ORBAY TIGERS BASKETBALL CLUB was
founded in 1973 by teachers and pupils
of Churston Ferrers Grammar School, a
number of whom are still involved with
the club.
In 2006 Tigers were awarded the national
Clubmark status having met the demanding
Standards set by our governing body, now
Basketball England, and Sport England. It
currently has Three Star accreditation.
We aim to promote the game of basketball
to all people, but particularly the young,
In Torbay and the surrounding areas.
People from the age of seven upwards,
regardless of ability, faith, gender or
race are welcome to join and play
recreational basketball just for fun, or,

Quality Basketball
Training for 7 years upwards
TORBAY TIGERS BASKETBALL CLUB is
run by a dedicated team of volunteers
who receive regular training keeping
them up to date with the latest policies
and developments within the game of
Basketball.
Young people are given every encouragement to develop their skills by the staff
in a safe, relaxed and well supervised
Environment.
The team of coaches is headed by former
England Schoolboys Head Coach, Rick
Wooldridge. They are
normally recruited
from within the club
and include young
players and parents
who have been fully
trained and have become qualified
coaches, referees and
table officials. We
can train up anyone
willing to give us
their help and support.
The exciting game of Basketball was the
creation of Dr John Naismith, PE instructor
at Springfield YMCA, Massachusetts, USA, in
1891. It was played in a
small hall with
structural posts and played
with a soccer
ball shot into peach baskets,
giving the name
of ‘post’ to certain player
positions and the
name of the game. It is the
fastest growing
sport in the UK.
The club currently has teams entered in
the Exeter & District Association Mens
Leagues 1 and 2 for 18 years and upwards.
At the younger age groups Under 18's and
Under 16's lads play in the Basketball
England National League South West Devel
opment Leagues (D-Leagues) and we also
have teams playing in South West Regional
Leagues at Girls under 16 and boys under 16
and under 14.
While there is a natural
progression through the club by age,
the
choice
of
competitions
that
teams are entered in depends on the
availability of players at each age group.
National League entries for the following
Season have to be with Basketball England
by 1st June so by then we already have
a basic idea of the composition of those
teams, but we still could have an influx
of new players joining during the summer.
As part of our search for new talent
Torbay Tigers actively supports the local
schools South Devon Central Venue
Leagues for school years 8-10. Some
skilful young players at even younger
ages find their way into the club’s
teams, joining from 7 years and training
regularly at our junior sessions.
The TORBAY TIGERS Basketball Club meet
regularly throughout the week at various
venues catering for young people from
the age of seven years upwards regardless
of ability, race, faith or gender. Many young
people come along for fun and recreation so
progress through the club not only depends
on a players ability and physical prowess , but
also on the personal choice of the young person.
