Dear Parents and Guardians,
“For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Mark 10:45
Our mighty Year 12 students said goodbye to the College last Friday with a wonderful mass and
‘concert’. I thank Fr Roy for running our liturgy and commend all the staff and students coordinated by
Mr Graham who assisted in this important College celebration. Singing was great and student
participation was most pleasing. The Year 12 class of 2012 demonstrated how to leave a school with
dignity. The student had fun yet recognised the wonderful contribution the school has made to their
lives. The concert was entertaining and demonstrated what a great community we have.
Last night I was entertained by the Year 7 production of the “Night of the Notables”. Coordinated by
Mr Bock, student were required to dress up as a significant past or present member of society and talk
about their lives. I met Oprah Winfrey, Abraham Lincoln, Glen McGrath and Ned Kelly! It was a most
entertaining evening and I thank the students for all their efforts.
Mr Michael Lee, Principal of St Mary MacKillop College, Canberra concluded his visit to the school
on Wednesday. He spoke at a staff meeting and College assembly and made a short address to the
College Board. He is now in the process of developing a report that he will present to me and the
Catholic Education Office as a way of identifying areas that may need to be considered to improve my
leadership as well as strengthen the College as it moves forward. This feedback is welcome and I look
forward to working with our school community on the recommendations identified.
I commend to all in our school community the College website. Effort continues to be made to make
the website as informative and up to date as possible. It reflects current events and has many
photographs and student contributions to admire. Last week ABC National did a report on the College
and this can be located on the website in the Media Releases section. I am sure that the school
community will find this most interesting.
Next week we have our Year 10, 2013 Information Evening and I would recommend this to ALL Year
9 students and their families. It will be an important evening for students to get a clear understanding of
Senior College and programmes of study.
Another reminder of the Christmas Market Day on the 23rd of November! We will be having a number
of Musical items across the evening including contributions from some of our Primary Feeder schools.
A great night is in store and I encourage you all to come along.
A note to families that school will end for Term 4 on Wednesday December 5th. Students will be
engaged in class activities up until this day. It is expected that all students 7—9 attend school up to this
day.
Wishing you all a good week.

Official opening of the Darwin Language Centre in Ludmilla.
On the 17th October, the Darwin Language Centre in Ludmilla was officially opened by the
Honourable Chief Minister Terry Mills. The international students from St John’s Catholic College
were invited to perform the Australian national anthem with the angklung. They did a fantastic job
and we had many positive comments about their performance. Other performers were the gamelan
players from the Indonesian Consulate, a Balinese dance by the Balinese community and a Chinese
dance, entitled Mushroom Picking, by the students studying Chinese in the Darwin Language
Centre. There was a good medley of different cultures at the opening and everyone enjoyed the
performances and the variety of foods from different cultures. Congratulations to Darwin Language
Centre on their official opening.

Away From Home
By International Student Araminus Omaleng
It was on August 2009 when I first time step my feet in Darwin International Airport.
Such a long way from back home, ‘Walk down from the top of mountains, catching
bus to the town, flying by helicopter to the city and two times changing airplanes’ that
is how I get here.
My first week in Darwin was really shocking day. I was amaze with the development
of the infrastructures, schools, shops, beautiful beaches, gardens, parks, playgrounds,
etc. which these things are I do not often see around my place especially in the village.
I feel like I am in a new world.
My first day in St John’s College was awesome, I found out all my teachers and
friends were all friendly. I was amazed by the school facilities. These include two
ovals, basketball courts, boarding house, computer lab, science labs, each room have
an air conditioner, computers and smart boards. I was really surprised by the smart
board which I never seen in my life. The timetable and the way of selecting subjects
are really far more different compare to back home’s schools. I feel like I got a better
place to live and study. My heart keeps rejoicing for everything.
Nevertheless, as a new student from overseas; lack of confidence, shy and feel giving
up always appears due to my poor English background. However, there is someone
who always whispering in my ears that “You can do this. I am here with you, go for
it”. The sound always keep coming and raising me up until now I become one of the
college leaders.
Home sick was the big problem that I have to face. There was a time where I could not
handle myself to think about the beautiful moment with my family and friends. Missing home, the food, the weather and the people were difficult to forget. However, I
was able to adapt myself within two months. I also feel accepted in the community of
St John’s College; getting involve in every activities and I really enjoy and proud to
be part of St John’s College community.

Some reflections from Br Chris
From the readings for this Sunday (Mk 10) Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside
begging. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, son of David, have pity
on me." And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, "Son of David,
have pity on me."
Reflection: Bartimaeus got his way in the end. Jesus called him and asked what he wanted, and granted him his
sight for his faith and his persistence. If you need help, keep crying out until you get what you need.
Prayer: Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
(This prayer, put together from two different Gospel passages, is called the “Jesus Prayer.” It holds a special
place in the spirituality of Eastern Church (notably the Orthodox Church). Monks and lay people repeat it over
and over in their heart, silently, like a mantra. This leads them into a state of deep openness to God, which they
call the “Prayer of the Heart.”)
Our thoughts also go out to all our Year 12’s preparing for exams. We are praying for you. Go well!

Nicholas:
There is this old man who goes to church and comes into my work every
Sunday morning. I have known him since I was a little boy as Old Jack. Old
Jack for some time now has been nearing the end of his life. I never really took
the time to get to know him until a few months ago when my school choir sang
at mass and he came over to compliment me on my singing. From that point on
every time he came into work he would ask me if I would sing with his choir at
church and I would say yes. This has been the case for many months now and
today I was completely and utterly graced and humbled by Old Jack. Today he
came into work as he always does and he brought me a framed holy picture of
Jesus. He then told me about how he had had the picture for many years and
that it was very special to him. He then said that because none of his children or
grandchildren shared his love for God he wanted to give it to someone he knew
would take care of and cherish it. I thanked him, nearly in tears and he went on
his merry way. I guess what I am getting at is that if you take the time to get to
know God's people then you might just find some of God's grace (in this year of
grace) and you even might make a life long friend.
Shane:
I have had many Grace moments in my life, I call them my "God Moments".
It is amazing to me how once I recognise these certain moments, that I feel a
strong presence of God speaking directly to me. The strongest of these were
at the births of my 2 beautiful boys. I know its so cliche but during that very
first glimpse, I felt the wind simply knocked from me. I just remember total
amazement, joy and responsibility. It was the moment God blessed me with
the gift of Fatherhood and entrusted their precious lives to me. I have taken
that call very seriously and thank Him everyday for this gift.
Other times I feel these "God moments" of grace is when I am drawn to a
beautiful sunset, or watch the face of a student light up with pride in
themselves or when I am expressing myself through my music. Sometimes
these moments are subtle and sometimes they are not. Either way, I am so
glad to be able to recognise and respond to them. I am a very lucky guy and
very thankful for all my many blessings.

The Year 12 students were in early on Friday of last
week having fun on their last official day of lessons
at St John’s.
There was an excellent job of ‘spider webbing’
along the length of the bridge between campuses,
which a few students had fun trying to cross..
All students attended a breakfast and Mass in the
morning, and the Year 12’s then went on to enjoy
their last official day of lessons at the College.
BEST WISHES AND GOOD LUCK TO YOU

NATIONAL NUTRITION WEEK
National Nutrition Week (14-21 October 2012) raises awareness and supports the community to look at
how food and lifestyle choices impact on health.
This year’s theme Water – Tap into it! aims to increase water consumption while decreasing
sugary drink consumption in Australian adolescents.
The consumption of sugary drinks in place of water has risen considerably in recent years. Much evidence now links sugary drink consumption as a risk factor for weight gain and obesity in adolescents.
Evidence also shows the number of adolescents not meeting the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating
recommendations for adequate water intake is high
