As we gather for the 18th Annual PRISM Awards, I would like to congratulate all of the nominees and winners as well as those who submitted their work for consideration. The entertainment industry has the ability to cross cultural and social boundaries, not only to entertain but also to reduce stigma and discrimination on important health and social issues through relatable characters and powerful storylines. PRISM honorees continue to raise the bar every year with the bodies of work they submit. The commitment displayed by those of you here tonight on getting these issues right, inspires me. You are commended for all of your hard work. I am honored to serve as the Honorary Committee Chairman and to join forces with the Entertainment Industries Council once again. EIC is an organization that has always supported the efforts of our industry to tell engaging and authentic stories without stifling creativity and protecting the right to freedom of expression. EIC continues to expand its programs and resources to make sure the creative community has timely, fact-based, and anecdotal health and social information at their fingertips at any time. I am also pleased to announce that along with airing the PRISM Awards Showcase on FX for the 12th year in a row, we will also be airing it on FX Networks newest channel, FXX. We look forward to expanding the airings of the PRISM Awards Showcase in order to raise awareness of the good works that the entertainment industry is doing through accurate storytelling. I would also like to recognize my colleagues at FX and the many other PRISM Awards Showcase Airings Partners for all their support in making these issues a priority. The PRISM Awards submissions and recognition are at the heart of “the Art of Making a Difference.” After a significant effort to focus on mental health in media, our efforts are paying off as submissions that involved mental health storylines increased by 35%. This year’s submissions were evenly split between substance use and mental health issues. Nearly a quarter of the submissions explored both topics as co-occurring. Clearly, these topics make powerful, entertaining and enlightening stories as represented by all the nominees. This year, EIC launched EICNetwork.tv, our internet television network. EICNetwork.tv takes viewers on an interactive, entertaining journey through the worlds of television, film, music and comic books exploring how the world of media and the real world we experience every day intersect, reflect, and inform our views and beliefs. EICNetwork.tv features two channels, Health & Wellness and Science, Engineering, & Technology. The Network is already a respected creative resource for writers, journalists, and news rooms. It is being fully integrated into our social media related to PRISM, and our storytelling resource sites like TEAM Up, and First Draft services for producers, writers, directors, actors and development executives. It also spotlights the work of our industry to public policy makers, government agencies, and stakeholder organizations. The PRISM Awards program is one of a kind. It is the only televised awards show that addresses health and social concerns of the public interest that has aired for 15 consecutive years. We extend a special thank you to our flagship network, FX, and our additional airing partners. We applaud all submissions in their efforts to provide meaningful insight that broadens the scope of understanding for their audience. EIC is pleased to honor this year’s PRISM nominees and winners. The reach of your work is immense and appreciated. Millions of people are touched by your creative efforts. Thank you for your commitment to the “Art of Making a Difference” and please just keep doing what you are doing. You are making the world a better place! For nearly two decades the EIC has paid tribute to the accurate, honest, authentic and engaging depiction of important behavioral health issues through the PRISM Awards. Celebrating hundreds of writers, producers, and directors who rewrite stereotypes that become relatable and sympathetic characters that resonate with the audience. FX Networks has already committed to premiering the 18th Annual PRISM Showcase during Recovery Month in 2014 and also air the Showcase on our newest channel FXX.” — Rick Lane, Sr. Vice President, Government Affairs at 21st Century Fox, Inc “I actually do think the message is getting out to a much larger and much wider audience and if you don’t believe that, just take a look at the number of reforms that are going out across the country. Criminal justice reforms lead by conservative governors that are carving out money out of their budgets to say we need recovery services in our treatment facilities and in our correctional institutions, we need after care. I don’t think any of this would be happening and I don’t think it would be happening at the rate that it is, if it wasn’t for the fact that you are speaking up and that you are getting this message out.” — R. Gil Kerlikowske, Director, Office of National Drug Control Policy, Executive Office of the President “For me, recovery started with me, but it’s starting to branch out within my family and I was just a very small piece of a large puzzle of generations and generations of dysfunction and so recovery for me looks like coming from a hopeless state and moving to the light. I hate saying I am a survivor. I feel more like a “live-er.” I just want to live. I want to be able to embrace life.” — Tara Conner, 2006 Miss USA Marie Dyak, EIC, Dr. Westley Clark, SAMHSA, and Sis Wenger, NACOA 22 “If you know that someone has a drinking problem, if you know that someone is an addict and using and getting in trouble with their drinking or their drugging, I think that you have a responsibility. As the films say you can’t tell someone you are an alcoholic, you are a drug addict, but you can tell them I love you very much. And I think that we have a responsibility not to stand by and not to enable people to continue down a path which is often going to end up in jail or their death.” — Dennis Wholey, TV Talk Show Host & Producer, THIS IS AMERICA & THE WORLD “I have been sober since July 15, 2001 and I actually realized today as I was getting up that it was 4 years ago today that I had a double mastectomy. I have had breast cancer two times and both times the doctors missed it. And I just kept pushing. I remember the second time after I got the call about the breast cancer and I talked to a friend who was in recovery and she said “you know, once again Susan the stars are aligned for you” and she said “who else gets to say they saved their life two times.” And to me that’s recovery in a nutshell because it is about the perspective of looking at the same exact circumstances and facts and how you are going to look at them.” — Susan Broderick, J.D., Georgetown University “For some the journey of recovery unfolds fairly effortlessly and every step forward seems to come very naturally, but for others there are countless challenges, a few missteps and turns, and even a setback or two. So when we celebrate today, and this month, and throughout the months, let’s make sure we celebrate everyone. The providers, the families, the people in recovery, the friends, and those who are lending a helping hand to others to get well and stay well.” — Pamela S. Hyde, Administrator, Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration “For me, recovery means finally hitting rock bottom and finally realizing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, that throughout their entire lives they never realized it was there…It’s ok to talk about…I know there is someone else out there who is also going through it. So being able to speak to it, that’s my recovery.” — Erin Brady, 2013 Miss USA Skylar Jackson, Host of EICtv during live webcast of the PRISM Capitol Showcase during the Annual Planning Partners Luncheon. 23 California State Leadership Messages 24 25 Feature Film-Substance Use PRISM Nominees August: Osage County (The Weinstein Company / Jean Doumanian Productions) Director: John Wells Writer: Tracy Letts Producers: Steve Traxler, Jean Doumanian, George Clooney, Grant Heslov Junction (Grand Entertainment Group / Choice Films / Movie Ranch Entertainment / Pate Productions) Director: Tony Glazer Writer: Tony Glazer Producers: Summer Crockett Moore, Roy McDonald, Pat Patterson Lee Daniels’ The Butler (The Weinstein Company / Follow Through Productions / Salamander Pictures / Laura Ziskin Productions / Lee Daniels Entertainment / Pam Williams Productions / Windy Hill Pictures) Director: Lee Daniels Writer: Danny Strong Producers: Pamela Oas Williams, Laura Ziskin, Lee Daniels, Buddy Patrick, Cassian Elwes 28 The Spectacular Now (A24 / 21 Laps / Andrew Lauren Productions / Global Produce) Director: James Ponsoldt Writers: Scott Neustadter, Michael Weber Producers: Tom McNulty, Andrew Lauren, Michelle Krumm, Shawn Levy 29 Feature Film-Mental Health PRISM Nominees Cleaver’s Destiny (Dagger Charge Films / JennyWhine Entertainment) Director: Karl Lentini Writer: Karl Lentini Producer: Karl Lentini Home (Tribal Blues, Inc. / Mountaintop Productions / The Home Film Group LLC / Entertainment One) Director: Jono Oliver Writer: Jono Oliver Producers: Daniela Barbosa, Jono Oliver, Ged Dickersin 30 Don Jon (Relativity Media / Voltage Pictures / Ram Bergman Productions / Hit Record Films) Director: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Writer: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Producer: Ram Bergman The Story of Luke (Gravitas Ventures / Luke Entertainment LLC / Fluid Film / DViant Film) Director: Alonso Mayo Writer: Alonso Mayo Producers: Nina Leidersdorff, Julien Favre, Fred Roos Performance in a Feature Film PRISM Nominees Joseph GordonLevitt Don Jon (Relativity Media / Voltage Pictures / Ram Bergman Productions / Hit Record Films) Julia Roberts August: Osage County (The Weinstein Company / Jean Doumanian Productions) Oprah Winfrey Lee Daniels’ The Butler Meryl Streep August: Osage County (The Weinstein Company / Jean Doumanian Productions) Shailene Woodley The Spectacular Now (A24 / 21 Laps / Andrew Lauren Productions / Global Produce) 32 (The Weinstein Company / Follow Through Productions / Salamander Pictures / Laura Ziskin Productions / Lee Daniels Entertainment / Pam Williams Productions / Windy Hill Pictures) Comedy Series Episode or Multi-Episode Storyline PRISM Nominees Brody Stevens: Enjoy It!
