Originally founded in 1948 by WWII hero Marion Whaley Sr, South Point Services was an island
staple for over forty years. Ask any local to tell you their favorite Whaley's story; we all have one. When I
was twelve years old, my mom was bitten by a dog in the parking lot here. It's not a great story, but it's
my oldest memory of Mr. Whaley. In 2001, an opportunity arose to revitalize the old South Point building,
which had opened and closed in several forms, since “Ol' Man” Whaley's retirement. After two years and
many lessons in small town affairs, Whaley's officially opened on August 25 th 2003. Unfortunately, there
wasn't enough money for bar stools for our grand opening, since we used the last of our start-up on the
chips and beer that lined the half empty shelves. The second night, our small local following brought their
own stools; thus creating a hodgepodge of seats in all styles and colors which would start a trend that continues to define Whaley's today. Although all of the bar stools now match, most of the pictures and other
“artwork” that adorns the walls today have been donated from our friends' and family's garages or discovered on the side of the road. Even the tables and chairs we use have provided years of service at other restaurants before finally finding a home in our dining room. We would like to take this opportunity to thank
all of you who have contributed, over the years, to Whaley's eclectic, Sanford-and-Son-like style. To those of
you who have found us for the first time, I say only welcome...and it's a homemade potato chip!
