2009 Men’s Soccer
2009 SEASON OUTLOOK
The Georgia State men’s soccer team coming off its most successful
season in the CAA conference, finished the 2008 season with a 6-8-4
overall record and will look to improve even more with the help of five
starters returning from last year’s squad. The future looks bright for the
Panthers as Coach Kerem Daser has brought in ten newcomers to the
mix to provide depth and opportunities. “We have a young team, but
half of the players will be veterans and the other half will be one of the
top recruiting classes we have ever had,” commented Daser. “During
the spring we showed great promise with our two captains Joe Castaldo
and Donald Kirkland. Both are quiet leaders but make up for it with
their play on the field, “Daser added. With the loss of eight seniors,
including starting goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho, it gives plenty of opportunities for incoming freshman to compete for starting positions for
Georgia State.
Returners
The Panthers return eight players for the 2009 season after losing eight
players to graduation including three starting defenders and All-CAA
defender Joe DeVito. All three seniors played significant time last season and will look to provide leadership to the young Panther squad.
Senior Brett Cummins returns to the starting left midfielder position
along with Donald Kirkland and starting forward Stephan Minyono,
who was tied for the team lead in goals last season. Georgia State also
has two juniors returning who contributed significantly last season in
Joe Castaldo and Joey Syfert who will be sitting out in the fall due to
injury.
Newcomers
Georgia State has added ten freshmen to the mix for the 2009 season
that will look to compete for starting positions on the roster. This diverse group includes three international players and seven players from
the state of Georgia who will look to provide immediate impact on the
playing field. Vincent Foermer, a goalkeeper from Germany, is one of
the international players that have a chance to start right away. “Vincent is a great shot blocker that is one of the best young goalkeepers
from Germany and is a great asset to our team,” Coach Daser said. The
other two international players Victor Nkhoma (Zimbabwe) and Yasser
Majluf (Chile), will also have a shot to make their way into the starting
lineup. Coach Daser found some terrific players close to home in Georgia with midfielder Eric Lawrence from Columbus, Ga leading the way.
Lawrence has the skill to come in and start from the beginning after
putting up terrific high school numbers. Caleb Kernan, a forward from
Covington, Ga has good size at six-feet and amassed 78 career goals
during his high school career. The Panthers added defenders to help
provide depth at those positions in signing six-foot-three Peter Vania
from Kennesaw, Ga. Freshmen Juan Giraldo played terrific defense in
high school joining fellow freshmen high school teammate Alex Reyes
in Atlanta this fall. Rounding out the freshmen class are Two midfielders, Moosah Dowlatabadi from Alpharetta and Alex Vivanco from
Cumming who will both come in and compete for playing time.
Goalkeepers
Sophomore goalkeeper Zachary Walldorff had a break-out spring season and will be competing for the starting goalie position. Walldorff did
not see any action last year playing behind senior Filipe Carvalho, who
holds the all-time record for saves in a career and tied for the record
saves in a season. International player Vincent Foermer will also be
competing for the starting position as the spot is up for grabs for who
ever plays better in the preseason. Foermer brings leadership having
played in a very competitive high school league and traveling leagues.
Defenders
With only two players returning from last year’s starting defense there
will be plenty of chances for newcomers to providing valuable minutes
for the Panthers this season. Sophomore Christopher Peacos will come
in as the most experienced defender with junior Joey Syfert helping right
there beside him. Peacos finished the 2008 season with 15 games played
with Syfert playing 17 games. Both will come in as starters on the back
side of the field. The other two starting spots will be played out during the
preseason. Sophomore Jacob Hamilton, who played 15 games last year, is
another returning player looking for major minutes this season. Freshmen
Juan Giraldo, Moosah D., and Peter Vania both have great opportunities
to step up and start at defender heading into the 2009 season.
Midfielders
The midfield position has the most experience of all the positions with
three upperclassmen leading the way at the starting positions. Seniors
Brett Cummins and Donald Kirkland each come off of productive seasons
in 2008 and will be starters at the start for 2009. Junior Joe Castaldo, who
played 16 games last season, will also gain valuable playing time at midfield. Freshman Eric Lawrence and Victor Nkhoma have the best chance
to come right in and compete for a starting position immediately. The
other midfielders include freshman Alex Reyes, and Alex Vivanco. “Brett
Cummins, Donald Kirkland, and Joe Castaldo had terrific spring seasons
and we look for them to be leaders at the midfield position,” added Daser.
Forwards
With two experienced forwards leading the way, the Panthers look to take
advantage of their attacking abilities to lead to plenty of goal opportunities
in 2009. Senior Stephen Minyono leads the way coming off a six goal season to tie for the team lead. “Stephan has the potential to be an all conference player, we need him to take it to the next level as one of the top strikers in the conference this year,” commented Daser. Sophomore forward
Ayokunle Lumpkin will also be trying to earn the other starting forward
position coming off a solid season last year after playing every game for the
Panthers. Two freshmen come in with a chance to compete for that final
starting spot with Caleb Kernan and Yasser Majluf both having great skills
as young players.
The Schedule
The 18-game season schedule opens with two home exhibition match ups
against Georgia Southern and UAB in Panthersville before 16 regular season matches. Georgia State heads out on the road to open the season at
USC-Upstate and Prebyterian before coming home to play rival Mercer
in Panthersville on Friday, September 11. The final two non-conference
games end with two familiar foes in A-Sun opponent North Florida on the
road and Gardner Webb in Panthersville on September 20th.
The 2009 CAA schedule opens with a home match against Hofstra on Sept.
26, then a road game against Northeastern the following weekend in Boston, Mass. Two important home matches follow with UNC Wilmington
and Drexel coming to Panthersville in early October. Georgia State then
travels to Norfolk, Va. to take on Old Dominion in a tough road game on
Oct. 14. Three days later the Panthers take on James Madison at home and
then prepare for a two-game road swing near the end of October. Georgia State travels to VCU then to defending CAA tournament champions
George Mason.
The Panthers head home for their final home game of the season against
William & Mary to close out the home conference schedule. The final two
conference games will be played on the road against Towson on Nov. 1 and
Delaware on Nov. 3 to finish the 2009 season. The CAA championship will
begin on Friday November 13 through November 15 with the top four
seeds making the tournament.

HEAD COACH
KEREM DASER
Record: 63-89-9
USSSF “A” Licence
NSCAA National & NSCAA
Advance National Diplomas
Served on the NCAA South
Regional Ranking Committee
in 2004, 2005
Kerem Daser enters his tenth season as the
Georgia State Panthers head coach and 13th
year on the Georgia State soccer staff. In his
eight-year tenure as head coach at Georgia State, Daser has coached
coached four teams ranked in the top 10 in the South Region and one
in the North Atlantic Region, and has won a conference regular season
championship and also has won a conference tournament championship. During his total 12 years as a Panther, Daser has been with teams
that have claimed three wins over Top 25 ranked squads. He has built
a strong alumni support group to help the future growth of soccer at
Georgia State.
In 2005, the squad fell one victory short of qualifying for post season
play in their first year in the Colonial Athletic Association. Only six
schools qualify for the CAA Soccer Championships. The team placed
eighth in the league with a 4-7 conference record and 6-12 overall.
State needed to win its last three games, all at home, but dropped the
middle game 1-0 to Delaware.
In the 2008 season, the team had its most successful season in the
colonial conference. The team finished 6-8-4 and had 4-2-2 home record.
The Atlantic Sun Conference 6-3 record in 2004 was the best since the
2000 mark of 6-2 and marked a fifth consecutive winning record in
conference play. The team has been ranked in the top 10 in the South
region four out of the last six years. Daser also guided the Panthers
to a conference title in 2000 by winning the Trans America Athletic
Conference Tournament, their first title since 1997. Daser produced
consecutive winning seasons along with the 2003 year for the first
time since 1987-88.
In 2000, Daser led the Panthers to a 12-9 overall record and a 6-2
record in the TAAC (now the Atlantic Sun). The team posted two
shutouts during the TAAC Tournament and lost in a heartbreaking
NCAA Play-In Tournament Match against Rhode Island, falling 4-3
in overtime. Coach Daser was named 2000 TAAC Coach of the Year.
In 2001, he led the team to a 9-7 overall record and a 4-3 mark in the
A-Sun after the Panthers upset No. 6 Clemson in a match at the beginning of the season that earned Georgia State its first national ranking
ever. This ranking rose to as high as No. 15 in the Soccer America poll.
In 2002, Daser led the team to its third straight winning conference
record. Daser was also instrumental in the Panthers’ last championship, working as an assistant coach on the 1997 TAAC championship
team.
Prior to coming to Georgia State, Daser worked as an assistant coach
at the University of North Carolina (1996-97) and for a year at Meth-
odist College in Fayetteville, N.C. (1995-96). At UNC, he worked with
current Major League Soccer players Carey Talley (Kansas City Wizards),
Eddie Robinson (San Jose Earthquakes), who is now on the U.S. National
Team, and former MLS players Tim Schaydak and Temoc Suarez, as well
as seven players who participated on United States national youth teams.
At Methodist, he helped the Monarchs to a 17-0 regular season mark and a
21-1 record following the NCAA tournament. Three players at Methodist
were named All-America and six signed professional contracts.
Daser has also been very active in the development of youth soccer in the
South. He served as Director of Coaching and Player Development for
the Eagles YMCA Soccer Club in Alpharetta, Ga. (1999-2002) and was
the technical director for the Forsyth Fusion Soccer Club (2002-2009).
Currently the boys academy director for the GFC Soccer Club. In the
summer of 2006, the Forsyth Fusion U18 team qualified for regional play
and the Forsyth Fusion U14 team was a Georgia Cup finalist. The Forsyth
Fusion Youth Under17 team won the Georgia State Youth Championship
and qualified for regionals during the 2005 summer. In the spring of
2004, the Fusion club had two teams advance to the state semifinals and
one team went on to the final. The U-16 Fusion team won the prestigious
Long Island Showcase in summer of 2003. With the Eagles, the club won
five state championships, two regional titles, a Tampa Sun Bowl Crown,
and qualified twice for the USYSA national finals. Jack Mcinnery, Domenic Bonilla, and Kyle Helton went on to make the USA National Youth
teams. Mcinnery is currently the leader scorer for the U.S. National youth
team and will be competing in the World Cup. Kyle Helton is currently
playing professional in the A-League for the Austin Aztec. In the spring
of 2002, the Brazilian Futbol Federation invited Daser to conduct a technical report for the U-17 International Mini World Cup. Daser has gone
on to coach symposiums in Italy in 2000 (AC Milan, Inter Milan, Torino)
and Brazil in 2001 (Vasco Da Gama, Flamingo, Fluimense).
In 1999, Daser was named to the Region III coaching staff and has
worked as an assistant coach with the ‘83, ‘84, and ‘85 teams. In April
2000, he was the assistant coach of the ‘84 regional team that competed
in an international youth tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico. After
the Mexico trip, goalkeeper Ford Williams became a member of the
U.S. National youth ‘84 team. In April 2001, Daser coached the Georgia
‘85/’86 ODP team in an international festival in Paris, France. He led the
Georgia ‘85 team to the regional semifinals in May 2002, as three players
were named to the regional team. Daser worked with many regional players who went on to the MLS including Ricardo Clark who plays for the
Houston Dynamo. Clark is a starter for the U.S. National team.
In the summer of 2002, he worked on the regional coaching staff with
the ‘87 age group. In June 2002, he coached the Georgia amateur team
in Dallas at the South Regional final where the squad was undefeated
and had two players selected for the U.S. Amateur National team. In the
summer of 2003, he coached the Georgia State Amateur Select team at regionals that had a record six players named to the regional team and four
were named to the national pool. Summer 2004, he coached the Georgia
Amateur team at the Regional competition in Alabama. The team beat
Florida and North Texas but lost in the Regional Final to South Texas, 32. In the spring of 2008 he was named South Regional Amateur Coach.
Five players from the Georgia team were invited to the U.S. National
Georgia State University
Amateur Camp and four players made the U.S. National Team, including former Georgia State Panther, Terrance Johnson. From 1992-97, he
served as North Carolina ODP coach, traveling with the team to Paris,
with the ‘79 (N.C.) ODP squad. Several of Daser’s ODP players have
gone on to play professionally, including Caleb Norkus who plays for the
United Soccer Leagues (USL) First Division Carolina Railhawks. Norkus
was a member of the N.C. ODP U-15 team that Daser coached in 1996.
He went on to start for the U.S. U-17 World Cup squad. Josh Villalobos,
another Daser protégé, played for the U-17 U.S. National team and was
on the N.C. ODP ‘83 squad. Daser coached Philip Long and Ryan Solle

2008 SEASON REVIEW
The 2008 Georgia State men’s soccer season was a year of improvement and ended by winning two conference games to end the season on a high note. Georgia State improved from the previous year,
finishing the season 6-8-4, with a number of exciting matches. Also
Georgia State finished its non-conference schedule with a solid 4-2-1
record thanks to some solid play by some newcomers and seniors on
the team.
Eight seniors led the Panthers in 2008- Linus Warendh, Filpe Carvalho, Joe DeVito, Dathan Knott, Tobias Nagy, Spenser Sumpter, Francesco Barbera, and Eduardo Liza.
The Panthers opened the season with a Monday evening affair against
the Clemson Tigers in Clemson, S.C. Georgia State ended the first
half with a solid 2-0 lead against Clemson. Seniors Dathan Knott and
Linus Warendh each added a goal in the first half to give the Panthers
the advantage. Clemson began its rally in the second half scoring three
goals in the final 11:48, including the game winner with 4:13 left on
the clock to claim the victory and drop Georgia State to 0-1 on the
season.
Georgia State had its home opener in Panthersville with a 3-0 victory
over Presbyterian, thanks to goals from newcomer Stephan Minyono,
Ayokunle Lumpkin and senior Dathan Knott. Senior goal keeper Filipe Carvalho earned his first shutout of the season with four saves
to preserve the victory for the Panthers. Two days later the Panthers
won their second straight game at home upending USC Upstate for a
2-1 victory at Panthersville. Senior Linus Warendh added a goal and
Stephan Minyono added his second goal of the season to give the Panthers their second win of the season.
Georgia State was riding high after two straight wins at home heading to
the Mercer University Tournament but came up short against Alabama
A&M losing 4-1 in the first game of the tournament. In game two, the
Panthers bounced back with a solid 2-1 victory over the host Mercer
Bears, earning
a second-place
finish in the
tournament.
Defender
Francesco
Barbera,
midfielder
Joe Casstaldo,
and
Filipe
Carvalho
were named
to the AllTour nament
team for the
weekend.
Georgia State
traveled
to
its
second
tournament
of the season,
participating in the Wofford Soccer Classic facing the Furman
Paladins in game one. The Panthers battled to a 2-2 tie thanks to goals
from Stephan Minyono and Donald Kirkland in improving their
record to 3-2-1 in the non-conference. Georgia State finished its nonconference with a solid 2-0 victory over host Wofford to improve to 4-
2-1 on the year. Three Panthers were named to
the All-Tournament squad, including seniors
Joey DeVito, Spenser Sumpter, and junior
Stephan Minyono.
The Panthers opened up their conference
schedule with back-to-back ties against
Hofstra on the road and Northeastern at
home. Both games ended in 2-2 ties, earning
Georgia State a record of 4-2-3 heading into a
tough conference stretch.
Georgia State went on the road for its next two conference games with
the first one being at Wilmington to take on the Seahawks. The Panthers
battled but fell in the end, losing 3-2 in a hard fought game, dropping
their first conference game of the season. Three days later, the Panthers
suffered another heart breaking loss after battling the Drexel Dragons
in overtime, coming up just short as Drexel scored with two seconds
left to win 2-1 and give Georgia State its second straight defeat.
The Panthers followed those games with a tough 1-0 loss against Old
Dominion and suffered their first loss at home in the 2008 season.
Georgia State then traveled to Harrisonburg, Va to take on James
Madison, who defeated the Panthers 2-0 after Georgia State just
couldn’t convert on multiple scoring opportunities.
Georgia State began a two-game home stand with a 1-1 tie against VCU
after playing two overtimes to settle the game, earning the Panthers
their fourth tie of the season. Three days later Georgia State dropped
a tough game to the eventual CAA champions, the George Mason
Patriots, 2-0, in Panthersville.
After their worst lost of the season, a 4-0 defeat on the road against
William & Mary, the Panthers found inner toughness by ending the
season with two straight home games.
Georgia State honored
its seniors ending their
careers with two shut
out victories to end the
season with a two game
winning streak enjoying
their most competitive
CAA conference season
since joining the league
in 2005. The Panthers
defeated Towson 2-0 as
it was fitting both goals
were scored by seniors
Eduardo Liza and Joe
DeVito. In the season
finale
the
Panthers
dominated from the
start ending the season
on a high note defeating
Delaware 5-0 in a rout
to finish the season 6-8-4
overall and 2-6-3 in the conference. Georgia State continues to show
promise in the CAA conference earning a 2-2-2 home record during
the 2008 season.

2009 ALUMNI GAME
Georgia State men’s
soccer team hosted its
3rd Annual Alumni Day
on Saturday, April 05,
2009 at Panthersville
Athletic Complex. The
annual alumni event
offers an opportunity
for former players to
reconnect and also meet current student-athletes. Stories
were shared, memories rekindled, and lots of catching up
with old teammates, friends and family took place.
The alumni events began at 3 p.m. and included two mini
soccer games with about 50 alumni participating. The
alumni were treated to lunch after the scrimmages and
many stayed for the Mercer game. Following the Alumni
game the 2009 spring scrimmages took place as Georgia
State battled Mercer to a 1-1 tie.
22
“We had an amazing day of soccer at our alumni soccer event.
We had about 50 soccer alumni come out to our annual April
event,” commented head coach Kerem Daser. “ It was great
seeing all of the alumni at our soccer stadium. We had four
equal teams play against each other. It was so much fun
hearing stories from the past and seeing old friends.”

Colonial Athletic
Association
The Colonial Athletic Association celebrates its 25th
Anniversary in 2009-10 with memories of a proud
and storied past and visions of an exciting future.
Regarded as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences, the CAA encompasses five of the nation’s
nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic
footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta.
The conference has produced 16 national team
champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12
national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award
winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors
accumulated away from competition, which include
five Rhodes Scholars and 20 NCAA post-graduate
scholars. In 2008-09, the CAA had more than 1,700
of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the
Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average
while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference ranked in the top 10 in the nation in 12 of its 23 sports in the latest APR report released by the NCAA.
The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast,
and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media marMember Institutions kets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7),
Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore
(25).The number of television homes in the CAA
Delaware
market exceeds 20 million.
Drexel
The CAA currently sponsors 23 sports with the
George Mason
addition of a 12-team football league in 2007 and
Georgia State
women’s rowing in 2009. Male athletes compete

VCU
track & field and volleyball. In 2008-09, 28 teams
William & Mary
earned NCAA Tournament berths and 45 student-athletes received All-America honors.
The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined
to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981.
Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s
Lacrosse Championship. Three women’s soccer teams have reached the second
round of the NCAA Tournament for the past two seasons and at least one
men’s soccer team has advanced to the final 16 of the NCAA Championship
in five of the last seven years. In men’s cross country, William & Mary placed
16th nationally as a team in 2008 and Georgia State’s Mark Steeds earned AllAmerica status after a 12th-place individual effort. On the mat, ODU’s Ryan
Williams was one of three wrestling All-Americans after finishing as the national
runner-up at 141 pounds. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA
Baseball Championship in nine of the last 12 years and has had 12 or more
players selected in the last seven Major League Baseball drafts. The conference
also boasts numerous All-Americans in tennis, golf, track and field and swimming
and diving.
CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The
Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with
a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of
intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs already established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and

granting visiting academic status to student-athletes
traveling to an away contest so that they have access
to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs.
In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions
were awarded academia’s most coveted distinction
– the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor
in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for
chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason University, shared the
Nobel Prize in economic sciences.
Commissioner Thomas E.Yeager has guided the CAA
since its inception. The conference traces its roots
back to 1983 when three of its current membersGeorge Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States
Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC
South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two
new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American
University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to
CAA took place on June 6, 1985.
Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary
were joined by Old Dominion University in
1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001.
Georgia State University and Northeastern
University became members of the conference
on July 1, 2005.
Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, the CAA
takes great pride in producing student-athletes
who stand out on the playing field and in the
classroom.
Commissioner Thomas E.Yeager
CAA Men’s Soccer
Conference History in the NCAA- This was
the 12th time in the past 14 years that the
CAA placed at least two teams in the NCAA
Men’s Soccer Championship field. Both
George Mason and William & Mary in 2009
won first-round matches, but the CAA failed
to put a team into the third round for just the
second time in the past seven seasons.
