Summer 2016 Illuminator Join the fun this summer as we challenge our minds with great reads and programs at the library. This year’s summer reading program encourages everyone to read, listen, or share literature with their family and friends. All ages are welcome to join and may do so online through the library website or stop in the library and register at either of the upstairs reference desks. Participants pick to either read a total number of books or minutes and earn prizes as they do so. The program runs until July 31, 2016 and complete information for each age group is available at the library. Families can log their progress online by accessing the Summer Reading Program link located on the lower right of the library web page at www.apld.info. Family Magic Show featuring Kevin Kelly Wednesday, June 15 - 7:00 p.m. (Registration begins June 1 at 9:00 a.m.) American Eagle Productions presents The Fabulous Fable Factory Will he pull a rabbit out of his hat? Perhaps he’ll levitate one lucky audience member. Come be amazed by the magical illusions of Kevin Kelly. Thursday, June 23 at 11:00 a.m. (Registration begins June 1 at 9:00 a.m.) *Recommended for ages 4 years and older The Fabulous Fable Factory presented by American Eagle Productions tells the story of Monroe; a 12 year old boy who wanders into an abandoned factory and accidentally trips a lever activating the living factory of fable creators. The factory has been idle for 2000 years because it is missing the most important part, a “Moral Maker.” This musical adventure follows Monroe as he helps the fable makers re-create some of Aesop’s most famous fables, such as “The Ant and the Grasshopper,” “The Tortoise and the Hare,” and “The Lion and the Mouse.” Registration is required for all show performances. All ages are welcome unless otherwise noted. Programs, dates, and times subject to change. When registering for a performance please be sure to include everyone who will be attending, adults and infants need to be counted. Thank You! SUMMER PERFORMANCES. Super Awesome Yo-Yo Day (at night) with Mark Hayward Wednesday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m. (Registration begins July 1 at 9:00 a.m.) The lost art of yo-yoing can be found here this evening. We’ll be hosting Mark Hayward who is a yo-yoer and juggler. Don’t miss seeing this all around cool guy who is really good at playing with toys. Jim Gill’s Family Room Tour Monday, June 20 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (Registration begins June 1 at 9:00 a.m.) Get ready to sing, clap, dance and sneeze along during this visit by award-winning musician and author Jim Gill. Jim Gill’s distinctive music play creates the spirit of a family room in the concert hall and is an invitation to children, parents and grandparents to sing and play together! Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles Thursday, July 21 - 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (Registration begins July 1 at 9:00 a.m.) Do you like creatures that creep, slither and hiss? If so, join us for an upclose, live, and extremely interactive experience about reptiles and amphibians from around the world. You’ll laugh as you learn about some of the most misunderstood animals that roam the earth. *Children younger than 3 years-old may find this program to be overwhelming due to content and length. TEEN HAPPENINGS Teen events are for ages 12-19 and require registration unless otherwise noted. We encourage teens to register early. Minimum numbers are often required for programs to run. Field of Dreams CareerShotZ: Your Future in Photography Wednesday, June 8 - 2:00 p.m. Three Day Class - June 28 to 30 - 2:00 p.m. Baseball field, football field or field of flowers: what is your “field of dreams”? This is your opportunity to make a fused glass piece of the field of your choice! Ceramics for You will be here again so you can exercise your creative talents. It’s free but you do need to sign up and space is limited! There’s more to being a pro than great gear, a dark room and flashing lights. Catch a glimpse of three different views of Professional Photography through this three day series of workshops. Your career in photography might start here! Bring your own cameras or practice on one of our Nikon CoolPix. Discover 3D Printing Wednesday, June 15 - 2:00 p.m. Enjoy hands-on participation in this exciting new technology from 3D design to actual printing on the library’s new 3D printer. No previous knowledge needed. Super Smash Bros. Tournament How to Build a Computer Thursday, July 14 - 4:00 p.m. Come and lean what makes your computer tick. In this program, you will learn the basic hardware components that make up a functioning desktop computer. We will have a few computers out so you can put all the parts back into the computer yourself for hands on experience! Friday, June 17, July 22 & August 19 - 4:30 p.m. It’s the one year anniversary of our first Smash Bros. tournament here at the library! In celebration we are having a special doubles tournament in June. Sign up as a team, or individually and we will give you a partner. Anyone ages 14-22 can participate. It’s a special tournament with special prizes for the first place team. Don’t miss this one! It’s an after hours event so make sure you are in the doors by 5:00 p.m. July and August tournaments will be conducted as usual. Cupcake Decorating Thursday, June 23 - 5:30 p.m. Learn all you need to know to create a cupcake masterpiece at this yummy event. This class covers everything from gathering necessary materials, to prepping icing and frosting, and how to apply different basic decorating techniques. All of the supplies will be provided and you will even have a few beautiful goodies of your own to take home! Attendance is limited so please register. We also suggest you bring an apron! Yu-Gi-Oh! Tournament Saturday, July 23 - 12:00 p.m. Let’s make this the best Yu-Gi-Oh! Tournament of the year! Since it’s summer you have plenty of time to set aside a Saturday afternoon for a duel. Top three players get a prize and there are snacks for everyone! Yoga for Teens Three Day Class - July 26, 27 & 28 - 10:00 a.m. SafeSitter Certification Class Sorry but…summer is almost over. Get ready for the start of a new school year with some yoga skills! Join us for an hour morning yoga stretch under the sun. We will focus on balance, posture and breathing to bring about a sense of relaxation. No experience is needed as you will perform at your own level. Feel free to join us for one, two or all three sessions. Class will be held weather permitting. Registration is requested. 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Thursday, June 9, July 7 or August 5 Brave Way Self-Defense Would you know what to do if a child choked while you were baby-sitting? Would you know how to call 911? Handle a nose bleed? Safe Sitters learn all these things and more! This nationally recognized program teaches sitters ages 11-13 how to have fun with children, and how to recognize and respond to medical emergencies. A $25 fee is required at the time of registration, and the sitter must be 11 years old on the day of the class. Please bring a sack lunch. Saturday, July 30 - 2:00 p.m. Are you prepared to defend yourself? The Brave Way program is one of the most effective and easy to learn and use self-defense systems you can find. Brave Way techniques work regardless of your age, size, strength, speed, experience or physical ability. Demos and hands-on instruction will guide you while you learn the techniques. This is a perfect class for teens heading off to college, but anyone age 12 through adult is welcome to join the class. A waiver is required and a ten dollar fee will be charged at the door. TEEN HAPPENINGS_ TEEN ADVISORY COUNCIL Third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. June 16 - July 21 - August 18 Get involved at the library this summer! Join the Teen Advisory Council (T.A.C.). We meet once a month to plan library programs and discuss what you want here at the library. We also talk about books we are reading and enjoy some snacks. This is your chance to get involved, meet new people and express your opinions! Calling all teens to the starting line for this years’ summer reading program. Register online at www.apld.info or at the library. You get a fun prize just for registering for the program! Read books or listen to audio books then record them on paper or online. Complete the program by reading or listening to 6 books or for 600 minutes by July 31, 2016. You can also earn tickets to be entered into a drawing for one of our fabulous teen gift baskets! Earn additional tickets by doing the following: • Read a book or 100 minutes. • Complete trivia quizzes and activity sheets. New quizzes posted in the library every Monday. • Attend a library event • Write a book review • Complete a survey On Friday, July 29 from 8 to 10 p.m. there will be a pool party at the Antioch Aqua Center for anyone registered in the program. Those wishing to attend must preregister at the adult reference desk. ANIME BANQUET Saturday, June 4 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. It’s the end of the school year and that means it’s time for another Anime Club Banquet! Everyone is invited to come and enjoy an evening of fun and activities along with Japanese food. Come dressed as your favorite character to take part in the cosplay contest! This is an after-hours event, so you must be in the door before 5 PM to participate. ANIME CLUB Every Monday from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Yay for summer! But did you know Anime Club still meets? That’s right, every week we’ll be here watching anime, having fun and eating snacks. Why not join us? Open to anyone age 13 and in high school to age 20. ANIME JV Tuesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Don’t forget about JV Anime this summer! That’s right, we will continue to meet throughout the summer. Join us as watch anime, play games and have fun. And of course we’ll have some snacks as well! Then come join other planeswalkers for free open play. We meet the first Saturday of each month from 12-3 p.m. Bring your own deck and a friend or two. Or, just stop by and see what the game is all about. All skill levels are welcome. Open to ages 12 through adult. Get in the game, the game of chess that is! This summer you have the opportunity to exercise your mind the second Tuesday of each month. Whether you are a pro or rookie, we would like to draft you for an evening of chess and cookies! Children must meet the age requirement on the day of activity. Registration begins the first of each month and includes programs within the first week of the following month. Registration is taken online at www.apld.info or by calling 847-395-0874 option 3 Baby Bounce A Note on Programs: Programs and events are free and open to all, but space is limited. Please review our sign-up procedures. • The majority of our programs require registration. See the online or print calendar for more information. • Children must meet the age requirement on the day of activity. • Registration begins on the first of the month and includes the first week of the following month. For example, on February 1 you can register for activities scheduled through March 7. • If for any reason the library is closed on the 1st of the month, sign-up begins on the second day of the month. • You can register online (recommended), by phone or in person. • Please contact us if you have to cancel, so we can move children off the wait list. • When registering for a performance please include everyone in your group including infants and adults. Ages Newborn - 39 months Tiny Tots (Newborn - 19 months) (Ages 15 - 36 months with caregiver) Baby and caregiver are invited to a 15 minute storytime that will include songs and short books followed by 30 minutes of play and socializing. An interactive storytime for tiny tots and their caregiver. This storytime includes short stories, songs, finger plays, flannel boards and a small craft. Monday Mornings - 9:30 a.m. June 6 & 20 - July 11, 18 & 25 August 1, 8, 15 & 29 Mornings - 10:00 a.m. June 27, July 26 & August 30 Wiggles & Walkers (12 months - 3 years with caregiver) (Newborn - 35 months with caregiver) Put on your dance shoes and join us for a rocking family dance party! This 30 minute program will include guided and free dance along with a bit of yoga. Rockin’ Tots Dance Party Join us for this interactive wiggling, giggling good time with fun activities designed to promote early literacy, language development, and a love of books. Tuesday Mornings - 10:00 a.m. June 7, July 5 & 12 August 9, 16 & 23 Family Storytime (Newborn - 5 years with caregiver) Although we welcome younger children, this story time is designed for children ages two-five year olds! All children will listen to stories, sing songs and create a craft to take home. Evenings - 6:30 p.m. June 16, July 19 & August 25 Tuesday, June 28 - 6:30 p.m. Toddler Time (Ages 24-39 months with caregiver) Caregivers are invited to attend an interactive storytime. Children listen to stories, review colors and numbers, work on matching skills, followed by a craft with their caregiver. Songs, finger plays, and flannel board activities will also be included. Thursday Mornings - 10:00 a.m. June 2 & 16 July 14 & 28 August 4, 18 & 25 Painter’s Palette Sibling Storytime (Newborn to 39 months with caregiver) An interactive storytime for families with two or more children aged newborn-39 months. Older siblings will have a chance to bond with their younger sibling by sharing rhymes, songs, and stories. Due to room occupancy limits, please register each child in the family individually. Tuesdays - 10:00 a.m. June 21 & August 2 (Ages 1 ½ - 5 years. 18 - 39 months must attend with caregiver) Love to paint? This is the program for you! Come and sing songs, listen to stories and music, enjoy the parachute, reinforce color recognition, and create a painted craft. Thursday Mornings - 10:00 a.m. June 9, July 21 & August 11 Monday Evening - 6:30 p.m. June 27, July 25 & August 29 Ages 3 - 12 years Walk-in Story Circle (Ages 3 - 5 years) The Friday walk-in is 30 minutes of stories for preschoolers, ages 3-5. Children attend this storytime independently and should be comfortable in the room with other children and without a parent or caregiver. Children must be at least 3 years old. Join our summer reading program and score some prizes when you cross the finish line. This is all it takes to be a reading champRookies (newborn – 35 months) complete 10 out of 25 activities with your favorite caregiver. Major league readers (3 – 12 years) can opt to read 30 books or log 300 minutes. Throughout the summer we’ll have drawings for T-shirts, toys, movie tickets and other cool prizes. (You must be registered in the program to win.) Super Special Kids A Storytime for Special Needs Families A Sensory Storytime (Ages 3 and up with adult) Join us for an interactive storytime adapted for children with special needs. This storytime is designed for children with autism spectrum disorders, sensory integration issues, or other developmental disabilities. If your child has difficulty sitting through one of our other storytimes, this program of stories, songs, and activities might be just what you are looking for. Preschool-level books, songs and movement will be used during this storytime. Juicing for Life Thursday, June 30 - 7:00 p.m. John Murphy of Murphy’s Health Foods and Juice Bar, Inc. Libertyville, IL will discuss the wonderful health benefits of preparing fresh juice from fruits and veggies. You’ll learn the art of combining the best ingredients together and who should juice sparingly; what’s the best equipment and why, as well as the importance of protein and fiber for complete health benefits. Continuing Tai Chi Chih Thursdays-6:00 p.m. August 18 & 25 September 8, 15, 22 & 29 A T’ai Chi Chih® Joy Thru Movement class for ALL practicing students. Emphasis will include introducing the movements eleven through nineteen and refining the movements learned in the Beginning class. Each week the last 45 minutes will be dedicated to a practice of all the known movements. The fee for this class is $20.00 for all 6 sessions To receive the most benefit from the instruction, practice outside of class time is very important. Local Vines and Wines Our local vineyard and winery, Vigneto del Bino, will host a wine-tasting event with vineyard tour, tasting of their wines made from local vines, and a talk about grape growing and wine making in Illinois. The cost of the tasting is $7.00 for six tastings. Must be 21 years old to attend. This program will take place at Vigneto del Bino 42150 Crawford Road, Antioch. Home Cheese making Thursday, June 16 - 7:00 p.m. Good cheese tastes even better when you make it yourself! Mark Lyons of Green Thumb At Your Service will cover the science behind cheese making, along with ingredients, equipment, and techniques for making soft, hard, Italian, and other kinds of cheeses. It is primarily intended for new cheese makers, but experienced cheese makers may learn something new as well. Discover 3D Printing Wednesday, June 22 - 6:30 p.m. Enjoy hands-on participation in this exciting new technology from 3D design to actual printing on the library’s new 3D printer. ADULT HAPPENINGS-Preserving Summer’s Bounty Thursday, July 14 7:00 p.m. Learn how to can and preserve summer’s fruits and vegetables for year-round enjoyment. Staff from Radical Root Farm, a family-owned and certified organic farm in Libertyville, will explain water bath and pressure canning techniques and share their recipes for sauces, pickled vegetables and jams. College of Lake County: Connect to Your Future Monday, August 8 - 7:00 p.m. Whether you’re a high school student planning your next step, an adult thinking about re-entering the workforce, or an individual interested in personal enrichment opportunities, there’s a start for everyone at CLC. Attend this information session to learn more about program offerings, online and hybrid courses, transfer opportunities, student support services, scholarships and financing college, and how you can get started today. Fall Vegetable Gardening Thursday, August 11 - 7:00 p.m. Vegetable gardening does not have to end when summer does! This lecture will review how to prepare your garden for the fall, and discuss what vegetables are ideal for planting and harvesting this season. Grow a bountiful crop of delicious, sweet, crunchy vegetables for good healthful eating throughout fall and even into winter. Adult Summer Reading Program: How Does it Work? • • • Read books, eBooks, listen to recorded books, or read aloud with your family. Count one title for every 4 hours that you read aloud with your young ones. To complete the program just read or listen to 6 books or 600 minutes. Once you have completed the program come into the library between June 25 - July 31 to spin for your final prize. What About Those Amazing Baskets? • • Earn basket tickets by completing trivia quizzes, activity sheets, online book reviews, attending programs, and for every title or every 100 minutes you read. New quizzes posted in the library every Monday. Basket drawing: Saturday August 6 at 2 p.m. on the library’s main floor. Please join us. Winners not present will be notified. Stop Motion Animation Informational Meeting Thursday, June 2 - 6:30 p.m. This is an optional meeting for those wanting more information about our summer stop motion project. We will go over some resources for creating your animations as well as some suggestions for work flow. Time will be allotted for questions and discussion. Paper Rollercoaster Saturday, June 18 - 10:00 a.m. Bring your team of friends or family for this all ages maker program! Using paper and masking tape, teams will work to construct marble roller coasters. We’ll provide supplies and instructions, you provide the labor and creativity! Prizes will be awarded for the longest timed run, tallest tower, most creative theme and more! Drop-In Engineering Thursdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. June 30 & July 14 Let’s play with physics! Participants of all ages are invited to build with us. In June we will harness the awesome power of kinetic energy while building a 1,000 stick long craft stick chain reaction. In July we will be going for height with rolled newspaper forts. MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SUMMER VACATION Traveling to a Foreign Country this Summer? Learn the local lingo with Mango Languages. Can’t Decide Which Books to Take Along? If your travel plans always include your favorite reading...save room in your suitcase by checking out one of the library’s Kindles. Each is loaded with over 100 titles so you’re sure to find something to read. To see which titles are on each Kindle, search for Kindle in the librarys online catalog. Each record includes a list of included titles. Antioch Public Library District 95th Year! 1921 - 2016 The library has a long rich history on Main Street in Antioch.
