We are pleased to support the participation of the Frontier Trail Junior
High School Concert Band in the Kansas Music Educators Association Convention. The Frontier Trail Concert Band, under the capable director of Mrs. Inrrie
Holt, represents outstanding band performance capabilities of junior high
students.
As an integral part of our curriculur progxam at the junior high school
level, students have the opportunity to exhibit excellent instrumental music
abilities. Recognizing the importance of all musical progams as an important
leaming experience for students, the Olathe Disuict Schools proudly supports
the leadership of Mrs. Lonie Holt and the achievement of students from Frontier

Greetings,
Frontier Trail Junior High School's Concert Band is extremely proud
and pleased to perform for the Kansas Music Educators'Association's 1992-93
state convention. The KMEA has long been recognizd,for thefu commitrnent to
outstanding music education across the nation. It is our hope that our students
can perform to that level of excellence.
The students in our bands have performed admirable since Frontier
Trail opened its doors four years ago under the direction of Mrs. Lorrie Holt.
Our students are a credit to their school, their parents, their director and to
themselves. Their challenge at this convention is not an easy one, but is one
which these students relish.
An invitation to such a performance indicates the level of excellence
that has been established at our schml in this short period of time. This opportunity ttrat you have afforded us by this invitation will provide us with the
impetus to continue to mintain ttrat level of excellence in the future. On behalf
of the Olathe School District" the staff and snrdents of Frontier Trail Junior High
School, and the community which supports our fine program, we wish you a

Program Notes
r Am was commissioned by craig Aune and the cedar Rapids Prairie High School Band
of Cedar Rapids, Iowa in February 1990. It is written in memory of Lynn Jones, a
baritone saxophone player who was killd in an auto accident during the winter. The
aleatoric section is intended to represent the fogry morning of the crash. The words "I
fun" are takerr fronr a poem ihat Lynn wrote just days beiore his death. The piece is not
intended in any way to be an elegy. kutead, it is a celebration, and reaffirmatioru of life.

Lynnlones
Heroic Music is based on a theme which is over nro hundred years old. Written
originally as an instrumental solo with accompaniment, it appears in a group of solos
called "Heldenmusik" or "Heroic Music". This is the premiere performance of this march
which will be released as part of the Wingert-Jones Achievement Series in 1993.
Lorrie S. Holt is in her fourth
year as Director of Bands at Frontier
Trail Junior High School. Mrs. Holt
holds a Bachelor of Music Education
Degree from the University of MissouriKansas City Conservatory of Music.
Prior to teaching in the Olathe School
District, Mrs. Holt taught two years at
Bonner Springs High School and Junior
HigtrSehool. Shebegan teaching in the
Olathe District in 1985 as Assistant
Band Director at Olathe South High
School in addition to several elementary schools.
Mrs. Holt is currently serving as the KMEA District I Middle
Level Band Chairpenon. She is a member of MENC, KMEA, KBA, and
the Westem Missouri Brittish Brass Band. Originally a native of Liberfy, Missouri, Mrs. Holt and her husband, Gene,. currently reside in
Shawnee, Kansas.
Robert E. Foster has been
director of bands at the University of
KanSas since 1971. He had previously
served as assistant director ofbands at
the University of Florida following a
successful teaching experience in the
public schools of Austin and Houston,
Texas.

Mr. Foster has served on the
board of directors of the National Band
Association, Kansas Band Association,
Foundation,
College Band Directors National AssoJohn Philip Sousa
ciation, and the American Bandmasters Association. He is President of
the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, and of the National
Band Association, the world's largest band organization. He has served
as President of the Southwest Division of the College Band Directors
National Association, and as chairman of the 1989 North American Band
Directors Coordinating Committee, is on the Selection Commiuee of the
ABA/Ostwald Composition Contest, and is a member of the Intemational
Jury of the Sudler Intemationd Wind Band Composition Competition.
A well known composer and author, he is also a member of MENC,
KMEA, TBA, Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha, and an honorary member and
former district govemor of Kappa Kappa Psyfiau Beta Sigma.

The olathe Band program is open to all students and begins in
the fifth grade. Beginning students provide their own instruments and
meet for thrity minutes every other day and on altemating Fridays.
There are twenty two elementary schools, five juniorhigh schools, and
three high schools with verticat scheduling for band directors according
to attendance areas.
Frontier Trail Junior High School is in its fourth year with a
student enrollment of seven hundrd eighty nine. The band program has a
total enrollment of two hundred five students. The program consists of
The Concen Band, The Advanced Band, The Intermediate Band, and
two beginning band classes. The Jaguar lazzBand is an extra curricular
group which practices once a week beforc school.
The concert Band is made up of eighth and ninth grade students
selected by an audition process which takes place each spring. Sixty five
percent of these students arc studying privately and most have chosen to
take a solo or ensemble to festival this spring. All students electing to
participate in solo-ensemble festival are being taught before or after
school once per week. The Concert Band has received first division
ratings at world of Fun Festival of Bands and at Emporia state university Band Festival.
