In 1965 Bishop Kellenberg assigned Father Leo Goggin to go out into ‘the country’ and establish a new Parish. It went from Masses in supermarkets and Baptisms in living rooms to the beautiful Parish we see today under the guidance and care of four more pastors and many dedicated priests, deacons, religious and laity. We will celebrate this year with the following events; a mixture of the Liturgical, spiritual, and social. Please mark your calendar for the following events. Friday, June 12th: 7:30PM Our Parish Music Director, Thomas Tirino, will be performing a Benefit Concert for St. Matthew’s at The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College. 305 North Service Road, Dix Hills, NY Friday ,July 31st: “Parish Day” at Bethpage Ballpark in Islip for a L.I. Ducks baseball game with reserved seating for St. Matthew’s parishioners. (The form is included in the bulletin.) Saturday Sept.19th We will mark the anticipated Feast Day of St. Matthew with a special Mass at 5PM in the church with the glorious sounds of our Parish Choir. Sunday Sept. 20th , a gala Parish Dinner/Dance at Watermill Caterers in Smithtown. To close out the year a Parish Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held to solemnly give thanks for the graces and blessings of the past 50 years. The date will be announced. As part of the continuing celebration of the 50th anniversary of Saint Matthew, the Knights of Columbus, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Council 7479 invites all parishioners to an indoor barbecue in thanksgiving for all our volunteers. Come and enjoy hot dogs, hamburgers, salads and soda Sunday May 31, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. in Msgr. Goggin Hall Free Admission A Word about Baptisms: Baptisms are celebrated on the first and third Sundays of the month at 1:45 PM and the fourth Saturday at 12:30 PM. Please call the Parish Office to arrange for the Baptism of your child. Godparents for Baptism must be at least 16 years of age, have received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation and be "eligible" to be a Godparent. Godparents who are not registered at Saint Matthew’s need a "Letter of Eligibility" (not a Baptismal Certificate) from the Parish they belong to at present. If you have any difficulty or questions about any of these points, please call us. Families that want a so-called “private Baptism” at a time separate from the above with a visiting priest or deacon are advised that no date will be set until the visiting clergy have contacted the Pastor and obtained his permission. If one wishes a particular priest or deacon assigned to the Parish to perform your child’s Baptism it can be done at the regular Parish Baptism administered by that priest or deacon. Naming your children Please remember that the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church obliges Pastors to be sure that children are not given names "contrary to Christian sentiment" at Baptism. Name your children after family members so that they will have a sense of "connection" in a fractured world! The Church asks us to give children the names of Saints for the same reason: so that they may have special intercessors in Heaven and may have a Heavenly "friend" to learn about and imitate. In today's world, your children need all the help they can get: give them the beautiful names of the Saints and of family members and you will be giving them a great treasure! After the gratifyingly large number of Confessions for Easter and the First Confessions this past month I offer this list for your consideration. I saw it recently on a blog and think it is worth sharing. Our Confessionals are “two-sided”. Enter through the curtain, kneel down, and WAIT for the priest to open the slide and speak to you. When the red light shows above the curtain it means somebody is in the compartment. WAIT for them to leave, then enter. Let us: 1) …examine our consciences regularly and thoroughly. Use the time waiting on line. 2) …wait our turn in line patiently; 3) …come at the time confessions are scheduled, not a few minutes before they are to end; 4) …speak distinctly but never so loudly that we might be overheard; 5) …state our sins clearly and briefly without rambling; 6) …confess all mortal sins in number and kind; 7) …listen carefully to the advice the priest gives; 8) …confess our own sins and not someone else’s; 9) …carefully listen to and remember the penance and be sure to understand it; 10) …use a regular formula for confession so that it is familiar and comfortable; 11) …never be afraid to say something “embarrassing”… just say it; 12) …never worry that the priest thinks we are jerks…. he is usually impressed by our courage; 13) …never fear that the priest will not keep our confession secret… he is bound by the Seal; 14) …never confess “tendencies” or “struggles”… Just sins. Confession is not “life coaching.” 15) …never leave the confessional before the priest has finished giving absolution; 16) …memorize an Act of Contrition; 17) …answer the priest’s questions briefly if he asks for a clarification; 18) …ask questions if we can’t understand what he means when he tells us something; 19) …keep in mind that sometimes priests can have bad days just like we do; 20) …remember that priests must go to confession too … they know what we are going through. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION We had 170 children make their First Holy Communion here these past two Saturdays, May 9th and May 16th. The Masses were wonderful! The children were very excited and all looked beautiful. A big thank you to all the teachers who prepared the children so well for this day and the staff who happily volunteered their time at the rehearsals and the Communion Masses came each week: Sr. Bernarda, Gloria Montessano, Olga Mantione, Anne Votta and our Religious Education Coordinator, Carmela Sposato, who is so generous to the Religion Department with her time. Carmela has been teaching for many years and we estimate that she has taught thousands of children during that period. The Eucharistic Ministers, the Knights of Columbus/Ushers, Lectors and Altar Servers who volunteered and helped to make these two days so special, we thank you. We are grateful to Nicole Nicholson, the Director of our Children’s Music Ministry, and our organist, Lee Forsythe, who added to the beauty of each Communion. We can’t forget Luis Flores, Plant Engineer, who kept us comfortable during these past two weeks and who is always helpful to the Religious Education Department. To our priests, Fr. Hewes and Fr. Sikorski, thank you for helping to make both days very memorable for all, with your inspiring and touching homilies. Last, but certainly not least, there is someone who works endlessly and whose contributions have helped to make St. Matthew’s Religious Education Program successful and that is Rita Minder. Her dedication, deep commitment to the children and sense of humor, makes working together a real joy. Today, Sunday, May 17, 2015 is the May Crowning of our Blessed Mother at the 9:30AM Family Mass. All First Holy Communion students have been asked to attend this Mass in their Communion attire. Parents and family members are invited to join us. DAILY OFFERING PRAYER God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. With Mary, the mother of our Lord and of the Church, I pray especially for this month's intentions as proposed by the Holy Father. Amen . May Universal: That, rejecting the culture of indifference, we may care for our neighbours who suffer, especially the sick and the poor. Evangelization: That Mary's intercession may help Christians in secularized cultures be ready to proclaim Jesus. RESPECT LIFE NEWS Spiritual Adoption Program MONTHS SEVEN AND EIGHT – Developing Baby You are in the home stretch with your spiritually adopted baby. He/she is completely formed, and has been since 8 weeks. All he/she is doing now is gaining weight - - and making his/her mother uncomfortable with his/her size. But she is not worried. In a short time, her baby will be born. Your baby’s mother appreciated the prayers you have said for her and her baby throughout the pregnancy. It has not been easy, but your prayers have given her the grace she needed to bring her baby to term. Spiritual Adoption Prayer Dear Jesus, child of Mary, I love you and thank you for your unconditional love. I plead with you to save the life of ______________, the unborn child whom I have spiritually adopted and whose life is threatened by abortion. May this child be allowed to grow in wisdom, age and strength in Your presence and in the sight of all. Sister Kay McCarthy Kathryn Monaco Douglas - Young Widow and Widowers Shortly after her husband’s death, Diane Sweeney started The Bob Sweeney Foundation in memory of her husband Bob. This Foundation provides a weekend at Camp Alvernia in Centerport for young children who had a parent who had recently died. There is no fee for the weekend. In addition, each year the Foundation has a Christmas party for these children and their families. This is a wonderful Foundation as it helps so many children who are grieving the devastating loss of a parent. Knowing the great work that Kathryn Monaco Douglas, along with her friend Arlene Ricca, has done for YOUNG WIDOW AND WIDOWERS here at St. Matthew’s, the Bob Sweeney Foundation honored Kathryn at the Huntington Hilton on April 19th. This was a well deserved honor. Over the last 8 years, Kathryn, who had been a young widow herself, began a group for widows and widowers, 55 years of age and under. She leads 3 groups a year and has helped hundreds of young widow and widowers who come from all over LI and queens to participate in her group. One day when I complemented her for all of the good she has done, she responded, “isn’t that what God wants us to do?” May God continue to bless the good that Kathryn has done so lovingly, prayerfully and selflessly. She is sponsoring a walk on May 31st at Belmont Lake State Park. When Kathryn started the walk, 30 people participated. Last year, there were about 500 people who participated. Please read the form on the next page and consider joining us for the walk. The funds that are raised help the young widow and widowers and their families. Thank you and God bless you. While we have Sisters who are still working and volunteering at 80 years of age and over, we have many, many Sisters who are retired and very ill. I am so inspired and grateful to them for their faith, prayers, example and dedicated service. For the luncheon, we need new and unused gifts, valued at $3 and above. These gifts will be used in raffle baskets and as prizes. Perhaps, you have some that you received at Christmas time. If you would like to donate such gifts, please bring them to me in the Parish Center. We also need baskets - full and/or empty, and gift certificates that will be raffled at the luncheon. In the past, you the wonderful Parishioners of St. Matthew’s have been very, very helpful to us. Recently, many of you even bought chances for the benefit of our many sick, elderly and retired Sisters. Please know how very grateful I am to you for always being so good to us. The Sisters and I promise to pray for you and for all of our wonderful benefactors. Truly, some of the nicest people in the world are at St. Matthew’s. I’m sure you’ll agree! Thank you and God bless you. May you experience the new life of the Resurrection during this Easter Season. Sister Kay McCarthy. May 17th , 2015 The Seventh Sunday of Easter 14 Catholics for Freedom of Religion “Freedom is a gift and a personal responsibility. It is a challenge held out to each generation and it must constantly be won over for the sake of good." Pope Francis Christian Print Shop Wins Case: A Kentucky court overturned a Lexington human rights commission that had found Blaine Adamson guilty of discrimination by refusing to print T-shirts for a gay pride festival. Demonstrators had protested Adamson's business causing him to lose his biggest customers and he was ordered to undergo diversity training. The court, however, disagreed. "It is their Constitutional right ... to not be compelled to be part of an advocacy message opposed to their sincerely held Christian beliefs," wrote Judge J. Ishmael. "The court rightly recognized that the law protects Blaine's decision not to print shirts with messages that conflict with his beliefs and that no sufficient reason exists for the government to coerce Blaine to act against his conscience in this way," said his Alliance Defending Freedom attorney. ADF also argued that if Christians are forced to violate their religious beliefs, then gay & lesbian-owned businesses will be forced to print messages from groups that they, too, disagree with - something that violates the First Amendment. (worldmag.com, 4/27/15; ADF.org, 4/27/15) In defense of the Christian printer, a same-sex couple who own a NJ printing company said, "The idea is that when you own your own business, it's your own art and creation - it's very personal... It takes a long time to build a business... When someone wants to force you to go against it - that's what struck in the heart. I really felt for him." (the blaze.com, 4/27/15) A growing slate of business owners are facing fines and lawsuits over their unwillingness to participate in some celebrations. Christian cake bakers, florists and photographers have argued their professions are forms of speech and they shouldn't be compelled to participate in same-sex weddings against their consciences. U.S. Supreme Court ruling 1977: "We begin with the proposition that the right of freedom of thought protected by the First Amendment against state action includes both the right to speak freely and the right to refrain from speaking at all."
