2008 MEN’S SOCCER
2008 SEASON OUTLOOK
The Georgia State men’s soccer team will look to rebound
off its 4-11 2007 season with the help of 11 returners
and the addition of seven new players to add depth to its
roster. According to head coach Kerem Daser, the key to
improvement and success this season rests in the hands
of the team, rather than one key player. With the loss
of State’s leading scorer, Floreal Pedrazo, the Panthers
have worked on defending, transitioning, attacking,
finishing, and making a presence on the field during the
offseason. “We are looking to have a successful season
with great leadership on the field,” said Daser. “In order
to be winners, you have to have three things: the head,
the heart, and the feet. The head is the soccer mind, the
heart is the willingness to play and be competitive, and
the feet include all the technical skills in soccer. If we
can have all three of those things, we will have a good
season.”
Returners
The Panthers return 11 players for the 2008 season, losing
only five players, including leading scorer, Floreal Pedrazo
and starter, Justin Davis. Of the 11 returners, eight are
seniors and all saw significant action last season for the
Panthers. “Our most successful seasons at Georgia State
were in 1997, 2000, and 2004, and in all three of those
years, our team was dominated by seniors. So, I think our
large group of seniors will have a positive impact. They
are all special and bring something different to the field
and we will look for them to be leaders and set examples
for our newcomers on and off the field,” said Daser.
Newcomers
State has added a recruiting class of seven enthusiastic
and talented players. The combination of raw and diverse
talent allows for competition at every position. Many of
the newcomers will bring an impact off the bench while
some will battle for starting positions. Stephan Minyono
is a six-foot-five transfer forward from the University of
Evansville and also has experience at the ODP level as a
member of the south regional team. Christopher Peacos,
a freshman defender from Roswell, Ga., was one of the
top defenders in the country out of last year’s class and
played for the Concorde Soccer Club, which is a part of
the US Developmental Academy and has won many state
and regional cups. He has matched up against some of
the top players in the country and brings a great deal of
experience to the team. Jacob Hamilton, a freshman from
Cumming, Ga. and former member of the RPL Norcross
Fury team, will see action at the forward position.
Zachary Walldorf is a freshman from Chamblee High
School in Chamblee, Ga., and will back Filipe Carvalho at
the goalkeeper position. Ayokunle Lumpkin, a freshman
from Marietta, Ga., will assist the forward, helping to set
up and score goals. Donald Kirkland (McDonough, Ga.)
and Joey Syfert (Kennesaw, Ga.) will add depth to the
team, splitting time between the defender and midfield
positions.
Goal Keepers
Goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho returns as a starter at the
goalkeeper position with 317 career saves. Carvalho,
who finished the 2007 season ranked No. 6 in the NCAA
in saves, is expected to have a stellar season in his final
year as a Panther. As co-captain, he will be a leader on
the field and serve as a mentor for newcomer Zachary
Walldorf.
Defenders
State will return five experienced defenders, including
seniors Spenser Sumpter, Francesco Barbera, and Tobias
Nagy. Sumpter, a three-year starter, will continue to lead
the backfield as a defender with his great soccer mind
and first touch on the ball. Sophomore Michael Clarke
also returns and is expected to add great athleticism
at the central position. Peacos, Hamilton, Nagy, and
Barbera will also complement the position, adding talent,
size, and presence.
Midfielders
Four players return at the midfield position, including
seniors Linus Warendh, Joe DeVito, and Eduardo Liza.
DeVito had an outstanding 2007 season, but struggled
with injuries during the second half of the season. He
played for the Atlanta Silverbacks PDL team during
the summer and improved his ball handling techniques
to complement his breakaway speed.
Liza moves
from center midfield to side midfield where he is more
comfortable and more efficient. He is crafty with the ball
and unpredictable and will be needed to set up and score
goals this season. Linus and Kirkland will add an impact
on the attacking side while newcomer Lumpkin will add a
spark off the bench.
Forwards
Leading the helm at the defending position is senior
Dathan Knott with help from Nagy and Minyono. Daser
will look to Knott to fill in as a scorer. He has dealt with
injuries over his career, but has had a great spring season
and returns fully healthy. Nagy scored two goals last
season and will be another option as a scorer off the
bench. Freshman Kunle Lumpkin has the ability to score
big goals and will be a great complement to play beside
Dathan Knott.
The Schedule
The 18-game regular-season schedule opens on the road
with a rematch of last year’s exhibition game against
Clemson where the Panthers held off the Tigers for a 1-0
victory. The Panthers then return home for a two-match
home stand against Presbyterian on Sept. 6 and USC
Upstate on Sept. 8.
The Panthers will hit the road for a five-game road trip,
participating in two tournaments at Mercer and Wofford,
facing Alabama A&M on Sept. 13 and rounding out
competition at the Mercer Tournament with a match against
Mercer on Sept. 14. State then travels to Spartanburg,
S.C. to take on Furman and Wofford Sept. 19 and 21 in
the Wofford Tournament. The five-game road trip ends
with a CAA opener against Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y.
on Sept. 27.
State will take on its CAA foe, Northeastern at home on
Oct. 4 before getting back on the road for two straight
CAA matches against UNCW and Drexel. The Panthers will
host the 2007 CAA Champions, ODU, on Oct. 15 before
traveling to face James Madison on Oct. 18. State returns
home for a pair of conference matches against VCU and
George Mason on Oct. 22 and 25 and travels for its final
road match against William & Mary.
The Panthers return home to play their final two games of
the regular season against Towson and Delaware on Nov.
1 and 7, before preparing for the CAA Tournament, which
will be held Nov. 11-6 in Virginia Beach, Va.

DASER
Record: 57-81-5
College: Wake Forest, 1995
USSSF “A” Licence
NSCAA National & NSCAA

Served on the NCAA South
Regional Ranking Committee
in 2004, 2005
Kerem Daser enters his ninth
season as the Georgia State
Panthers head coach and 12th year
on the Georgia State soccer staff.
In his eight-year tenure as head coach at Georgia State,
Daser has coached coached four teams ranked in the
top 10 in the South Region and one in the North Atlantic
Region, and has won a conference champion. During his
total 12 years as a Panther, Daser has been with teams
that have claimed three wins over Top 25 ranked squads.
He has built a strong alumni support group to help the
future growth of soccer at Georgia State.
In 2005, the squad fell one victory short of qualifying
for post season play in their first year in the Colonial
Athletic Association. Only six schools qualify for the CAA
Soccer Championships. The team placed eighth in the
league with a 4-7 conference record and 6-12 overall.
State needed to win its last three games, all at home, but
dropped the middle game 1-0 to Delaware.
The Atlantic Sun Conference 6-3 record in 2004 was
the best since the 2000 mark of 6-2 and marked a fifth
consecutive winning record in conference play. The team
has been ranked in the top 10 in the South region four
out of the last six years. Daser also guided the Panthers
to a conference title in 2000 by winning the Trans America
Athletic Conference Tournament, their first title since
1997. Daser produced consecutive winning seasons along
with the 2003 year for the first time since 1987-88.
In 2000, Daser led the Panthers to a 12-9 overall record
and a 6-2 record in the TAAC (now the Atlantic Sun). The
team posted two shutouts during the TAAC Tournament
and lost in a heartbreaking NCAA Play-In Tournament
Match against Rhode Island, falling 4-3 in overtime. Coach
Daser was named 2000 TAAC Coach of the Year. In 2001,
he led the team to a 9-7 overall record and a 4-3 mark
in the A-Sun after the Panthers upset No. 6 Clemson in a
match at the beginning of the season that earned Georgia
State its first national ranking ever. This ranking rose to
as high as No. 15 in the Soccer America poll. In 2002,
Daser led the team to its third straight winning conference
record. Daser was also instrumental in the Panthers’ last
championship, working as an assistant coach on the 1997
TAAC championship team.
Prior to coming to Georgia State, Daser worked as an
assistant coach at the University of North Carolina (199697) and for a year at Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C.
(1995-96). At UNC, he worked with current Major League
Soccer players Carey Talley (Kansas City Wizards), Eddie
Robinson (San Jose Earthquakes), who is now on the U.S.
National Team, and former MLS players Tim Schaydak and
Temoc Suarez, as well as seven players who participated
on United States national youth teams. At Methodist, he
helped the Monarchs to a 17-0 regular season mark and
a 21-1 record following the NCAA tournament. Three
players at Methodist were named All-America and six
signed professional contracts.
Daser has also been very active in the development
of youth soccer in the South. He served as Director of
Coaching and Player Development for the Eagles YMCA
Soccer Club in Alpharetta, Ga. (1999-2002) and is
currently the Executive Director for the Forsyth Fusion
Soccer Club. In the summer of 2006, the Forsyth Fusion
U18 team qualified for regional play and the Forsyth
Fusion U14 team was a Georgia Cup finalist. The Forsyth
Fusion Youth Under17 team won the Georgia State Youth
Championship and qualified for regionals during the 2005
summer. In the spring of 2004, the Fusion club had two
teams advance to the state semifinals and one team went
on to the final. The U-16 Fusion team won the prestigious
Long Island Showcase in summer of 2003. With the
Eagles, the club won five state championships, two
regional titles, a Tampa Sun Bowl Crown, and qualified
twice for the USYSA national finals. In the spring of 2002,
the Brazilian Futbol Federation invited Daser to conduct
a technical report for the U-17 International Mini World
Cup. Daser has gone on to coach symposiums in Italy in
2000 (AC Milan, Inter Milan, Torino) and Brazil in 2001
(Vasco Da Gama, Flamingo, Fluimense).
In 1999, Daser was named to the Region III coaching
staff and has worked as an assistant coach with the ‘83,
‘84, and ‘85 teams. In April 2000, he was the assistant
coach of the ‘84 regional team that competed in an
international youth tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico.
After the Mexico trip, goalkeeper Ford Williams became
a member of the U.S. National youth ‘84 team. In April
2001, Daser coached the Georgia ‘85/’86 ODP team in an
international festival in Paris, France. He led the Georgia
‘85 team to the regional semifinals in May 2002, as three
players were named to the regional team.
In the summer of 2002, he worked on the regional
coaching staff with the ‘87 age group. In June 2002, he
coached the Georgia amateur team in Dallas at the South
Regional final where the squad was undefeated and had
two players selected for the U.S. Amateur National team.
In the summer of 2003, he coached the Georgia State
Amateur Select team at regionals that had a record
six players named to the regional team and four were
named to the national pool. Summer 2004, he coached
the Georgia Amateur team at the Regional competition in
Alabama. The team beat Florida and North Texas but lost
in the Regional Final to South Texas, 3-2. In the spring of
2008 he was named South Regional Amateur Coach.
Five players from the Georgia team were invited to the
U.S. National Amateur Camp and four players made
the U.S. National Team, including former Georgia State
GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY
Panther, Terrance Johnson. From 1992-97, he served as
North Carolina ODP coach, traveling with the team to
Paris, with the ‘79 (N.C.) ODP squad. Several of Daser’s
ODP players have gone on to play professionally, including
Caleb Norkus who plays for the United Soccer Leagues
(USL) First Division Carolina Railhawks. Norkus was a
member of the N.C. ODP U-15 team that Daser coached
in 1996. He went on to start for the U.S. U-17 World Cup
squad. Josh Villalobos, another Daser protégé, played
for the U-17 U.S. National team and was on the N.C.
ODP ‘83 squad. Daser coached Philip Long and Ryan Solle
on the N.C. ODP ‘83 team. Both players were drafted by
Major League Soccer (MLS) and Solle currently plays for
the Carolina Railhawks (A League). Daser also worked
with Blake Camp who plays for the Atlanta Silverbacks
(A League).
Daser coached Warren Ukah, Zack Kirby, Jonathan
Leathers, and Tomac Charowski from the Georgia ODP ‘85
team. Ukah plays professionally for the USL First Division
Atlanta Silverbacks, Kirby, who was drafted into the MLS,
plays for the Atlanta Silverbacks, and Charowski went on
to play for the U-20 Canadian National team. Jonathan
Leathers played on the US National U-23 team and plays
for the Kansas City Wizards in the MLS.
Coach Daser has also coached Georgia State University
players who have gone on to play professionallyWalter Valesky (Wilmington Hammerheads), Scott Mora
(Greenville Lions), Chris Mahaffey (Atlanta Silverbacks),
and Armin Marquez (Aragua FC- Venezuelan First
Division).
In his 15 year ODP experience with North Carolina
and Georgia ODP (1992-2008), he won two regional
championships with the 1997 ‘83 NC ODP and the 2000
‘85 ODP team. November 2004 he worked as an assistant
with the Georgia ‘89 ODP team that beat the U-16 Mexican
National Team. In December of 2007, he was a guest
assistant coach with the Turkish National Youth Team that
competed against Brazil, USA, and Russia.
In 2006, Daser worked with the Georgia ODP ‘90 team
that was undefeated in Mississippi. Six players were
selected to the regional team.
Eddy Gonzalez and
Taylor White were invited to the US Soccer Residency
Program. Gonzalez and Doudou Toure are now playing
professionally in Mexico. He holds his USSF “A” license
and has his NSCAA National and NSCAA Advance National
Diplomas.
During the summer of 2008, Daser worked with the
Georgia ODP 95 team where seven players from the
Georgia team were invited to the U-14 U.S. National
Camp.
Prior to coaching, Daser played at Greensboro College and
then went on to graduate from Wake Forest University
with a B.S. in psychology (1995). He was also a member
of the North Carolina state championship Raleigh United
club in 1997 and played for the IFC Greensboro Dynamos
that won the national indoor (ISISL) championship
in 1992 and were a USASA national finalist. He was
captain of the Greensboro Dynamo U23 team that was
coached by former Los Angeles Galaxy General Manager
Doug Hamilton and played alongside U.S. national team
member Eddie Pope.
Daser continues to play on amateur teams in the Atlanta
area. In 2000, he played for the Melchester amateur
team that won the Georgia state championship. In 2001
he played for the Atlanta Silverbacks amateur team that
won the 2001 Georgia state championship. He also played
on the Over-30 Atlanta Silverbacks soccer team in 2003.
From 2004 to 2006, he played with the Atlanta Silverbacks
amateur team and in 2007 was with the Majestic Fusion
ADASL Division I Team. Daser also volunteers his time
with the Special Olympics and Soccer in the Streets youth
program.

BRETT SURRENCY
4TH YEAR
Brett Surrency begins
his fourth year in the
Georgia State men’s
soccer program. He was
promoted to assistant
coach after serving as
a graduate assistant
in 2005 and will assist
Daser in all facets of the
program. He played his collegiate career at
Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Fla.
At JU, Surrency was a four-year starter at
defender. As a true freshman, he started
every game at sweeper. In his sophomore
season, he became team captain and scored
three goals including a game winner. As a
junior, he scored two goals and helped the
Dolphins defense lead the conference with a
1.08 GAA, the lowest in school history. He was
also second-team All-Atlantic Sun Conference.
During his senior year, he earned First Team
A-Sun All-Conference honors.
He earned
Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference honors
every year of eligibility.
“Brett was an outstanding player at Jacksonville
University,” commented Daser. He has done

GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY
2007 SEASON REVIEW
The 2007 Georgia State men’s soccer season, despite
its ups and downs, was a year of several bright spots.
The team played a highly competitive conference
schedule with four teams ranked in the top 10 in the
final regular-season NSCAA South Atlantic regional
rankings. Georgia State improved upon last year’s 116 mark, finishing the season 4-11-1, with a number of
exciting matches. However, mid-season injuries to top
scorers and a number of close defeats cost the team
dearly.
Five seniors led the Panthers in 2007- Justin Davis,
Iain MacGowan, Javon Carrington, Tim Lonergan, and
Floreal Pedrazo.
The Panthers’ 1-0-1 exhibition performance created
excitement for the season. After battling a disciplined
College of Charleston team to a 1-1 tie, Georgia State
proved that its players could compete with top teams.
State put its talent to the test against then-ranked No.
12 Clemson in its second exhibition match in front of
more than 500 fans at Panthersville Athletic Complex.
The Panthers battled the Tigers to a 1-0 shutout upset
victory, proving its discipline, athleticism, and potential
that head coach Kerem Daser believed in.
Georgia State opened the regular season battling North
Florida at home and nearly upset the Ospreys after
outplaying them throughout the match. State took a 10 lead in the 13th minute, but North Florida responded
with two straight goals before the end of the first half.
The Panthers’ defense prevented the Ospreys from
extending the lead, but State couldn’t find a way to
score as North Florida escaped with a 2-1 win.
Georgia State grabbed its first win in a 4-3 victory over
Lipscomb on the road. Floreal Pedrazo led the attack
with three different Panthers, including Brian Forero and
Tobias Nagy, scoring to help the Panthers to a 4-1 first
period lead and the eventual win.
The Panthers put their 1-1-0 record to the test as
they travelled to Boca Raton, Fla. to compete in the
Florida Atlantic Tournament. In the first match of the
tournament, Floreal Pedrazo scored two goals to give
the Panthers a late 2-1 lead against Florida Gulf Coast,
but the team couldn’t hold on as they allowed three
unanswered points to push them into a 3-2 overtime
loss. Georgia State would drop its second straight
match against a tough Florida Atlantic squad, struggling
offensively and only managing two shots on goal, in the
2-0 loss.
Despite the outcome, two Panthers, Floreal Pedrazo
and junior midfielder Joe Devito, were named to the
FAU Classic All-Tournament team for their individual
contributions and performance over the weekend.
After disappointing results at the FAU Tournament, the
Panthers embarked on a successful midseason stretch.
Demonstrating their will to beat stiff competition, the
Although State dropped its season opener, the team
quickly regrouped and was able to match Wofford in
a 0-0 overtime tie, recording 11 shots on the day, but
having difficulty closing on scoring opportunities.

2007 SEASON REVIEW
Panthers’ found their offensive rhythm, shutting out
Jacksonville in a 3-0 victory. Pedrazo scored two goals
in the contest and Joe Devito tallied his first goal of the
year to help seal the victory.
Two days later, a three-man contingent of Panthers,
including junior defender Tobias Nagy, junior midfielder
Eduardo Liza and midfielder Floreal Pedrazo, pushed
Georgia State past USC-Upstate, 3-1, spoiling the
Spartans’ home opener and improving the Panthers’
record to 3-3-1 entering CAA competition.
Floreal Pedrazo earned CAA Player of the Week honors
for leading the CAA in points and goals with 17 and
seven, respectively. Pedrazo also ranked second in the
nation in goals and points per game at the mark. Filipe
Carvalho led the CAA in saves with 36 and saves per
game with six and was also sixth in the nation in total
saves.
However, the Panthers were unable to extend the
winning streak to three as it opened conference play
against Towson, the 2007 CAA tournament runner-up,
on October 5 at the Towson Soccer Complex where the
Tigers had not lost a match since 2005.
The Tigers
found holes in the Panthers’ defense and shut out the
Panthers 6-0, scoring four goals in the second period
alone.
Two days later, State turned it around and bested George
Mason 3-0 in a match where Floreal Pedrazo and Joe
Devito connected for all of the Panthers points, to move
to an even 4-4-1 record.
However, the George Mason victory would be bittersweet
as injuries begin to cost the team as they closed out the
season.
The team’s overall performance led to a No. 10 ranking
in the NSCAA/Adidas South Atlantic Regional poll in
October, which helped to boost the momentum leading
into an 11-match CAA slate.

2008 ALUMNI GAME
Georgia
State
men’s
soccer team hosted its
2nd Annual Alumni Day
on Saturday, April 19,
2008
at
Panthersville
Athletic Complex.
The
annual alumni event offers
an opportunity for former
players to reconnect and
also meet current studentathletes.
Stories were
shared, memories rekindled,
and lots of catching up with
old teammates, friends and
family took place. However,
the highlights of the event
took
place on the field where athletes
from 1994-2006
competed
against
eachother
before the Legends (1968-1993) kicked off a scrimmage
that has proven to be one to be remembered.
The morning rain gave way to a beautiful sunny day
for alumni games as festivities kicked off at 4:30 p.m.
Roughly 50 soccer alumni registered for the event and
participated in two separate games. The athletes from
1994-2006, separated into two teams (A-L and M-Z) took the
field first, playing to a 2-2 tie.
The Legends , composed of former athletes from 1968-1993
took the field at 5:30 p.m. and played a competitive half of
soccer. Though no official score was taken, as head coach
Kerem Daser described, “the Legends definitely kicked it up
many levels. They are a great group of guys that love the
Georgia State blue and white. ”
The afternoon featured live music, barbeque, and fellowship
among fellow Georgia State soccer alumni, family, and
friends.
“Alumni Day was very successful and it was an exciting day
for all who were involved,” said Daser. “It was great to see
many of the alumni athletes come out and have a good time,
playing some good soccer.”
Alumni ended the day with a trip
to Park Bench in Buckhead with
thanks to former Panther Fransisco
Vidal. A special thanks goes to
Scott Mora for supplying Powerade
at the event.
