Ms. Kitty`s Corner Tell Everyone to Dine Cantina Laredo
April 2013 Preston Royal Preschool, 5600 Royal Lane, Dallas TX 75229, phone 214-987-3446 Ms. Kitty’s Corner Tell Everyone to Dine Cantina Laredo We are looking forward to our Scholastic Book Fair April 8-12, 2013. It is an exciting event for the children and the teachers. We will have display cases containing some wonderful new fiction and non-fiction books for preschoolers and beginning readers. I am certain you can find Kitty Ammann, Director some new favorites to add to your nightly reading repertoire. Please see the article on page 2 for all the details, including our new evening shopping event with wine and cheese on April 11th. Bring everyone you know to eat at (or order from) Cantina Laredo at Preston & Royal on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 beginning at 5:00. The food is wonderful. Ask your family, friends, neighbors, church choir, and motorcycle buddies to join us. If we get at least 100 people to show up and tell the host “I’m with Preston Royal Preschool,” PRP will get 10% of the total evening sales, including food and alcohol. This is an awesomely good deal for us!! As May approaches, this is a good time to consider how you will continue to develop your child’s fine motor skills during the summer months. These skills are one of the primary components to kindergarten readiness. You can start now to collect some of the supplies you will use. Ideas include Play Doh with a rolling pin and plastic knives, hole punches, squeeze squirters and balls, spinning tops, lacing cards, big tweezers to pick up small toys like counting bears, buttons, pompoms and so much more. Add all kinds of arts and crafts supplies, games like “Ants in the Pants”, “Don’t Break the Ice” and puzzles to put together and you are well on your way to a summer of maintaining and increasing skills. Here is a link to their Dinner Menu if you want to call an order in and then pick-up. http://www.cantinalaredo.com/menu/dinner.pdf Practicing self-help skills including using utensils, dressing and doing small chores also help with muscle development and differentiation. If you would like help with ideas, just ask any of the staff at PRP; we’d be happy to help. Also, it is suggested by developmental experts that time spent on passive entertainment, including cell phone apps, Game Boy, PlayStation or Xbox should be minimized, as they will not help build a good pencil grasp pattern. The school will have orange decorations to cheer on the boys and girls playing soccer via the YMCA on the PRP team. Shout out to Kate Kennedy for organizing this year’s team. Wacky Wednesday is April 24 Wacky Wednesday, by Dr. Seuss, is one of our favorite storybooks. It is great fun to discover all the wacky occurrences in the illustrations. There are shoes walking up the wall, front doors with no house attached, flying things that don’t fly; you get the idea. We will celebrate our own Wacky Wednesday on April 24, 2013. Your children may dress for the occasion by wearing inside out or backwards clothing, mismatched socks, a silly hat or whatever strikes their fancy. On the 24th, start looking for wackiness as you cross the playground. The classrooms will be filled with changes for your child to spot, including friends that look a bit different than they usually do. It will be a fun day, designed to increase your child’s observation skills. Bunnies Found in the Garden In March, three baby bunnies without their mommy were found at Preston Royal Preschool. Ms. Laurie snapped some photos, including the one with spinach leaves. Look how little the bunnies are. They have gone to live with Ms. April. Scholastic Book Fair is April 8 - 12 Our Scholastic Book Fair theme – Story Laboratory: Reading Gives You Super Powers – is part of an exciting reading and fundraising event that brings to school a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books will motivate them to learn to read. Like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they will become. The school earns points, based on the amount of books sold, that are used to purchase books and equipment for the school. Monday, April 8 is the start of Book Fair week. Parent volunteers will help the MWF children make their book wish lists. Hours: 8:30 – 9:15am and 12:151:15pm Tuesday, April 9 is the day TT children will make their wish lists with the help of parent volunteers. Teachers finalize their wish lists for their classrooms. Hours: 8:30 – 9:15am and 1:15-2:15pm Wednesday, April 10 is Parents’ Day during which muffins and coffee will be served to shopping parents starting at Early Bird drop off. Hours: 8:00 – 9:15am and 12:15-1:15pm Thursday, April 11 is Family and Friends Day, including evening shopping. In the morning, grandparents or dear friends can shop the book fair and have muffins and coffee beginning at 8:00am. In the evening, adults are invited for wine and cheese and book shopping from 6:30-8:30pm. Our school gets double points for books bought on this day. Hours: 8:00 – 9:15am, 12:15-1:15pm and 6:308:30pm Friday, April 12 is the last day of the book sale. Preston Royal Preschool Handprint April 2013 Page 2 of 7 Story Time at Withers Elementary Children of all ages are invited to DISD’s Harry C. Withers Elementary School’s library for Little Bookworms Club for a preschool story, snack, and craft. Our last session of the year is Wednesday, April 10, 2:15 – 3:00 and the book is Plant A Kiss by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. You do not have to live in the zoned area to attend. The school address is 3959 Northaven Road, Dallas, TX 75208 2012 Tax Prep Time and Flex Benefits For households in which both parents are working, you will need Preston Royal Preschool’s EIN to deduct tuition payments for 2012. It is 75-1039927. Timely Tuition can provide receipts online. Please contact Ms. Emily or Ms. April if you need any assistance. Happy Birthday and Dept of Health The Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) has clarified deadlines for when parents must show proof to the preschool that their child is vaccinated. Instead of just having to be current for the start of school, parents are asked to provide preschools with an updated shot record within one month of their child turning 2, 3, and 4. We have listed by age what your child will need to be immunized against and screened for according to TDSHS minimums. Please let us know if you have questions. 2nd Birthday – First dose of Hepatitis A vaccine is needed, if not given sooner. PRP will need proof of this immunization by 25 months. 3rd Birthday - Second dose of Hepatitis A vaccine is needed, if not given sooner. PRP will need proof of this immunization by 43 months, so you technically have until 3½ to get this immunization. Field Trip to Dallas Zoo is April 16 PRP is closed for one day so all the children, teachers, and parents can go to the Dallas Zoo on Tuesday, April 16, 2013. Some parents choose to take off from work to escort their child for the day while others arrange for a grandparent, nanny, uncle or classmate’s family to take their child. A form will come home for you to purchase discounted zoo tickets and Preston Royal Preschool T-shirts if needed. We ask everyone to return the form so we know which children are coming and who they are bringing as their adults. We also want to know which families will be riding the DART Red Line. We hope you and your child can join us for the day! On April 16, the DART Red Line train that we will ride leaves the Forest Lane station at 8:45, Walnut Hill at 8:48, and Mockingbird Station at 8:56. It will arrive at the zoo at 9:22. Children under 5 ride for free. The center doors of each car of every DART train are designed for “everything that rolls” such as strollers, wheelchairs, and bikes. Those that prefer to drive need to park and be at the zoo entrance by 9:25. The next step is for children and their parent to find their teacher to check in. Each teacher will have a specific colored balloon to help her be spotted easily. Once everyone is checked in, we will all enter the zoo. At 11:30, we meet at the Cat Green in Zoo North to eat lunch. Some families bring lunch while others purchase it at the Zoofari Food Court nearby. After lunch people can continue touring the zoo, or head home for a well-deserved rest. For more information and parking fees, check out http://www.dallaszoo.com/default.htm For more information on DART, see http://www.dart.org/fares/fares.asp 4th Birthday - Vision and Hearing Screenings. PRP will be looking for a copy of the results by 48 months. Preston Royal Preschool Handprint April 2013 Page 3 of 7 Parents’ Club Board Needs You The Preston Royal Preschool Parents’ Club is looking for some moms and dads to organize events for the 2013-2014 school year. We need parents to serve on the Parents’ Club Board, to lead event committees, and to be members of committees. Current President Amanda Guillot and next year’s President Kimberly Bowe will be hosting a volunteer coffee at morning drop off on Thursday, April 25 from 8:00 – 9:30am to give parents the opportunity to sign up for a committee that is of interest to you and fits your timetable. If you can’t make it, email Amanda Guillot at [email protected] and let her know how you would like to help the school. End of Year Celebration is May 14. Save the date for Tuesday, May 14, 2013, 6:30-8:00 pm for our annual end of year dinner at Preston Royal Preschool. Join us to honor our retiring teachers Ms. Mary Ann and Ms. Gloria, say thank you to all teachers, and to properly send off our Kinder-bound children. No pot luck this year - a catered dinner will be served. Invitations will follow. Change in format: The End of Year Celebration is the new name for the “Teacher Appreciation Dinner.” In addition to celebrating our teachers and staff, we will have a send off for students who will start kindergarten in the fall. We will also start in the Sanctuary for the program to allow us to hear Ms. Kitty, see the teachers being recognized, and help manage the food lines as people move to the Fellowship Hall for dinner. The Parents’ Club Board decided to go with a caterer instead of the pot luck from past years in hopes of making it easier on families and to ensure we have enough food for everyone. Easter Egg Extravaganza in Photos See the photo collage of the Easter Egg Hunt on page 6. Thanks to parents for the sending plastic eggs filled with surprises and thank you to Ms. Caroline, Ms. Nikki, and Ms. Kim for the photos. Preston Royal Preschool Handprint April 2013 Tips for New Parents DART and Children – Children under 5 ride free. The middle doors of each DART traincar are level with the platform, so you can roll the stroller into the train car. Got To Go Potty - Please send your child in stretchable, easy-on/easy–off pants or shorts for using the bathroom. Accidents happen when they can’t get pants unbuttoned in time. Labeling - Please be sure to label each piece of clothing your child wears or brings, especially sweaters. It's amazing what can be misplaced! Parent Conference – Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences will be on Tuesday, May 7 for 15 – 20 minutes. The children will not attend school that day, but parents will have the opportunity to visit with their child’s teacher during the pre-arranged time. Childcare will be available in the Muscle Room at the school during your conference time. Teacher Appreciation Days in May – Check in with your room parent for ideas on an end of year thank you gift for your teacher. Person with Database Skills Needed Do you currently work with databases or have that type of skill? Ms. Kitty and the Parents’ Club could use your MS excel/access/sql skills for organizing current and former student contact information as well as our auction donor list. We could use help now through July. Contact Kimberly Bowe at [email protected] if you would like to help.
