Genesee Community College’s
School of Nursing is ‘on the move.’
The entire facility and program has
been relocated to the second floor
of the new Dr. Bruce A. Holm
Upstate MedTech Centre located at
the Upstate Med & Tech Park on the
south side of Hawley Drive, across
the street from the main Batavia
campus. The new facilities include
classrooms, seminar space, faculty
New MedTech Building
offices, and three state-of-the-art
nursing labs. All nursing students,
faculty and alumni are invited to the public open house scheduled for Friday,
August 20, 2010. See page 5 for further details.
As the Nursing program settles into their new home this semester, we are also
welcoming all of our alums to come ‘home’ for the first-ever Genesee Community
College Homecoming! Scheduled for October 1 and 2, the weekend will be filled with
sporting events, alumni activities and lots of fun! It’s time to come back to campus and
share memories, meet with old classmates and see how far the College has come since its
beginnings in 1967.
I look forward to seeing all of our incredible alumni at Homecoming 2010!

Graduate Survey
Genesee Community College’s Office
of Institutional Research conducts an
important follow-up survey with all
graduates approximately six months
after they complete their studies. By
tracking what our graduates are doing
– whether it is furthering educational
interests, working part-time or fulltime, tending to other responsibilities
such as family, traveling, marriage,
or pursuing a hobby – the compiled
information helps dictate future
academic program developments and
other significant investments. We ask
that all recent graduates complete the
survey in a timely fashion. It is available
online or through regular mail. If
you or someone you know recently
graduated from GCC, please do not
delay in completing and returning
the Graduate Follow-up Survey. For
further information, please contact Joel
Bruce at 585-343-0055 ext. 6437 or
email:[email protected]. You can

Name: Frank Collins “Jimi Jamm” ’89
Current Occupation: National Top 40/Hot AC Promotion, Howard Rosen
Promotion.
Fondest memory of GCC: Being on the air and expressing myself through my air
shifts and the music I played.
How did GCC prepare you for your current career: Through the practical
application of being on the air and the hands-on time with the radio and TV
equipment. It afforded me an internship with 98PXY Rochester, which led to my first
paying job.
Favorite GCC class or experience? Any class with Chuck Platt teaching. He was the rare breed of teacher being able to learn from him and really liking him. He absolutely made it fun.
Favorite professor: Chuck!!
Favorite pass time or hobby: Singing karaoke

Name: Matt Locker ’88
Current Occupation: Voice-Over Artist
Fondest memory of GCC: Without a doubt, Chuck Platt stands out as the professor
who brings the fondest memories.
How did GCC prepare you for your current career? We had a leg-up on
graduates from other schools because we were already familiar with the music and
formatics we’d encounter in commercial radio, thanks to Chuck Platt’s ‘serious rock’
format and he afforded us a station that prepared us for a smooth transition to the
work force.
Favorite GCC class or experience: Any class with Chuck Platt!
Favorite professor: Chuck Platt
Name: Kelli Sperino Pease ’89
Current Occupation: Internet Advertising Consultant at the Genesee Valley Penny
Saver and an on air announcer at WCJW radio station in Warsaw, NY
Fondest memories of GCC: Receiving the Lions Club Communications Award,
attending the IBS convention in New York City (and the car ride down with Marc St.
John at the wheel), the fire at RockFest (’87 I believe), being the love interest for Frank
Collins (Jimi Jamm) in a music video, doing a morning show with Russ and the Love
Lines/After Hours love song show with Eileen, and keeping the station on the air
during a blizzard with Marc St. John.
Favorite professor: I loved being a big part of the radio station, and Chuck Platt
will go down in history as my all time favorite college professor. 3

‘Met My Mate’ at Genesee
Over 90 employees of the
College know the value
of a Genesee Community
College degree. They know
because they have earned
their degrees from GCC
and have returned ‘home’ to
make careers at their alma
mater. Their backgrounds
are diverse but their
commitment to the College
is very much the same
they know they built their
foundations at GCC and are
helping current students do
the same.
John Michalak ’73 and Patti (Mancuso) Michalak ’70
“You will meet and marry someone right here from GCC.” Those were some of
the first words Mac Wormley said to me. I did not agree, of course…however,
he was RIGHT! John and I met while attending a class together. It was the
fall of 1969. I swear “love at first sight” does exist. I saw those blue eyes of his
and I was hooked. We had a short courtship of six months and we were
engaged. We married in October of 1970. It will be 40 years the weekend
of the first-ever Homecoming at GCC – how appropriate!
First row left to right: Lisa Papke, Maureen (Holland) Goodsell, Rose Marie Monachino, Marilyn (Cecero) Dickinson, Jeanne (Wassink) Cianfrini, Eunice
Bellinger, Mary Jo (Perry) Dumuhosky, Corrinne Maile, Cindy (Stone) Francis Second row: Deborah (Radley) Klotzbach, Lori (Cassatt) Anderson, Dolores Wilkin,
Michelle Burkhardt, Lauren (Dickinson) Cummings, Liz Wimbush, Patty (Longhany) Hume, Patti (Sheehan) Furness, Maureen Leupold, Angela Albano,
Amy Cleveland, Kevin Pawlicki, Third row: Elizabeth (Burton) Downie, Paulette Mansfield-Brown, Becky (Almeter) Patterson, Bob Reynolds, Tom Klotzbach,
Judith Littlejohn, Kathy (McCarthy) Yacuzzo, Nina (Irrera) Mortellaro, Pat Lafarnara, Cougar (Christina Bakos)
Maureen Leupold ’79
Maureen Leupold came to Genesee Community College in 1977 as a self-proclaimed
“directionless high school student.” It was during her time at Genesee that she discovered
her aptitude and love for science. She developed a passion for Biology and put that
passion to good use when she interned for four summers with the Genesee County Soil
and Water Conservation District. Her internship included hand-mapping wetland plants
to be submitted to the state for approval. Fast forward 30 years to 2007: Maureen is a
full time instructor of Biology at GCC and one of her students is now mapping those
same wetlands for his internship. Environmental Studies student, Jared Skye ’08, took
Jared Skye and Maureen Leupold
Maureen’s research and information from the 1970’s and compiled it with his findings
from present day into digital form. “It was the support from my professors who really inspired me,”
Maureen said. “I want to give my students real opportunities and give back to them what was given to me when I was a student.”

encouraging, supporting, advising and motivating. If you would like to consider being a mentor to a student, go to the Alumni site,
News and Events, Career Mentor and complete the application. The introductory mentoring session begins in Fall Semester 2010
and ends with a final dinner in April 2011. For more information call (585) 343-0055 ext. 6265 or email [email protected].

A True Homecoming - Alumni Working at GCC
John retired seven years ago after spending 32 years in law enforcement. I, on the other
hand, have had many jobs: teaching Special Ed., owning two businesses, selling radio time,
kitchen and bath designer, back to retail and now back to the radio again! I have a great
resume!
We have three grown children, Timothy, Tamara, and John. Tim married Sarah Lovria and
they have given us two wonderful and special grandkids. Aaron is 10 years old, and Eli is 4.
We are very lucky to have all our children living in Batavia. Our life has been wonderful with
ups and downs like anyone else, but we still love each other and continue to focus on a great
future together. Thank you GCC for bringing us together 40 years ago!
Darren Edwards ’04 and Kate (Starkweather) Edwards ’04
In most long distance relationships, if the relationship is still new, there is a chance that the
distance will cause it to fall apart. We luckily did not have that happen, because of the time
that we spent together at Genesee Community College.
We met the summer before we started at GCC, at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia. Darren was
the only younger guy in the food stand at the time, when he asked me if I’d like to hang out
one evening. By the third date, I’d already met his whole entire family. We spent the whole
summer together, and that fall we were both enrolled at GCC, Darren a Communication
major, and I a Digital Arts major.
Over the next two years we spent all of our time together, whether that be hanging out
in the radio station for his radio show on Monday nights; or on the stage in the main
hall between classes. It was because of this time spent together that our relationship
continued to grow!
The summer we graduated from Genesee Community College, we moved in together.
I started at SUNY Brockport, and Darren started working for Wyoming County Bank
(now Five Star Bank). Darren is still with Five Star Bank, and I joined him there in 2006.
Darren is now a regional operations manager; and I am an assistant branch manager for
the Attica Branch. In 2008, on July 12th, we were married at Terry Hills in Batavia.
We have since bought a home, and live in the area.
Because what we learned about ourselves and each other at Genesee Community
College, we are where we are today, and are still going strong after eight years! If we
had gone to separate colleges, we have no idea where the relationship would have gone,
but because we were able to grow with each other and learn from one another, we are still going strong
and are still very much in love! 9
