A Magical Combination …
Romantic History, A Scenic View and Great Food
The Shem Creek area dates back to the first recorded history of the United States. Its banks had been
inhabited by the Sewee Indians who gave it its name, a derivation of the Indian word Shemee. In 1670, as a
gift from King Charles II, a small group of Englishmen became its first foreign settlers. As the years passed
and they became more settled and industrious and separated from the English Crown, the Shem Creek area
became the site of the first victory over the British at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. During the
1700’s and 1800’s, Shem Creek became more industrialized, as rice and saw mills were constructed along
its banks. The Civil War, however, brought a temporary stoppage to all of its commerce.
The present day shrimping industry had its beginning in the 1940’s. Shrimp boats left the docks of the
Shem Creek in the early morning hours and returned later in the day to process their catch. As shrimping
continued to grow and the docks became a hub of activity, I decided in 1967, at the young and
impetuous age of 23, to open up my first restaurant on the banks of the Shem Creek. Twelve years later I
expanded it into the original R.B.’s restaurant. It had 35 seats and was located in an old fish shed. It gave
me a chance to live my dream, to serve great food at fair prices in a casual and family-friendly setting.
In 2002 my dream was shattered, when my restaurant burned down. But a year later, with the same
spirit and determination that the Revolutionary War settlers had in 1775 and that I had in 1967, I
rebuilt R.B.’s into what it is today - a state of the art restaurant, featuring an up-to-date kitchen, modern
facilities and comfortable dining. It also has the added attraction from our deck of one of the most
beautiful views on the South Carolina coast, with shrimp and pleasure boats of all kinds bobbing on the
water, pelicans sitting on top of the dock’s piers waiting for their chance to grab a fish, and dolphins
doing cartwheels around the fishing boats, scavenging for their own seafood dinner.
Thanks for dining with us and I hope you enjoyed your visit.
