environments
project lead for Peel Public Health. “It’s time to eat and move for the
enjoyment of it, without solely focusing on weight, and to do it regularly,
in an environment that actively supports it.” Peel Public Health’s vision
for creating supportive environments will focus on policy change, health
inclusion and diversity, and social marketing, and be based on the best
available evidence and evaluation. Like New York, Peel’s vision includes
improving the food environment, making spaces more comfortable for
physical activity and active transportation, and promoting building
design that encourages physical activity. Peel will focus on four priority
settings: pre-school, schools, workplaces and the built environment.
“Where we live, learn and work affects our health,” said Regional
Councilor Elaine Moore, Co-Chair of the Health Services Committee.
“Right now, those places can make it far too easy for people to make
unhealthy choices. The Region of Peel is committed to building a future
where our communities not only encourage healthy, active behaviours,
but also make those decisions the easy ones.” Childhood and adult
obesity, which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular
disease and some cancers, has been steadily increasing in Canada over
the last 20-plus years. The prevalence of diabetes in Peel is already high

Students Beat CBC Journalists in the 'Are You Smarter
than a 10th Grader?' Citizenship Challenge
MINISTER KENNEY DISPLAYS THE NEW DISCOVER CANADA E-BOOK AT THE CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP CHALLENGE:
OTTAWA/BUREAU NEWS:
Grade 10 students brought
Citizenship Week 2012 to a close
this morning by beating two CBC
journalists in an interactive game
show quiz that pitted their
knowledge
of
Canadian
citizenship and history against
the knowledge of two wellknown Parliamentary Press
Gallery members.
The event, hosted by the
Historica-Dominion Institute,
challenged CBC Inside Politics
journalists Kady O’Malley and
Laura Payton to match wits with
students from Immaculata High
School at the Canadian Museum
of Civilization. Citizenship,
Immigration
and
Multiculturalism Minister Jason
Kenney played the role of Alex
Trebek, grilling journalists and
students with a series of
questions based on Discover
Canada: The Rights and
Responsibilities of Canadian
Citizenship, the study guide for
those preparing to meet the
knowledge requirement to obtain
Canadian citizenship.
Discover Canada highlights
important events of Canadian
history, such as the War of 1812,
and explains key Canadian
symbols and institutions and the
rights and responsibilities of
citizenship. The questions
during the Challenge also
featured clips from the HistoricaDominion Institute’s renowned
Heritage
Minute
series,
including the new Minute
released last week.
“Discover Canada is an
excellent source for both
newcomers and established
Canadians to find out more about
our history and the pioneers that
helped to build this great
country,” said Minister Kenney.
“It is heart-warming to see the
young people at this event so
engaged and eager to learn about
our country’s history.” “The
Canadian Citizenship Challenge
is a fun and interactive way to
help strengthen students’
understanding of the rights and
responsibilities essential to
active
citizenship,”
said
Anthony
Wilson-Smith,
President of the HistoricaDominion Institute. “I am thrilled
to be taking part in this unique
event, celebrating the Challenge
and showcasing the importance
of youth civic engagement.”
During his opening remarks,
Minister
Kenney
also
announced the launch of
Citizenship and Immigration
Canada’s School Twinning Pilot
Project, an initiative to engage
teachers and challenge students
in joint multiculturalism and civic
participation school projects.
The objective is to foster in
students a better appreciation
and understanding of their role
as citizens of our diverse
country. Interested schools will
apply to be virtually “twinned”

another
Canadian
institution to develop and
implement a civic engagement
project on specific themes.
Participating schools will be

More Canadian entrepreneurs
plan to hire: RBC Survey
Unfazed by economic uncertainty, Canadian small business owners plan to invest in their businesses
TORONTO/BUREAU NEWS: More Canadian small business
owners plan to hire this year, according to the 2012 RBC Small
Business Survey. Almost three-in-ten (29 per cent) are confident
that they will be adding new (full or part-time) employees within
the next 12 months, up from 25 per cent in 2011. Optimistic about
the future success of their business, 68 per cent of entrepreneurs
plan to invest in their businesses within the next two years.
Another recent RBC study found that 94 per cent of Canadians
believe that small businesses play a critical role in the growth of
9
the economy and 88 per cent view them as vital job creators in
their community. According to Statistics Canada, small
businesses continue to be key sources of new jobs - small firms
accounted for, on average, 43 per cent of all jobs created in the
private sector between 2001 to 2011. "Small businesses are an
important driver of the economy," said Mike Michell, national
director, Small Business, RBC. "It's a very positive sign that,
despite challenging times, almost three-in-ten Canadian business
owners are telling us that they are preparing to invest in new
employees."
However, hiring new employees is not without its difficulties
for etrepreneurs. One-in-three (32 per cent) business owners with
five to 25 employees say that finding qualified help will be one of
their top challenges over the next year.
Taking a longer term view, key areas of small business
investment in the next two years identified in the RBC poll include:
new equipment (35 per cent)
new technology (29 per cent)
new products and services (27 per cent)
hiring new employees (17 per cent)
employee training (17 per cent)
"The intention to invest in their enterprises demonstrates
the continued resiliency of Canadian small business owners,"
added Michell. "Almost a quarter of Canadian entrepreneurs (23
per cent) expect to continue growing the size of their business.
Many may see this as a good time to take advantage of low
interest rates and perhaps purchase new equipment in USD or
other currencies that have lost ground to our Canadian dollar."
Fee Returns for Federal Skilled Worker applicants
affected by the backlog elimination measure
TORONTO/BUREAU NEWS: Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is now starting to return fees which were paid to the Department
for Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) applications affected by the Government of Canada’s Jobs, Growth and Long-Term Prosperity Act. If you
applied before February 27, 2008, and have not heard from CIC about whether a decision based on FSW program selection criteria (*see
below) was made on your application, you may be affected by this new law. If you fall under this category, CIC needs to verify your contact
information is up to date so that your fee return will reach you at your current address. Please note that interest will not be paid on the fees.
Please confirm your latest contact details by sending CIC this form (PDF, 1.4 MB). While we will also contact you by regular mail later on
if we do not hear from you, communicating with us electronically is the best and easiest way to have your fee return processed. Due to the
large number of affected applicants, the fee return process may take some time from the date your form is received by CIC to the issuance
of your cheque. We appreciate your patience. Your FSW application has been terminated by operation of law if:
you applied before February 27, 2008, and
a decision based on FSW program selection criteria* was not made on your application by an immigration officer before March
29, 2012.
Improving Highway 11 Near Fort Frances
TORONTO/BUREAU NEWS: Ontario is creating more than 200
jobs with ongoing improvements to the Noden Causeway on
Highway 11 near Fort Frances. Opened in the 1960's, the causeway
is a major link over Rainy Lake on the TransCanada Highway for
communities west of Thunder Bay. Upgrades include improving
above- and below-water support structures and installing new
concrete panels on the driving surface to ensure safer, more
convenient travel for families and businesses. Construction began
recently with completion expected in 2014. Investing in Northern
Ontario's roads, highways and bridges is part of the McGuinty
government's Growth Plan for Northern Ontario. A strong northern
economy creates local jobs and protects the services that mean
the most to families -- health care and education.
Ontario Launches Job Creation Programs
in Eastern and Southwestern Ontario
OTTAWA/BUREAU NEWS: The new Southwestern Ontario
Development Fund and renewed Eastern Ontario Development
Fund are now open and receiving applications from companies
that are driving innovation, growing Ontario's economy, and
creating local jobs. These funds will help diversify and strengthen
each region's economy by encouraging businesses to pursue
innovation and new markets, while creating jobs. Since partnering
with the government through the Eastern Ontario Development
Fund, Blommer Chocolate Company has invested in modernizing
its Campbellford plant, expanding Blommer's market reach, creating
14 new jobs, and keeping 80 more for local families. Attracting
investment and building business is a key part of the McGuinty

Ontario Providing Better
Tools For Cancer Screening
OTTAWA: Ontario is integrating screening reminders for
breast, cervical and colorectal cancer into one co-ordinated
system, improving cancer screening outreach for Ontarians.
The province supports screening for breast, cervical and
colorectal cancer through mammograms, Pap tests and a simple
take-home test for anyone aged 50 to 74 with no history of
colorectal cancer. Starting in early 2013, a co-ordinated system
for all three cancers will mail screening reminders to patients
as well as follow-up letters.
To help Ontarians learn more about cancer screening, Minister
of Health and Long-Term Care, Deb Matthews, will host a live
online Ask an Expert event on Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. People are
invited to submit their questions in advance at ontario.ca/
screenforlife. Questions will be answered at the event by a
panel of cancer screening experts.
Expanding cancer screening programs helps to keep Ontarians
healthy and receiving the right care at the right time in the
right place is a key part of the McGuinty government's Action
Plan for Health Care.

Minister Ambrose joins groundbreaking
ceremony at Vancouver Shipyards
VANCOUVER/BUREAU NEWS: Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public
Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women
and the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage
and Official Languages and Regional Minister for British Columbia,
took part in a groundbreaking ceremony at Vancouver Shipyards as
part of the shipyard’s $200-million infrastructure investment for the
National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS).
“It is with great pleasure that we take part in this historic
ceremony,” said Minister Ambrose. “One year ago, Vancouver
Shipyards was selected to build Canada’s non-combat vessels and
today we witness this important milestone, a major investment that
will create jobs and enable Vancouver Shipyards to efficiently build
large vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Coast
Guard.”
“Today’s investment demonstrates Vancouver Shipyards’
commitment to the West Coast economy,” said Minister Moore.
“Years of stable employment for local workers and world-class
shipbuilding facilities can only mean good news for the region.”
Vancouver Shipyards will proceed with major upgrades,
including four new fabrication buildings, a shipbuilding gantry crane
and a load out pier. The announced investment is the result of a
commitment made under the NSPS and was a key component of the
evaluation process. In order to most efficiently build the ships of
the federal fleet, the shipyards need to achieve a “target state.” The
target state is a level of efficiency that is internationally recognized,
and set by First Marine International. The main purpose of this
requirement was to select shipyards that were ready to invest in
becoming capable of building Canada’s vessels. As per Vancouver
Shipyards’ commitment, these investments are funded entirely by
the shipyard, which means no cost to Canada.
Vancouver Shipyards’ infrastructure improvements will allow it
to build the Canadian Coast Guard’s science vessels and polar
icebreakers and the Royal Canadian Navy’s joint support ships more
efficiently, while delivering the best value to Canada.
The shipyard estimates that this investment is expected to create
approximately 1000 jobs over the next three years, proving that the
NSPS is already showing signs of being an economic booster for
the West Coast. The NSPS—the largest procurement sourcing
arrangement in Canadian history—is also expected to create
thousands of high-value jobs in shipbuilding and related industries
across the country.
In June 2010, the Government of Canada made a strategic
decision to support the Canadian marine industry and build ships
for the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Coast Guard, here in
Canada. Since the announcement of the shipyards selected to build
Canada’s large vessels, Canada has established strategic
relationships with the shipyards by signing the umbrella agreements
and has begun negotiations on the ships to be built.

PROMOTING SUSTAINABILITY OF
ONTARIO'S WORKERS'
COMPENSATION SYSTEM
TORONTO: Ontario is moving toward amending the Workplace
Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA) to promote the long-term
stability of the workers' compensation system.
Proposed changes to the WSIA would, if passed, allow
the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) to:
Review Loss of Earnings benefits after 72 months -currently benefits are generally 'locked in' after 72 months,
even if an injured worker's condition improves or they rejoin
the workforce.
Base survivor benefits on the average earnings of the
deceased worker's occupation or trade rather than the statutory
minimum currently provided under the Act.
A financially stable workplace safety and insurance system
is part of the McGuinty government's commitment to the safety
and well-being of Ontario workers and to a fair and balanced
insurance system for injured workers and their employers.
NEW EVIDENCE REVEALS CANADIAN WELLBEING ON THE DECLINE
TORONTO: The recession hit
Canadians harder than economic
numbers such as GDP have
indicated and the decline in our
wellbeing continues despite
subsequent economic recovery,
says the Honourable Roy
Romanow, advisory board cochair for the Canadian Index of
Wellbeing (CIW), housed in the
Faculty of Applied Health
Sciences at the University of
Waterloo.
With the release of their
second composite index, the CIW
reports a 24% drop in Canadian
wellbeing between 2008 and 2010.
Further, from 1994 to 2010,
Canada's economy, as measured
by Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
grew by a robust 28.9%, while
improvements in Canadian
wellbeing over the same 17-year
period saw only a small 5.7%
increase.
"The findings uncover some
troubling truths about the
connection between our economy
and our wellbeing," says
Romanow. "When Canada's
economy was thriving, Canadians
saw only modest improvements in
their overall quality of life, but
when the economy faltered our
wellbeing took a disproportionate
step backward. It begs the
question: Are our governments
truly responding to the needs and
values of everyday Canadians?"
The CIW report: 'How are
Canadians Really doing?' tracks 64
separate indicators within eight
interconnected domains central to
the lives of Canadians:
Community Vitality; Democratic
Engagement;
Education;
Environment;
Healthy
Populations; Leisure and Culture;
Living Standards; and Time Use.
The report shows that since
2008 we have experienced a
significant drop in our
standard of living along with
further declines in the health of
our environment and our
ability to participate in leisure
and culture activities. Even
growth areas such as health
and education began to show
signs of weakening.
"The
recession
and
sluggish recovery have taken a
big toll on Canadians," says
CIW co-chair, the Honourable
Monique
Bégin.
"The
deterioration in job quality and
economic security, soaring
long-term unemployment and
persistent income inequality
speak to the growing unease
felt coast to coast. Our
governments must recognize
this reality as they make
decisions on how to steer us
forward, particularly given
predictions of an extended
period of weak economic
growth."
According to the report,
not all is doom and gloom.
Violent crime is at its lowest
level since 1994, dropping
every year since 2001 and
property crime, also at its
lowest level, is down 48% from
1994. The percentage of
Canadians who feel safe
walking after dark is at its
highest level since that year.
Canadians continue to report
an
increased
sense
of
belonging
to
their
communities. "Despite the
recession, our sense of
community vitality continues
to grow - this speaks to who
we are as Canadians," says
Romanow. "We recognize our
survival and progress depend
on our ability to come together
and remain united around shared
values. Understanding how
Canadians are really doing is
critical for any government
making decisions on how we
move forward in our recovery."
Harper Government to Create the Canadian Museum of History

Mark O’Neill, President and
CEO of the Canadian Museum

the institution is taking a bold
step into the future by
refocusing its attention on our
shared national history. “The
Canadian Museum of History

as well as visitors from around

The transformation will
require a one-time investment
of $25 million that will be
funded within the existing
budget for Canadian Heritage.
OTTAWA: James Moore,
Minister of Canadian Heritage
and Official Languages, today
announced
the
Harper
Government’s intention to
introduce legislation creating the
Canadian Museum of History,
the first in a series of measures
on the road to Canada’s 150th
birthday in 2017.
In order to achieve this, the
Harper Government plans to
introduce amendments to the

name and mandate of the
Canadian

Civilization. Minister Moore
made the announcement at the
Canadian Museum of Civilization
in the presence of the Museum’s
Board of Trustees, Museum
staff,
eminent
Canadian
historians, and members of
historical associations from
across Canada.
“This year marks the start
of the five-year countdown to
Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017.
It offers us an unprecedented
opportunity to celebrate our
history and those achievements
that define who we are as
Canadians,” said Minister
Moore. “Canadians deserve a
national museum of history that
tells our stories and presents our
country’s treasures to the
world.”
The Canadian Museum of
History will highlight the
national achievements and
accomplishments that have
shaped our country, including
the “Last Spike” from the
construction of the Canada

“Rocket” Richard’s hockey
jersey and items from Terry Fox’s
Marathon of Hope. Through
existing resources and new
partnerships with museums
across Canada, the Canadian

space. This renovation, to be
completed before Canada’s
150th birthday in 2017, will

Arvind Kejriwal dares PM,
Sonia Gandhi to public debate
NEW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal on
Sunday
challenged
PM
Manmohan Singh, Congress
chief Sonia Gandhi and Rahul
Gandhi to a public debate and
said India Against Corruption
would respond to questions
raised by party general secretary
Digvijay Singh only after the
leadership came clean on charges
against Robert Vadra and
corruption.
This came in response to
Digvijay Singh's questions to
Kejriwal on funding of his NGO
and other issues.
Earlier in the day, India
Against Corruption (IAC)
activists clashed with police who
used water canons to disperse
them while they trying to barge
into Haryana CM Bhupinder
Singh Hooda's residence in
Delhi.
Condemning the police
action, Kejriwal said his
supporters from Haryana were
on a peaceful demonstration to
protest against the efforts to
save Vadra, who they alleged was
aided by Hooda in favouring
realty major DLF.
"We had put some
questions to Robert Vadra and
the PM. Let them answer first.
Then, we will answer all
questions from Digvijay Singh. I
request Singh to encourage Mrs
Gandhi, PM or Rahul Gandhi to
come for a public debate. Let's
question each other and let
public question us on personal
and public issues. Is Digvijay
Singh ready? If he cannot
convince his party bosses or the
PM, then people would think he
is doing all this for cheap
publicity and to divert
attention," Kejriwal said.
When asked about Singh's
remarks that there was evidence
against the kin of BJP leaders A
B Vajpayee and L K Advani of
alleged corruption but Congress
would never use it to embarrass
them, Kejriwal said his group has
been talking about each party
protecting the other's interest.
"They are not bringing
these issues out not on moral
grounds but on corrupt grounds.
I congratulate Singh for
confessing this. He has evidence
of corruption (against senior BJP
leaders' kin)... BJP has evidence
against Vadra and Singh. But
both have an understanding," he
said.
Meanwhile, protesters, most
of them from the Haryana wing
of IAC, claimed that scores of
activists were injured in the
police action.
The protesters breached
the barricade and marched
towards Hooda's residence when
they were stopped by police.
However, the activists insisted
on marching ahead and they
reached close to the residence.
Kejriwal got three-four
11
protesters who were injured in
the police action from Ram
Manohar Lohia hospital to
address a press conference in
his office in Kaushambi along
with him. He made the injured
activists show the wounds they
sustained in the action.
"Congress and the government
are now trying to save Vadra.
The chief minister has
transferred the officer who
ordered a probe into the incident.
They are telling us corruption
will go on and we will have to
suffer. Our supporters had gone
there to seek some answers from
Hooda.
But
they
were
lathicharged," he said.

an unidentified person posing as NRI got the mutation done from
the revenue depar tment. Though the buyer and seller have been
booked, no action has been taken against the erring revenue
depar tment officers.
Jagdip Singh of Sirhind, who has been staying in Hong Kong for
the past several years, had appointed Karnvir Singh as his legal
caretaker of his 25 kanal agriculture land in Sirhind. Last week,
Karnvir received a call from a friend that some unidentified persons had taken possession of the land and when he enquired
from local revenue depar tment office, he learned that his uncle
had sold off his land.
When he spoke to his uncle in Hong Kong, he denied having
knowledge of any such sale following which Karnvir approached
Fatehgarh Sahib SSP for action. During investigation, it came to
light that Inderpal Singh, nephew of Jagdip, along with his wife
Suman, and some other persons had made a fake voter identity
card, PAN card and other documents of his NRI uncle and sold
the land by introducing a conman as his uncle in the local revenue depar tment office.
"We have registered a case against 10 persons, including relatives of the complainant. So far three persons have been arrested and we are conducting raids to nab others," said SSP
Hardial Mann. Police have registered a case of fraud under sections 406,419,420,465,467,468,471,120-B IPC against Inderpal,
Suman, Jagmit Singh,Jit singh, Kewal Singh, Balvir Rai, Kewal
Singh, Gurprit Singh, Parmjit Singh and Ravinder Kumar. They
have arrested Parmjit, Ravinder, Kewal and Jit Singh.

SONIA’S LAND ACQUISITION VIEWS
RAISE WORRIES FOR INDIA INC
NEW DELHI: Congress supremo
Sonia Gandhi's recommendation
to increase the consent required
from landowners for acquisition
of land for private projects to 80%
has worried India industry which
said the move, if implemented, will
push up project costs, delays and
hurt industrial growth.
Just two days after a
ministerial panel, headed by
Sharad Pawar, said that consent
of 67% land owners would be
enough for the government to
acquire land for private projects,
the
Congress
president
recommended to the PMO that it
should be increased to 80%. Only
in case of acquisition for public
private partnership (PPP) projects
the threshold could be diluted to
67%, if the ownership of the land
remained with the government.
"We
had
made
a
recommendation of 60% of
consensus required for both
private and PPP projects. But then
67% or two-third approval was a
good move too. If it is increased
to 80%, it will be very difficult for
industry to acquire land," said
Chandrajit Banerjee, director
general of the Confederation of
Indian Industry ( CII).
"India already faces a lot of
issues
relating
to
land
acquisitions and land costs. This
will add to the problems further,"
said Banerjee.
Indian industry is already
reeling under the impact of a sharp
slowdown, high interest rates,
delay in implementation of policies
and rising input costs. Growth has
stalled and latest data shows that
factory output in August rose
2.7%.
Industry groups said that the
proposal may "not be realistic" as
increasing the consensus limit
would severely impact industrial
growth in the country.
"The crux of the matter is not
what the threshold limit would be,
but that the government has to
remember the underlying
philosophy - industry in India
needs to be more competitive. It
has to be a realistic policy as there
is naturally a shift from agriculture
to industry for jobs," said R
VKanoria, president of the
Federation of Indian Chambers of
Commerce and Industry (Ficci).
He said Ficci will send across
its views once the government
finalizes the rules and the industry
group
would
want
the
government to retain the
consensus level at 67%. The
Associated Chamber of Commerce
and Industry (Assocham) said
that while it welcomed the
provision of 67% consent for PPP
projects, the move to raise it to 80%
for
private
projects
is
"unreasonable and irrational" as
it would cause substantial delays
to project implementation.
"Getting consent from 80%
land owners will be very difficult,
if not impossible. Therefore, the
consent of 65% of families of the
affected area should be
prescribed," said D S Rawat,
secretary general of Assocham.
Indian origin teen in US wins honour for solar device
MUMBAI: Fourteen-year-old Deepika Kurup of Indian origin won
'America's Young Scientist' title on Tuesday.
Kurup, who lives in Nashua, Boston, won the prestigious
award along with a cash prize of $25,000 for designing an
affordable water purifier that runs on solar power.
She intends to use a part of her award to deploy her prototype
in countries facing shortage of potable water such as India.
Kurup's parents hail from Trivandrum in Kerala.
Kurup, a Std IX student from Nashua high school, competed
with nine other finalists in the 'Discovery Education 3M Young
Scientist Challenge' and emerged as the winner after three rounds.
The finalists were mentored by scientists at 3M for three months.
"One of the challenges was to create prototypes using 3M
products.
We were asked to come up with solutions to problems faced
in the world. In this round, I designed a light-weight, noninflammable spacecraft," said Kurup. Her invention uses two
chemicals - titanium oxide and zinc oxide - which, when hit by
sunlight, undergo a chemical change producing hydroxyl radicals
that can destroy certain bacteria. Her innovation harnesses solar
energy to disinfect contaminated water.
Deepika's mother, Meena Pradeep, said, "She read many
research papers before designing the purifier. She has always good
in academics and the captain of the Science and Math teams at
school." She met US President Barrack Obama during her stint at
the 3M Innovation centre.
NEW DELHI: Hours after Delhi Police put the suspected Indian
Mujahideen terrorist Fasih Mohammed under arrest following
his depor tation, India on Monday said that he was a very important catch and Saudi Arabia had fully cooperated with New Delhi
in this case.
Reacting over depor tation, home secretary R K Singh said Fasih
Mohammed was depor ted by Saudi Arabia only after the accused served sentence there for some minor crime. His deportation was an excellent example of cooperation from Saudi Arabia,
he added.
Singh, however, did not elaborate on the kind of crime Fasih
might have been committed there.
Home secretary said Saudi Arabia had never denied deporting
the suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist who acted as facilitator for the terror outfit cadres who were arrested by Delhi Police
late last year in connection with attack in Delhi and Bangalore.
Saudi Arabia had only asked for some time for processing the
Indian request of depor ting him, said Singh.
Elaborating on his role a bit, the home secretary said Fasih used
to involve in providing shelters to other Indian Mujahideen cadres and acting as communicators for the group using different
channels.
Fasih, after being in detention for five months in Saudi Arabia,
was taken into custody from Delhi airpor t on his arrival from the
Gulf country.
India had sought depor tation of Fasih from Saudi Arabia and also
got an Interpol Red Corner notice issued against him.
Bihar-born Fasih -- an engineer by profession -- is alleged to
have been involved in the Chinnaswamy Stadium blast in Bangalore and the shooting near Jama Masjid (Delhi), both in 2010,
and is wanted by Delhi and Karnataka police.
Fasih's cropped up during the interrogation of suspected IM terrorists arrested during the last nine months.

Shinde accuses Pakistan of helping
terrorists sneak into India
NEW DELHI: Home minister
Sushil Kumar Shinde on Sunday
attacked Pakistan for fomenting
terror in India, accusing the
neighbour of helping infiltration
bids into Indian territory and
organizing attacks on military
convoys in J&K to spread fear.
The development is being
seen as a toughening of stance
by India on cross-border
terrorism after recent attempts of
normalizing ties through bilateral
trade negotiations and visa
agreements.
The recent past had seen
very little terror rhetoric directed
at Pakistan, except for
occasional assertions on
bringing the 26/11 accused to
book. Sunday's statement from
the home minister, however, is an
indication of India's growing
impatience with Pakistan despite
its assurance of cracking down
on terror infrastructure in its
country, sources in the security
establishment said.
Speaking on the sidelines of
a police commemoration day
event in New Delhi, Shinde said,
"We have credible information
that Pakistan is helping terrorists
to enter our territory. We have
intelligence inputs. But we are
alert. We have directed all
concerned to be extra vigilant
during the ongoing festive
season to ensure peace and
safety of citizens. I also appeal
to the people to be on guard and
be extra careful."
The minister further said
terrorists backed by Pakistan had
been organizing attacks on
military convoys in Jammu and
Kashmir to spread fear.
Shinde's statement came a
day after Pakistani troops
opened fire on Indian posts
across the Line of Control (LoC)
in J&K's Poonch district, yet
again violating the ceasefire
agreement with India.
The
incident
where
Pakistani troops fired 600 rounds
between 10.30 pm and 11.30 pm
on Friday is being seen as an
attempt to help militants infiltrate
into the Valley. "It is a classic
way of diverting attention of
Indian troops guarding the
border. Militants take advantage
of this to sneak into India," said
an official from the security
establishment. For the past week,
Pakistani troopers have been
targeting Indian positions on
the LoC as well as the
international border. On October
16, three civilians, including a
pregnant woman, were killed in
Pakistani firing in the Uri sector
of the Kashmir Valley.
According to sources,
Pakistan has violated the
ceasefire agreement with India on
at least 275 occasions since 2006.
While 2010 recorded 56 cases of
ceasefire violations by Pakistan,
the figure stood at 57 for 2011.
In 2012, 47 such cases have been
recorded, indicating that there is
no let-up in efforts from across
the border to help infiltration
despite civilian governments on
both sides working to normalize
ties.
"India has been refraining
from making open accusations
against Pakistan and trying to
work on things through bilateral
talks.
However,
despite
assurances from the civilian
government, elements in the
Pakistani establishment have
continued anti-India activity.
Perhaps, a mix of posturing and
negotiations is essential to push
Pakistan to act," said an official
SITUATION IN J&K CONDUCIVE FOR PHASED
AFSPA REVOCATION: OMAR ABDULLAH
SRINAGAR: J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday maintained that the
situation in the state was conducive for partial revocation of the draconian
Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) that gives security forces sweeping
powers to shoot to kill, detain people with warrants and immunity from
prosecution.
"I will continue to pursue the mission of withdrawal of the AFSPA even if
Army has publically expressed its reservation for lifting the law. I will still stress
for the phased withdrawal of the law from some parts of the state," Omar told
reporters on the sidelines of a function.
He said the government should have made more progress for its withdrawal
given the improved situation in the state over a period of time. ``Militancy in
Kashmir is at an all time low and there has been a reduction in the number of
casualties as well,'' he said. "There are areas in the state where you do not
require Army for operations and as such this is high time to revoke the law.''
The CM's statement comes days after Union home minister Sushil Kumar
Shinde ruled out the AFSPA revocation and a terror strike on Srinagar outskirts
that killed one civilian.

Congress will never use evidence
against kin of Vajpayee, Advani:
Digvijaya Singh
NEW DELHI: Keeping up his attack mode, Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh on Monday let it be known that the UPA
government had "material" against the kin of former PM Atal
Bihari Vajpayee and his ex-deputy L K Advani. While confirming
that the evidence against the relatives of Vajpayee and Advani
had the potential to embarrass the two leaders, he however said
the government or the Congress would never go public with it.
At the same time, Singh, in an interview to a news channel,
denied that the graft allegations brought against Rober t Vadra
had hur t the Gandhis, saying DLF and Haryana government had
already issued point-by-point rebuttals.
"What is the nexus between Vadra and Haryana government run
by the Congress? Has Sonia Gandhi ever spoken about Vadra to
the chief minister or ministers... you cannot hang Sonia Gandhi
with your allegations for an act which she has not done," Singh
said. The point in bringing up the "material" against Vajpayee and
Advani's kin was clear: Singh possibly wanted to convey to the
BJP to tread with caution in amplifying the corruption allegations
brought against Vadra by civil society activists.
The BJP reacted by attacking Singh for deflecting attention from
what it described as the core issue of corruption. "He is himself
facing charges of irregularities in land allotment as shown by a
recent MP high court order and yet he is talking like this,'' par ty
spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.
INDIAN NAVY OFFICER KILLS
SELF TO ‘FEEL DEATH’
KOCHI: An officer was found dead with a bullet injury to his head
at INS Dronacharya, the Navy's arms training base, at For t Kochi
here on Sunday morning.
The Navy identified the deceased as sub-lieutenant Arun Kumar
(27), a member of the Quick Reaction Team. He was a resident of
Balaji Nagar Main Road at Peringalathur in Chennai. After preliminary investigation, authorities said the officer had used his
service pistol to commit suicide. Police said a suicide note was
found at the scene. "I want to feel death. No one is responsible,"
a police officer quoted from the note. "The officer has expired of a
self-inflicted bullet injury," the Navy said, adding that an inquiry
was on into the incident. Kumar, a bachelor, was on duty at the
time of incident. "Around 10.20am, the guards heard a gun going
off in the rest room near the entrance of INS Dronacharya. They
rushed in, and found Kumar sitting in a chair with blood oozing
out of his head and mouth. They immediately shifted him to the
medical unit on the premises, but he was pronounced dead,"
police said. The deceased had star ted his shift at 8am. A police
team led by For t Kochi circle inspector N R Jayaraj inspected the
scene and registered a case of unnatural death.

PAKISTAN HAS FAILED IN PROTECTING THE OBAMA TRUMPS ROMNEY IN
RIGHT OF EDUCATION FOR GIRLS: UNESCO 3RD PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE
NEW DELHI/BUREAU NEWS: Even as the joint
statement from the team of doctors from the Queen
Elizabeth and Birmingham Children's hospitals
described Pakistan's teenage rights activist Malala
Yousufzai's condition as "comfortable and stable"
on Friday, a recent United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco)
report revealed some startling facts about how the
country has failed in protecting the right of
education for girls and in reducing gender
inequality. While Pakistan Government announced Sitara-e-Shujaat,
one of country's highest civilian awards for bravery, to 14-year-old
Malala who was shot in the head by the Taliban for speaking out against
the militants, the Unesco report stated that Pakistan, unlike others in
the region such as India, Nepal and Bangladesh, has failed to reduce
gender gaps over time. The report stated that there are over three million
girls in Pakistan who are out of school. Indicating at the global outcry
and support to Malala, Pauline Rose, director of the Global Monitoring
Report (GMR) on Education for All (EFA) said: "It's tragic that it took
violence for the world's attention to turn to the difficulties girls face in
getting to school in Pakistan. In the Swat district, where Malala is from,
less than a third of girls are enrolled in school, leaving two thirds at
home with little chance of fulfilling their dream. It is also a scandal to
ignore girls' education when we know it benefits not just that one
girl, but also has a huge impact on their household's health and
income, and ultimately the future peace and prosperity of their
country." According to the Unesco's 10th Education for All Global
Monitoring Report released on Tuesday, Pakistan is
doing far worse in reducing gender gaps in
comparison to other countries in the region. The
report stated that 78% of the poorest girls were out
of school in 1991 in Pakistan, a figure which has
only reduced to just 62% today (around 2/3). India,
meanwhile, which had similar rates of the poorest
girls out of school in 1992 (66%), has more than
halved that to just 30% according to latest data.
Likewise, Nepal has dropped the rates from 52% to
22% and Bangladesh from 44% to 9%. Rose said: "The news of the
attack on Malala in Pakistan is a tragedy. She was standing up for
the right of education for girls in the country, rights which are not
yet being respected. There are still over three million girls out of
school in the country today."
"This is not the first time that insurgent groups have attacked
education infrastructure in Pakistan. Often, as seen in Afghanistan,
girls' schools are a particular target. Failing to respond to such attacks
as seen in Pakistan yesterday will only engender further fear among
parents over sending their children to school, of children going to school
and of teachers turning up to take classes," added Rose. According to the
GMR statistics on Pakistan there are five million children out of school in
Pakistan today, three million of them are girls. And just 31% of girls are
enrolled in primary school in Swat District exactly who Malala was fighting
for. According to EFA GMR analysis, 56% of poorest girls in KhyberPakhtunkhwa have never been to school. "All too often, due to conflict, the
education of girls and boys is left off the list of priorities.
BOTH AGREE DRONE ATTACKS ON
PAK SHOULD CONTINUE
WASHINGTON: Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney was
"all over the map" and White House incumbent Barack Obama was all over
him as the two contenders to lead the careworn superpower for the next four
years struggled to provide a vision for the world in their third and final debate
before the November 6 polls.
President Obama was widely seen as handily winning the debate that focused mostly on foreign policy, mainly on account of the incumbency advantage that gave him better insight into complex ground situations and allowed
him to express it with greater clarity in his summations. A CBS insta-poll
found that 53 percent of uncommitted voters thought Obama won the final
debate, while 23 percent gave it to Romney. 24 percent were undecided.
But Mitt Romney was no mug on foreign policy, and projected a degree of
authority, although he failed to articulate a clear or different vision. He seemed
to agree substantially with the Obama foreign policy, differing only in tone,
emphasis, and nuance. The social critic and comic Bill Maher joked that
Romney's entire debate strategy was to say what Obama said, except it
came from a white guy. In fact, at one point, while talking on Iran, President
Obama needled his rival, saying, "there have been times, Governor...where
it sounded like you thought that you'd do the same things we did but you'd say
them louder and somehow that would make a difference."
It was one of several swipes an aggressive Obama took at Romney, who
was clearly disadvantaged by not being in executive command and have
bragging rights over achievements such as nailing Osama bin Laden. Obama,
in turn, managed to deflect criticism of things that haven't gone better by
projecting it as a work in progress. Although Romney disavowed the
boilerplate muscular Republican foreign policy, at one point saying "we cannot kill ourselves out of this mess,"Obama called his rival's policy prescriptions "wrong and reckless." The area where Romney took the sharpest hit was in defense, traditionally a strong Republican talking point.
The Obama camp had evidently prepared well to counter Romney's
familiar critique about the U.S military being downsized and its Navy
reduced to its smallest size since 1917.

They said Nishan and his three accomplices forcibly took Shruti
away and injured her parents besides firing into the air but Shruti
did not object to this. Sources said the police was in a fix because
the accused in the case chose to go their separate ways after
abducting Shruti. The police had learnt from one of the accused who was
arrested immediately after the abduction that Nishan and Shruti had
boarded a bus to Moga. The trail, however, went cold after that. The police
got back on their trail after the couple sent letters through a courier company in Paharganj. Police teams scoured CCTV footage from the Delhi
railway station and learnt that the couple had boarded a train to Goa. The
couple was sighted in Goa the day Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh
Badal held a press conference on the issue. But as the police did not know
where they were putting up, it took them two more days to locate them.
Shruti has been sent to the Nari Niketan in Jalandhar where women
constables have been posted to ensure she does not escape. Nishan will
have to face the music for forcibly entering the Sachdevas' residence,
injuring the family and opening fire. He may get relief on the charge of
raping Shruti with police verification revealing that the couple had
solemnised their marriage. The family has apparently misled people
as well as media about the relationship between the couple. The
agitators were also not fully informed about the case.

DIVORCE: WHAT U NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
YOUR HOUSE, YOUR MORTGAGE AND TAXES
D
ivorce is a tough
situation which opens
up many emotional
and financial issues to be
solved. One of the most
important decisions is what to
do about the house.
In the midst of the heavy
emotional and financial
turmoil, what u need most is
some non-emotional, straight
forward specific answers.
Once you know how a
divorce affects your home.
Your mortgage and taxes,
critical decisions are easier.
Neutral, third party
information can help you
make logical, rather than
emotional decisions.
Probably the first decision is
whether you want to continue
to living in the house. Will the
familiar surroundings bring
you comfort and emotional
security or unpleasant
memories? Do you want to
minimize change by staying
whore you are, or sell your
home and move to a new
place that offers a new start?
Only you can answer these
questions, but there will
almost certainly be some
financial repercussions to
your decision process. What
can you afford? Can you
manage the old house on
your new budget? Is
refinancing possible? Or is it
better to sell and buy? How
much house can you buy on
your new budget? The
purpose of this report is to
help you ask the right
questions so you can make
informed decisions that will
be right for your situation.
4 options:
You have 4 basic housing
options when in the midst of
a divorce:
1. sell the house now and
divide up the proceeds.
2 buy out your spouse.
3 have your spouse buy you
out.
4 retain your ownership.
It's important for you to
understand the financial
implications of each of these
scenarios.
SELL THE HOUSE NOW
AND DIVIDE UP THE
PROCEEDS:
Your primary consideration
under these circumstances is
to maximize your home's
selling price. We can help you
avoid the common mistakes
most homeowners make which
compromise the outcome. As
you work to get your financial
affairs in order, make sure you
understand what your net
proceeds will be- i.e. after
selling expenses, and after
determining what your split
may not be 50/50, but rather
may depend on the divorce
settlement the source of the
original down payment, and
the legislative property laws
in your area.
BUY OUT YOUR SPOUSE:
If you intend to keep the
house yourself, you'll have to
determine how you'll continue
to meet your monthly
financial obligations, if you
now only have one salary. If
you used two incomes to
quality for the old loan,
refinancing on your own
might be a challenge.
HAVE YOUR SPOUSE BUY
YOU OUT:
If you are the one who is
leaving you have the
opportunity to start again in
new surroundings with cash
in your pocket. However, be
aware that if the old home,
loan is not refinanced, most
lenders will considers both
you and your spouse as
original co-signers to be liable
for the mortgage. This liability
may make qualifying for a new
mortgage difficult for you if
you decide to purchase a
home, even though you won't
have legal ownership.
RETAIN JOINT
OWNERSHIP:
Some divorcing couples
postpone a financial decision
with respect to the home and
retain joint ownership for a
period of time even though
only one spouse lives there.
While this temporary
situation means you have no
immediate worries in this
regard, keep may change from
the time of your divorce to
the time of the ultimate sale.
WHEN YOU DECIDE
TO SELL:
If you and your spouse
decide to sell your home, it
will be important to work
together through a
professional to maximize your
return. Differences aside, you
both should be present when
a listings contract is put
together. Both should be
active in the ultimate
negotiations.
WHEN YOU BUY YOUR
NEXT HOME:
Use the proceeds from
previous home or buy-out to
determine and affordable
price range for your next
home. Maintain a clear focus
on getting the right home to
suit your new situation. You
may wish to review with an
agent who offers a househunting service to help find a
home that matches your new
home-buying criteria.
Do you know of someone who is
looking to buy or sell a home, I'd
love to help them. So when you
come across your friends and
family and co-workers, just give
me a call with their name and
number and I'll be happy to follow
up and take care of them for you.
Because as you know, I'm never
too busy for any of your referrals.
Use old scrap for chic interiors
T
here's more you can do
with your interiors; use
old scrap to make pretty
home decor items We have
moved into an era where all
people can think is about going
green. Recycling is passe. The
trend that has made a buzz now
is upcycling, that is, reusing
vintage products such that you
can make it into something of a
higher value. Basically, it is about
using products for a little more
time before there is place in the
landfill so it can be discarded.
Though greentailing is not all
that hyped up in India as it is
abroad, it sure has grabbed many
an eyeball. Gone are the days,
when all that youth could think
of is draining their brains. A lot
of our youngsters are making a
business out of recycling and
well, what's better when you can
both make money and tell mother
nature that you care.
Upcycling, like mentioned
earlier, is quite a rage in the West,
especially when it comes to home
decor. But fret not! For all of you
who like trying out and
customising goods at home, here
are some fun ideas for you to try
out yourself at home:
1. Bind your old hard cover
books together (side by side),
such that it looks like a plank.
You can use this as a book shelf
and place them on your wall.
This is a funky way of upcycling.
2. To get that rustic look,
you can use cane sieves (the
ones with which your moms and
mom-in-laws sieve rice in) to
make it into a photo-frame. How?
Well, just paint them in funky
ways, give them different
strokes with different hues and
you can paste your photographs
on them before placing them on
the wall. You could also make
a photo wall, by placing many
sieves in different angles
(like if you place one
horizontally, place the other
vertically and otherwise).
3. Use your old coasters
as a wall hanging. Use
colourful ribbons or threads
to tie up the coasters after
they're painted in your style,
and then place them on your
wall. You could do the same
with your tea sieves, by
painting them up and
hanging them on the wall.
4. You can use old baked
beans tins, or beer bottle tins
in many ways. Clean the tins
up and paint it to use it as a
flower vase. You can stack
many a newspaper together,
glue them up together and cut
them such that they make
pretty coasters.
5. Take small boxes, glue
up your favourite magazine
articles on them, and also
sequence the edges to use it
as a showpiece for your desk.
6. You can use tetra pack
containers to make pen stands
by cutting them partially in the
middle. This is a good and easy
way to upcycle.
7. Use your old cartons
and boxes , p a i n t t h e m o r
cover them up with colourful
paper, place sequins on them,
and use the end-product as a
magazine or newspaper holder.
These are just some simple
methods you can use to make
your home decor look both
classy and eco-friendly.
Well, there are a lot more
ways to do the same and
customise your home decor
according to your personal style.
After all, your home should
reflect your personality and what
better way to do up your interiors
your way.

helplessness of the rural poor, brutally displaced in the name of
development, the fruits of which never reach them. Their land, their
forest, their water snatched by their own government to allow big
business to exploit the area and its people further.

In 1973, Chopra founded his own production company, Yash Raj
Films, and launched it with "Daag: A Poem of Love" with the hit
onscreen pair of Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna. However,
in the '80s several films he directed and produced failed to leave
a mark at the box office, notably "Mashaal" and "Vijay". But
Chopra rose like phoenix with the commercially and critically
successful film "Chandni" thus beginning his journey of making
romantic Hindi films. He then directed and produced the cult
classic 'Lamhe' in 1991. His association with Shah Rukh Khan
began with the 1993 romantic psychological thriller film 'Darr',
which turned out to be a superhit with SRK playing the role of
an obsessed lover. Since then, Chopra has directed three more
romantic films, all starring Khan - 'Dil To Pagal Hai' (1997), 'VeerZaara' (2004) and 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' (2012) before he announced
his retirement from directing this year. "I have always had great
experience working with him. He is one actor who has never
asked me what the story is about, how much money he will
charge... whatever amount I send him through cheque he takes
that and rather asks me why did I give such a huge amount,"
Chopra said last month during an interview with Shah Rukh on
his 80th birthday. Shah Rukh has also been a part of films like
'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' (1995), 'Dil To Pagal Hai' (1997),

Student of
the Year
Story: The tracks are ready and the race is on. What's at stake?
Love, friendship and the coveted 'Student of the Year' trophy.
Movie Review:It's KJo-Wala Love! Served fresh and piping hot
from the Dharma college canteen of romance. And it's a high (class)
school that you'd never want to miss a lecture of, ever. Except that it
has its own set of Karan rules. Read the prospectus: 1. Leave your
text-books at home but ensure you're carrying your designer bags
and heels. 2. Drive a Ferrari to school, or if you're poorer, take a bike.
3. Dating, mating, separating and love lessons shall be part of the
syllabus. 4. Girls, don your shortest minis, and guys, rip off the
shirts. Welcome to St. Teresa's. Rest assured, it'll be a well-rounded
entertainment experience.
ST is run by a happy and 'gay' Dean - Yogendra Vashisth (Rishi),
who drools over John Abraham, and when he sees the much-married
hot coach ( Ronit Roy) usko 'coach coach' hota hai!. The hotshot
student of the school is rich brat Rohan Nanda (welcoming Varun
Dhawan), who zips around in his hot-wheels, flirts, and dreams of
being a Rockstar. His childhood sweetheart, another super rich kid,
Shanaya (super filmy intro, Alia! Alia! Alia!), is Ms. Popularity and
Drama Queen (don't miss the red pout) known for her brands and
beauty. Enter (grandly) Abhimanyu (Sidharth), a middle-class boy
with mega dreams, a chalta-phirta KBC (Mr Know-it-all), and the inhouse Milkha Singh.
There's a typical rich-poor division in school, the Richie Rich
Tatas v/s the bechara gareeb Batas. But with Abhimanyu's entry the
competition heats up - With both boys showing ample abs & attitude
(teeny-weeny trunks, for all you drooling women!), chasing the same
gal (Shanaya), and aiming for the same trophy - Student of the Year!
Their equations from friends-to-foes changing quicker than their
school grades. Their muscles rippling more than their egos; the
competition gets tougher and the boys - leaner and meaner. Their
loyal friends adding chaos to campus - Eg. Tanya who tries
everything in the 'date- bait-book' to seduce Rohan (including pushup bras); the Parsi 'Pseudo' - the 'minority report'-card in this bunch;
Jeetu - Rohan's chamcha; tomboy Shruti - Shanaya's other half (minus
her designer do).
This is what we call grandiose debut(s)!!! Karan's definitely
swooshed his cane for this one. The trio has done him proud and
has set a high 'bench-mark'. Varun expresses and emotes with superb
confidence and storms the dance floor with swag. Sidharth stands
equally tall, has amazing screen presence and is man of few words
and many smouldering emotions. Alia wins your heart with her
cuteness, effervescence and naivete. Yes, she reminds you of
Kareena's Poo days (with all that oomph), but she comes into her
own. The chemistry between the three (even outside the lab) grows
on you.
Shabhash! SOTY's supporting cast is brilliant, each have
favourite subjects and score high in those areas. But the star who

Rishi Kapoor simply superb. The
other guy who can
take a bow is the

The film is full
of KJo-isms - it's larger-than-life, colourful, lavish, beautifully shot
and directed. With medleys, dance, drama and everything goodlooking (from cast to couches, dorms to discos).
Vishal-Shekhar have caught the right beat with this high-school
musical, and the songs are as fresh as the leads. The story is simple
and entertains throughout, though it's not the first time this marathon
of an idea has run past the screen. 'SOTY' takes you back to your
books and sinks you in true-blue Bollywood syllabus, following the
'formula' - Two boys, one girl, one glorious trophy and lots of
testosterone. If this one doesn't pump you up with nostalgia, it's
time for you to go back to school already!
Tip Off: You may not like this movie if bubble-gum romances,
picture-perfect worlds and candy-floss clouds are not your idea of a
movie-going experience.
Rishi Kapoor plays Dawood in D Day
A
fter his wonderfully skilled performance as a gay dean in
Karan Johar's Student Of The Year Rishi Kapoor is all set
to play Dawood. The super-versatile Rishi Kapoor
stepping into Dawood's white shoes is indeed a cinematic coup.
It apparently took director Nikhil Advani who has earlier worked
with Rishi Kapoor in Patiala House a good six months to convince
the temperamental Kapoor. Rishi
initially said no. Arshad Warsi
was being considered for
Dawood's role . But Advani had
his heart set on Rishi Kapoor.
And he finally got him. After Saif
Ali Khan in Agent Vinod and
Salman Khan in Ek Tha Tiger it's
Arjun Rampal who plays a RAW
agent in D Day. Arjun is mighty
kicked by the prospect of working with Rishi Kapoor. "I've never
worked with him before, wanted to for a very long time. Finally I
am getting the chance. Another actor in D Day I seriously wanted
to work with is Irrfan Khan. I can't wait to get started." D Day
takes off in September.

Kabir also can't help getting close to the activists; begins

confusion in Kabir's heart intensifies dangerously until he is
on the horns of a ghastly dilemma. Who does he support now?
Who does he fight? He finds himself in a chakravyuh from
which there is no retreat now.
And yet, before Kabir can make one last desperate attempt to
resolve this with Adil, events hurtle him into making choices
that would put him at war with him. A war that would change
the future of the region. A war that can only end when one of
them destroys the other.

Devgn turns Shayar again with Son of Sardaar
F
ilmaker Ashwni Dhir is back with this Diwali's most awaited
release 'Son Of Sardaar'. The
film's music which has been
climbing the chartbusters has
recently released a melodious track
called 'Bichdaan' which has been
sung marvelously by Rahet Fateh
Ali Khan and music given by none
other than Himesh Reshammiya!
Incidentally 'Bichdaan' is Ajay
Devgn's favorite song from Son Of
Sardaar and is very close to his
heart..In the beginning of the Song
Ajay has even lend his voice by
rendering a shayari , "Bichad Ke
Tujh Se Ab Muh Ko Marna Hai Ye Tajurba Aisi Zindagi Me Karna
Hai". Last he was heard lending his voice to a song was in 'Diljale'
movie which released in 1996 and it had
become a rage amongst his fans.In this song
with Madhu in Shaam hai Dhuan Dhuan he
says "Arzoo Jhooth hai Kahaani hai, Arzoo
ka fareb khanna nahi, Khush Jo rehna ho
zindagi mein tumhein, Dil Kisi se kabhi
laganna nahi'" Ajay Devgn's rendition is
powerful to say, a deep hard hitting voice
which would make you sit back and go
through the same what he personifies so
beautifully on-screen. The song and
especially the Shayari is quite appreciated and
is receiving spectacular response from the
industrywallahs and the fans. 'Son of Sardaar'

for him to meet with a fatal accident whilst riding. Small wonder then,
that Gordon-Levitt needed 31 stitches in his right arm while filming
the movie. Wilee's also got competition, in the form of the muscular
and almost comical Manny (Wole Parks), who has his eye on Vanessa.
But this love triangle is put on the back-burner one day, when

menacing bad cop Bobby Monday (very convincingly played by
Michael Shannon), who has a nasty gambling habit coupled with a
single-minded,almost obsessive need to get his hands on that

help explain situations and embellish the story quite nicely. The
conversations between Wilee and Vanessa however, as they zip,
dodge and weave their way through traffic come across as
unnecessary and cheesy. There's the obligatory moral dilemma
thrown in too. That aside, Premium Rush is fairly coherent, the bike
stunts are cool and the film is filled with fast-paced chases that will

It's time for Sehwag and Gambhir to perform, says Kapil Greig suffering
from lung cancer
T
he Indian Test team has been hurt by the misfiring opening
duo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, arguably, the
country's greatest ever opening combo. Sample this:
Gambhir's last Test hundred came in January 2010 while Virender
Sehwag is yet reach the three figure mark since demolishing New
Zealand in November 2010. The concern is beginning to get bigger.
For former captain Kapil Dev, it's high time that the duo performs.
"It's definitely worrying with two batsmen of that calibre not
delivering for such a long period. They have made huge reputations
and they have to go out there and defend it or else it will become a
worry for the team," Kapil said on Friday. Former India spinner
Maninder Singh asked, "Hasn't Sehwag given enough hints over
the last year that he wants to bat in the middle-order? The team
management needs to talk to him and know why he is saying this.
Keeping in mind the tour to South Africa next December, it will be
worthwhile to have him down the order and have someone like
Ajinkya Rahane opening the innings in India. Sehwag's reflexes
have clearly slowed down and we can't expect him to deliver in
South Africa." Maninder added that Gambhir has put pressure on
himself by making tall claims.
"Gambhir has put too much pressure on himself. He has passed
comments during the off-season that he was ready for Test captaincy.
And that adds to the pressure. He must go back to the people who
have groomed him in the past and sort out the problems." Gambhir
has, in the recent past, often got out playing his favourite dab shot
towards the third man. His IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders' assistant
coach Vijay Dahiya, though, maintained that Gambhir was a master
of that stroke. "Gautam has scored a lot of runs with that shot and
he is really good at it. Now that he has started to lose his wicket
playing that stroke, it has glared up. His problem is more psychological.
He played well in the IPL when he had an uncluttered mind," Dahiya
has said before leaving for the Champions League T20. With the
middle-order wearing an inexperienced look, the presence of both
Gambhir and Sehwag in the line-up is crucial. Former India opener
Chetan Chauhan agrees. "You can't expose an inexperienced batting
line-up at one go. It's unfortunate that both have been out of form
together but they are class players," Chauhan said.
CLT20: Delhi beat Perth to stay alive
NEW DELHI/BUREAU NEWS:
The Delhi Daredevils made a meal
of what should have been a simple
run-chase in their match against
the Perth Scorchers at the
Newlands Stadium. Needing 122
to win and go on top of the table
in Group B, the Daredevils lost
four of their top order batsmen
cheaply, yet got past the finish line
in the final over to win by three
wickets. Virender Sehwag, the only
batsman who seemed to have
cracked the code of batting on the
difficult Newlands track, scored a
half-century, while Irfan Pathan’s
14 was the second-best score of
the innings.
In pursuit of 122, the Delhi
Daredevils
lost
Mahela
Jayawardene, Unmukt Chand,
Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor
to single-digit scores to leave
Virender Sehwag to steer the team
through. The 34-year-old batted
sensibly, held one end firm and
went about in a manner one
doesn’t normally associate with
him. Until he was out in the middle,
the Delhi Daredevils were
definitely favourites.
But once he holed out to the
man patrolling the sweeper cover
boundary in the 16th over, it put
the Western Australian side in
front. On a difficult track, where
the ball wasn’t coming on to the
bat, Sehwag batted for 44
deliveries and scored 52 (the only
half-century of the match) in an
innings in which he ran 21 singles,
three twos and hit only four
boundaries and a six. His 34-run
partnership with Irfan Pathan for
the fifth wicket was the highest in
the Daredevils’ innings. DD needed
nine runs of the last over, and Ajit
MI PULLED UP FOR SLOW OVER-RATE
Harbhajan fined USD 1500, rest fined USD 750 each
NEW DELHI: The Mumbai Indians were
last night fined for failure to bowl the
required number of overs in the time
available during the match against the
Chennai Super Kings at the Wanderers
in Johannesburg. At the end of the
innings and once allowances had been
taken into consideration, the Mumbai
Indians were assessed to be one over
short of the required rate. Mumbai
Indians captain, Harbhajan Singh, received a US$1 500 fine while each
player was fined US$750. If Mumbai repeats this offence during its
next game of the tournament, a one-match ban will be imposed on
Singh. The Mumbai Indians lost their match by six runs and will now
face the Sydney Sixers in their final group match in Durban on Monday.
Agarkar and Pawan Negi hit
boundaries off the first and third
deliveries to seal the deal for their
team. The Delhi Daredevils finished
with 123 for 7 in 19.3 overs. The
Perth Scorchers bowlers were
impressive.
The left-arm spinner Michael
Beer was the best of the lot (picking
up the wickets of the dangerous
Pietersen and Taylor), while Nathan
Rimmington and Joe Mennie also
picked up two wickets each.
Nathan Coulter-Nile chipped in with
the wicket of Naman Ojha, while
Brad Hogg mixed his variations well
and troubled the Daredevils
batsmen consistently in his four
over spell. Earlier in the afternoon,
though Herschelle Gibbs’ six off
Irfan Pathan was the first scoring
stroke of the innings, the Scorchers
batsmen generally struggled to
come to terms with the sluggish
nature of the pitch. Gibbs tried to
create some momentum, but he
only managed to drag the ball back
onto his stumps.
Shaun Marsh and Simon
Katich continued to accumulate
runs over the next few overs, but
clearly even they felt the pressure
of not scoring runs quickly enough.
Marsh in particular was jittery and
attempted to break the shackles on
several occasions without too
much luck. The pair batted together
for 67 deliveries, but could only
accumulate 73 runs in that period.
The platform had been set and just
when it was time to build on it, the
Perth Scorchers would lose both
batsmen; Marsh (39 off 41 balls)
was the first to go when he miscued
a pull and holed out to the man at
midwicket. Katich (34 off 33 balls)
followed soon after when he drove
Agarkar through cover, but Mahela
Jayawardene was alert to the
opportunity and completed a
sharp catch.

Kevin Pietersen added to England's
Test squad for India tour
T
F
ormer England captain and commentator Tony Greig has
revealed that he is suffering from lung cancer. Greig was
initially diagnosed with bronchitis in May this year and then
gathered further knowledge during the Australia-Pakistan series.
Greig was quoted as saying to Australia's Sunday Telegraph that
he would undergo surgery to ascertain the extent of the illness. "I
have had a few scrapes in my life and this is another one," the
South Africa-born Greig, 66 was quoted as saying to the Sunday
Telegraph. "Vivian (his wife) and I are going to put the boxing
gloves on and fight this like we've never fought anything before."
At this stage Greig informed that he is not aware of his
commentating commitments for this summer. "At the moment it is
totally up in the air. My priority, 100 percent, is my family. They
will come first," said Greig.
he England selectors announced that Kevin Pietersen has been added to the Test squad for the
forthcoming tour of India. The decision was made after Kevin Pietersen met with Andy Flower,
Alastair Cook and a number of other senior players and members of England team management in
Oxford earlier this week. ECB Managing Director - England Cricket, Hugh Morris said: "We were keen that
Kevin should hold a series of face-to-face meetings with team management and senior players before the
Test squad departs for the UAE and India next week. "The meetings were constructive and cordial and all
outstanding issues have been resolved. All the England players and management are now keen to draw a line
under this matter and fully focus on the cricketing challenge that lies ahead in India." ECB National Selector
Geoff Miller added: "We are pleased to welcome a player of Kevin's proven international calibre back into the
Test squad for such an important Test series. As we anticipate that Ian Bell will return home for the birth of his
first child around the time of the 2nd Test in Mumbai, the team will benefit from having an extra batsman in the
squad and all players who were originally selected for the tour will fly out as planned next week. Kevin will
join up with the squad as soon as his Champions League commitments are complete."

Mitchell Marsh’s 18-ball 20 – at a strike-rate of 111.11 – was the
quickest knock of the innings. The Perth Scorchers only managed
to score 22 runs in the last four overs and finished at 121 for 5. Ajit
Agarkar, who bowled a disciplined line and length and helped in
building pressure in the middle overs, was the pick of the Delhi
Daredevils bowlers. Morne Morkel though would be the most
successful one as he ended up with figures of three for 19 from his
four overs. Brief Scores: Perth Scorchers 121-5 in 20 overs (Shaun
Marsh 39, Simon Katich 34, Morne Morkel 3-19) lost to Delhi
Daredevils 123-7 in 19.3 overs (Virender Sehwag 52, Michael Beer 218) by 3 wickets. Man of the Match: Ajit Agarkar for his economical
spell of 4-0-14-2. For more information, visit www.clt20.com.
