the Natural Resource Conservancy
Commission is hosting its annual
Streamwood Environmental Education
Day (SEED). Come join us at the
Streamwood Police Department, where
representatives from various groups
will provide information on gardening, water quality,
native plantings, recycling, and energy conservation.
Also, you won’t want to miss an interactive presentation featuring live exotic animals from AnimalQuest!

the parking lot behind Village Hall. Prescription drugs are being collected in the vestibule of the Police Station.

Ash Tree Update
The Public Works Department is currently scheduled to remove most of the remaining ash trees affected by
Emerald Ash Borer damage. In addition, they will begin planting approximately 600 new trees of 50 various species, for a better overall tree diversity within the Village.

Elgin-O’Hare Expressway
Presentation
Representatives from the Illinois Department
of Transportation (IDOT) provided an
overview on a feasibility study for the proposed expansion of the Elgin O’Hare
Expressway. IDOT Planning Bureau Chief
Peter Harmet presented a variety of options
for future development that would realign
the current exit through Hanover Park. The
feasibility study examines only the potential
for improvements. IDOT representatives stated that the next steps would be to consider
design standards and financial feasibility.
Designs on proposed alternatives to the western leg of the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway were
presented at a recent Village Board meeting.

Poplar Creek Flood Risk Assessment Survey
The Illinois Department of Natural Resource, Office of Water Resources (IDNR/OWR), is
partnering with the Illinois State Water Survey to examine the flood risk throughout the
Poplar Creek Watershed.
From now, and continuing through spring, an appropriately identified IDNR/OWR survey
crew, will be in the area along Poplar Creek – acquiring first floor (front door sill) and lowest
entry (window well or crawl space vent) elevations to determine potential threats to your
home or business. This survey will require the survey crew to briefly come onto your property to collect necessary information – without disrupting your property. If you have any questions please feel

Irving Park Road Improvements
The Village Board voted to proceed with Phase 2
engineering on improvements to Irving Park
Road. The Village has been working with IDOT
to improve Irving Park Road, west of Bartlett
Road to Madison Drive in order to eliminate the
existing bottleneck. The improvements would
allow for four lanes on Irving Park Road
through to Route 59. Additional improvements
would include lighting, landscaping and fencing
where needed. Work is anticipated to begin on
these improvements in 2017.

Message From The Village President
Congratulations to the 5th grade students – 286 in all – from
Oakhill, Ridge Circle, Glenbrook, Sunnydale, and St. John’s
elementary schools, who graduated from the 17-week D.A.R.E. instruction program – ‘Keepin’ it REAL,' this past January. D.A.R.E. helps
children learn how to say ‘no’ to drugs, and more importantly, it gives
students the skills and strategies needed to make better life choices.

Development Commission, in partnership with members from our manufacturing community and School District U46, will host its 2nd annual
Streamwood Manufacturing Career
Exploration Camp! Based on a real-life
employment application process, fifteen
Streamwood High School students will be President Roth with Police Chief Gremo (center)
‘hired’ to examine today’s white collar and D.A.R.E. Officers Polaski (L) and Stastny (R)
manufacturing careers. Students will spend the week with a number of our industrial businesses,
learning to apply industrial instruction from the classroom to the real world. We appreciate the
support of this year’s area businesses who are generously giving their time and talent to the program: Aluminum Coil Anodizing, Elgin Community College, KSO Metalfab, Rydin
Decal, Trelleborg Industries, and Weiler Engineering. We would also like to thank our generous sponsors, Sam’s Club Community Grant Program and the Walmart Foundation.
January celebrated the graduation of 286 5th grade students from Oakhill, Ridge
Circle, Glenbrook, Sunnydale, and St. John’s elementary schools, from the D.A.R.E.
- ‘Keepin’ it REAL' program. We wish these student graduates much success and would
like to encourage them to continue learning to recognize and resist the many direct and
subtle pressures that may influence them in making decisions.
The Village is preparing for a number of upcoming community events we hope you and
your family will come out and enjoy. Streamwood’s off-duty police and fire personnel are
getting together for the annual Guns N Hoses charity basketball game Friday, April 8, at
Streamwood High School 7:00 pm.
On Saturday, April 23, 10:00 am-2:00 pm, our Natural Resource and Conservancy
Commission will hold its annual Streamwood Environmental Education Day (SEED) at
the Streamwood Police Department. This will be a great opportunity to learn about conserving
our natural resources and a chance to see an exotic animal presentation. The SEED event also
offers an opportunity to safely dispose of unused prescription drugs, electronic equipment and
paper for recycling, as there will be individuals available to take these items off your hands.
This year’s Art Appreciation Around the World exhibit, hosted by the Community
Relations Commission, will be held at the Poplar Creek Library on Saturday April 30,
from 1:00-4:00 pm. The Commission promotes “Art Appreciation: Ethnic, American and
Other Arts,” featuring displays of two- and three-dimensional art created by local artisans.
Believe it or not, the summer season is right around the corner – and with summer, comes
a number of community-wide celebrations. Mark your calendars as we look forward to
seeing you at our annual Memorial Day Ceremony on May 29, 4th of July fireworks
display at Dolphin Park, and, of course, please keep July 29 through July 31 open for
Summer Celebration – Picnic in the Park.
Finally, I’d like to bring to your attention a new life-saving program now being offered at
the Village’s blood drive events – Bone Marrow Screening. Beginning on Wednesday,
April 13, from 1:00-7:00 pm, the Streamwood Blood Commission and LifeSource
will offer free bone marrow screening for individuals ages 18-44. As a bone marrow registrant, your tissue type will be added to the National Marrow Donor Registry – Be The
Match Registry, for a potential patient match. If you were not considered a candidate
for blood donations in the past, you may now participate in blood drives by becoming a
bone marrow registrant. Please consider joining this life-saving program.

Will Team Hoses be ‘hosed’ again, after being
‘beat walked’ by Team Guns in their 2015 43-38
victory? Off-duty personnel from the Streamwood
Police and Fire Departments will battle each other
once again on the basketball court on Friday, April
8, 7:00 pm at Streamwood High School. Tickets are
$5 each (children 5 and under free), and can be
purchased at Village Hall, the police or fire stations,
or online at www.streamwoodgnh.org.
Festivities include raffles, door prizes, and more!
This annual event raises funds to benefit local charities and Streamwood families in need. Come out

The 2016 Branch pick-up program begins Monday, April 4 and runs once a month through October. The Village
is divided into four areas and each area is picked-up one Monday per month. Check the area map and schedule
below to find out which date of the month your area is scheduled for pick-up. Place branches, no greater than
six inches (6”) in diameter, although any length, on the parkway with the cut ends facing the street, by 6:00
am on the designated Monday for your area.
If you notice that your branches have not been picked up on the designated date, please be patient, as they will

Healthy Lawn, Healthy Environment
A beautiful and healthy lawn is good for our environment. It can resist damage from weeds, disease, and insect pests. Doing little things now, goes
a long way to having a healthy spring.
• Longer is better. Grass that is slightly long
makes a strong, healthy lawn. Weeds have a
hard time taking root when grass is around 2½
to 3½ inches.
• Water early. Water when footprint impressions stay in the lawn and do not spring back.
Water early in the morning for short periods so
the soil may absorb the water.
• Correct thatch buildup. Thatch is a layer of
dead plant materials between the grass blades
and the soil. When thatch is thick, water and
nutrients can’t get to the soil.
• Recycle grass. Don't pick up the grass clippings after you mow. Use a mulching lawn
mower that cuts the clippings finer and feed
them into the lawn.
• Let your lawn breathe. Once a year, remove
small plugs of earth to allow air and water to
aerate the grass roots.

Children 8 years and younger are invited to search for candy with the Easter Bunny
on March 19 at 11:00 am at Hoosier Grove Park. In case of inclement weather, children can visit with the Easter Bunny indoors. The event is free and open to the public.
Twilight Egg Hunt
Join us for the Twilight Egg Hunt at Shady Oaks Park on March 25 at 7:45
pm. Search for eggs through the twilight, as each egg contains candy with a

Streamwood Manufacturing Career Exploration Camp
March 11 is the deadline to
participate

the
5Essentials Survey, an
online survey administered
on behalf of the Illinois
State Board of Education. Developed by the University of Chicago, the 5Essentials
survey will measure U-46 School District performance and needs for improvement
within the areas of: Effective Leaders, Collaborative Teachers, Involved Families,
Supportive Environment, and Ambitious Instruction. This survey is a great opportunity for parents and community members to share their thoughts on these important

Young Hearts for Life® (YH4L)
On March 17, Streamwood High School, in conjunction with Advocate Sherman Hospital and
the Elizabeth Grace YH4L Memorial Fund, will offer students a free electrocardiogram (ECG) heart screening, under the YH4L Cardiac Screening Program. The YH4L
screening program helps identify high school students at risk for sudden cardiac death,
and to increase the public's awareness of this issue. To date over 130,000 students have
been screened as a result of YH4L. Students will need to provide parent authorization in

Bone marrow is a precious life-saving resource for someone diagnosed
with a blood cancer, such as leukemia. Beginning with the Village’s upcoming Blood Drive on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, from 1:00-7:00 pm, the
Streamwood Blood Commission and LifeSource will offer an additional service of bone marrow screening to its blood donation events.

Bone marrow screening is free to ages 18-44, and requires a simple, noninvasive, self-administered cheek swab using 4 long Q-tips. If you have
been unable to donate blood in the past, you can now participate by providing a bone marrow screening and being added to the bone marrow registry – Be The Match Registry, the National Marrow Donor Program.
When you join Be The Match Registry, your tissue type is added to the registry. It’s not a marrow donation; you don't actually donate until you are a
match for a patient.
According to LifeSource, “Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with
a blood cancer like leukemia. For many patients, a marrow transplant is
the only life-saving treatment—their only chance for a cure. And nearly
70 percent of patients do not have a match within their own family.”
