January went by in a flash with all the meetings and planning of events for both social and drivers’ education for the 2016 season. There was a lot of discussion and a few members who stepped up this month to help get some programs going for the near future. It looks like we will be bringing back Rally events this year with a potential event coming up this summer. We will have more information on that as we work to put a more detailed plan together, but the future looks bright. While we have good news on the rally events, we have a less than positive announcement in regard to our Autocross events. Our 2016 Autocross season at Lakeland is on hold since we lost our pavement due to a new building being constructed. We have one event on the calendar for Autocross, Saturday July 23rd at Pittsburgh International Race complex in conjunction with our Drivers Education event taking place the same weekend. PittRace has an excellent vehicle dynamics area with a huge amount of flat smooth pavement perfect for Autocross. We hope to see our Autocross regulars there and maybe attract some new participants wanting to try Autocross for the first time. The Autocross team and board members have started the process to find new pavement with our own external search. However, we currently have 653 members, and we are asking if anyone has an idea or lead on where we could hold an Autocross event. It would be great to have a member that currently has access to or knows of a location we could use. That would help speed up the process and get our events running again soon. Please get in touch with myself or Brad Kennett if you have any leads that could be of help to us. We greatly appreciate any help we can get from our members. With our social events in January, we had great turnouts at both Whirlyball and our first Tech Session of the year at Detailed Xpress. RuAn has a great event planned this month with a return visit to Cleveland Whiskey and Magnet. If you didn’t make it to the last one, Brad Kennett put together previously, I encourage you to sign up for this one as it’s an event not to miss! I also would like to correct our new member party date. Due to scheduling conflicts, we will now be holding the party on March 12th. Location will still be Porsche Beachwood. See the details in our events section of Voices this month for more detail. On a more personal note, I am a big fan of endurance racing and likely you will be reading this right after I get back home from Daytona. This will be my 4Th trip to Daytona International Speedway for the IMSA Rolex 24 hour sports car race. The race this year takes place a week later than usual with it being on the 30th and 31st of January. The Rolex is a race like no other you have ever attended. Porsche will once again be campaigning their GT class 911 race cars and just like every other year, I watch in anticipation of a victory for our beloved manufacturer. The race itself is a twice around the clock battle of man and machine and while it’s exciting to watch on your T.V. at home, there’s no comparison with being at the track. It’s a sensory overload fully taking in the sights, sounds and smells. You witness firsthand the crews, team owners and drivers experiencing the highs of adrenaline and the lows of exhaustion. Ultimately coming down to the sweet taste of victory for some and jarring defeat for others. What sets the 24 apart is that you pretty much have access to almost anywhere within the Daytona Speedway. With your general admission, you can tour the garages and paddock area full of teams and their cars, along with choosing any seat you wish in the grandstands anytime during the 24 hour race. There’s something special about sitting in the first row of seats on the start finish line at 2am in the dark while cars pass in a blur of light and sound at close to 200mph. If you have never attended, it is for sure a bucket list item. Even if you’re not a huge racing fan, I urge you to go, even just once, to feel the energy and witness the spectacle first hand. It will be something you will never forget. |2| 2016 NORPCA OFFICERS *President Bryan Lingruen 4450 Ridgestone Way. A number of regions are holding events to welcome new members or introduce their newly elected officers. A few regions hold their formal banquets now as opposed to the end of the year which is always so busy; while others have held fundraising events to help benefit their communities. This time of year many regions hold tech sessions which are designed to help us better prepare for the upcoming driving season. Most of the regions have held their Planning Meetings to help establish a preliminary calendar of events for the year. Amongst the events already planned are numerous DEs. Zone 4 regions host Driver’s Education events from April through October. These events are designed to provide a safe, structured, and controlled teaching and learning environment so that participants can improve their driving abilities and acquire a better understanding of vehicle dynamics and driving safety. They take place at a number of tracks including Gingerman, Grattan, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Mid-Ohio, Pitt Race, Putnam Park, Waterford Hills and Watkins Glen; so why not consider attending one this year. As I look at all of the Zone 4 regions’ calendars, I am pleased to see that many regions are working together to create new events as well as helping to promote each other’s events. Over the past few years, I have attended some spectacular events throughout the zone providing me the opportunity to meet truly remarkable individuals. I highly recommend that you regularly visit the Zone 4 website, and check out the events page which contains a calendar of some of the many events taking place throughout the zone. Plan to attend some fantastic events during this year whether it’s in your region or a neighboring one. Borla cat back exhaust was run on my 2014 Cayman S for 1 year - about 15000 miles and still runs great, sounds throaty and bad Ass! I received many compliments on the sound from this unit. In a notification we received from the LCC administration it was stated that although we had been trouble free tenants for many years, it was no longer possible to continue our association starting in 2016. The college has been given a grant to erect a building on the acreage formerly used as a student parking lot. So it’s goodbye to planting pylons there on Sundays. Our new President, Bryan, has had experience in searching the local area for autocross pavement. He said he found it to be a difficult task. Therefore, he asked all in attendance at the board meeting to help join in the search. So I am asking you to solicit any friends and neighbors in the commercial real estate business to help us find a property. It would have to be vacant on a Sunday; preferably something like a closed shopping mall or office building site. Liability insurance is not a problem since PCA National provides $10 mil coverage for autocross events. Our autocross chairmen, John Hulick and Doug Bradley, have already begun a search, but the more eyes & ears we have on the hunt, the sooner we can find a solution. NOR has a brand new autocross equipment trailer (see December ’15 Voices). Now we need a place to park it. | 32 | Voices from the Trunk c/o Pat Ellert 7559 Brecksville Rd.
