For racing purposes, and for those who
could afford it, during the late 1950’s
and early 1960’s, Porsche also offered a
356 GT version bodyshell, which was
built to a lightweight specification.
Weight reduction was achieved by
fitment of lightweight aluminium doors,
bonnet and boot-lid. The front and rear
bumper overiders were removed and
Plexiglass windows were fitted with a
leather pull-strap inside to raise the side
window. Inside the cockpit, much of the
trim was deleted to save further weight,
leaving
two
simple
lightweight
aluminium front bucket seats fitted with
the rear seats eliminated and a steel rollhoop also usually installed. Typically
these cars were also fitted with GT
versions of the Carrera four-cam engine,
which were equipped with different
carburettors, steeper camshafts and
higher compression than the road version
in order to raise performance. A great
amount of success was achieved by the
factory and privateers with these cars in
all aspects of competition, from Rallies
and hill climbs to International circuit
racing.
