Hello! From Mrs. Kolbow
What a great first semester of Physical Education!
Students have worked hard perfecting old skills and learning new
ones. Kindergarteners have become acclimated to the gym and
all the safety rules which apply to the "BIG" space. They have
worked hard on their locomotor skills, Pillo Polo, "spider" hands
for dribbling to name a few activities.
Older students participated in soccer, flag football,
basketball, Presidential Fitness, the "favorite" Mission Impossible,
and a variety of crazy, fun games and warm-ups.
The Sixth through Eighth grade boys had the opportunity
to run all four Presidential mile runs outside due to the wonderful
fall weather.
What is ahead for second semester? Sadly, saying
goodbye to my middle school boy classes! However, I now am
saying "Hello" to the middle school girls, who will get to enjoy
floor hockey, tumbling, dance, volleyball, field hockey and the
Jump Rope for Heart. Looking forward to a wonderful second
semester! - Myra Kolbow, Physical Education Teacher
Protecting God’s Children Workshop

upcoming workshop in the area is now scheduled for:
Saturday, February 6, 9 a.m., St. Edith Parish, Livonia
Visit www.virtusonline.org for the full schedule
and to register. The certification never expires.

Holy Family Homeless Shelter Week
January 30-February 6

Medium-XL). Holy Family will
be hosting the shelter at the
end of January, and The First
United Methodist Church will be hosting in
February. This is a very big undertaking for both
churches, which is why we will assist them with
their programs. Please attach a
copy of your receipt to the socks
and underwear, so that it can be
exchanged if they run short of a
particular size.

MINUTE
Project Rachel
January 22 marked the
anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. Millions of abortions have been
performed in the United States since the U.S. Supreme Court’s
landmark decision in 1973.
Many women who choose to abort a pregnancy feel
separated from God, their families, and even themselves. Gifts to
the Catholic Services Appeal help the Archdiocese of Detroit
minister confidentially to all those who have been touched by an
abortion experience through Project Rachel.
A post-abortion healing ministry, Project Rachel offers
support, love and compassion of Christ to men and women
suffering feelings of loss, guilt, anxiety, depression, and
loneliness — all common following an abortion.
For more information about CSA-funded programs,
services, and ministries, go to www.AOD.org.
Today, we sing two songs written by the
same composer, Bernadette Farrell. It was
not intentionally planned that way, but that
they pertained to the readings so well.
Jesus is the Word of God made flesh, the
Messiah that prophets had foretold, the one
who has come to make things new. We are God’s chosen
people who will take up the torch and continue to spread the Good
News of God’s love and salvation. Bernadette Farrell is a British
Catholic liturgical composer since the 1970’s working in
conjunction at times with her husband, Owen Alstott. Her music
is a response to the need for social justice and reflects her active
commitment to continue the work of Jesus’ Gospel message in the
community. She hopes to inspire people to leave the world a better
place for our children. As you sing her lyrics, you can
see where her interest lies. Another one of her works,
and one of our favorites, is “Christ Be Our Light.”

Fifth Sunday Rosary Program
Sunday, January 31, after the 9:30 a.m. Mass
In his apostolic letter Rosarium
Virginis Mariae, Pope St. John Paul II
quotes St. Louis de Montfort reminding
us that, “Our entire perfection consists in
being conformed, united and
consecrated to Jesus Christ. Now, since
Mary is of all creatures the one most
conformed to Jesus Christ, it follows that among all
devotions that which most consecrates and conforms
a soul to our Lord is devotion to Mary, His Holy
Mother…” The rosary is one of the simplest and
dearest devotional prayers available to all of us.
Once again, the Knights of Columbus will
gather to pray the rosary as they continue their
2015-2016 initiative Building the Domestic Church: The
Family Fully Alive. The Fifth Sunday Rosary program,
offered to inspire and demonstrate greater devotion
to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, continues at Our Lady
of Victory! Similar to the previous rosaries, a onepage handout with all of the rosary prayers will be
made available, as well as extra rosaries for those
who want to participate. January 25-26: 8:30-10 a.m. & 2:30-4 p.m.

2016 OLV Spring Sports Registration
Ends January 31
Registration is open to all parishioners
interested in playing CYO Baseball or
Softball (boys and girls in grade 5-8) or
Lacrosse (boys only in grade 5-8) this spring.
Registration ends next Sunday, January 31.
Practice starts in March. The number of teams
and grade composition of each team will be determined by
the number of registrants.
Registration does not
guarantee a position on a team and try-outs may be
conducted if the number of registrants exceeds the number
of openings. A student must submit a current health
status/physical (dated after April, 2015) to be considered
for a team.
If you are interested in coaching a team,
please visit the website and complete a Coach’s
Application form under Sports Registration.
You will be notified early in 2016. See you in
the Spring!

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Thank You!!
We are grateful to the OLV faith community for
assisting the Faith Formation Program as our needs
changed and more volunteers were required. We now
have all of the Catechists and aides we need to teach our
children during their weekly sessions. For those who
have come forward we ask God to bless you and for those
who held us in prayer may you also know of God’s abundance!
Scripture Reflection
In this weekend’s passage from Luke, Jesus in reading the words of
Isaiah gives notice as to who he is and what his ministry was to be. Unlike
those who build their lives on wealth and influence He came to serve and give
rest to all who suffer and most importantly to proclaim a year acceptable to
the Lord. In a world that can hurt from natural disaster, economic distress,
and civil unrest the words of Jesus in these passages are words of comfort and
challenge.
An “acceptable year,” in Jewish tradition is a Sabbath Year that was
to be granted every seventh year. During this time the land was left fallow
and food stores were to be shared with all. It was a time when rich and poor
would trust in God’s ability to provide for their every need and acknowledge
that the land and all that each owned first belonged to God.
Our world is very different than the one of Jesus. A Sabbath Sunday
has become a challenge and a sabbatical year for most a luxurious dream. We
live in a world that teases us with billion dollar lotteries and the lure of riches
at every turn. Our economy depends upon our very ability to buy more than
we really need to the point that we forget to give due thanks to God for the
gifts he has given and the essential blessings we enjoy. When we begin to
recognize just how rich we are we come in touch with God’s abundance and
realize that we as his children are asked to share that with others.
As a family this week, talk about the most important things in life;
family and friends, the availability of food, services and the basic necessities
of life. Give thanks to God for that and more! Then talk about those in our
world both near and far who are left behind. What can you as families do to
alleviate some of their suffering? Make it a family initiative to find one way in
which to serve those in need. How can you provide some of the essentials for
them? How can you be a living sign of God’s love and make a year acceptable
to the Lord a reality? Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and enjoy the
blessings it will bring!
Christ the Good Shepherd Preschool program
As the needs of the atrium grow, we would like to invite
more adults to assist in the preschool program as an aide or a
Catechist. If you are an adult and love to work with smaller
children, please give contact Mary Ellen Skene at (248)
349-2559 or email. We will be happy to discuss this with you!

Prayer
Blessed Frederic Ozanam was a man of prayer. He
understood it as the lifeline and foundation for who he
was and what he did. Prayer nourished his life and
ministry. Upon waking and falling asleep he would make
the sign of the cross and pray the Bible on which he
meditated about half an hour. In the last years of his life,
he attended daily Mass for support and consolation.
• As Vincentians at OLV, our meetings begin and end with
prayer as well as during home visits and phone calls,
thereby, invoking God’s graces for strength to develop
our ministry skills and the service of truth within the
Society.

power is never out nor the office closed at our STEPHEN
