Message from - Japan Matsuri
Message from His Excellency Mr Keiichi Hayashi Ambassador of Japan I take great pleasure in warmly welcoming you to JAPAN MATSURI 2015 in this special anniversary year celebrat ing 150 years of friendship between Japan and London. This remarkable event, which has London’s Japanese community at its heart, is now in its seventh consecutive year. Each year the festival grows from strength to strength enabling Londoners and visitors alike to enjoy a wide variety of aspects of Japanese culture. That the festival continues to expand is testament to the excellent relations between Japan and the United Kingdom and the extent to which these ties are valued by so many people. 150 years ago, 19 pioneering students from Satsuma – present-day Kagoshima – in southern Japan set sail on an adventure to the United Kingdom which was to help change the course of history for modern Japan. They came to London to study, to a place which welcomed them with open arms, and on their return to Japan, they helped spearhead their country’s industrial revolution. The results of some of their endeavours have this year been inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage. In recognition of the contribution the people of Satsuma made in the creation of the nation 150 years ago, JAPAN MATSURI has invited performers from Kagoshima to London showing the wealth and breadth of culture in Japan today from the traditional to the contemporary. I believe there is something at JAPAN MATSURI for everyone: for Londoners and for visitors, for Japanese and non-Japanese alike, whether you are familiar with Japan or here to discover the richness and diversity of Japan for the first time. I am delighted to be able to share with you all that JAPAN MATSURI has to offer. Enjoy the food, the music and dance, the demonstrations of Japan’s famous martial arts and feel free to join in the family activities. On behalf of us all, I should like to express my gratitude and appreciation to Japan Matsuri Ltd. – consisting of the Japan Association in the UK, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the UK, the Japan Society and the Nippon Club – for arranging today’s event, the Greater London Authority and the City of Westminster Council and all the other organisations and individuals whose efforts have been indispensable in making today’s festival possible. Naomi Suzuki gives us the chance to take part and feel the spirit of a Japanese festival. Sing along, dance and also star in the video for IBUKI (Breath), this year’s JAPAN MATSURI song together with UK-based singer Naomi! www.naomisuzuki.co.uk Mikoshi Procession with students from Teikyo School 帝京ロンドン学園・神輿 In true Japanese festival tradition, students of the Teikyo Japanese School parade the mikoshi portable shrine topped with the phoenix around the festival site. Listen out for the cries of ‘Washoi! Washoi!’ Bon Dancing with students from Teikyo School 帝京ロンドン学園・盆踊り Bon dances are performed to welcome home the spirits of the ancestors during the summer Bon festival. Popular all over Japan, each region has its own version, Why not put on your yukata and join in with the students of the Teikyo Japanese School? Green Chorus Japanese Women’s Choir グリーンコーラス女声合唱団 Founded in 1986, London’s very own Japanese women’s choir is well established and takes great pride in performing a variety of genres including world classical music, Japanese songs both traditional and modern, and for this anniversary year, a special rendition of the Kagoshima Ohara Bushi. www.nipponclub.co.uk Satsuma Kenshi Hayato is a samurai from Kagoshima. He is strong and compassionate, a lover of Kagoshima’s beautiful landscape, traditions and food. His sword has no lethal blade and he defeats his enemies through mutual understanding and a meeting of minds. He is joined on his first trip out of Asia by Yassembo, the mischievous fox spirit, who is always looking to misbehave and find ways to trick this Satsuma hero. http://hayatoproject.com/english.html London Japanese School Choir ロンドン日本人学校合唱団 For the first time at JAPAN MATSURI 100 junior high school pupils, aged 12 to 15, from the London Japanese School in Acton come together to perform the School Song and Hana (Flower). www.thejapaneseschool.ltd.uk Izaku Taiko Odori (Izaku Drum Dancers) 伊作太鼓踊り JAPAN MATSURI is delighted to welcome the Izaku Drum Dancers from Kagoshima to London in this special year for Kagoshima-London relations. The Izaku Drum Dancers continue a tradition passed down through many generations. It is the vigorous victory dance of Hisayoshi Shimazu dating from 1406 with the dancers closely resembling warriors of the time. Each drum dancer wears a banner of bamboo and paper, 2.5 m tall, strapped to his back, is adorned with the black tail feathers of the Satsuma rooster and beats a drum fixed to his chest. Each outfit weighs nearly 20 kilos. The dance is performed each year on 28 August at Minami Kata Shrine by one of six groups. This year, it is the turn of the group from Iriki. www.pref.kagoshima.jp/ak01/chiiki/kagoshima/takarabako/traditional/izakutaiko.html SOAS Min’yo Group SOAS民謡グループ The SOAS Min’yo Group comprises Japanese folk song (min’yo) devotees who meet regularly at SOAS, University of London, to practise singing, instruments and some folk dancing. Launched in 2012 by David Hughes, a Japanese music specialist at SOAS, it welcomes members of all nationalities. This year’s performance features leading Tsugaru Shamisen player, Hibiki Ichikawa. https://soasminyo. wordpress.com; www.hibikishamisen.com Guribu ぐりぶー Eisa Dance: Children of the London Bunka Yochien エイサー踊り:ロンドン文化幼稚園 Guribu is Kagoshima’s yurukyara mascot. His name comes from the word guriin (green) and buta (pig): guribu. Kagoshima is famous for its lush vegetation and cuisine of pork from the Berkshire pig (Kagoshima kuro buta). Guribu’s eybrows are just like those of Kagoshima’s revolutionary hero, Takamori Saigo. He’s bold and a bit reckless, but kind and likes his food. He is here in the UK with one of his family, Kagobu. Be sure to join in Guribu’s dance throughout the day. http://greboo.com Firm favourites at JAPAN MATSURI, the children, aged 2 to 6 years old, (and mums) of the London Japanese Cultural Nursery School perform the Eisa dance of Okinawa, with miniature drums(!) to the music of Mirukumunari. With only two weeks to practise after the start of the new term they do fantastically well, we think. It doesn’t get any cuter than this – a true JAPAN MATSURI highlight. www.londonbunka.com Nodojiman: The J-Factor Karaoke Competition のど自慢大会 Reijiro Tsumura 津村禮次郎 Once again, members of the public test their vocal chords and attempt to impress the JAPAN MATSURI judges with their own versions of Japanese karaoke classics. There are fantastic prizes for the runners-up while the winner receives the marvellous prize of a return ticket to Japan courtesy of All Nippon Airways. Living National Treasure Noh theatre actor Reijiro Tsumura fuses the Noh tradition with contemporary dance choreographed by Yuki Watanabe and performed by Watanabe with Kazuhito Tsuruga, Moeno Ohba and Megumi Zushi. With Susumu Okajima on violin and Leon Greedy (composer) on piano, this new work – Reaching for the skies: a journey to the speed of sound – created for Japan Matsuri 2015, tells the story of the growth of the Japanese motor industry. British Suzuki Institute Violin Ensemble 英国スズキ協会 The Suzuki Method of teaching music is one of Japan’s most far-reaching cultural exports. The stage is filled with violins and students as young as 5 with Michiko Takahashi leading a repertoire which includes arrangements of Japanese tunes Soran Bushi and Momiji (Autumn Colours) especially for JAPAN MATSURI. www.britishsuzuki.org.uk Joji Hirota & London Taiko Drummers 廣田丈自&ロンドン太鼓 With the mighty thunder of huge taiko drums, Joji Hirota and the London Taiko Drummers bring us a whole host of intricate, fascinating, traditional and contemporary rhythms and soundscapes for the JAPAN MATSURI 2015 Grand Finale – unmissable. www.jojihirota.com Hiroko Tanaka Japanese Dancers 田中弘子日本舞踊 Nihon Buyo, or Japanese Dance, is a dance form refined and developed over four centuries. It contains influences of Kabuki theatre dance, Noh theatre, Japanese folk dance and a mixture of European and American cultural trends found in Japan today. The group is led by Hiroko Tanaka, a Wakayagi-ryu dance teacher with 65 years of experience. London Okinawa Sanshinkai ロンドン沖縄三線会 Martial Arts Stage Okinawan Traditional Goju-ryu Karate-do 沖縄剛柔流空手道 The London Okinawa Sanshinkai is a multinational group whose members of all ages share a love of the music and dance of the Ryukyu islands (present-day Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures). The sanshin is a plucked three-stringed instrument central to the distinct and infectious musical culture of the people of the Ryukyu islands. https://sites.google.com/site/londonsanshin Japanese karate originated in the southern islands of Okinawa and the aim of the association is the transmission of Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate-do as taught by the founder Miyagi Chojun Bushi (1888 – 1953). Under the guidance of Master Morio Higaonna 10th Dan, members feel privileged to train in Okinawa and around Europe annually. Sensei George Andrews 8th Dan IOGKF has been training for 45 years and teaches not only in this country but around the world. www.otgka.co.uk Frank Chickens フランク・チキンズ Wakaba Kendo Club 若葉剣道クラブ Once a firm favourite of legendary DJ John Peel, cult group Frank Chickens are still going strong and bring original and bizarre 80s nostalgia to the festival stage with founding member Kazuko Hohki. Remember We Are Ninja, Fujiyama Mama and Blue Canary? www.kazukohohki.com/chickens/home.html Founded in 1993, Wakaba Kendo Club is the largest children’s kendo dojo in London, with about 30 registered students aged between 5 and 18. A team of dedicated, experienced and qualified teachers nurture the ‘new shoots (wakaba) and cultivate the young students’ development. Both adults and children from the club demonstrate today. www.wakabakendo.org Hibiki Ensemble 響アンサンブル The Hibiki Ensemble was formed in 2003 by three musicians teaching Japanese music at SOAS. The group performs traditional and contemporary Japanese music known as sankyoku – music for three instruments – on koto (13- and 17-stringed long zithers), shamisen (3-stringed lute) and shakuhachi (5-holed, end-blown bamboo flute). JSD Crew: Street Dance JSD Crewストリートダンス New to JAPAN MATSURI in 2015! The members of JSD Crew all learn street dance from Shala in Japanese.
