From the East!...
Brethren, Ladies and Friends,
Greetings and salutations Brethren, Ladies, and Friends.
Last month was Masonic Homes month, our Festive Board
raised close to $400, and we attended the centennial
celebration at the Covina Homes. Proving, once again, how
easy it is to have fun and support worthy causes.
Thank you, and congratulations, to Worshipful Eric Bertolli for organizing
a record breaking Festive Board. What a wonderful evening, celebrating
our beloved Brother Spyros Pappas, and supporting our Masonic homes.
July is the month when we celebrate our nations independence. It also
serves as a reminder to celebrate our own personal independence, as
well as reflect on patriotic ideals such as liberty, human rights, and the
freedoms we all enjoy.
July is also the month when we will be hosting the District #521 Stated
Meeting Dinner Swap. We had a great time at our last visit to Reseda
Lodge and we look forward to hosting both Reseda and Home lodges
this month. We have a very special after dinner entertainment planned
for Ladies, guests and prospects.
I look forward to seeing you all at the stated meeting dinner and at our
annual lodge picnic!

From the West!...
Greetings Brethren and Ladies!
On June 9th, we heard a 2nd degree proficiency by Brother Andranik
Khacheryan. After Brother Khacheryan is finished with his
proficiency we had the pleasure hearing Brother Counter’s
presentation on the second degree trestle board!
I try to spend time thinking about myself and where I can make
improvements. One of personality traits which I work on is that I struggle to truly
listen to people sometimes. When there are several things going on that day or
when I am “still at work” I notice I am just “hearing” the person who is talking. At
these times I try to remember the precious jewel of the attentive ear.
"Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force...When we are
listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand. Ideas actually begin to
grow within us and come to life...When we listen to people there is an alternating
current, and this recharges us so that we never get tired of each other...and it is
this little creative fountain inside us that begins to spring and cast up new
thoughts and unexpected laughter and wisdom. ...Well, it is when people really
listen to us, with quiet fascinated attention, that the little fountain begins to work
again, to accelerate in the most surprising way."

These are very powerful words which do a great job pointing out how important it
is to listen, not only for the person talking but also for the person hearing. They
also remind me to slow down and not only hear people but also to listen to them.
It could be that small amount of extra effort that could allow me to connect with
another person or to hear a cry for help. It could be much more important than it
may at first seem.

From the South!...
Greetings Brethren, Ladies and Friends!
June brought us a busy month of events. Starting with
another successful Child ID, followed by a wonderful
Festive Board in honor of Bro. Spyros Pappas. It was a
record breaking event, with over seventy attendees for
the evening. The bar is now set for next year!
Stated Meeting will be held on July 7th and will be catered in
house. This month Hollywood lodge will be hosting the district
dinner, so we expect a big crowd. We will also be having our July
Post Sated Meeting Dinner After Party. All ladies, guests and
prospects are invited to stay after dinner for a variety show with
music, comedy, poetry and so much more!
Please join us on July 16th for our annual Picnic. It will be held at
Grape Arbor park in Calabasas and will begin at 11:00 am. As
always, everyone and their family is welcome. There will be plenty
of food, games and fellowship. This year we are joining forces with
the San Fernando Valley York Rite and having a joint event. This
will enable us to extend our Masonic reach to an even greater
number of brothers and their families. Don’t miss this event.

FROM BEHIND THE EAST…
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,
What a turn of events at last month's Stated Dinner. Due to
unexpected circumstances the Variety Show was rescheduled for the July 7 Stated, which will make for a wonderful
event to share with the District on their visit. In lieu of that I
arranged for an intimate evening with a Violinist serenading
the small group of attendees. Thank you to those who attended, and took
the time to say hello to me on the IPad.
A quick shoutout to Eric Bertolli for a memorable Festive Board. It was an
amazing turnout, and made me so happy to see a room full of familiar faces having fun together and honoring Spyros Pappas. I loved seeing you
all there, and hope for another chance to chat at the picnic.
Now that I'm back from Ohio with my 10 year old niece Bella, I can't wait
to bring her to this coming Stated Dinner. Not only do we have the fabulous Variety Show, but it gives Bella an opportunity to meet more of the
wonderful people we have in our community that serve as positive role
models.
Lastly, let's not forget about the annual lodge picnic on July 16th. Last
year I had a fantastic time meeting and developing relationships with so
many new people. I anticipate more great food, games, and conversations
while my little ones cavort around the various activities. I also hear that
San Fernando York Rite is joining forces with us this year in celebration,
which in my mind pretty much assures a grand time will be had by all.
A quick reminder that the post Stated Dinner Variety Show and picnic are
both open events for family, guests, and prospects. Lots to look forward to
this month. I hope to see everyone there!

We will have social hour beginning at 6:30 with the lecture beginning at about
7:15 pm. It will be held in the Hollywood Lodge social hall, refreshments will
be provided and the dress code is lodge/business wear (jacket and tie).

Hello members and friends of Hollywood Lodge #355. Hollywood DeMolay is back and this time we have two new friends in waiting to beco
me brothers in our work. On another note during the Month of May Hollywood DeMolay not only did we have a Mother’s Day café which wa
s a success but we also had our semi-annual installation
of officers and although the process was long and stressful the payoff was well worth it, to start off our new term the day after we were installe
d we went shooting and got some nasty bruises, but shooting was awesome. The days leading up to June 11th were long and stressful as well,
but at the same time it felt like there weren’t nearly
enough hours in each day. The day was soon approaching when the boys of Hollywood Chapter would put on an installation at Santa Barbara
Chapter. When the day finally came, it’s fairly safe to say we were all nervous, but besides a few bumps in the road the Installation went off
without a hitch. The following day, we hosted a
summer kick off beach party with a bonfire after going to the San Fernando Assembly’s Installation of Officers. All three youth orders were i
n attendance, we had Rainbow Girls, Jobs Daughters and other DeMolay from
around the league attend. Although we had an interesting time finding a fire pit to use everyone had a blast. Up
next on the calendar is the event we have been waiting for, the Call of Duty III Videogame Tournament which
will be on the 15th of July, teams of 4 are $30 and single entries are $10 and you will be put on a team, there will be a lockin following if you’d like to stay. We look forward to seeing you there and competing with you.

First, we would like to thank all our Brothers and families who have been able to
participate in this worthy cause.
Casa Pacifica is an organization that provides a wonderful opportunity for children ages 8
to 18. Most of these children are in a desperate place in their lives due to a myriad of
reasons. Their parents could have been killed in an accident, incarcerated, rehab, etc.
leaving these poor kids with nowhere else to go.
Casa Pacifica works hand in hand with the City, County, State Agencies, and Foster
Homes in an effort to place the children in a positive environment, or raise them in-house
until 18 (soon to be 21). The average length of time kids are at Casa Pacifica is 4 years.
We, as Masons, have the opportunity to show these kids that people in community care.
We are starting with gift cards for the BACK TO SCHOOL season. Target date is August
13.
Our Masonic bodies will offer gift cards 4 times a year as special rewards for the kids
who excel in service to others, and scholastic goals.
Masons and our families will send these kids to a local store so they can buy back-toschool supplies with their own money!!! (our gift cards) \
We have picked 4 stores that offer both stationery and clothing. Plus these cards are
available at markets in your area. So please pick up $5, $10, $15 (or more) gift cards at
the check stands and let’s make this one of our finest charitable events.
Our next event will be for Christmas (announcements will be made in lodge)

Democracy in Lodge
Before I became a Mason," announced the New Brother, "I was under the impression it was an
institution of the greatest democracy. I have gathered the idea that it was simple, unassuming; that it
inculcated the principles of our government and that in it all men were equal. I am very fond of my
lodge and the fellows, but I have been disappointed in that respect."
"Why, son, do you find Masonry undemocratic?" inquired the Old Tiler. "I have heard Masonry called
a lot of funny names, but never that!"
"Why, yes, I do!" answered the New Brother. "Seems to me we have a lot of unwritten laws and
customs which are autocratic."
"You might mention a few. I am not too old to learn!" answered the Old Tiler. "This is evidently
going to be good!" he finished.
"Take this idea of not passing between the Altar and the East," began the New Brother. "It's a free
country, yet here is a restriction without rhyme or reason. We salute the Master. He's just a Mason
like the rest of us. We have put him into power. He is our servant, although he has the title of
Master. Take the custom of the officers retiring in favor of the Grand Officers when they visit; why
should we give up our authority and our seats to others no better men than we are?"
"Is that all?" asked the Old Tiler.
"Oh, there are a few more, but those will do. Explain to me where the democracy is in them!"
"When you go to church," countered the Old Tiler, "do you keep your hat on? Does your wife keep
her hat on?"
"Of course she does and I don't," responded the New Brother.
"Why?"
"I take my hat off as a mark of respect to the House of God, of course. She keeps hers on
because...well, er...Oh, it's the custom!"
"It's a free country," responded the Old Tiler. "The minister is just a man like the rest of us. Why not
wear your hat? Why not have your wife take hers off?"
"But I don't take my hat off to the minister, but to God!" was the puzzled answer.
"And your wife keeps hers on because it is the custom for women to remain covered in church,"
responded the Old Tiler. "In lodge you don't fail to salute the Master because it is the custom, and
because you are saluting, not the man who happens to be in the East by the votes of the lodge, but the
exulted station he occupies. You pay respect to religion when you remove your hat in a church."
"How about passing between Altar and East?" asked the New Brother.
"That pretty custom is founded on a very happy idea," explained the Old Tiler. "The
Altar is the foundation seat of Masonic light and wisdom. Upon it lie the Great Lights
of Masonry. Before it rests the charter by means of which a continuously unobstructed
view of the source of all Masonic wisdom, so that the lodge may never be without a
direct connection with the Great Lights. It is the custom to leave the charter always in
his sight, that by no chance may he fail to be responsible for its safekeeping. Nothing
happens to a brother who passes between the Altar and the East any more than would
happen to a man who walked up the aisle of the church and perambulated about the
lectern. But it wouldn't be polite, or respectful, or in keeping with the custom. Your
respect is paid to religion or Masonry, not necessarily to the men who expound either."
"But I still don't see why a sovereign lodge must abdicate authority for any old Deputy
Grand Master who comes along!"
"Then you are very obtuse!" answered the Old Tiler.
"The Deputy Grand Master represents the Grand Master, the supreme Masonic head. In
him is, theoretically, all Masonic wisdom. Why should a Master not offer his gavel to
such knowledge? He merely says, in effect, 'you know more than I do; your years of
service and experience in the craft entitle you to supreme authority. I have less
knowledge, therefore am less fit to preside than you. You have more power and
authority than I, therefore I offer you its symbol while you are with us.' But note the
Master says this to the *position*, not the *man*. Grand Masters do *not* always
know all there is to know any more than kings or presidents do. But we pay that
sovereign respect to the office they hold, while it is held by them, because of the
office."
"My brother, democracy does not mean bolshevism! It does not mean socialism. It
means democracy, in which men are created equal, have equal opportunity, but
reverence to the power they give to those to whom they give it. The United States is a
republic founded on the principles of democracy, and we are proud of our freedom and
our independence, yet we remove our hats to our President and governors, and pay
respect to our courts and our lawgivers, even though they be but men like ourselves. So
it is in Masonry...a simple and unassuming democracy of brotherhood, in which no man
loses his independence because he pays respect to authority."
"Well, of course, you are right, and I am wrong, as usual. It wasn't so good, after all,
was it?"
"Not so good!" responded the Old Tiler. "But Masonic youth, like any other kind, can
be forgiven much if only it is willing to learn."
