Over a Century of Customer Satisfaction Sioux Falls Construction Company Cover Story Page 80 Okland Construction Realizing Adobe’s Vision of Sustainability in Utah www.usbuildersreview.com Triangle Building Products Corporation Advancing Across Long Island’s Housing Market Produced by Chuck McKenna & Written by Chelsea Cook Bruce Meltzer, president of Triangle Building Products Corporation (TBP), grew up around lumber and developers for most of his life. Bruce’s father, Abe, originally ran the business in the 1970s under the name Triangle Pacific Corporation (TPC). The Medford location was instrumental in developing growth in the New York Metropolitan area, which increased substantially after TPC’s acquisition of Island Coal and Lumber in the center of Long Island. TPC prospered as a lumber, millwork and kitchen cabinet supplier. Bruce ran TPC’s New York lumberyards and his brothers ran the kitchen cabinet manufacturing and saw mill operations under the tutelage of their father. New divisions of TPC operations sprouted up over the years, expanding with the offering of trusses and other prefabricated housing components, windows and other building products. The expansion further cemented TPC’s mutually beneficial relationships with major housing developers in the New York Metropolitan area. More projects poured in and the company was able to expand to multiple locations, including 17 lumberyards on the East Coast and three West Coast saw mills. In addition, TPC also was the largest manufacturer of kitchen cabinets in the country for several years. TPC was later sold to Armstrong World Industries Inc., but Bruce was not giving up his roots. He opened and subsequently purchased the Long Island location of TPC, forming TBP in 1993. TBP refocused, discontinued the retail operation and was geared specifically to serve the needs of the modern day multifamily and single-family homebuilders on Long Island in response to the continued vibrancy of the market. Supply and Demand, Adapt and Advance While TBP supplies an impressive selection of diverse products for its clients, the management team – led by Meltzer and the Flaherty family – is always looking for ways to improve its product mix. “We’ve always tried to maximize our impact in our marketplace by offering what we call a total package concept,” says Bruce. The total package concept is a service that the company has been providing successfully for many years. The concept pulls and compiles choices from TBP’s product line of lumber, kitchen cabinets, trusses, windows, millwork, prefabricated walls and other components. 51 Northeast concept to each customer and seeing each project through from design to groundbreaking to completion. Every aspect of the prefabricated component package is manufactured at TBP’s Medford factory and distributed to the client’s jobsite. TBP’s experienced staff members value engineers, and organize the project to be serviced as flawlessly as possible. The team completed a 400-unit Enlisted Men’s Housing project some time ago in just 10 months, of which the contractor received a commendation from the U.S. Navy. TBP leaves other suppliers in the dust by going the extra mile and offering the total package 52 52| | USBuildersReview Summer 2012 Edition V The company has applied the team’s concept to many large rental projects in the Metropolitan area. TBP completed a 150-unit rental four-story apartment located on a 2.7acre transit-oriented site with an attached 5,000-square foot parking garage and clubhouse. Each units’ kitchen boasts stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops, in addition to the high-end cabinets courtesy of TBP. “We supplied all the labor required for the framing as well as window, kitchen and decking installation for this huge building,” says Bruce. “It was an impressive job.” Covering the Entire Housing Spectrum TBP is very focused in the luxury single-family market both in Long Island’s Gold Coast and in the Hamptons. “We are packaging many of our products in the high-end market as well,” says Bruce. “It seems that the people with the money are still buying. Those Gold Coast and Hampton homes are selling now and it’s the strongest market on Long Island.” While TBP covers the entire spectrum of housing, from mid-market townhouses to rental apartment complexes, the team has found it lucrative to expand the market. “Some of these contracts can aggregate $3 million in a single order,” continues Bruce. The company is presently supplying materials on a family compound consisting of a main house and guesthouse for a very prominent financier in the Hamptons. However, every job brings its own set of complications. According to Bruce, the financier was concerned about the weather conditions affecting the high-end materials and production schedule and erected a tent over the home to expedite the construction process. TBP doesn’t rest on its past achievements. “We have an ongoing quest to provide the best valued products and technology to better service our customers,” says Bruce. The team at TBP understands what each client wants, and knows how to provide what they need based upon the customer’s requirements. The company’s impressive track record of competitive pricing and assisting each customer to bring each project in on time and on budget allows the team more access into a recently contracting market place. Regardless of the nature of the project, Triangle Building Products Corporation will continue to utilize the team’s expertise, facilities and resources to whatever degree the company’s clients may desire. • 53
