Arts
A variety of events showcased different artistic categories at the 2007 Festival,
including Whistler's infamous 72-hour Filmmaker Showdown, where 100
filmmaking teams were narrowed down to 8 finalists. The winners will have their film
screened all over North America and to audiences in over 50 countries. The Pro
Photographer Showdown, also known as the "Sundance festival of action
photography", was also back and exposed to over 2000 attendees with five finalists
competing for a prize of $10,000. Brave Art, featuring urban- and street-inspired art,
and Masterpiece in Motion, showcasing snowboard graphic art, were also highlights.
The Festival also showcased 18 leading urban streetwear and outerwear
brands at the Schick Extreme 3 Fashion Exposed show.

Street and sport fusion
z
One of the most important trends is the mixture of streetwear pieces with outerwear,
layering different styles and colours of T-shirts, polo shirts, hoodies and button-up
shirts.

Key accessories
Accessories are becoming increasingly important mixed with outerwear.
Bandannas are the accessory du jour, worn for function on the hill (over the mouth
and nose) or around the neck on the street. Other trends include wayfarer and
aviator sunglasses and knit and woven vintage looking scarves.

Hippy-chic
Military
Military silhouettes and styling continue to be popular both in streetwear and
outerwear jackets for men and women. The classic M65 jacket silhouette is the
most popular. Also seen are variations with fur-trimmed hoods and asymmetrical
zips.
Knit sweaters
Nordic style sweaters are popular, seen with zigzag, snowflake and winter sports
motifs for a vintage feel.
Men's tailored outerwear
Menswear tailoring continues to be seen in outerwear, with double-breasted
peacoat styling and suit jacket silhouettes popular.
Layering
Unique layering is a notable trend, with many layering different lengths and colours
of T-shirts and even knitted sweaters over hoodies, or knitted scarves over
bandannas.
A new bottom silhouette
Skinny-legged outerwear is the most directional trend seen on the hill. With slim
silhouettes coming from Holden, Burton, and a width-adjustable style from Sessions,
fashion-forward riders are starting to stray from the typical oversized snowboard
pants. Some are even snowboarding in skin-tight denim.
Headwear trends
Pom-pom topped or slouchy and oversized are the two most popular styles of
headwear seen on the hill and in the village. The former has an almost 80s feel in
colour and style. The hand-knit and crochet look that has been popular in previous
years is still relevant and seen in ear-flap styles. Other popular headwear trends
include brimmed newsboy and military caps in solid colours and plaid.
Locally-made products
Many festival goers proudly expressed that the products they were wearing were
small, local brands, often hand-made, creating a personal connection. The
elimination of long-distance shipping also allows for the products to be more
sustainable.
Meaningful clothing
Clothing and accessories, often home-made, that are passed down to
generations become meaningful to the family member by providing memories. One
festival-goer was wearing a sweater made by her grandmother, making her the third
generation to wear the garment. Clothing and accessories that are acquired while
travelling also provide memories of positive experiences.
Hippy-chic
This bohemian look is seen as an evolution and merging of the customisation and
sustainability trends seen at past festivals. Tie-dyed T-shirts, men with long hair or
dreadlocks and recycled clothing allow individuals to express their commitment to
the environment in a unique and personal way.

Lumberjack plaid
z
Plaid continues to surge on as a popular outerwear print or yarn-dye, but in a
new direction: lumberjack plaid. This bold, large-scale plaid was seen in black/white
and red/black combinations, as well as the more traditional subtle earth tones.

Stripes
Stripes, especially in vivid colours, are important and seen on outerwear jackets
and streetwear hoodies
Camouflage still going strong
Camouflage still has a presence in both traditional and abstracted prints,
primarily seen in traditional colour combinations.
Bold patterns
The most directional prints are bold in pattern and colour, as seen from
Volcom, Burton, Section and Roxy. Prints range from fractured faces, gingham,
wallpaper-inspired motifs and optical illusions to letter collages, leaf prints, stripes
and polka dots.
Textured technical fabrics
Interesting textures (herringbone) and wash treatments (distressing) on
performance fabrics give them a street aesthetic.
Denim trends
Of the range of denim styles seen, skinny black washed jeans on men and women
were a noticeable trend. Customisation was seen on some, with multicolour paint
splatters on an artist's pair, pins, buttons and placement prints.
