Just as the Dutch staked new ground when they established New
Netherland, so is Oosten staking new ground in South Williamsburg.
Purchased by the Dutch East India Company from Native American settlers
in 1638, Williamsburg got its name in the 1800s, when it became a hub
for factories, foundries, and shipyards. In the early 1900s, immigrants
flowed into the neighborhood, and by the 1970s, artists began to settle in
Williamsburg's loft buildings.
Today, South Williamsburg is one of the most culturally exciting
neighborhoods in the entire city. The waterfront district, where Oosten
is situated, enjoys a serene location far from the hustle and bustle of
Bedford Avenue, yet is just one subway stop from Manhattan, seconds
from the East River Ferry and right at the base of the Williamsburg Bridge,
