MiniVAN Canvassing Instructions
MiniVAN Canvassing Instructions MiniVAN Overview MiniVAN is an application that can be downloaded on the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android phone. This brand new technology gives volunteers the opportunity to canvass without any paper walk packets or clipboards, by allowing users to upload canvass maps, targeted voters, and necessary coding directly to their smartphone or tablet. Furthermore, information that is gathered while canvassing with MiniVAN can be directly synced, in real time, into our voter database. Canvassing with MiniVAN makes our campaign more efficient and more effective. It’s also a fun way to canvass. Elizabeth Warren’s campaign is the first statewide field program in the country to make MiniVAN canvassing a central part of our voter contact program. By using MiniVAN, you are not only helping elect Elizabeth, but paving the way for the next generation of grassroots activism. Before you arrive at your canvass staging location: Download the MiniVAN application Before you arrive at your canvass staging location, make sure you have successfully downloaded the MiniVAN app. On your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Andriod phone visit your “App Store.” From there, search for MiniVAN and download the “MiniVAN Touch” application. It’s free! 1
Make sure you can successfully log in When you open the MiniVAN application, you will be asked to log in. You must have a Votebuilder account and password with the Elizabeth Warren campaign in order to log in. If you do not have an account, please reach out to your local Elizabeth Warren field staffer and they can set one up for you! You will be asked to enter a URL; please type in “votebuilder.com.” Then enter your Votebuilder username and password. After you have logged in successfully you will be asked to choose “Massachusetts My Campaign” or “Massachusetts My Voters.” Please choose “Massachusetts My Voters.” 2
When you arrive at your canvass staging location: Touch base with your local Elizabeth Warren field staffer or Team Leader • Let your campaign point of contact know that you will be canvassing with MiniVAN. • You will still need to collect literature, get an Elizabeth lapel sticker, sign out a walk packet, and you may want to take a paper copy of the script to review. • If a paper packet is available, you may want to take it as a backup in case your phone battery runs low. • Note: if you are canvassing in a pair, you can load the same list onto more than one phone or tablet. Loading your list After you have decided what canvass packet you would like to walk, please find the twelve digit list number associated with your turf on the canvass sign-‐out sheet. Then, open the MiniVAN app and log in. When you have successfully logged in, hit the button in the upper left corner of the screen that says “List #.” That button will take you to a page where you will need to enter a twelve-‐digit list number. After you have hit “Submit,” MiniVAN will take you to a summary page and you will want to hit “Download List.” Before leaving your canvass staging location, make sure that you have downloaded the correct list and that it has loaded properly. 3
Canvassing How to find your doors There are three different ways to view your canvass packet in MiniVAN -‐ by street, by person, and on a map. By Street Addresses in your canvass packet are listed alphabetically by street. At each address MiniVAN lists the number of voters in the household. To view the voters you are looking to speak with, just touch the street address. By Person Voters are listed alphabetically by last name. This view is great for follow-‐up calls when you return from canvassing. However, it is not optimal for finding the houses of the voters you need to speak to. 4
By Map View The map-‐view shows streets where you will be canvassing. The houses of voters on your list are marked by a pin. When you touch one of the pins, the address of the home shows up, as well as the number of people you are looking to speak with in the household. By touching the blue arrow near the address, you will be able to view the name/names of the voters you are looking to speak with. After you have canvassed a home, the pins will change color – orange for “Not Home” and black for completely “canvassed.” Talking to Voters When you select a voter MiniVAN will bring up a screen with their vital information, including age, gender, and party affiliation. On the bottom of the screen, you will see an option for "script" -‐ this will bring up the canvass script and give you talking points, as well as an opportunity to identify the voter’s support for Elizabeth. If you have been canvassing for a while, and don’t need to view the script you can scroll down and have the option to “Hide Script Text.” 5
Recording Your Conversations After your conversation at the door, be sure to record how the person is inclined to vote (their Voter ID). You can do this by selecting the “Warren ID” Button and then selecting the voter’s response on the next screen. If you were not able to have a conversation with the voter you are looking for, you can swipe their name on your screen and mark them as “Not Home.” If a voter on you list has moved, refused to disclose who they are voting for, or the house is inaccessible, go to the voter “Stats” page and hit “Status.” 6
When you have completed your walk packet: Syncing Your Data After you have completed your walk packet and returned from canvassing, return to the Main MiniVAN Menu by hitting the “back” button. On the bottom right hand corner, select the “Sync” option. On the next screen you will be asked to log in and enter your VAN password again. After entering your password, you will need to select "Massachusetts My Voters.” You will then see four options for syncing your data -‐ ALWAYS select "Sync data and keep canvass results.” A confirmation message will ask if you are certain you want to sync your data -‐ please select "okay". Congratulations on getting yourself set-‐up and using MiniVAN! 7
